You could go with combining fairy and dragon into a sort of "fairy tale" type, as they're both pretty magic-based for a stem-based region, and there's scientists who specifically research folklore and fairy tales, and how legends reflect the societies that made them! Of course you could always make "fairy type" be more like an "emotions type" and have it be a psychology thing, if you wanted to keep fairy seperate and relate it to a science (that is if psychic type isn't already filling an emotions type- the new naming conventions are super cool, though!)

I also agree that “Dendro” works well for the equivalent of the grass type. Pokémon itself didn’t seem to care whether it named their “plant” type off in a way that fit proper classifications, and they even classified mushroom Pokémon as Grass types. I think the fact that the name “Dendro” isn’t quite accurate to what the type means could actually serve as a good tangential learning opportunity for players. They would see this new word (which rhymes with the other starter types, btw) and ask themselves what that word actually means, since it’s not one you’d usually encounter in a game about mon-collecting or a game centered around elemental typings. And the fact that such a learning opportunity could come so early in the game, while also fitting the fun PhD starter trio abbreviation, would definitely serve to set the tone of the entire game. It would give the game a unique feel, while also not feeling completely out of left field (since it was mentioned already that “Dendro” was used as an element in Genshin Impact), and demonstrate that this game has a lot of great references to science and math in it. Dendro for the grass type would work because while it does refer more exclusively to trees, another game also names it's generic nature element dendro and half of the effects used for it are more digital than tree and plant like, so I doubt anyone would bat much of an eye at the inconsistency
The word used in japanese is literally "Grass", but can mean "Plant" in siturations where it fits more. Multiple other languages realized this and that is why it is called Plant type in for example german. Figuring out a new english name is pointless, just fix the localization error.
I'm definitely not the first to say this, but Dendro has as much of a reason to be the name of a type as Grass does. You can get away with playing fast and loose with plants. And I do think that maybe combining the Dragon and Fairy type (into a "Fable" type, maybe?) Would be a good idea. It'd let you get across the idea that "X is a dragon" while not limiting yourself to just dragon tropes for both the designs and type match-ups. Plus, having fables be super effective against fables is a fun way to play with the tropes of fables, since it's so often one magical creature that stops another... If not a metal-clad knight or gun-toting hunter, of course. (Also having a Fable about a fuckin artillery cannon just sounds funny, but also still kinda accurate to fables (robin hood, anyone?)) Fables could also hit the Anthropology side of science to really fit in with the gimmick, since Fables are a mixture of made-up stories, life lessons, and true events, albeit usually embellished.
I like the process of "reverse-engineering" a monster game from pokemon, you created this based on the best and you are now polishing it and giving your own touches in order of making it unique.
5:12 I think Skill Link maybe a better ability to illustrate precision. If a multi-hit move hits it is guaranteed to hit for the maximum amount, but if the move misses then "all of the hits miss". It would serves as a nice compliment to No Guard; which does not guarantee that variable Multi-Hit moves will hit the maximum amount, just that they will hit (Except for Multi-Hit moves that use accuracy checks like Triple Axel, Triple Kick, & Population Bomb).
The dragon type is mostly used as "pure infinity energy" or the energy pokemon use, from a lore perspective. Normal type would be more "every kind of energy in one type"
Incredible video, always fun to watch. You might have already considered it, but maybe for the grass type you can call it "flora" like in flora and fauna.
It fits a lot. "Flora" has been used as term to refer to fungi & algae which have been inspiration for some Grass-Type Pokémon. It's also been used to refer to bacteria, which haven't received an official Pokémon representative(as far as I know).
I feel like a fire/steel type based on the idea of burning magnesium could be really interesting. Dunno what you'd call it but it would obviously learn things like flash and explode
So if the idea is to separate your monster catcher from Pokémon, perhaps you could have 4 starters, which represent the 4 elements (Water, Fire, Earth/Grass, Air). Also I think a good name would be Fauna, as in "Flora and Fauna".
Hopefully you see this. :) An idea for a unique ability for the firework pokemon would be giving special effects to all Sp. Attacks based on the 'color' of the firework, in other words, based on the element inside the firework. As in give them a 10-15% chance to induce a freeze, paralysis, poison, flinch etc. Possibly tack on a 5-10% burn chance to all special moves, or a 30%+ chance with physical? Just a thought. And forms can swap like Deoxys/Rotom in that you go to a location to feed your firework dragon a specific element.
"I don't want a type thats stronger than others" I have a completely opposite approach In a pokemon-like game I may attempt to do in unspecified future with 97% chance of failing that attempt, I want to make one type "broken" on a type chart Fire type. Because like... you know, fire hurts. I would have to completely change starter formula also but lets ignore that Fire would be deceptivly bad. At first glance it might seem absurdly op, effective against most types, very little types that are effective against it. But I would actually make it pretty weak. Fire type moves that non fire type mons would be able to learn would be weak. Something that can still hurt, but like, not the best. Solid B tier, good in general, but there are better generalist moves, and far better specialist moves. Other fire type moves would be pretty strong, but only part fire type mons could learn them. Here's another nerf: Unless fire mons have weak base stats (in which case like, whatever), they would be monotype, or maybe triple idk, what I have in my head is a very vauge idea that I don't even think I will pursue, but if I do I might do more than 2 types per mon. ANYWAY, strong in base stat fire mons would be paired with types that make weaknesses worse. Instead of 2x weakness to water or ground, it is now 4x weakness. And moves of antifire types would be good even on non antifiretype mons. And one final idea - A generalist move that is just kinda okay, like a C or maybe D tier, but with a caveat, it deals more damage to fire type pokemons and ignores their resistances. Boom, I just made something that at first glance looks absolutely broken, but in actuality other pieces of game balance morphs around it to make it pretty weak in result. So yeah Sorry for writing a book
I like the idea of mering dragon and fairy into an "unknown" or "mystical" type, representing hw science is all about learning new things, and there's lots left to learn. Could be a counterart to psychic, which is about known facts and data, compared to intuition and mystery.
I'm not a fan of "Science" VS "Magic" (as in anything not science, Sorcery, Psi and aliens for some reason). I'm big on Thaumaturgy. I think "Unknown" or "Anomolous" would be better.
Your videos have inspired me to think about my own project going from a fangame to an original idea. I just wanted to share some of my thoughts as a fellow homebrew barista, as I've been delving more into conceptual aspects & game design than the visual design. What I think is that Dragon shares its place in the formula as a phylogenic type, along with Bug and Flying. This and Flying are not directly so, but clearly gesturing towards a "Bird-type" and "Lizard-type" respectively. This is part of my plan in splitting types between creatures and moves, so that their character as a species will inform their elemental resistances in some way
I love seeing these videos. Honestly I was drawn to these videos because I'm also writing up Ideas for a Creature Capture game of my own (I have no dev logs though) and it's really interesting that you also thought to combine Ground and Rock into a single type, *and* remove Dragon. But it's also interesting to see how different our reasonings for doing so, and method of doing so is surprisingly different. Maybe I should make a dev log of some sort.
_And so, we gather here today mourning over the loss of our beloved Dragonite and all of our beloved dragon Pokemon. They'll be gone but not forgotten. Amen to our favorite Pokemon._
Poison also really shouldn't be a "type". It can remain as a status condition, but the type itself can just be part of the Dark type, which is what the TCG does.
I'd recommend checking out DeltaSeeker's video, "How Accurate are Pokemon Types in the TCG? ". In it, he proposes reducing the amount of card types down to 9, based on how similar the types are offensively & thematically. The Types he came up with are: Colorless(Normal, Flying, & Dragon), Grass(Grass & Bug). Fire, Water(Water & Ice), Lighting(Electric), Fighting(Fighting & Ground), Metal(Steel & Rock), Psychic(Psychic, Fairy, & Poison), and Darkness(Dark & Ghost).
I think they should instead change it to something like "chemical" as I think it'd be suited for stemma-mon designs based on pollution, corrosives, and medicines as well as some other chemical-related concepts. Might be a bit broad but with types like flying, it could very well work. Plus, more Breaking Bad references.
As for a ‘dendro’ type, I don’t see a reason to NOT have it. While your plant-based mons’ may not be always trees, it’s not as if all grass types are well, grass either. You could say grass is just the most abundant and known plant but trees are not really all that different in that aspect either. In the end, I’ve seen other places use ‘dendro’ and I see no reason not to use it if it generally fits a theme of plants and in general, works well with the ‘PHD’ thing you have going for you. (Considering this whole video was about Dragon types, I find it funny I never bothered to talk about it until right then. Huh.)
For a replacement to Fairy, maybe you can go with a "Light", type? It can both include metaphorically "light" stuff, like charming cute fairy-ish stuff, as well as literally drawing from scientific concepts of the electromagnetic spectrum. There's a lot of cool science behind the properties of light so I bet there are quite a few designs that can be made based off of it.
but fairy's aren't really benevolent in fairy tales nor in pokemon. If anything they're borderline dark type level of schemers (well, some of em are). Psychic acts more like light types than fairies are.
Here's a fun idea, poison could be called pathogen or something similar, then you can design the poison mons around the 6 pathogens and have fungal or parasitic type moves, like a whole disease theme
It's quite funny to me that you arrive at the same conclusions and decisions regarding types, than I did - as soon as you realised this is not a pokemon game, but a project of its own.
That's how I feel. At this point, making it it's own project and completely forgoing the Pokemon name would be better not just for copyright but allows for commercial purposes and additional funding.
It is really funny to me that you made the snap dragons grass fairy, as the dried up seed capuls of a snap dragon is sometimes called a "fairy skull" and they do look like them.
Maybe there could be a type that could take a role similar to dragon, the essential type is a type given to mons that represent really basic but also important concepts of stem like temperature,light,force...
With the fireworks Fakemon, maybe it has a signature move that raises a stat dependent on the held item element/compound it is holding, which could also affect the colour of the move’s animation.
No please keep Dendro! Not only for the pun but also if Genshin Impact uses that name for it’s more nature units and it isn’t specifically just the trees for them. I don’t see why you should limit yourself either. I really like your PhD pun! As well as it gives all the types, a good sort of mouth feel, and distinguish first letter to have them all be different from another. I hope that last part made sense.
I love the idea of having each type end with an -o! I do a similar thing with my element system: The dualities are Alpha/Omega, Aqua/Lava, Flora/Gaia, Avia/Galva, Pneuma/Mecha, Medica/Vira, and Anima/Cosma. More ideas for the grass type could be Chloro, Floro, or Horto.
I'm looking forward to hear about how your equivalent of the fairy type, considering fairies/magic being probably the first thing anyone thinks of when it comes to something as far from STEM as you can get. Neat creatures! I like how the salamence-style head extensions on Gunkurate actually have a functional purpose, that's some pretty clever designing!
Really fun project, every vid gets me thinking of some stem stuff that could be interesting. Logic gates would be interesting but not sure what ones would make sense to choose. Types of gears could be cool. Evolutionary line going from regular > bevel > rack. Perhaps? Something for the belousov zhabotinsky reaction could be a really fun design.
I feel like AND, NOT, and OR should be there because they're the main three, and most other gates are derived off of them. Maybe XOR could also appear.
About types, I find it quite interesting to see you make such bold decisions, but then again...this is coming from someone who will break the water "type" into two different factions if I ever create a creature catching game or something similar.
If you're wondering, the two factions will be those who use water as an elemental attack (The Water type) and the other faction is relegated to those who just live in the water and know how to battle in it. I have a few ideas for the name for this type. Aquatic, Marine, and Fish
Have you seen UmbreonLibris's "Complete Reboot of Pokémon Types" video? He talks about dividing up types into three major categories; Body, Element, & Style. Body Types describe what a Pokémon is and act as the egg group, like Bird or Mineral. Element Types describe more of what an attack is made up of, like Air or Earth. Style Types are more about how an attack is performed, like Aerial or Martial. He also has an Hierarchy of types system, types are listed as primary, secondary, or tertiary; where primary types have the greatest impact on a Pokémon design wise & mechanically... I ask because because he divided up Water Types into Fish, Water(Elemental), & Aquatic, which seem very similar to how you're dividing it up. It seems that it could serve as a nice source of ideas, at least.
Monster Hunter also has Dragon as an element, I think you could approach it from two angles: Combine Fighting with Dragon and name it "Primal" (the manifestation of raw energy which the Mons channel in different ways, having two "philosophies" sort of speak: the martial artists and the dragons/beasts)
I think you could still keep the dragon type. Maybe rather than calling it the dragon type, call it the arcane type. This could apply to all arcane creatures with arcane magical abilities, not just dragons.
I also developing my fakemon region where I mostly buff Bug and Ice-type. Not from their weaknesses and strengths though. I add new status ailments and weathers.
I love your videos and creative process so much. It makes my day every time you post. I'm becoming a patron. Also if, when producing the game, you need any help with the art asset workload, I'd love to help, I am a fairly experienced artist myself!
call grass dendro, because it sounds good, we might not care if it's referring to trees. also what if you called fairy something like fay (but you could also add and o at the end), or even faerie.
Does it really matter if your monsters are trees or not? Pokémon calls it “grass” but none of them are actually based on grass. It’s just to get the idea across.
yo im pretty early for once! very excited for the video, dragon type was pretty much the 'legendary' type and was rare. Wondering if you're going to replace it or anything, haven't watched the vid yet 💀
What I might with the dragon type if I made my own game is perhaps rename it to something along the line with legendary type and give them an immunity to pokeballs (except for possibly the master ball). That way, I have the option to make some uncatchable bosses in the game and / or require players to catch pre evolved forms and train them up into legendary/dragon types. (Possible having secret 4th stage evolutions of starters become legendary types)
Maybe there could still be a dragon type equivalent. Maybe an arcane type. It could apply to powers and appearances of all arcane creatures, not just dragons
Seeing different approaches to the 'Dragon' concept in alternative creature collectors is particularly interesting since it's not a standard element at all. I had a set of types for my own concept. The closest to Dragon I had was a type I called Monster. It was inspired not only by stereotypical Dragon Pokemon, but also others that fit the classical 'monstrous' Pokemon archetype, such as Tyranitar, Kangaskhan, Nidoking and Rhydon. It's a crude stand in at best as it wouldn't function anything like Dragon at all, but I liked the idea behind Dragon enough I wanted an allusion to it.
4:07 And most of the Grass mons aren't grass(actually, are any of them?). I say go for Dendro type, it sounds sick as hell and the PHD connection is awesome.
somebody mentioned a "fairy tale" type in another comment, and I was actually going to say something similar, but having a "myth" type pokemon. this could cover any pokemon that are based on fairly tales, mythes, or stories. this could include actual fairies, dragons, even cryptid-based pokemon like a bigfoot! there actually is a game that has done this, that being Wizard101, with Myth being a whole school of magic on its own along with the other elements.
If you are removing the dragon type, that also means that you are going to remove the fairy type, normal type, and fighting types, because all three of the types are not usually an element...
If I had to guess he isn't going to remove those types. The video implies the reason for the removal of the dragon typing is less to do with it not being an element and more that the mechanical role of dragons being super overpowered beings won't fit the balance of the game.
Aether could be a neat addition. If you don't want it to make certain creatures too good it could still serve as a unique type belonging to a handful of moves that can't be resisted
Dendro type could still work. Most grass types aren’t grasses either, so I don’t see why tree type should imply every member is a tree. The PHD pun is too cute to miss out on!

Dendro for the grass type would work because while it does refer more exclusively to trees, another game also names it's generic nature element dendro and half of the effects used for it are more digital than tree and plant like, so I doubt anyone would bat much of an eye at the inconsistency
Yeah. I don't know why he's stressing over that detail when Pokemon decided to call all plant-based Pokemon "Grass-types".
@@Mad-Goose It's translation from Japanese, so it probably means something different.
The word used in japanese is literally "Grass", but can mean "Plant" in siturations where it fits more. Multiple other languages realized this and that is why it is called Plant type in for example german. Figuring out a new english name is pointless, just fix the localization error.
I genuinely get excited when I see there’s a new Nortist upload. Every video is so good
Flora could be an option for grass. That would include all types flowers, trees, grasses, etc.
(Also having a Fable about a fuckin artillery cannon just sounds funny, but also still kinda accurate to fables (robin hood, anyone?))
Fables could also hit the Anthropology side of science to really fit in with the gimmick, since Fables are a mixture of made-up stories, life lessons, and true events, albeit usually embellished.
Given how prevalent the connection between dragons and shooting stars is in folklore, I'm surprised that Pokémon didn't do a meteorite dragon yet.
Gekgoo is so perfect..
In inspiration and design.
My favourite mon of yours yet
Incredible video, always fun to watch. You might have already considered it, but maybe for the grass type you can call it "flora" like in flora and fauna.
It fits a lot. "Flora" has been used as term to refer to fungi & algae which have been inspiration for some Grass-Type Pokémon. It's also been used to refer to bacteria, which haven't received an official Pokémon representative(as far as I know).
if normal type were to also have a name change it could be the fauna due to many moves being animalistic
I feel like a fire/steel type based on the idea of burning magnesium could be really interesting. Dunno what you'd call it but it would obviously learn things like flash and explode
The "Charm" type is a good replacement of the fairy type
So if the idea is to separate your monster catcher from Pokémon, perhaps you could have 4 starters, which represent the 4 elements (Water, Fire, Earth/Grass, Air). Also I think a good name would be Fauna, as in "Flora and Fauna".
Hopefully you see this. :)
An idea for a unique ability for the firework pokemon would be giving special effects to all Sp.
"I don't want a type thats stronger than others"
I have a completely opposite approach
In a pokemon-like game I may attempt to do in unspecified future with 97% chance of failing that attempt, I want to make one type "broken" on a type chart
Fire type. Because like... you know, fire hurts. I would have to completely change starter formula also but lets ignore that
Fire would be deceptivly bad.
So yeah
Sorry for writing a book
Maybe I should make a dev log of some sort.
these thumbnails are insane, keep up the good work!
_And so, we gather here today mourning over the loss of our beloved Dragonite and all of our beloved dragon Pokemon. They'll be gone but not forgotten. Amen to our favorite Pokemon._
Poison also really shouldn't be a "type". It can remain as a status condition, but the type itself can just be part of the Dark type, which is what the TCG does.
maybe the type could be toxic or venomous instead
Huh.)
I absolutely adore the firework and snapdragon mons!! they're so charming and cute
YES.
NORTIST UPLOAD.
THIS IS A GREAT DAY TODAY.
SCP-1762: Where the Dragons Went.
SCP-1762 is a cardboard box, marked with the words 'Here Were Dragons'.
It's funny that removing rock and dragon types have meme thumbnails
Here's a fun idea, poison could be called pathogen or something similar, then you can design the poison mons around the 6 pathogens and have fungal or parasitic type moves, like a whole disease theme
It's quite funny to me that you arrive at the same conclusions and decisions regarding types, than I did - as soon as you realised this is not a pokemon game, but a project of its own.
That's how I feel.
At this point, making it it's own project and completely forgoing the Pokemon name would be better not just for copyright but allows for commercial purposes and additional funding.
I know I'm late here but I gotta say this would clear up a lot of typing debates in pokemon over mons like Gyarados or Charzard before the megas
new n0rtist video yippee
i love the designs on this one
so cute mons
It is really funny to me that you made the snap dragons grass fairy, as the dried up seed capuls of a snap dragon is sometimes called a "fairy skull" and they do look like them.
A fairy type “renaming” that would make sense is the phero type (off of pheromone), due to the charming nature of fairy types.
I like that! It might be too similar to Pyro though.
@@anthonynorman7545 it's only similar in spelling tbh
Maybe there could be a type that could take a role similar to dragon, the essential type is a type given to mons that represent really basic but also important concepts of stem like temperature,light,force...
"Most of my grass types aren't trees"
Most ""grass"" Pokémon aren't literal Grass. Go for it!
So, Dragon to water, fire earth, and air. Is like plasma to liquid, solid, and gas.
I would’ve added a diapsid type like reptiles to dinos or archosaurs to pterasuarus the marine reptiles to birds to lizards to snakes to allat
With the fireworks Fakemon, maybe it has a signature move that raises a stat dependent on the held item element/compound it is holding, which could also affect the colour of the move’s animation.
Now it’s scientifically accurate
No please keep Dendro! Not only for the pun but also if Genshin Impact uses that name for it’s more nature units and it isn’t specifically just the trees for them. I don’t see why you should limit yourself either. I really like your PhD pun! As well as it gives all the types, a good sort of mouth feel, and distinguish first letter to have them all be different from another. I hope that last part made sense.
I mean, Dendro despite not having tree mons would be fine considering there's not really any Grass type Pokemon currently that represent, well, GRASS
I like dendro as grass type!
@@CoralReaper707 Would you then do the same to the flying type?
@@icantthinkofaname4723 I'd just make it a wind type.
@@Daehpo yes I have seen that video. I was more subconsciously influenced by it more than anything, though.
I think split evolutions for Drarkle would be cool to show off different kinds of fireworks, just two or three.
My man is about to rip and tear until there aren’t any types left lol
Monster Hunter also has Dragon as an element, I think you could approach it from two angles: Combine Fighting with Dragon and name it "Primal" (the manifestation of raw energy which the Mons channel in different ways, having two "philosophies" sort of speak: the martial artists and the dragons/beasts)
Weapon Attacks VS Natural Weapon Attacks?
@@harrietr.5073 Yeah pretty much, y'know like fighting styles based on animals and the moves animals perform to defend or attack
I think you could still keep the dragon type. Maybe rather than calling it the dragon type, call it the arcane type. This could apply to all arcane creatures with arcane magical abilities, not just dragons.
i am honored to go by the same name as the new fire type
I also developing my fakemon region where I mostly buff Bug and Ice-type. Not from their weaknesses and strengths though. I add new status ailments and weathers.
Maybe have dragon as a energy type of formed from quantum mechanics of some sort and combining it with fairy as a much more powerful "cosmic" type?
I think Dendro would work really well! Not every grass type Pokémon has a designed based on grass
i like how all of your custom types end in "o".
Your videos are incredibly high quality. Glad to have found this channel. 🫶
I think the phd pun for pyro hydro dendro is well worth the fact it technically doesn’t encompass all plants
Mixing Ground and Rock types : Ok, good reasoning, I like it.
Removing Dragon Type : Now you've gone too far buddy.
This thumbnail goes hard
I love your videos and creative process so much. It makes my day every time you post. I'm becoming a patron. Also if, when producing the game, you need any help with the art asset workload, I'd love to help, I am a fairly experienced artist myself!
call grass dendro, because it sounds good, we might not care if it's referring to trees.
also what if you called fairy something like fay (but you could also add and o at the end), or even faerie.
I’m so glad I thought of the fantasy type instead of the dragon type it allows me to make imaginary creatures instead of just dragons
its fine to call grass types dendro in your region, barely any grass types are actually Grass
Like the closest is maybe tangela? but its a bush
New n0Rtist video!! Yippee!!!!
Renaming fairy to something like the Arcanum type for that sort of powerful and mysterious feel.
I like how TemTem did their Dragons - digital type.
It's a crude stand in at best as it wouldn't function anything like Dragon at all, but I liked the idea behind Dragon enough I wanted an allusion to it.
the thumbnail naurrr 😭😭😭😩
I love all the videos that you have done
Suggestion: Make the fireworks dragon Pyro/Metal, you even discussed how fireworks are made using metal powders to create different colours.
4:07 And most of the Grass mons aren't grass(actually, are any of them?). I say go for Dendro type, it sounds sick as hell and the PHD connection is awesome.
Here be dragons
What about Flora type??
Dragon type could be arcane type which is magic or used in reference to dragons
4:11 you could call grass types “Gaia”
But dendro works very well anyways so I would use that
somebody mentioned a "fairy tale" type in another comment, and I was actually going to say something similar, but having a "myth" type pokemon. this could cover any pokemon that are based on fairly tales, mythes, or stories. this could include actual fairies, dragons, even cryptid-based pokemon like a bigfoot! there actually is a game that has done this, that being Wizard101, with Myth being a whole school of magic on its own along with the other elements.
I think dendro can work since trees are plants anyway. It can be a generalization if you want it to be. You can always add tree critters later
That thumbnail is relatable
Dendro sounds so good
Aether could be a neat addition. If you don't want it to make certain creatures too good it could still serve as a unique type belonging to a handful of moves that can't be resisted
i love the pun of Pyro Hydro Dendro
Dendro type could still work. Most grass types aren’t grasses either, so I don’t see why tree type should imply every member is a tree.
The PHD pun is too cute to miss out on!
