    reduce weight,
    increase rigidity per pound
    increase surface area to fight overheating

      But most importantly, reduce mass that absorbs, stores and dissipates heat. I can't help but feel fluting is a fad.

    The fluting on that rifle does not preserve as much rigidity as when you don't create disconnected blocks. Linear flutes are stiffer than spiral flutes. Double spiral flutes in opposite directions is like cutting the roof off a car with a monocoque vehicle body. It goes limp. Then you might as well remove the islands to lighten it.
    It is telling that your first reason for fluting is "it looks cool". Not to engineers: It looks stupid, because it violates the primary purpose: To shed significant weight, while retaining most of the rigidity of the heavy barrel.
    Covering the barrel with heavy dimples is an alternative to straight fluting, that is stiff in every direction and does not make the bore lobed. That is providing the "bridges" between dimples are as wide as the dimples.

    cool looking rifle, I'd love to see if there is a cooling benefit to the barrel especial in a straight flute design.

    to my knowledge one easily proven thing is that barrel fluting makes the gun a bit less heavy, not by much, but still.

    with a strait flute does the alignment of the flutes change the direction of harmonics?

    Does it make a difference heating up if I was to do mag dumps with a bolt action or pump action rifle?

  • @manueladolfoholzmannillane3050

    ok, but if i have two barrels, both have the same weight, but one is flutted, The myth says that the flutted one it is going to be stiffer and have better heat dissipation. True or false?

    • @Horizon_Outdoors
      @Horizon_Outdoors  Рік тому +1

      No not exactly. The Fluted one would have more surface area so yes better heat dissipation. In terms of Stiffness, it would be stiffer than one of comparable weight that was smaller in diameter but not nessasaraly of the same native barrel of the same diameter. But depending on how its fluted the difference is almost negligible

    What kind of machine tool do you use to do the fluting ? I'm thinking, Carbide Ball Mill.

    • @pbgd3
      @pbgd3 3 роки тому

      My guess would be horizonal mill cutter on a jig - this is how lots of spiral/gearing applications are cut because end mills have a climb and a conventional cut so you are forced to do multiple passes to clean up and get full depth. With a milling cutter in a horizontal using a jig to rotate along with advancing and fixturing the barrel at whatever angle is required you can do each path increasing depth or a full depth pass slowly.
      Google gear hobbing to see how this is set up

    May look pretty. But study barrel whip and harmonics. YOU may not see the difference. Much like someone shooting a 1/4 moa rifle and getting 2" groups with it won't see the difference when the stock is bedded. But there's just no way that's not affecting the Max accuracy of that gun negatively. Pro extreme ranges shooters are always looking for an edge. If this had even the slightest, they'd all be using it. There's a reason they all use heavy cylindrical bull barrels. Cute theories though. Definitely a cool looking gun.

    Removing material from a bolt or barrel , weakness the sample. The flutes cool at different rates causing the barrel to move.. causing inaccuracies.. if 9 oz causes you pain??? Go to the gym!!

    • @hawiehawhaw
      @hawiehawhaw 5 років тому

      why would you think the barrel would move when there is an even fluting pattern all the way around?

      Chris Indermuehle
      He may be guessing, but he's correct from an engineering standpoint that's not only proven, but is also common sense. Secondly, you'd have to flute perfectly to not introduce some twist issue and that's not going to happen. Fluting looks cool and it can lighten a bull barrel down to an in-between over a pencil hunting barrel. Fluting does cool a barrel faster when comparing to barrels of equal weight. Fluting might make sense for multiple shots in rapid succession over a set timeframe, but I can't visualize this scenario. My piston weapons are clearly effected by heat on multiple shots in quick succession, as are my lever actions with tube magazines affixed to a thin barrel, both causing differential heat issues.

      @@hawiehawhaw Because the crystalline structures in the steel are not uniform, and the cuts made to the barrel WILL be less precise than the cut a lathe can make.

      I agree with you Bob, this video was just a list of excuses to flute. For a precision rifle, I want more weight. For cooling, don’t rapid fire your precision rifle.
