You guys are completely right. I just vented mine to the outside rather than the roof space. I needed to remove old oil soaked insulation. This area also attracted mice and rats where there is evidence of rats trying to eat insulation and roof rafters soaked in oil. If you want a cheap fix for rat infestations and damage to insulation vent your range hood directly outside.
A grease filter on the range hood should prevent that. Did the one you replaced have one? If it did then they don’t work and it’s a reason to get you to pay more.
I bought a house 9 months ago. All the cabinets are sticky and greasy. I just removed my exhaust fan and now I know why. It only recirculated the exhaust. The house is 28 years old and grease is all in the duct work.
what kind of worker should i hire to install a vented hood? i need the hood to be vented through a double glazed window in kitchen. so i think I'll need some kind of glass worker. but i don't know what qualification worker i should look for?
My range hood isn't even venting into the roof space! It just vents out the top of the kitchen cabinets towards the ceiling! And this is a new house that was only built in 2017. Interestingly, there is a small hole in the back of the vent space through to the wall cavity. The range hood is an AEG DL8560-M, which has an oil filter metal grill and a charcoal filter - is venting toward the ceiling sufficient for this type of range hood?
My friend had his kitchen remodeled and it was discovered that from the original builder the exhaust was run right into the wall cavity and left open there. I guess it's a common practice, maybe the builder doesn't follow up with HVAC companies to pick up where the installers left off.
I haven't got to the stage of selecting a suitable rangehood for our house rebuild... but after watching this video it's made me wonder whether there are any rear exhaust air exit rangehood systems? The stove top is *generally* located up against an outside wall, and hence there's an opportunity to make the penetration through the wall for the rangehood exhaust air, rather than go through the ceiling and roof. Any feedback on that thinking?
with today's technology world, the noise from most extraction hoods is insanely loud. I am now swapping over to a external mounted motor, but most people are not aware of how to effectively match an exhaust system to their house. Roof pitch, length of extraction pipe all counts
I am trying to tighten up my house also. Getting UPVC windows with 0 air infiltration hopefully. So which product is suitable for this situation ? Any of them ? I was considering inline extraction to reduce noise further. I have one going out the wall and makes a mess of the eaves. The vent is badly sealed and bringing air back inside even if its ducted. Is a roof exhaust with flashing best and do I need a roofer to do that ?
Hi, thank you for your video. I was trying to find a video on a stenchy/stale smell coming from both the gas fireplace as well as vent above the stove. I am in apartment, and I called maintenance. I have not heard back from them, and it's been over a week 🙄 I have never used the gas fireplace. I moved into this apartment 3-4 months ago these are not brand new apartments maybe 2007? I also do not have pets and do not use any toxic, lab-made scented products of any kind. I covered gas fire with reflectix to try and stop stency smell from blowing in as much as possible 🤢 I am wondering if you have any ideas or anyone I could ask about this? I'm in Washington state thank you so much for your help and time. Diane
If you have a gas stovetop and gas fireplace and the smell is the same be careful could be gas leak/ aka fire. Different smell past tenants never cleaned range fan screens - renters don’t care much like homeowners. You could buy a cheap gas leak detector, or there should be carbon monoxide detector maybe dead battery?
This is a pet hate of mine as we have recirc type kitchen fan. Very hard to get plumber to retro, they just are not interested. Any links to suitable sites for components appreciated. I’m off to watch again. Thanks.
Do you have any insight on how the ductwork installlation can affect grease trapping and CFM efficiency? I see installations where the M to F are installed in AND against the direction of airflow. Some argue that grease slides down into the crimped edge, others argue that it gets trapped when pulled up through...I'm having a hard time finding literature on it.
How would I go with a flat roof house built along passivehaus principles ie sealable building HRV unit ? Would I be best just having extraction over the cooker into the liveable air space (I haven't cooked chips or deep fried for about 20 years now!) ...
Sonia Woolley recirculation rangehood. you need to change the charcoal filter though. 👍🏻. there should be an exhaust outlet in your kitchen going back to the HRV/ERV.
Our electric kitchen stovetop is in front of windows and we don't have the option to put it against a wall in order to utilise a normal rangehood. What are the recommendations for this scenario?
1:03 WHAT are you saying??? “Drop Stopper”? “Dry Stopper”? I turned CC on and googled both terms but found nothing. Sorry, but I cannot quite make out what you are saying.
If it vents into the roof through a grease filter there shouldn’t be any grease getting into the attic. If it does the filters are garbage and don’t do what they’re supposed to be doing making them redundant. If it makes grease stains on the ceiling your house is 200 years old or someone is dumping it up there.

@@paulredinger5830 so its ok to send to attic if I have a good grease filter? (Don't have experience making hole in roof top)

1:05 WHAT THE HELL??!? I actually shouted when you said that. Who allows that?!? That's insane! If you find that you should sue the builder!

it is very common sadly. Mine too is done this way.
Excellent information. Leant alot here. Thank you
Thanks guys for the info.
But do you stop, the grease dropping from the exhaust motor fan because, I've had enough of cleaning it every 3rd day.
our range hood has a drip trough for this grease
That’s exactly the problem I am facing in my brand new home

Here in America we call them "forehead greasers" or joke that they're no better than recirculating toilets 🤣

Australian vent hoods duct into the attic? That's pretty weird, I've never seen this here in the USA.
Thank god for that. We are lucky we have very temperate weather down here.
Thank you for the tips

In attick pipe then Roof vend or in attic and out sofit.
open the window and get one of those fans that you can direct and blow it through the window.
