  • 800-734-8665 x251 We have customers calling everyday asking for thread repair kits to repair a spark plug hole that was previously fixed, but the repair failed. Although we sell kits for other makes, Ford seems to be the one with the most spark plugs blowing out. Many vehicle owners and auto repair shops end up going with an inexpensive thread repair from a local parts store to save time and because it's convenient. This is understandable because the vehicle is not usable until the repair has been made. However, time is not really being saved if the repair does not last. It even costs more in the long run when the repair isn't done with a quality kit. We have more information about repairing holes for Ford Blown spark plugs. We've been selling spark plug thread repair kits since 2005 to help our customers get their vehicles back on the road with a lasting repair. We find the best fix for our customers. We sell a lot of the Time Sert 5553's which have an insert that measures .68" on the outside edge of the threads. It is muc thicker than a thin coil of wire like a Helicoil and thicker than the solid Heli Coil Sav-A-thread. This is a Big Sert so it is big. Therefore it's big enough to repair the holes when wire type and other thin type inserts were used and have failed. The Big Sert is held in with a locking pin embedded in the side of the insert. It also used lock tite. And thirdly uses the self locking design by the installation driver finishing the bottom threads and cold rolling them which expands the bottom of the insert locking it into place. This is called cold rolling. We like this kit a lot and it works great. It's a good fix. Another kit we sell for limited applications from around 1998 to around 2004 is the Calvan 38900 DLT. It is only for 2 valve Fords with 4.6, 5.4 and 6.8 engines. It does not work on DOHC engines because of the way the line up piece goes into the spark plug well. It does have an insert which is bigger. It measures .73" on the outside diameter which is a little bit bigger than the ones that come in the 5553 Time Sert Kit. It is a different brand so it is held in differently. The manufacturer recommends JB weld and the top of the Calvan insert also has a shoulder on it that tightens down similarly as the head of a bolt does, it tightens up against the contact surface. Now for the biggest. The Time Sert 5600 is the largest Ford Thread repair kit in the world. It has tooling in it that allows you to install an insert inside an insert. This makes the outside diameter the largest available measuring at .77" on the outside of the threads. So if there has been an insert fail that was big or if there was a compression leak on the outside of an insert this is the kit. We have have had customers call that have had a hole burned on the outside of the old parts store repair insert. A hole actually burned through an extra portion of the cylinder head because of the leak. If that is what you have we recommend the Time Sert 5600 because it is the largest and the best chance of repairing the sparkplug hole without replacing the head. If you have a question regarding spark plug thread repair or other applications visit our site or call us at 800-734-8665. wiseautotools.c...

    Could you recommend a mechanic or shop that use the Time Sert in Memphis, TN. I had the dealer repair my 1997 Ford F150 with a heli coil and it did not last. Would like someone to fix it the right way. Thanks in advance.

    I have a 1999 Expedition with the 5.4L. I repaired my spark plug threads with the Cal-Van kit 5 years ago. Ford replaced the spark plugs in it this summer and I just had the motor spit the plug WITH the Cal-Van insert. I did my install right and followed all directions very carefully. The Time Sert 5600 kit would seemingly work great, but $473.92 is steep! Is there a kit for just one cylinder... or maybe a rental? My truck and many others with this motor are on their last leg and we just want to get them running without sinking too much money into a vehicle that has little value. Does anybody offer 5600 tool kit rentals to keep the cost down for the users? Maybe you can refer me to a mechanic in my area (Zip Code 61108, Rockford, IL) who might have invested in this kit? I'm sure his labor and materials on one cylinder would be less than half the price of your entire kit that I just don't need. Thanks

      Hi Gary, sorry to hear there was a problem. We've sold thousands of the Calvan 38900 kits since 2005 and have only heard of one other case of the Calvan insert not holding as expected. We are required, to advertise the manufacturer's suggested list price, or MAP (Minimum Advertised Price) on Time Sert products. We are always less expensive than the manufacturer though because they offer no free shipping. We also can offer other advantages such as Free Tips, that answer common questions. We have unadvertised specials. We also have the cylinder leak tester that helps determine valves are closed, like comes in the 38900 kit. We'll be able to assist getting the best deal for your situation. And unlike other websites we have access by toll free number to master techs with many years of "hands on" experience to help answer our customer's questions. Call to discuss during business hours at 800-734-8665 x251. wiseautotools.com/time-sert-5600-triple-o-size-spark-plug-thread-kit-w-free-389-4000/

    Hello I have question I have bad spark plug thread hole diameter is 15.8 mm what insert size you thing I need to make it fit with inside measure 14mm*1.25mm I confused about insert outer diameter

    • @WiseAutoTools
      @WiseAutoTools  10 років тому

      Masses, 15.8mm converts to .62". I'd like to know the application before making a recommendation. The first kit I talked about in the video measures .68" on the outside edge of the threads which means it would measure about .66" on the lowest part of the threads. That doesn't provide a lot of room to work. Please provide the year, make, model and engine size so I can make the best recommendation. Others reading this, please provide as many details on your comment so I can make the best recommendation for a spark plug thread repair kit for your specific application. I monitor comments here and will respond quickly. Can't wait and would rather talk on the phone? Call 800-734-TOOL (8665) Extension 251. Phones are open 10-5 Eastern Time. Next Day shipping (included on many Time Sert kits) available anywhere in the USA so you can get your vehicle (or your customer's) back on the road.

      I would use the 38900 for your application or the Time Sert 5600 call to discuss. Our kits provide a permanent type repair opposed to parts store temporary fixes. Remember we have 38900 and recommend the CS1 which includes the 266 thread locker and tap clip, not included in the 38900 kit. Also, if checking out on our website write the word tips in comments or mention that you want tips to us when ordering on the phone 800-524-9783 so we will email our exclusive tips which answer common questions we have had over the years. Our Calvan kit has a cylinder leak tester, a guide, tooling that is long enough to reach down the wells properly and wrench flats on tooling that accept sockets for your air ratchet or regular ratchet. Instructions are written and on DVD. Our Calvan inserts have a lip on the top to prevent screwing too far. Sav A Threads and Lisle type inserts can screw all the way into the cylinder and fall in. Since our inserts have a lip at the top they tighten down similar to how a bolt fastens. And the thread locker prevents backing out on the next plug change. Heres the link to the Calvan 38900 with 8 inserts. www.wiseautotools.com/calvan-38900-8-ford-4-6-5-4-6-8-spark-plug-port-repair-kit-w-8-inserts/

    You mention a hole burned passed a insert, I recently installed a dorman thread kit in a e250 with a 4.6, the plug is still fixed in the insert supplied with the kit as is the insert in the original threads. There is a compression loss has me thinking it's a hole or the plug expanded cracking the insert. Heat is my question could this aluminum melting heat be due to a lean condition on that cylinder. Mind I'm not asking for tech support but for a hole to be burnt past a insert there has to be a great deal of heat to do so.

    • @WiseAutoTools
      @WiseAutoTools  10 років тому

      Billy Eason More than likely the compression is leaking along the side of the insert because it did not seal properly. We've had customers report this problem over the years and yes there's a lot of heat coming from the explosion in the cylinder especially considering that the plug fires thousands of times even on short trips. Call or visit our product listing at our website to order our kit to do a permanent repair. wiseautotools.com/calvan-et-38900-ford-5-4l-spark-plug-port-repair-kit-w-one-insert/ 800-734-8665.

    can't seem to. get plug hole to rethread people say to just pack JB weld on it. let dry overnight. can. I do this?

    • @WiseAutoTools
      @WiseAutoTools  9 років тому

      +Teeney White JB Weld alone will not hold up against the heat and compression that a combustion chamber deals out. A thread repair kit like we sell is best for a permanaent repair. Steer clear from the parst store kits that are just temporary and end up leaving the hole bieeven bigger. Call M-F 10-5PM for a specific (kit) recommendation. 800-524-9783

    Had a Mustang that blew a plug. Selling it off was the best decision I've ever made, and I'll never buy another mod powered vehicle (4.6, 5.4, 6.8) again.
