From my Rose of Sharon's...... I let the seeds drop right under the tree and let them grow about 2-3 inches, then I transplant them to a pot, let them grow about 6 inches, then transplant them. The seeds grow right through my landscaping fabric and mulch. I give most away. Yes I'm a SHARER! I LOVE GIVING! I love your tutorials. Thank You so much!
I did the same thing with oak trees, and have 5 little trees, now 18 months in the pot and looking good. Funny, I started them out mostly in the shade thinking this would more closely mimic their situation in wild, but later moved 2 into a sunnier patch. These two have shot up over our Southern hemisphere summer and are almost twice as big as the others.
There are so many timelapses of plants on youtube, but I have not seen a single one about birches! Your video is the closest one to a timelapse so far. Looks like my silver birch seedling is going to have some screen time on youtube... btw your birch seedlings look gorgeous!
@@GrowWithKit Hello again! My silver birch is still alive and has adapted to growing outside! Does it need some protection from winter when grown in a pot? Where I live it gets down to -5 Celsius and rarely down to -10 Celsius. I am able to put it under a balcony and I have observed some goat willow seedlings that have survived a winter down there. Also thanks for the good luck, it had some close calls!
Your videos are so much fun to watch!! I loved this one! I aspire to have some interesting content on my channel too, it's great I've got people like you to get inspiration from! Have a nice & productive week ahead!! 🥰
Hello,, what type of sand is suitable for mixing with compost & what is the ratio you use please,, video has answered lots of my questions thank you for making it
Hey buddy thank you for the video, I have some birch trees which I've been growing from seed (unsure which species). Some are starting to drop leaves and I have no idea why! I am keeping them outside on a bench in full sun (though it hasn't been that hot lately)and watering whenever I notice the soil drying up (I'd say once a week on average). I have some which I've kept inside also and they're thriving! I was wondering if you have any idea what I may be doing wrong and could offer some advice. Cheers mate!
Hi, thanks and sorry for the late reply, I hope your trees are still going. I can’t really say what the problem could be but I’ve had some randomly drop all their leaves, bud up and sprout a fresh set. The weather & temperature confuses them sometimes I think, I’ve found they very rarely actually die. Hope that’s helpful, thanks for watching mate
@@GrowWithKit so funnily enough I found out the ones I was having trouble with were actually black alder trees rather than birch trees! The birches are doing very well; the black alder ones are a struggle i think just because they obviously usually grow next to rivers/ swaps and are used to loads and loads of water which I hadn't been giving them. Now I'm giving them a lot of water they seem to be doing better
Great video! This is almost how I did with Erman's Birch (Betula ermanii) years ago. Initially I kept the seed in moist paper, and then about a week later I carefully separated the germinating seed when germination began.- The plants survived even in dry conditions indoors a month and a half or so, growing mostly roots. Then in May when planted outside in larger pots, the plants immediately began vigorous growth. In August when the first growing season was ending, the plants had reached about 0.5 m. I had also a few dwarf birches (Betula nana), it worked the same way with them (growth was a bit slower). @UC1oNGm0GO9rKRHVFiGbIZmA
Hey, i want to try this, but it seems i am a bit late considering its spring. However there is many fresh birch seeds here. Is it possible to grow them from fresh seeds? Maybe if i cold stratify them first?
Hi, no I didn’t do anything, I harvested them and sowed them straight away. I’ve found Birch will germinate just fine fresh from the tree in autumn. Thanks for watching and commenting.
They’ll most likely be perfectly fine, I’m still germinating batches from last years seeds, I do store them in the fridge when I’m not using them though. A bright area but not too sunny or you’ll cook them under the plastic, you can also sow them direct without covering them as long as you keep them well watered.
hi, do u have email? I wanna send you a pic of tree then you can tell me If I flollow the sams way as you do .. the tree I wanna show you is like that you share with us with a little difference ..
Hi, it’s basically the same process for most trees but some seeds require a cold period to germinate. You shouldn’t share your email on here, a lot of people can read these comments. All the best 🌱🌱kit🌱🌱
They need lots of light, place them directly under the sun. Water when the surface soil is dry, when you keep them in a pot. Don't fertilize at all when they are young, they will die. Fertilize only when absolutely necessary... I'm talking about my experience. In winter you usually don't need protection I think, but you can perhaps do something like putting them under a balcony or wrapping the pot. Birches are extremely cold hardy though.

Hi Kat, they can get to over a metre in the first year.

Any sand, just give it a good rinse because it may have salt in it. I used sharp sand.
Can you do this with Silver Birch, smashing video thank you
Hi, yes I’ve grown silver birch & red Birch from seed this way. As far as I’m aware it’s the same for all birch.
@@GrowWithKit
Ok thank you so much for coming back to me , cheers Phil
Is it possible to get the birch seeds in summer, or do I need to wait for autumn? Loved your video by the way, I always wanted to grow trees. ^^
Thank you. The seeds won’t be ready until around September/October onwards. You can plant them in spring to autumn.
Do they sprout in the first week or second week? How many centimeters is the sprout in the second week?
It depends on the seed but normally they germinate in about a week and they’ll grow fast, maybe a few centimetres a week.
Thank you👏👏👏
No problem thank you for watching and commenting

Hi there, love the video! Just wanted to ask if you stratified your seeds or did you plant them straight away?
Hi Dean, thank you. I planted them a few days after I collected them. I do store them in the fridge but they don’t need cold stratification.
@@GrowWithKit thanks 🙏🏻😁
Did you have to put them through a dormant period?
Hi, no I didn’t, birch seeds are viable straight after harvest, no cold period required.
Thanks for watching and commenting
@@GrowWithKit does that go with all birch I’m planning on growing a few and was wondering
As far as I’m aware yes, I’ve tried Downy, silver & Chinese red, all viable straight away.

Hi, i have found that fresh seed will still germinate just fine, I would definitely give it go now with some seeds and store the rest in the fridge.
@@GrowWithKit Ok, will do. Thank you very much for the help 👍

Do you dry the seeds before you plant them
They’ll be dry already when they are ripe from the tree.
👍👍👍

Not yet but they are doing really well, I’ll try get an update video on soon.

Good day. Do you sell seeds?
Hi, no I don’t sorry.
@@GrowWithKit do you know where I can get them
Birch trees are everywhere here in the UK, depending on where you live you can collect them or you may be able to order some online.
This was great, thanks , what month did you show the seed ? Did you soak seeds and then stratify seed In cooler for a period first ??

No strat needed ?
Not in my experience, I’ve found they germinate just fine freshly harvested from the tree in autumn.

Im wondering if you can take the seeds straight off the tree and plant them. 🪴 without having to winterize them ?
Yes, it should work.
With Birch I think you can but if your planting them outside or in a greenhouse, they won’t grow until it warms up anyway.
