Anyone who’s read “The Forty Dreams of St. John Bosco,” is familiar with his phrase, “I stayed up late writing.” Well, what did he write? Hardly anyone has heard of the prodigious amounts of wonderful literature penned by him. For instance, did you know that he wrote about Islam (or Mohammedanism as they called it back then)? In his 1853 work, “The Catholic Instructed in His Religion,” he teaches doctrine through telling the story of a father having conversation with his son about a variety of Catholic topics. We’ll now hear how he sums up Islam in this episode.
Saint John Bosco had no illusions regarding the evil of false religions and the immense damage they do. He knew that there was no reconciliation between error and truth and taught that to his boys with affection and charity. Thus, he showed the contrast between truly Catholic behavior and the ramblings of a charlatan.

I am a Catholic, but it makes me sad that the only arguements against Islam, are insults. You wont insult your way into conversion. You are just insulting Muhammad, speculating in the same way we can speculate against christianity. It's propaganda and not a real theological arguement
In school, they screened a movie about St. John Bosco. The movie was about Don Bosco reaching out to boys who led a life of street crimes and fights. In the end, they all change, leaving their wayward ways behind and following the saint. I passed out from Don Bosco High School, Bombay, India. The school's church is one of the most beautiful churches of our Lady in India.

Vijay, I too schooled at St Don Bosco, Bombay for a year (1960-61) as a boarder. The Rector at the time was a really saintly man - Fr. Hubert Rosario, who later became a bishop. The inside of the church is covered in coloured marble, imported from Italy and is really beautiful!
Hi Carl. Glad to hear from a Boscoite. I had passed out in 81. Yes I know that the Church stones and marble came from Italy. There are times when I sit in the Church and pray to Our Lady. If you recollect there's also a statue of our lady, on the left side of the Church's main door
I noticed black spots on our lady's face and the statue. I asked the father why they couldn't retouch the beautiful statue. The father explained that it involves a special gold leaf technique that was only available in Italy. I hope they can get hold of the painting technology someday. Anyways glad hearing from you Carl. I now live in the UK, but am in touch with Don Bosco's through the Don Bosco Madonna magazine which I receive monthly. I trust that you are well!

When I was in school, I wanted to know more about those religions and why they were so enticing… When I started reading the Quran, I was rather shocked… After some pages… All I could think of was this is either the rumblings of a mad man, inspired by “the enemy” or probably both… Closed, never looked back… It baffles me how so many good people could be so devout to something so preposterous after careful reading… But then I realized 3 forces keep people locked in: Fear of persecution and being ostracized by family/friends/society, malignant influence, just sheer weight of culture one is born/raised in… So sad…

I'd read it since I was a kid and seen nothing's special or good in it, other than it copied previous books and then made claim as a successor of the Jews/Christianity.

I was so mistreated by Nuns in a salesian school.. didn't want to have any contact with the catholic church for years.. it was a very traumatic experience. I then started to attend a evangelical church for years. Felt accepted, respected, valued..

@@ElCid48 I like that last part and hope it's true, rather than the typical view that once He comes "time's up, freeze in place, you, you, you, hell, right now" and there's no chance to even correct or see clearly, just brutality for the sake of it. This is similar to the Orthodox view that hell and heaven are just two sides of the same coin - God's pouring out His love and essence in your presence and that's either agony or bliss depending on how you view God. I wouldn't see how anyone could hate God that much, but maybe some do. I just think if people saw God, there'd be no question and their ego would be wiped away.

Have you heard the common joke in Italy that only Italians could have taken Christianity and turned it into the Roman Catholic Church? The license to (mis)interpret Scripture and the wild liturgical innovations of Rome were by-products of the Italian character (i.e., highly romantic, imaginative, and licentious). Good for art and architecture, but disastrous for a historical faith like Christianity which is founded on truth.

I wonder what was the state of these basic human rights you talk about in Christian Europe throughout the history not just the last 70 years or so.
I am shocked that my view of Islam is the same as St. John Bosco's view! I say this, because I am very much aware that a lot of people, yes including Catholics, Catholic priests and perhaps even the pope and other popes prior to the current one, believes that Islam is worshiping the same God as the Christian God, just in different ways.
How about the god of he jews, the god of moses? a complete different idea of what God is in Christs Being. Johevha and Moses are far worse than Moses and Jehoveha...

My point is that the GOD of the OT is very different from the God of the NT. to quote Matthew does not prove your point but perhaps it proves mine.
The God of the OT does not deal with individuals but rather with tribes. And indeed he is merciless. The God of the OT and moses are very much closer in comparison to that of Muhammad and Allah as with Moses and Jehovha as with the statutes and law given in Deuteronomey and the book of numbers...
My point being that the Christian concept of God is derived from what Plato defined as the absolute... the Transcendentals of Truth Beauty Justice Good... things that we humans can never fully grasp but through our reason can approach... it is why there is a Theology as opposed to what either the Islamic or Jewish clerics try to attert on God when they are limited to their claimed books of what is law...

What a holy book and what a God! A God who facilitated the procurement of women for his beloved prophet. A prophet from whom no one’s women, even that of his own son, were exempt.
A God and a religion that flipped one way and flapped another way on adoption laws so that their illustrious prophet could have one more filly to add to his collection.
A prophet so great that he got special dispensation to keep 12 wives while his followers were permitted only 4 at a time.

@@graceland395 You could have a look at approved Marian apparitions - St Carlo Acutis made a very nice collection of these. There are many apparitions that have happened around the world. I think that miracles generally come to bring or reinforce belief in Jesus Christ. However, if their frequency increases and add to that possible chastisements, and the scale of events that correlate with predictions from the end times, I think these may be a preparation. Having said that, I may be wrong, but this is what I'm led to think and I don't want to be like ladies without oil in their lamps. God's blessings on you and your family.

I watched many of these talks. What's fun about Don Bosco is the practical, matter of fact way he treats what some call mysticism....he lived in both worlds. He would mention that his mother, Margaret, came to help with some grocery choices and other things long after Margaret left for her Heavenly home. I chatted with an Irish nun at a funeral for a friend...a saintly Christian parishioner. She said she already had a list of chores for him to do. Now that's the communion of saints!

We also should not forget that protestants prefer Mohammedans than Catholics. It was a famous quote in the dutch independed war against Catholic Spain. ''Liever een turk dan een Paap.'' which means Rather a Turk than a Papist. Unlike you, even the Italians have enough self-awareness to understand the distance between Apostolic Christianity and Romanism. The license to (mis)interpret Scripture and the wild liturgical innovations of Rome were by-products of the Italian character (i.e., highly romantic, imaginative, and licentious). Good for art and architecture, but disastrous for a historical faith like Christianity which is founded on truth.
