- Mark Leibovich joins Tim Miller for the weekend pod.
Mike Johnson may have seen the light in the SCIF, but is he scheming with Trump for Jan 6, 2025? Plus, imagining Gavin Newsom 2028 if we get to keep our elections, Biden's age still makes every supporter nervous, Kevin McCarthy's vendetta, and Nikki, the wild card.

Looking old is better than being insane. Trump is 2 months older than I am, but he is batshit crazy.
Trump is also pretty good at looking old, and getting better at it every day.
Stay focused peeps. Do not vote by emotions. Vote for the Statesman, Joe Biden 🇺🇸 💙
If you dont use your capability to feel emotions, you will end up voting for trump. Emotions are needed to be a well rounded person.
💙💙💙
Trump is old too and he seems to be having cognitive issues more servere than Biden. I will vote for Biden because he is is not trying to destroy our democracy. He has had good policies that help the middle class and poor. Trump only cared and helped wealthy.
The problem Trump has is the age old one of liars. They have to remember what lies they told, and Trump as told so many, that he can't keep track of them anymore.
💙💙💙
Plus he's not stupid. Trump is observably stupid. It would help if trump wrote his speeches at rallies. But it's impossible to hear him ramble for too long. He thinks he's a freestyle guy
Not even close! Trump's dementia worsens by the day, practically.
I dont care if you mention Biden's age so long as you follow up with all of the things he has done for the country and the American people.
@vmaxwell alright, fair enough. Do you want the naughty or the nice list? Or would you prefer the entire kitchen sink? Help me help you 🤓✌⚖🍖
Great point!
America should learn to notbe blinded by shiny and screaming things/ people. Look for content, wisdom intelligence instead.
💙💙💙
😮@@sherrysandor-kelly57 let's go to your list first
What sane person would ever trust Kevin McCarthy again? He lost the speakership because he had proved himself untrustworthy, promising agreement then backing out. The man's a professional weasel!
👉 What sane person trusts ANY Republican? Period. Case closed.
Professional weasel is the best description for McCarthy. He acts as though no one pays attention to his ineptitude and spinelessness.
Mike Johnson is a very smart man and a behind the scenes manipulator up to January 6th. He is quiet and strategic. Beware of those quiet ones.
I find Tim's sudden falling for him head-over-heels to be quite disquieting.
He's a snake in the grass, for sure!
I agree. The bar is pretty low. He's creepy and heartless.
Yeah, hes hiding behind those Sunday school manners, but hes a raging election denier and full out theocrat. He is very dangerous.
Remember that scene in Moonstruck when Cher slaps Nicolas Cage across the face and says “Snap out of it”? That’s me slapping Tim back to reality for thinking Johnson is anything but self serving evil. He was involved in the damn insurrection and would love nothing more than to see this country fall to his Orange Gilead utopia. I get he did the right thing for Ukraine and believe me I am thankful, but getting lost in the sauce thinking he’s serious about being bipartisan for the good of America is insane.
Lets ask Liz Cheney what she thinks about Mike Johnson. I believe she has an opiniom.
I’m an Aussie but that’s my thought exactly. I don’t trust Johnson at all.
I don’t trust any Christian Nationalist, and certainly not one who is also an election denier with a soft spot for the insurrectionists.
👏👏👏👏
I have always liked Gavin Newsome. As a Midwesterner I find him refreshing. I know he does not appeal to everyone, but I have followed his career for a long time. Others I know think he is too California. At least people know who he is.
As a California voter, I agree👌
As a former San Francisco local, I mostly dislike him policy-wise. The gay marriage thing was awesome, and it was super fun to be in the city then. But for several years before that he (and Kamala Harris as DA) had been pursuing policies on criminal justice, homelessness, and gentrification that I found appalling. I consistently voted Green Party locally because they bought so heavily into the Clinton-era anti-little guy Democratic politics of the time. I know both Newsom and Harris have grown since then and realized the error of their ways on some of those issues, but I definitely struggle to get excited about either of them, other than Harris' various "firsts."
I love Gavin Newsom and I love Biden. So there.
❤
Has the Bulwark interviewed any physicians / neurologists who specialize in dementia? Because Trump compared to Biden seems to be a pretty good comparison between advancing dementia vs normal cognitive changes with aging.
I dunno if they could, think that maybe they aren't meant to comment/diagnosis someone they haven't examined themselves. Least I thought so in the past.
There's a controversy. The American Psychiatric Association follows the Goldwater rule since the 1960's / 1970s, which contends it is unethical to diagnose someone they have not personally examined with mental health diagnose. However, other psychiatric professionals counter that it is unethical not to provide a diagnosis when they see obvious signs of pathology that would identify the candidate as a danger to society. They liken it as on par with the duty to warn society if a psyciatric patient poses a threat to themselves or others, or if a physician suspects child abuse or domestic abuse. When the Goldwater rule was originally instituted, we did not have the 24 /7 news cycle with extensive coverage that might be a source of observation material, provided it isn't taken out of context and verified not to be a deep fake. I've seen interviews on other podcasts with renowned psychiatric professionals, including Dr. John Gartner and Dr. Bandy Lee.
“I remember when Reagan was shot.” 😱 omg…I remember when the first Kennedy was shot!
Me too! But we're not dead yet (and still voting blue!) 😂
@@lhoward9593here! here! Still upright💙
Oh, me too. We're still voting blue, too. All my life.
Thank you for your service…? I hope you haven’t given up on us younger generations. We’re just rowdy and young and stupid
ditto
Thank God we have a wise person as President of the US. Get a grip. From an International listener.
You do not, under any circumstances, have to hand it to Lauren Boebert.
Besides, shes quick to grab it herself....
Tim, I've listened to 13 political books all about Trump. I would recommend Trump Tapes by the great Bob Woodward. It's all him interviewing Trump. It's him and Trump talking. It's crazy how ignorant he is. I would recommend you listen, not read. It's fascinating, and is scary as hell.
Newsom is awesome!
In June, there’s a special election for the seat Kevin McCarthy abandoned (Baskerville,CA). So yeah, i hope it flips blue. 🗳️💙
BAKERSFIELD
@@kristykanen9315 Yes! I blame spellcheck !😅
Not likely in Bakersfield.
California has a "jungle primary" where the top two vote getters in the primary advance regardless of party. The primary already happened in March and the top 2 are both Republican. So, sadly, it is already sure to stay GOP.
Watched a profile of the redistricted Bakersfield district, the Kev was a little left wing for the new district, and the democratic candidates are unserious. Kinda written off. Even though the dems serve the community better than the Republicans.
Mike Johnson gets a couple of points for the Ukraine aid. But only a couple. His ease of turnaround is pretty suspicious.
Get over the age issue!!! The man has EXPERIENCE!!! 💙💙💙
If Biden hadn't run, Give me 2 Dems who could fill his shoes.
Tim said "Sacramento is underrated" and Mark said "I completely agree" while shaking his head side to side.😉
I am soon leaving California to go care for my elderly mother. As far as more people moving out of California than in, I am all for it. There are too many people here already. As far as those who are leaving in protest to California politics, I say, don't let the door hit ya on the way out.
when Mark said newsom was "somewhat sincere" I immediately thought of these lyrics from Joni Mitchell; "send me somebody
Who's strong and somewhat sincere"
Why is Mike Johnson discussing anything with Donald Trump he's not the president at this point he is a defendant in a number of cases Trump should have no say in our government and if Mike Johnson really wants to show us anything tell him to put the border bill back on the floor and take a vote on it if it passes I will believe that maybe he does have a small amount of conscience the way Trump loves Putin there is no way that he would want money going to the Ukraine to protect against Putin
Gavin is so ready.
We are ready for him also.
Tim, thanks for your podcasts and your interviews are exceptional and so interesting! I am a staunch Democrat, but not to the detriment of not hearing from the Republicans and their views on different topics...we do need better gun control and protecting the schools so the children are able to learn instead of being so traumatized by people around them being murdered! We must do better in our nation and protecting the teachers and children must come first!
I'm from St. Petersburg Luna is crazy
Yes, he is old but seriously??? Compared to a complete monster I will take him and we need all the positives we can get now. If we had some good talent and a better process including non million and billionaires we would do better. All these elite rich folks are out of touch period. The middle class has been abandoned.
Radical Moderates unite !
Have a great weekend Tim and Mark. Always enjoy listening to you both. 👍🇺🇸
If more conservative politicians were like the Bulwark crew I'd probably vote conservative. But the performative cruelty and culture wars turn me off completely.
Mark,, I followed you on Twitter. Hope you finally realized TRUMP made the deal to LEAVE Afghanistan 🙄.
Thanks Tim😊
Love you guys. And Tip O'Neil would NEVER have kissed Regan on the forehead.
Thank you, Mr. Miller & Mr. Leibovich 🕊
There are people who have a lot of ability and little need. For them capitalism is ideal. There are those, such as the mentally disabled, who have little ability and much need. They need a social safety net. They are some of the finest people I know. It would be an atrocity to forsake them.
Leibovich missed one of the biggest groups at the GWU encampment - Jewish Voices for Peace.
It's a Catholic/Irish thing. A kiss on the head is a blessing
Or more appropriately an Italian thing.
Still an inappropriate thing to do to the president if you're not close friends or family.
@@kathrynarnold4545 Ah yes, the famously classic Italian name of O'Neill
ICYMI (as I did): BIDEN, OBAMA & CLINTON were ALL TOGETHER on the 'SMARTLESS' podcast recently. Didn't get much attention, so thought I'd share.
Haley is staying out because she is thinking about 2028 and not endorsing Trump or even saying she will vote for him will help her 4 years from now.
I hadn't thought of McCarthy for VP, but it makes sense. The primary qualification, from Trump's perspective, has got to be someone who will never, ever, ever get 67 votes in the Senate, no matter what Trump does to get himself impeached yet again.
Source of Tip O’Neil kiss on the head of President Reagan story: Chris Matthew’s 9/30/2013 article for NBC News. Article title: When the president and the speaker were a team. The speaker also knelt bedside and prayed with the president.
Good job, Mr Miller, staying you.
Also. I really like Tim's interviews. So informative.
👉 I know exactly what Trump needs & so does every non-MAGA in the entire world!
I agree 100% Even if it's just a feint, saying and doing the right thing deserves to be recognised, as much as saying and doing the wrong thing deserves to be critiqued. Thank you Mike Johnson (née MAGA Mike) for saying that people who disagree with you on policy aren't evil and enemies of the people.
Time will tell if you're able to keep it up...or, dare I say, maybe even do more
Wow, this was such a great conversation! I feel stupid...but I felt so engaged.
Mike Johnson made a reference to his son entering the Naval Academy this coming fall. I think he is concerned about real harm coming to his son should Congress fail to fund the military while his son is in harms way.
Excellent conversation, thanks for this! 😊
Great episode. Oh to be a fly on the wall and get all the tea you two must have!
Cassidy Hutchinson's book is a great read. A friend loaned it to me late last year and I just got around to reading it about a month ago and couldn't put it down.
Republicans that can’t vote for Biden (Democrat’s) should write in Niki Haley. Then there may be a party for conservatives.
Great content. Thank you, Tim.
My god, Netanyahu was a huge supporter of Hamas for years!🤦♂️
Wow, Tim I was sure you were a lot smarter than to not see that Mike Johnson is scheming
Great interview!
Lil Mikey, enjoyed his first dinner at the grown up table. He dose not want to go back to the kids table.
Bravo, great show.
Fantastic episode
I don't think Mike Johnson should be trusted at all!
I thought Mark made good points and Tim , 59:25 your response to that was great. I can't put my finger on it; but Johnson comes back from a trump meeting and then helps the Democrats with the Aid for Ukraine??? And what makes it more suspicious trump didn't bitch, whine, and complain??? Something doesn't smell right.
Thank you both very much
💙💙👍👍💙💙
As Mark said, Trump may have backed down on passage of the aid to Ukraine and gave Johnson permission to vote yes, not wanting to alienate voters during an election cycle.
Maybe… if Putin finds out this was the case, he won’t be happy with his asset. MAGA = Moscow Assets Grifting America
The inability to see Israel as a bad actor is astounding.
The inability to see Palestinian support of Hamas as problematic is equally astounding
I know!!! Tims cognitive dissonance is appalling and kind of embarassing. It really shows up how they justified their GOP love for so long.
It's not that simple.
@Reldas Israel is not a bad actor. The Netanyahu administration is a bad actor. The people are not the government.
Too bad being in the SCIF did nothing for Marge.
Was she there?
I am not sure whether there are different skiffs?
It’s not about the people getting fed propaganda. It’s about the leaders sitting in their ivory towers watching the people die for the ivory towers to prosper.
MTG got to go into the SCIF and took notes out with her. And she told anyone that would listen, it seems like an issue considering it's ILLEGAL.
Tim.... You have done it again! This type of interview is so interesting and intellectually entertaining. I really enjoy when your personality spills out onto the desk. You have the talent and the knack. Mucho thanquitos!!
Love this guest!
Enjoyed this!
Let Mark be Mark!
I LOVE LEIBOVICH!
Me, too! It's my first exposure to this guy. Impressed.
2 of my favorite guys. I get really tired of the California hate. Stop taking our money then. What would be the economy without us. Lower taxes aren’t the end all beat all.
Great conversation! More like this with this guy :)
Nuts to touch a jellyfish on purpose!
The ASME award casualty on his bookcase is a low key flex I’m into.
Mike is scared for his son joining the naval academy. He says he dont want soilders have to be in a ground battle in Ukraine
Trivia note about Presidential spouses; In1860 Mary Todd Lincoln had dated Honest Abe and Northern Democratic candidate Stephen Douglas AND Southern Democratic candidate John Breckinridge. She only married Lincoln though.
My hero’s
God spoke to Mike Johnson through a glory hole. Hallelujah!!
The REAL Celtic effectively won the championship today.😠😡🤬 I'm a fan of the losers unfortunately. Great work as always.💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙
Great episode!
Tim! Thanks for your guest today. My intro to Mr. Leibovich and very pleased. I just love your pod. I don't miss an episode while cruising through my daily walk. You are an excellent host. I won't tell Sarah or JVL...no hurt feelings, lol.🤭
Mark loves California WOOT!
And Northern CA loves ya right back Dude
Tim, you are forever a CA Boy Emeritus- though you temporarily wander elsewhere, we will always welcome you home when you're ready.❤
Thank you very much for this.
Best Reince memory…watching him standing in the rain after being literally abandoned by trump post event in Long Island. I could only imagine dozens of women dumped out of the limo over the years…OUTTA the car!
Prevagen is one of the most infuriating of scams there is, and somehow nobody has been able to shut it down. Mark, you should take a shot at it.
Great conversation…things I have never considered. But I do like Newson. I like Joe Biden is still a rational man and got way more done for the people than Trump did. We need a wise man not the crazy old orange man.
The Atlantic and The Bulwark are two of my 'hell no, I'm not dropping this' subscriptions.
My Kevin as Veep. As if anyone in the House respects him. He couldn't even keep them bought.
Johnson was put in because he didn't have any enemies and they needed to fill the spot.
It would so nice to have mature governance. Mike Johnson literally had a “come to Jesus” moment. As it was said the Founders wanted rooms of vigorous debate with the goal of consensus.
Great insights -- smart commentary.
As great an interview as this was, it’s an honest shame that Tim’s “sour grapes” joke was missed. That was gold right there.
Hey Tim, a bit of advocacy advice: it's easier to bring people around to a point of view with a positive message than a negative one. I know choosing engagement in favor of confrontation isn't in most Republican's DNA but lately neither is winning anything civilly
Inflation declining
Wages increasing
GPA growing
Unemployed deceasing
Needed cut in interest rates
I think that you should discuss the Wisconsin connection. Ryan, Priebus, Spicer, et al.
Don't forget Matt's Red-bull with special food additives.
Newsom is penalized for his look
Good show!
So, Tim, are you against free food or a free Palestine? I get confused because sometimes you seem like are and other times you seem like aren't. We can walk and chew gum at the same time meaning that we can despise Hamas and support the Palestinian people just like we can despise the Israeli government, especially bibi ... and support the Jewish people. It's a both, and. Good pods and liking the diversity of folks ... Medhi and Fareed please
Every now and then Tim says something I think is nuts. Liking Ronald Reagan and suggesting Mike "Moses" Johnson is a responsible conservative leader are a couple of them.
Tim lighten up on Gavin
Tim, I'm really disappointed in your lack of support for the student protesters. The majority are peaceful gatherings of bright and informed students recognizing how complicit we, as Americans, are in the Gaza genocide and famine.
And FFS how many times do they have to say they condemn Hamas?
You need to check out Rashida Tlaib's district in Dearborn. The protestors are saying "Death to America". This is the problem, we have bad actors protesting.
How did he not know that jellyfish stung---and that it REALLY hurts?
Not THAT many people are leaving California and there are many that are moving there. There's been recent press on this.
You can say what you want about California's flaws but the US would not be largest economy in the world without California. They must be doing something right.
And no, Hollywood isn't the biggest economic producer for California. It's agriculture. Just sayin...
Fellows: Didn't Hamas renege on that death to Israel stand A LONG TIME AGO and Hamas was the governing body of Gaza after Israel seemed to purposely make Abbas impotent in governing with constant humiliation and victimization of Gazans. I'd really appreciate your clarification on this because so far, your discussion has been pretty oblique !!!
More Leibo!!
Texas Paul's live podcast today broke down your topic perfectly. Only he and his facts proved that Russia bots have taken it one step further. Russian bots are influencing both sides of the Israel/Palistine issue. Putin is influencing populations around the globe with this issue.
