I am just amazed that ford so obviously engineered in a major flaw. Then when this happens, they want you to buy another flawed head. There is absolutely no question about it, and they know it because they have engineers, 4 1/2 threads will fail.
This should make people think, those who buy used vehicles. One should research a lot to see if there are designed fails like this in the vehicle they are considering.
Real good video tutorial for those who already have one of these. I sure would go this route and not buy another flawed head.

In addition to blowing the cylinder out to remove debris, I have heard that putting a length of cotton clothesline into the cylinder before making chips will catch most of them. Then when you pull the cord out them chips are caught on the cord.

This is without a doubt one of the best repair videos I have ever watched. Very thorough explanation. Well done Ron. I don't even have a ford....I just happened along the video about spark plugs blowing out and ended up here to find out about metal chips from boring out the sparkplug hole.

Pardon me for being a SA. Should the spiral fluted REAMER drop past the JIG, use a magnet to remove it from the hole. Maximum stroke is 4", so unless the piston TDC two inches below the spark plug, the tool will rest centered in the hole. Reamers produce acceptably round holes, drill bits do not. A cutaway view of a drilled hole, in metal, will show the flute pattern in the walls. Jigs orient the tool to the work piece, fixtures orient the work piece to the tool.

Just like the northstar all these manf. makes some stupid decisions and we have to pay for it. So I hope if you check your plugs frequently this won't happen? Buying a gently used 2004 expedition with a 5.4 and hope it has already been handled or hope to prevent it.

I used a vacuum to clean out the cylinder instead of compressed air , small shavings can get stuck between piston and cylinder walls

Funny, I see an IC369 Coil. I work for NAPA and that is the MOST common coil I sell bar none. And that APP103? plug. He is using the cheap SB line coil as well. A little lube for the drilling might have been an OK idea.

There is no way that I would attempt to do that job with the cylinder heads on the engine. Even though it would take a much longer I would pull the cylinder head, this way you don’t run the risk of some of the metal shavings being left behind in the cylinder and destroying the engine.

Ron, great video, thanks for making it. I will doing this on my son's truck in a couple weekends. question, I see you use JB weld to help keep the insert in the head, i've also seen others recommend Loctite Red 271. should both pretty much work the same, the loctite is rated for high temperature where I don't see that the JB weld is.

Great question. One of the things that I've changed during my installs since this video was shot years ago is the fact that I now use J-B Weld under the Hat portion of the insert and then I used to 71 red threadlocker on the actual threads. So yes you are correct

Excellent video Ron. Hope it doesn't happen to me. On my '98 F150 w/5.4l Triton (121K miles) I just replaced all 8 coils & plugs. The plugs had been replaced at 60K, 6 of 8 coils replaced over the years so I did the job myself this time. Unbelievable. I'm still licking my wounds! Cuts, abrasions, skinned knees, elbows, torn finger nails, etc. I found 3 plugs that were loose. Do you think the plugs get loose before blowing out and pulling out the threads? Any way, great video, wish you were closer to me.

My 1999 Toyota Tercel has gone 278,000 kilometers, never 'blew' a plug or replaced a coil pack. What's the estimate to have a pro do this repair of a Ford fuck up? And GM's ignition switch is over $600 here. This is pathetic, I'm glad I never bought American shit autos. No wonder sales are falling, Chrysler has lost almost 8%.

  • @noretreat2074

If the e-clip stops the reamer 1/8” from passing through, just slide a spacer over reamer, and stop against the pin with its length 1/8” short of where the e-clip was. this will eliminate the undesirable ridge and still not cut into cylinder as if you used pin as a stop. IMO
Hope I haven’t confused this idea.

Nice job, not everyone can afford to take their vehicles in to have them fixed. Ford does have some problems from time to time, but with proper care and maintenance they have been the longest lasting vehicles I have owned. Other problems, stuck plugs, plungers on 02 to 06 trannys needing brass plunger seal kits, and mid 2000 plus throttle bodies needing the updated tp sensors or replacement and also along with a new egr valves does wonders. Some of their new tech is nice, but sometimes they can create more problems than they are worth. American vehicle sales have been down 70 over the years and that is very sad. I prefer the simple and reliable motors over a lot of the newer designs.

    Hi Ron
i have a question for you. Have you ever put an insert in after it previously had a dorman self tapping insert in it. This is the kit with the smaller sparkplug in it. I was wondering if the dorman kit actually enlarges the plug hole to the point where you can't use the calvan insert anymore. Your thoughts and experience on this would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks Dan

Ron I really need you opinion on this. I recently got a 00 excursion v10 with the 4.30 from the factory and 122k miles for 4k. It's runs great pulls my rv with no problems. It has 2inch lift, rear tow air bags and I average about 12.5 mpg. I have a 86 year old friend who's willing to sell me his 01 limited edition excursion 7.3 for $4.5k but it does need about $3k worth of work. He's the only owner, has religiously serviced it at his local Ford shop, has all the service records, never abused it, and recently installed new glow plugs, injectors, and all four new tires. Should I pull the trigger and buy his or keep my v10? Thanks ahead of time.

Great video, but I've also seen a tip, slap some grease on the drill bit in the wide channels and on the tap to catch the shavings, it will hold most of them and pull them out for less cleanup with air. You will have to use some brake clean after to clean out the grease before threading the insert in.

    • @ronwilliams9382
      @ronwilliams9382 9 років тому

Jeff Sims Yes that works well, however the final stage of this process requires you to use JB weld on the threads of insert before install. Its very difficult to clean the newly cut threads and therefore I want the threads very clean so seal is perfect. besides blow gun gets all debris out. I use bore scope to make sure. Thanks.

Not a good idea! Although backyard mechanics will tell you to do this, the truth is the shavings are often big and can be spiral in shape and are soft aluminum. there is always a possibility of the shavings getting stuck in valve seat and hold the valve open when engine starts causing damage. Also the shavings will also travel back into intake manifold causing other cylinders to get debris in them. And the last possibility is the shavings getting into the catalytic converter. Its best to stick with the instructions on this one. blow the cylinder out with compressed air. It will yield a 99% effective clean.

no. i dont use cutting oil. i have done hundreds of these and never had any problems. the reason i dont use oils or grease on tap or drill is that its to hard to clean new threads so the loctite or jb weld will stick. i have stopped using the jb weld because sometimes the inserts will come out with the spark plug next time it is removed. it does not harm the threads but its been an inconvenience to say the least. so i now use 271 red thread locker to keep the inserts in.
      thanks for the question.

One more question I do not have an Air impact is there enough room to use a regular drill.

Robert Tice usually not. Front ones on drivers side may possibly get to with drill

Haha.. You buy Dodge parts in the Walmart Tupperware department. GM parts are made In China. I just bought some Genuine GM parts. The package says, Made In China. I can buy Dorman and get made in China.

Im surprised no one had picked on me for saying 6.8L V-8! I was working on a V10 but had verbal malfunction. After 30 years doing this you think I would get that one right.

+Ron Williams I caught the flub immediately! But you know I think you should use thread cutting oil because it will produce non-chipped threads. Anyone else viewing, DO NOT use regular motor oil, it will not produce satisfactory results.

Folks please take time to reads this Post!
I reference taking the c-clip off the drill bit index. If you are beginner please leave it on so you don't send the tap to far into the head. I have done lots of these and that is my way of doing them.
If you send tap to far into head it can pass through into cylinder and very hard to get back out.
