I just watched another young man take apart a work boot and he did it so haphazardly and roughly I couldn't get over the difference in technique... kudos to you sir on taking pride in your job.. I loved this video. I watch pretty much all the repair videos but making a series on popular shoes/boots and explaining what makes them good or bad would be excellent.
I would love to see you put these back together and compare end results to the originals. For example, I assume you would not hand sew the soles to the welt. There would be a difference that could be detected if it was being looked for, but with no diminishment of the quality of the shoe. Thanks for your videos.

@@holyfox94 i have to disagree. A lot of products assembled in Europe have a lot of Asia made parts and you don't complain about. For example there's no better than Chinese silk. Just saying. And personally i find this design more beautiful but it's just my taste. However if i can get them for 600 less and it's still European leather I'm in. The fact that brands stands as status symbol isn't right for me. If you have sharp mind , good energy and be confident you don't need any outrageous name to show off. China for it's own market have some outstanding quality 👌 I've been there because we had some clients who invited us. What i can tell you about product quality it's on par if not better than rest of the world. Why China got reputation is simply due to the fact that majority of Europe looks for CHEAP. Almost my entire dress shoe collection is hand grade MTM (aka "semi-bespoke") and bench grade MTO from artisanal makers in East and Southeast Asia, so the high level of quality here does not come as a surprise to me at all. In this comparison, I'd personally gravitate toward Yearn based solely (no pun intended, heh) on the fact that their shoes are hand welted and outsoled vs the GY welt on the Lobbs. And with that difference in price? Oof, that's hardly a contest.

I thought it was refreshing and insightful to see Dan's professional opinion on such high quality shoes and WHY they are high quality. I'd much rather have a cobbler's opinion on a shoe rather than a sales person's; just as I'd rather have a mechanic's opinion on a car, etc. Thanks for another great video Dan!

Great video as always Dan. You asked, and I definitely do like this type of video, and would like to see you do more of the same type. I like the quality of the Yearn shoes, and I love the wholecut style. But, I like the John Lobb's better due to their toe design. I would never wear a pair of shoes with a toe design like the Yearns, which I assume is their OXF 719 model. I do, however, like the Yearn OXF 215 shoe with a rounded toe. It's not a question of quality between the two shoes for me as both are obviously a quality shoe, at least in considering the construction of each. It's just the style of the shoes. On the other hand, if it was the Renaissance period and the Yearns included a sword with purchase I would probably wear them for my swashbuckling adventures. :-)
I'm literally crying, I recently bought beautiful hand made shoes made domestically in Australia, and I'm watching you dismantle these fine pieces of footwear just for us. I could neverrrrrrrr
I recently received two pais of Yearn's including the one you took apart. They are some of the nicest shoes Ihave ever purchased and the patina is outstanding, even better in person. Thanks for a great review.
Very well done presentation. Hopefully you'll get more sponsorships that'll allow you to dissect their craftsmanship. I'm certain that if I showed up to work with those on foot, absolutely nothing would be accomplished by me that day. I'd spend the time introducing co-workers to my primo foot wear.
It would have been nice to see the reconstructed shoes and compare them to the untouched shoes. You do some nice work. You inspired me to take my pair of Stuarts Gibsons into my local cobbler for a heel sock replacement.
Thank you for a great video to review and give your honest opinion on Yearn. In any minute from FedEx, I should receive my first pairs of Yearn's. I have a pair of Gaziano & Girling Oxfords and they will be the standard I will use against others.
My dad had three pair of Church shoes and I never saw him in any others except his garden and tennies. He had them polished, and HE polished them regularly and they were resoled a couple of times. This was in the 40'sa nd 50's and they were expensive then but well worth it.
Another amazing video Dan. There is something relaxing about watching your videos and very educational too. Amazing work and looking forward to the next one.
Learning so much here❣️ I can almost smell the cobbler shop smell, ha!! I’m surprised about the Chinese shoe, always assumed they were all the same! Thanks Dan for your expertise ✌🏼🥰
I liked this video. Very interesting to see how these high-end shoes are when they are brand new. Plus you did not destroy the shoes. I've seen other videos where the shoe is destroyed. You can fix everything done here and we still get to see how the shoe is made.
Dan online shopping will teach you to be very wary of ready-to-wear for things made in China. The probably is the consistency of their products. The rep will always send you the best of their stock, but as a consumer ordering on your own there are many variables. Another problem of shoes made in Asia is that they are very narrow. The sizing of their products is much smaller compared to ours. I've experienced this with Vans when they changed their factory. The same size fit so much tighter. I don't doubt that the owners of Yearn are trying to make a great shoe, but I am always wary of made in China.
Very interesting, thank you Dan. I’m a leatherworker hoping to try shoemaking at some point soon. I’ve been doing a lot of research over the past 18 months and know that a lot of Chinese shoemakers come to Europe to learn their craft, so it’s not surprising the shoes are so good. There are a lot of highly skilled craftspeople in China generally, the country doesn’t deserve its reputation for cheap tat. Obviously you get get cheap ‘fast fashion’ from there too, but that’s because they are the world’s manufacturer, they cater to all pockets. I’d love to see more videos like this, it’s great to see the work of skill craftspeople, wherever they are from. You could look at Japanese shoemakers too, they are doing some fabulous work.
Hello from Texas! Both are quite nicely constructed shoes and I would not hesitate to wear either, but the Yearn shoe is more angular than the John Lobb. I prefer the Lobb's only because they are a bit more flowing in shape that makes them seem more elegant. And I'm partial to the cap toe brogue style.
It's interesting that Yearn would buy German leather and sell the finished product back to Europe. I know that high quality Chinese piano makers also use German internal parts for their products.
I love these videos, informative and fun. Dan I did take a step back. You are the spitting image of my Nephew in Law. Only difference he's a bit of a whippet where you are a bit of a tank! Aside from that you look exactly like him LOL. All the best, great videos. :)
I just got a new pair of Samuel Windsor chelsea boots. They claim that the boots are handmade and goodyear welted. Do you have any thoughts on the Windsor brand? Because I don't think I ever saw them in any of your videos.
There are quite a few shoemakers who make shoes every bit as good as UK makers, it all comes down to labour costs, UK are ridiculously expensive because they have much higher labour costs, their shoes are not any better, I have shoes and boots by Cheaney Loake Crockett & Jones, I don't like Trickers weird sizing with that maker, I recently purchased two pairs of Berwick which are better than a few of the English made shoes.
Thanks Dan. Yet another great video. Loved the look of the shoe from China. They looked very comfortable and easy to polish. I bet the mirror shine on those shoes would come up a treat. Keep up the good work. Xx
Was lucky to find lobbs , Edward Green and Crocket and Jones ishoes and boots in charity shop years ago sadly not my size but they sold for alot of money.
The Chinese shoes look exactly like a Santoni model !!! I have many Santoni shoes with the same shape as the Chinese one as it's the one that's dits menthe best. I love Stefano Branchini.
I definitely prefer the styling of the John Lobbs. The patina on the Chinese made shoes looks backwards; darker toward the top, and lighter toward the welt.
I've noticed that China has started putting out good quality products. They are also proud of the quality and make of their products. China is certainly changing and evolving to fill what seems to be a lacking area of quality products at reasonable prices.
Hi Dan. I Liked this video a lot. Nice to see these comprehensive comparison videos. I would like to see a tutorial on how to put the color back into a two tone shoe like the Arterton where the colors blend into each other. Loved the funky socks btw. Cheers. : )
Hard to find English shoes for less than £1500 now, the Chinese civilisation was in silks whilst we were still in rough cloth, so you need to give some of these brands a go
Carmina made in Spain. MTO are around 500 euros depending of the kinda shoes you want. great website where you can design your own and the options are so wide it's actually nuts.
You mentioned that conditioning brand new shoes is a good thing to do, I never knew! I’ve just bought a pair of Oliver sweeney’s, what do you recommend doing to brand new shoes other than conditioning them? Thanks pal!
I don't think it's so much that different "factories" in China produce different standards of goods, it's more to do with what quality the carpet bagger/middle man trying to aim a product at the "West" has demanded. For EG... China make shite scopes for rifles, they also make superb top class glass too.. ~The same with air gun pellets, I'm sure it's true with other goods too. Hundreds of years ago, China were making ceramics that we just couldn't equal or even copy... they were making bone china blue and white plates, we made Delft... which was crude and pretty crap. They can do anything we can, and there are a billion of them and many of them have a very modest existence
I'm sure the ones in Chengdu making these shoes are probably living a better life then most of their chinise counterparts. They got orders out of the whazoo.
can you tell, what is the reasonable amount of money for a pair of shoes, for the everyday-Joes, that only wear them for the occasions that do ask for a more appropriate footwear?
What a great opportunity to have to do a review on expensive shoes like these. I don't think I've ever seen a pair of leather shoes made of one piece of leather. They're obviously nice shoes too. Please do more of these tear-down reviews.
Been binge watching these vids for a few days now while weighing up either doc marts 1481 or Solovair gibsons and waiting to see a resole of them and cleaning tips ie. can you put mink oil on top of polish or polish on top of mink oil. I'd like to see a vid on cleaning tips but also I'd like to see a maintenance vid on how some of your machince work like the stiching machine you have like how do you put new string on ect . keep up the great work.
Thanks for the Video! It's really great to see an expert evaluate those shoes, maybe I'll give it a try but they probably won't fit me (EU size 47.5) I think they might be good as first high quality shoes!

That was a very interesting video but gotta admit it was kind of hard to see perfect shoes in good condition being stripped down
I'd watch more teardowns. That was informative and entertaining. Any manufacturers reading, send this man shoes.
Thanks for sharing and having both Yearn and Lobb’s I can only agree! Made in China? Yes sir !!
That was excellent.Love my shoes and love shiniing them. Well done.
Love the patina done on them…that is beautiful! 😍
There's a lot of great craftsmen coming through from China/Korea etc. Some of the best leathercraft tools are coming from those regions also.
Another amazing video Dan. There is something relaxing about watching your videos and very educational too. Amazing work and looking forward to the next one.
Learning so much here❣️ I can almost smell the cobbler shop smell, ha!!
I’m surprised about the Chinese shoe,
always assumed they were all the same!
Thanks Dan for your expertise ✌🏼🥰
I find watching you're videos really relaxing for some reason .
I liked this video. Very interesting to see how these high-end shoes are when they are brand new. Plus you did not destroy the shoes. I've seen other videos where the shoe is destroyed. You can fix everything done here and we still get to see how the shoe is made.
Yeah I don't like it when they rip a perfectly good pair apart on the band saw. It's wasteful.
loving the Paul Smith Socks
I have the green and Blue glasses
Still will be trying to buy English made
Dan online shopping will teach you to be very wary of ready-to-wear for things made in China.
Dan, I remember you from Leighton Buzzard.
Great videos just spent all weekend watching them all !
And I'm partial to the cap toe brogue style.
they got different lasts at yearn
I think the shoes, quality-wise are very comparable. For me, the difference is the toe. The toe of the Yearn, has an odd slope to it.
This type of comparison video is very cool! Wow!
Great comparison. Please bring more. Thanks
I definitely prefer the styling of the John Lobbs. The patina on the Chinese made shoes looks backwards; darker toward the top, and lighter toward the welt.
This is a really cool video and really good to hear opinions from a pro.
I've noticed that China has started putting out good quality products. They are also proud of the quality and make of their products. China is certainly changing and evolving to fill what seems to be a lacking area of quality products at reasonable prices.
I don't even wear shoes. Dan for President.
Crazyville watching gorgeous perfect shoes being disassembled with the la la piano music in the background.🤯
DUDE !!! i was with you up until the skinny jeans!!!! LOL great vis as ever!
Love both the shoes Dan. I love brown shoes specifically, so they would both work
For me. Another great video!
Enjoyed this one!
Enjoyed the video. I bet your shop smells fantastic. BTW, please capitalize proper nouns re: your video description. Thanks, Dan!
Sometimes it isn't about quality or price. Sometimes I JUST want and prefer made in ENGLAND for the sake of it being made in England
The whole cut shoes are so elegant.
Hi Dan. I Liked this video a lot. Nice to see these comprehensive comparison videos. I would like to see a tutorial on how to put the color back into a two tone shoe like the Arterton where the colors blend into each other. Loved the funky socks btw. Cheers. : )
Hi Dan, great Video, following you for over a year just ordered a pair hope they are as good as you have shown. keep the content going.
@Markus VanRyan, How do you feel about the Yearn shoes you purchased? Comfort? Fit? Value?
Lob does also make hand welted and hand outsole stitched shoes with their bespoke line but those will cost even more
This kind of video is awesome. Way cool, interesting, and informative. Gg’s.
Another great video! I like these comparison videos.
Really enjoyed this episode! 👍 Good theme!
Hard to find English shoes for less than £1500 now,
the Chinese civilisation was in silks whilst we were still in rough cloth, so you need to give some of these brands a go
OK pay the ccp or pay a fair price for English shoes. Labour costs in the UK is higher as cost of living is higher.
Loake?
Carmina made in Spain. MTO are around 500 euros depending of the kinda shoes you want. great website where you can design your own and the options are so wide it's actually nuts.
Hard life ain’t it
You mentioned that conditioning brand new shoes is a good thing to do, I never knew!
I’ve just bought a pair of Oliver sweeney’s, what do you recommend doing to brand new shoes other than conditioning them?
Thanks pal!
Tbh most of the price difference is because of the labor cost difference between countries.
Informative and entertaining as always
Awesome video! You look like Richard Fairbrass
The Yearn is similar to the Crockett & Jones wholecut “Alex”👌🏼
hey @5:05 you pulled off your boots and while you were unlacing them i noticed it actually had a side zipper. why not just use the zipper ??
New to your channel, really impressed at your craft and presentational skills.....
can you tell, what is the reasonable amount of money for a pair of shoes, for the everyday-Joes, that only wear them for the occasions that do ask for a more appropriate footwear?
What a great opportunity to have to do a review on expensive shoes like these. I don't think I've ever seen a pair of leather shoes made of one piece of leather. They're obviously nice shoes too. Please do more of these tear-down reviews.
Cool video. I'd like to see the result of the repairing those.
Honestly, I could care less about shoes, but watching a master craftsman at work is fascinating.
Hi Dan, Would it be harder to resole a handstitched shoe compared to goodyear welted?
Enjoy your channel!!
Fantastic vids,...just great thank you
Love your content reminds me of the watch repair dudes making a 60 ,s rolex look like new 😂
great videos mate. u have great skills. just a question how do u keep a shoe from getting creases on the uppers
Thanks for the Video! It's really great to see an expert evaluate those shoes, maybe I'll give it a try but they probably won't fit me (EU size 47.5) I think they might be good as first high quality shoes!
I like the music beat at the start of the video, takes me back to the late 80s.
