- Trump has embraced the culture war on guns and abortion, but he is somehow being painted as a moderate again. Meanwhile, Giuliani and Abbott served up fresh reminders that MAGA thinks law and order doesn't apply to them. And today's authoritarians aren't anti-elite-it's just that the wrong elites are in charge. Tom Nichols joins Tim Miller.

Why is Steve Bannon not in jail yet
The same reason Trump and many other rich and/or powerful schmucks aren't - the two-tiered (at least) Justice system.
He was tried by a judge that was appointed by republicans, so I’m with you- the appeal failed. Throw him in jail with Roger Stone! 50:21 50:23
He was pardoned by Trump as he left office.
@@riotintheairTrump couldn’t pardon him for charges he hasn’t faced yet. You can’t preemptively pardon someone I don’t think.
@@riotintheairTrump pardoned him for other crimes. He’s slated for a 4 month stint for his refusing to testify. He was able to stay out on appeal. Stones similar request was denied.
One guy is running for president The other guys running to be a dictator. Is there a difficulty in this choice somewhere?😊
I've heard them interviewed that they want him as dictator.
@@lindaflesch7303
So unbelievable, but true. There are people who need someone to tell them how to live their lives, so they will not be responsible for anything that happens.
@@lindaflesch7303
If certain United States citizens don’t want democracy or freedom then they should move to Russia or North Korea! We are a free country. We need to fight back against anyone doing away with the Constitution as trump has promised!!!!
How did these people get so fricken stupid?!!
Vote💙💙💙💙🕎
Nah, the dictator thing is just a bonus for him.... he is running to avoid jail.
Rudy took down the Italian Mob so the Russian mob could move in.
His family was the mob and he was involved with them. His uncles.
@@jessicacooper2705 His dad and his uncle were both affiliated - he has always been open about that. The part about putting the leadership of OC in prison - was his ticket to stardom and rise to mayor. The story that was never told about it was - he was effectively clearing the field of the Italian OC - only to give way for the Russian OC who had better rackets - because that is the reality of it - Trump was in on it also. That was the most profitable decision Trump ever made
Crockett has to stand up to Greene because Republican leadership refuses to censure her.
Yay!
Tom Nichols, "The mistake people make is trying to treat what Trump says as policy positions, he's a goldfish chasing food pellets".
What a fabulous line!
Trump may have only vague ideas about policy, but they are still rotten ideas. And he knows exactly who he hates and who he wants to destroy.
Trump may have only vague ideas about policy, but they are still rotten vague ideas.
They are policy positions, Trump is telling us what he wants to do and we should take him seriously. Tom is way too unconcerned about Trump.
I don’t think that’s even a mistake , it’s an intentional decision because anyone who characterizes trumps wishlist as “policy positions” are really burying what those positions are behind boring rhetoric
Maybe J.D. Vance SHOULD learn EVERYTHING possible about Victor Orbán BEFORE emulating ANYTHING he does.
Don't think for a minute that he hasn't. He knows exactly what Viktor Orban is. He also knows that if he gets to be Trump's Veep and they're elected, he might get to be the very same thing within the next four years, if the Lord hastens the succession.
Despicable thought, in any case.
That would require more work than these idiots are willing to put in.
Tim Miller, thank you. Please don’t stop, we need your perspective and commentary. Trump must be stopped. This isn’t about right or left - it’s about the country we want to live in - it’s worth the argumentative fight to protect. Our country seems to be going through a correction (like Wall Street) in values. Your podcast is always interesting and thought compelling. Keep it up!
I love hearing about Tom's essay on the "Cat Who Saved Me." I'm 70, divorced in my mid-40s, broke up with a boyfriend after a long relationship in 2015. At 60, I decided to start a pet sitting business. I also had 2 cats and a dog. My animals all saved me. They taught me how to be a better person; to be at peace with myself. Animals are amazing, aren't they? I truly believe they're gifts from God.
Mark Twain said, "The more I learn about people, the more I like my dog."

Always loved the wise sayings of Samuel Clemens !
They are absolutely wonderful. I just lost my best friend - my 16 yr old basset hound - and the better part of me died with him.
And without a shred of shame, dump will make fun of old Biden for using a teleprompter. And the cult will cheer, as he reads that comment off of one.
Age does NOT equate to old in many people, and I am personally insulted by your ignorant assumption. You could never go one- on-one with a Biden !
It’s called alcoholism, Rudy is a rich drunk , soon to be a poor drunk
Actually Tim, as a native Texan, there was a Cruz cult of the right-wing loons, but they switched to the MAGA cult
I've run into them in Indiana. It was a church group too in Bloomington. They see him as a messiah.
Rudy has always been a horrible person. Bloomberg quietly pit together the city while Rudy was in the spotlight. He publicly humiliated his wife...and let's look at what he did to his PA
But to be a real cult of personality there has to be personality. Cruz has a bad one but DeSantis doesn’t have one and Ramaswamy just tries on other people’s.
Hitler had the brown shirts, Trump has the red ties.
Member of an early Nazi paramilitary organization, the Sturmabteilung or SA (‘assault division’). The Brownshirts, recruited from various rough elements of society, were founded by Adolf Hitler in Munich in 1921. Fitted out in brown uniforms reminiscent of Mussolini's Blackshirts, they figured prominently in organized marches and rallies. Their violent intimidation of political opponents and of Jews played a key role in Hitler's rise to power. From 1931 the SA was led by a radical anti-capitalist, Ernst Röhm. By 1933 it numbered some two million, double the size of the army, which was hostile to them. Röhm's ambition was that the SA should achieve parity with the army and the Nazi Party, and serve as the vehicle for a Nazi revolution in state and society. For Hitler the main consideration was to ensure the loyalty to his regime of the German establishment, and in particular of the German officer corps. Consequently, he had more than 70 members of the SA, including Röhm, summarily executed by the SS in the ‘Night of the Long Knives’, after which the revolutionary period of Nazism may be said to have ended.
The proud boys were eerily similar to the SA. Rohm was powerful and presented a potential threat to Hitler and he had Himmler and the SS whispering in Hitler's ear about what a potential Threat to Hitler Rohm could be if he was not reigned in. The ironic part is that in no time the SS had replaced the SA in size and surpassed it in power. Those type of palace intrigue is typical of fascist leadership, the coterie of criminals, thugs, and grifters that are attracted to the leader do whatever they can to usurp their peers for favored access to the leader. You are seeing it now with the red tie brigade
I think you mean Trump has the “red hats”, not “red ties”. Thankfully they’re proud of wearing their cult uniform which makes them easy to identify.
He learned a lot from the mob.
And Roy Cohn
Hopefully how to go to jail 😒
I am a registered Democrat but lean middle. One reason I listen to this podcast is because I like your conservative views. Thank you
Same here! Lifelong Democrat, but center-left (more center than left these days!), but I love The Bulwark content.
Giuliani has just become grotesque.
I challenge the word "just". He has been grotesque the day he popped out.
I’m sure that is what all 3 of the former Mrs Rudys think. Then there was that creepy Borat moment. 🤢
He froze. It was cognitive decline. That was not intentional.
Trump absolutely did a Mitch Freeze; but the crowd interpreted it as a profound meditative, beautiful moment! You know, like when in court his eyes closed in “prayer”!
I’ve seen some people post that Trump has been pausing at his rallies lately when the qanon music starts. I don’t know if it’s true or if they are just covering for him. The video I saw it didn’t look smooth. He seemed confused and frustrated.
@lisanunlist9510 You mean his "beautiful blue eyes," right? 😊
Can we please have Tom on more often? Love his insight, wit and wisdom. Making him a regular contributor would be a beautiful thing. Signed, a Bulwark+ subscriber.

Thank you, Tom Nichols, on Joe Biden. You nailed it. I have such respect for Biden and I am beyond honored to vote for him.
I also felt like I was starting life over at 43. I was also suffering from depression. I had never had a cat in my life. The woman I started seeing had some strays living behind her house. 1 had kittens and shortly thereafter abandoned them. Suddenly I'm a 43 year old guy, very depressed and I'm bottle feeding 5 kittens! Today, almost 3 years later those cats are grown and still living with me, and I think they saved my life! When I heard Tom's story I couldn't believe it, and I can't wait to read the book. Thanks Tom.
Cats are so fun and entertaining. Glad they found you…I’ve been there.
Thanks for sharing your sweet story. 🥹
Anybody who is prone to depression at all can’t help but get pulled downward into the quicksand of this today’s political nonsense. I have also suffered from depression. Mine was because of severe abuse, and I had a lot of stuff I had to work out before I could even begin to come away from the depression, but I live alone now and I still have those thoughts, but I have my cat and I love my cat and when he is near me and when I can just look at him and see his sweet, intelligent face it warms my heart, and it makes me feel like I’m not alone. I wish you the very best always.
Very good point on covering Trump. Show his whole rant to give context or ignore it. He lives and takes advantage of snippets. When you show the whole thing it's lunatic nonsense.
Yes. With DT, it's not merely any one utterance but his incoherence--his complete inability to recognize a topic and stay on it for more than 2 seconds before skipping away off to something totally unrelated or even contradictory. It's the goldfish chasing food pellets.

Great show you guys. I read a headline earlier today from AP that really depressed me. If it’s possible for me to get any more depressed. It said “Half the country is against deportation camps”. I would’ve thought that percentage would’ve been much higher. I’m not a naive person, I’ve always known there were shit people everywhere in the world. But man, in the last decade, especially since 2021 after the Capital attack - I’m starting to wonder if they now outnumber the rational part of the population. I just don’t get it. I loved my country along with all its flaws and all its history, we’ve had so many great accomplishments and had some not great moments.. but I still loved it and was thankful to be born where I could be anything I wanted if I worked at it. Now, I’m just sad & ashamed because I had no idea how many people were so hateful. 😔
I'm 74 and I just learned how terrible our government is
When are we going to start discussing the "Electoral College"???? Who are these people??? What do they do??? Why is this institution necessary??? What is the difference between "POPULAR VOTE and ELECTORAL COLLEGE????? How did drumph wind up POTUS when he did NOT have the POPULAR VOTE in 2016. Did the ELECTORAL COLLEGE have something to do with that????
Does my VOTE even count or matter at all?????
Just vote blue, until the electoral college is gone.
Change the constitution.
when the country was formed the small states would only join in if they had more power .. so they created a system to placate their need .. and we are still mortgaged to the past ...
We don't usually discuss the Electoral College because it's somewhat common knowledge. It's critical to how the presidential election works, and I completely agree with you that it's outdated and has been for 100 years. Check out the links for more information.
Electoral College: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electoral_college
NPVIC: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Popular_Vote_Interstate_Compact
Now it comes down to handful of swing states that decide the elections. Mostly in the south or Midwest and why? Half the time these states combined don’t even have the population of California or New York. I don’t think small states shouldn’t have a voice but honestly if I lived in a state with 33 million people and one of the most diverse populations I’d be pissed that my vote counts less than some swing state. A swing state that’s less diverse, probably mostly right wing, Christian conservative and if you’re in the Midwest probably mostly white. What kind of representation is that when we live in a more diverse country, the electoral college is outdated.
I love to hear from Tom Nichols. Way back in the day he was my favorite Twitter follow.

Watching the Bulwark podcasts has really opened my eyes about former conservatives. Apparently at least some of them really, honestly didn't know that it's always been like this. I had always assumed that smart Republicans were all in on the "joke" of "law and order", that they all knew they had to code legal abuses in a more palatable way so they could continue doing them.
Like, how did you learn about Nixon _(and every conservative since)_ being a "law and order" candidate and think "law and order" was anything but gilding on the BS they were spewing? Did you not see the differing reactions to the Occupy protests and the Tea Party protests? Or the civil rights protests and the segregationist protests? Or every neo-Nazi march being protected by the police and students constantly assaulted by them? Honestly, when was the last time you saw a student protest protected by the police or a racist/alt-right/Nazi protest broken up by authorities? _(That's not to say Democrats never misuse the police, but compare the different reactions in Texas and Vermont, for example)._
So Tim, here's your takeaway: the phrase "law and order" means "get them _(likely black)_ liberals." That's what it's always meant. As usual, I enjoy your frequent dawning realizations of what the right is like.
So, why was a Hell's Angel brought to the courtroom today, and who invited him? You don't have to be a genius to figure out a message was being sent.

This is always who Rudy was. Black folks have known all along. You are just now seeing it.
Also to this Nichols guy (your guest), in terms of who he would vote for, I heard a lot of "I" in his opinions. This is my most difficult to grasp concept with conservative leaning people: not thinking about others but only about THEMSELVES and how THEY feel when it comes to issues about the general good. Voting is not about you; it is about US, i.e. what is best for ALL people. For example, if the ideas of abortion make YOU uncomfortable, this issue is not about YOU. So please take into consideration what is best for the country as a whole.
Hm. What I heard was a thoughtful witty guy, asked for his opinions ("I" isn't too out of place), thinking about the broader good.
