Next step is the old insert has to be removed. Make sure the valves are closed before using any type of tooling in the hole. Otherwise the valves could possibly be bent because the valves are just below the spark plug hole. After the valves are closed, I'd try an extractor of some type. Be very careful NOT to force any type of extractor you use because if it breaks it would be very difficult to remove due to the tool metal being very hard. Extractors are made of a very hard metal compound and that can make them somewhat brittle and easy to break. Spiral type extractors may work but I believe they may tend to break easier than the "Double Edge" type extractor. Left handed, spiral type extractors rely more on outward force as it screws down, to grip. Double edge extractors rely more on the sharp edges and will be less likely to expand the insert when removing.
Once out, the rule of thumb is if the outside diameter of the failed insert is smaller than .66 the Time Sert 5553 could be used. If over .66" use either the Time Sert 5600 or Calvan 38900. The only exceptions to this is if the hole is elongated or a chunk missing in the side of the hole for some reason. If a video inspection camera is not available, some of our customers have been able to use a smart phone camera to take a picture of the hole to make sure it's fairly round.
