Muzzle breaks are a godsend for aging hunters (65+). I gladly added one to my 30-06 and now I can hunt for a few more years. Of course, I wear adequate ear protection and use a shooting stick rest.
Amen brother!
I just recently hit 60 and I ordered one for my 308 just for that reason. After a few boxes the shoulder gets sore the next day. Never used to have that trouble.
@@scubasteve3032 is this the same Scuba Steve who used to make bullet performance videos? They were pretty good. 👍
Yup,.. I'm adding, a PVA ShockWave or Jet Blast 3, to my LR Hunting Rifle as, they have, way LESS, "Concussion" at,. the Shooter !
Also extra weight at the end of the barrel increases accuracy by reducing the amplitude of the harmonic swing. This is true for both muzzle brakes and suppressors. More so for suppressors since they are heavier. A lot of muzzle brakes can get you 50 to 60 percent recoil reduction. Unfortunately it looks like the small round hole design that Horizon uses will not be maximally efficient. One can get even more recoil reduction from muzzle brakes that direct gas slightly backwards. But the advantage in recoil reduction that they give is more than offset by the disadvantage of extra noise that hits the shooter.
Great video! I just watched a video right before this one where they had a rifle(I think it was a Savage) that was 6.5 creedmore on a rack that measures the amount recoil. He used a few different breaks and did a measurement without a break. The breaks kept it around a 7-8.5 and without the break it registered 18.5.
If you are going to practice and develop loads on hard kicking magnums a muzzle brake is essential to overcome the flinch and the shoulder pain. I have them on all my magnums. I also put them on my ARs for fast follow up shots.
Just got my savage 300wm non indicated braked. Amazing the recoil reduction.
I’m going to do same with my savage 110 in .300 WM?
Put a VG6 on my Rem 700 PCR a few months ago. Watching that 6.5 CM zip down range is pretty cool.
Is all about the rifle it self,,, all Barrels like different ammo even when manufactured in the same machine and are the same brand and model!!!
Same principle applies to these devices ...
Good video
use a Carlsons screw in brake on my RIA VR60 . Really helps. Nice review. ThankYou
This was a very informative video, iam thinking about putting a muzzle brake on my Weatheby Vanguard 7MM Remington Magnum.
That's a cartridge which will shove you around in a light rifle, for sure.
I compare my 7mmRM to a large turkey load, not "fun" to shoot, it's a tool.
Reduces recoil in my 300 WBY MAG. Also have one in my 6mm.
Can't beat the Little Bastard Gen II for 30 cal rifles.
Tank-style brakes or designs similar can create surfaces of reflection that send acoustic shock waves back into the shooter's face (even if jetting gasses are not), enough hammering and enough shots taken and you'll start feeling like you were slapped in the face adding to fatigue. So be careful about the chosen design.
Just got one for my 10/22. I'll try with & wirhout, see the difference of it and see which is better.
Thank you for your informative video. Question does a muzzle break reduce bullet impact force?
No.
I don’t like muzzle breaks.
I’m looking to keep my fellow shooters hair in check.
Only need a muzzle brake for magnum rounds only. On everything else I have
A2 flash hider on 30-06- 308- and 223-
is not allowed in my state for deer 🦌 hunting season.
maybe an informative video on "muzzle brakes" "compensators" & "flash hiders"
No one wants to set up near you if you are shooting with a muzzle brake at the range. It simply kicks up too much debris, makes for a louder experience for those along side you and throws some gas in their direction. Watching a slow motion video as a bullet exits the muzzle, you can see considerable gas exiting the muzzle before the bullet. That's normal; it happens in all guns. In a tight brake, like the one in this video, those gasses cause considerable high pressure turbulence in the brake, so I can see how some brakes may degrade accuracy. I suggest you check for bullet wobble if your accuracy has been degraded. Wobble is easily determined by shooting a heavy white (not tan or cream color) paper target at a couple of different distances. Retrieve the target, press the frayed edges back into the holes and carefully examine the graphite "stain". The tiny black marks should be the same size throughout the entire bullet hole circumference, not more on two opposite sides of the hole. Shoot, again, without the brake and check for wobble again, because worn rifling or a poorly machined exit port can cause wobble, as well. Wobble can also be caused by the wrong ammunition being used in your gun (too rapid of a twist in a high power rifle), such as a 1 in 8 twist or faster. The particular lead composition inside the copper jacket may actually be melting as a rapid twist adds energy to the bullet. A hot bullet actually expands slightly and reduces in size as it "cools" ever so slightly while travelling down range. I enjoyed your video; thanks for posting it.
I have read mixed reviews on many brakes, several commented about groups being affected both pro and con. I assume that's based on each gun, brake and round? Turbulence created behind the round exiting the crown I would assume is the reason? I plan to test my Savage .308 M10 with out soon, since its not grouping well with the factory brake.
Lol what kind of snowflake need muzzle brake on a 308 u should stick to airsoft
@@kristijanmedved6066
Depends. .308 for heavy metal division 3-gun competitions? Yeah, you probably want the muzzle break on it.
So the brake only helps if you have to shoot follow up shots as fast as you can. I keep hearing some talk about brake helps tighten the group? I don't think it make much sense in that case if you are in no rush. Like I don't think there is any real logic regarding increasing accuracy per well aimed shot right with or without a brake... can anyone confirm this?
It tightens shot group because it reduces felt recoil, which in turn reduces your chances of flinching or anticipating the recoil, which will tighten your shot group.

the main point of using a MB is to mitigate recoil and protect your rifle scope.
Yes it makes a world of difference. You tighten up your groups, and reduce recoil of the rifle. The tighter your groups are, the more accurate you will be at longer ranges say plus 300 yards. The downfall is the noise is usually very loud and should not be shot without hearing protection.
Normally, its just reduces recoil, and won’t increase the mechanical accuracy. There are a few muzzle breaks out there, like Brownings BOSS, that tune the barrel’s harmonics to the load you are shooting. This does make the rifle more accurate, in addition to reducing recoil.
I completely separated my shoulder when I was a junior in HS. Unfortunately, even 30-06 is too much for me, causing a very sharp pain with each shot. I had a muzzle brake put on my 30-06, and can shoot to my heart’s content. It feels very similar to my 12 ga with bird shot now.
Do I need a crush when installing a muzzle break on a 308 Remington?
I want one
Checking this out because I just got a CMMG 200 series Banshee. It came with a muzzle brake. I don't really want one since I am running 9mm which doesn't recoil much and I heard the concussion and noise can be disrupting. But since it is on, I am looking into the potential benefits to see if I should just keep it on. I plan on using it for practice, casual range fun, and it will be my primary home defense firearm. Is the boise and concussion not as big of a deal with 9mm or should I get a flash hider/flash comp?
Karthrine is really eyeing him up

Why can’t women leave their eyebrows alone?
well I have a bicep torn tendon there 3 in a bicep 2 are main & one makes it pop up it not right but there ways arm used i try to get a bag to carry stuff I had to get out of car to get it!
I suffered a stroke trying to read your post
300 win mag plus it would be a great idea to have one
what action is on this gun here? what stock is that too? Is it a HS precision stock?
I’m in the market for a brake for my savage 110 ultralight in .308
Adding a muzzle brake to my 300 mag rifle, will I have to resight in my rifle a 100 yards again.or will it still remain that way, because I have one ordered for my t/c dimension 300 mag and my vortex scope on it is already sighted in at 100 yards!?
@ I have it sighted in at 100 yards,so it looks like I'll find out sometime next week if my new muzzle brake makes my off at 100 yards now ok thanks for the info!!!!!
Does a muzzle brake reduce fps also ?
Just got my savage 110 high country in 300wsm . It has what looks like a decent muzzle brake and I’m wondering what the felt recoil would compare to.
I just got a savage 110 high country in 300 win mag. Between the included muzzle brake and the weight of the rifle (it’s a fairly heavy gun). To me it feels like my 270.
What muzzle break was on that rifle?
Do you all make each muzzle brake customs for each barrel. Like I have a howa 1500 bull barrel and would like a brake would you all make one just for that gun and what would be a price on that ?
As long as the barrel isn't shorter than 23" we can definitely help with that!
Horizon Firearms my barrel is a 20” just wondering why you need it to be 23” or longer ?
David Keats. Did you ever receive a answer to your question?
There is no place on your website to browse muzzle brakes
Just so you know muzzle breaks let you shoot sideways when your getting flanked.
And they also let you shoot around corners
I have a 270 Remington 700 stainless if I was wanting to put a muzzle brake on there could I send this to y'all and have it done what would be involved in doing that thanks enjoy your video
Lj Gaines it’s not that hard to install a muzzle brake, you just thread it on your barrel.
@@dalonfrench789 Mazda 2016 SS with a fluted barrel and it doesn't have threads on the end with a thread protector going to have to be threaded thanks for getting back with me though
Yep sure works on 300 win mag
Question: I read one comment regarding a brake that the brake reduced the accuracy. Removing the brake restored the accuracy. Is loss of accuracy a likely problem? It doesn't seem likely if the brake was correctly manufactured, but I suppose the vents could add turbulence as the bullet enters and leaves the brake area.
Also, a channel called Jeremy S. has a couple of vids testing the recoil reduction of various brakes for 5.56 and for .308. Very well done. With the rifle on a sled, he measured the distance the rifle traveled on recoil for each brand of brake.
It will change the poi, but not accuracy.
Unless whomever installed it really messed up.
My .308 actually got a touch more accurate due to the softer recoil. Poi shift was about 6" at 200yd zero vs no brake
Depends on the level of accuracy. The muzzle device will change barrel harmonics and that ca make groups bigger or smaller. Use washers to retime and find the sweet spot. Another issue could be baffle strikes. Some cheep ones have that issue.
What is the gun you have there?
That's one of our Horizon custom rifles. - honestly it's been so long since this video first came out, I don't remember what caliber it is but thanks for your comment! -Kat
I shoot a custom er shaw .308 hunting rifle and having alot of issues with it rising and jumping around while using a bipod. Any suggestions? Should I have a muzzlebrake added? Thanks
I just read that this will help it not jump up.
You can watch the bullet hit the target? I've only seen that on 1 occasion and I was shooting 22lr.
I think they were referencing long range shooters, I can't imagine you are putting the 22lr much past 100yds
@@NorCalSaint I shot my 22lr once @ 200 yds and the sun hit it just right and I could see it almost all the way.
The arc was at least 15 feet lol !
Hey Muzzle Brake for Remington 770 Model Caliber 270???
I use a VG6-65. It is designed for a 6.5 Creedmoor or a 260. But the hole is large enough for a 270. You could also use a 30 caliber muzzle brake and you will still get most of the recoil reduction.
I thought it was called 'indexed'
Also sometimes referred to as, “timed” as in the threads are timed to produce snug at 12 O’Clock.
Do they make it in to 243
Does muzzle brake change the muzzle velocity? ?
Not that we have seen. It changes the harmonics and thus changes the point of impact, but not velocity.
Ml
If it did it would be a extremely small amount, the projectile is ahead of the escaping gasses. So for the sake of saying there was gasses ahead of the projectile, yes it would. There would condensed gasses in its path changing direction of flow, this would create inconsistency and would cause all kinds of problems with accuracy.

What sights do you have on that?

The girl kinda looks like Matt’s wife from Demolition Ranch.
Looks like older Mare from DemoRanch
No muzzle brake fucket I even cut the barrel a couple of inches, if you don't feel the recoil are you even shooting 😂😂
not so fun fact, muzzle brakes are less loud if you are in front of them. Found out the scary way, wear your orange vest when hunting!
40%? What kind of cheap ass junk brakes are you using? I won't even consider a brake that has less than 70% reduction in felt recoil.
40% is about right.
@@pudendajohnson1932 My Precision Armament M472 reduces recoil at the 70% level on my .223 Wylde A.R. About 55% on my .300 Blackout shooting supersonic ammo.
Muzzlebreak does not make the shot louder. Its the same amount of sound its just directed in a diff direction.
Anybody that uses a muzzle brake has NO respect for the shooters around them. PERIOD

It’s driving me absolutely insane trying to find a new hunting rifle that doesn’t have a muzzle brake or threaded barrel. Only reason I came to this video was because I’d almost given up trying and started thinking “maybe it’s not as bad as I think it is.” So thanks for making me feel like I’m not the last hunter out there that wants a normal barrel
Please let the pretty girl speak more next time
I hate muzzle brakes. They are loud as all hell. If I, as a scrawny young 12 year old growing up in the midwest could shoot deer with 3 inch 12 gauge slugs, a grown man should certainly be able to shoot his little 300 Winchester mangum without a damn muzzle brake.
shoot a 300wsm with a 22" barrel than say that again. After shooting a box at the range i can barely lift my arm the next day
@@mickyjones336322" 300 WSM doesn't have nearly as much recoil as a 12 gauge shooting 3 inch slugs out of an 18 inch barrel.
@@BloodiedYetUnbowed AHAHA ive shot plenty of slugs through various shotguns and you cant compare the two. When i was growing up all we had were single shot 10 gauges in my area and that wasnt as bad as my 5lb 300wsm
Has anyone heard of hearing loss with a brake?
I was standing beside a 270 being sighted in for about 12 shots. I had ear plugs in, the way I have put them in for years and had profound immediate permanent hearing loss of about 30-40% in one ear. Be careful when using them!
