  • Trump has embraced the culture war on guns and abortion, but he is somehow being painted as a moderate again. Meanwhile, Giuliani and Abbott served up fresh reminders that MAGA thinks law and order doesn't apply to them. And today's authoritarians aren't anti-elite-it's just that the wrong elites are in charge. Tom Nichols joins Tim Miller.

I love hearing about Tom's essay on the "Cat Who Saved Me." I'm 70, divorced in my mid-40s, broke up with a boyfriend after a long relationship in 2015. At 60, I decided to start a pet sitting business. I also had 2 cats and a dog. My animals all saved me. They taught me how to be a better person; to be at peace with myself. Animals are amazing, aren't they? I truly believe they're gifts from God.

Hitler had the brown shirts, Trump has the red ties.
Member of an early Nazi paramilitary organization, the Sturmabteilung or SA (‘assault division’). The Brownshirts, recruited from various rough elements of society, were founded by Adolf Hitler in Munich in 1921. Fitted out in brown uniforms reminiscent of Mussolini's Blackshirts, they figured prominently in organized marches and rallies. Their violent intimidation of political opponents and of Jews played a key role in Hitler's rise to power. From 1931 the SA was led by a radical anti-capitalist, Ernst Röhm. By 1933 it numbered some two million, double the size of the army, which was hostile to them. Röhm's ambition was that the SA should achieve parity with the army and the Nazi Party, and serve as the vehicle for a Nazi revolution in state and society. For Hitler the main consideration was to ensure the loyalty to his regime of the German establishment, and in particular of the German officer corps. Consequently, he had more than 70 members of the SA, including Röhm, summarily executed by the SS in the ‘Night of the Long Knives’, after which the revolutionary period of Nazism may be said to have ended.

    • @pjpredhomme7699
      @pjpredhomme7699 25 днів тому +4

The proud boys were eerily similar to the SA. Rohm was powerful and presented a potential threat to Hitler and he had Himmler and the SS whispering in Hitler's ear about what a potential Threat to Hitler Rohm could be if he was not reigned in. The ironic part is that in no time the SS had replaced the SA in size and surpassed it in power. Those type of palace intrigue is typical of fascist leadership, the coterie of criminals, thugs, and grifters that are attracted to the leader do whatever they can to usurp their peers for favored access to the leader. You are seeing it now with the red tie brigade

Great show you guys. I read a headline earlier today from AP that really depressed me. If it’s possible for me to get any more depressed. It said “Half the country is against deportation camps”. I would’ve thought that percentage would’ve been much higher. I’m not a naive person, I’ve always known there were shit people everywhere in the world. But man, in the last decade, especially since 2021 after the Capital attack - I’m starting to wonder if they now outnumber the rational part of the population. I just don’t get it. I loved my country along with all its flaws and all its history, we’ve had so many great accomplishments and had some not great moments.. but I still loved it and was thankful to be born where I could be anything I wanted if I worked at it. Now, I’m just sad & ashamed because I had no idea how many people were so hateful. 😔

What is the difference between "POPULAR VOTE and ELECTORAL COLLEGE????? How did drumph wind up POTUS when he did NOT have the POPULAR VOTE in 2016. We don't usually discuss the Electoral College because it's somewhat common knowledge. It's critical to how the presidential election works, and I completely agree with you that it's outdated and has been for 100 years. Check out the links for more information.

Now it comes down to handful of swing states that decide the elections. Mostly in the south or Midwest and why? Half the time these states combined don’t even have the population of California or New York. I don’t think small states shouldn’t have a voice but honestly if I lived in a state with 33 million people and one of the most diverse populations I’d be pissed that my vote counts less than some swing state. A swing state that’s less diverse, probably mostly right wing, Christian conservative and if you’re in the Midwest probably mostly white. What kind of representation is that when we live in a more diverse country, the electoral college is outdated.

11:40 "The mindset is the same..."
Watching the Bulwark podcasts has really opened my eyes about former conservatives. Apparently at least some of them really, honestly didn't know that it's always been like this. I had always assumed that smart Republicans were all in on the "joke" of "law and order", that they all knew they had to code legal abuses in a more palatable way so they could continue doing them.
Like, how did you learn about Nixon _(and every conservative since)_ being a "law and order" candidate and think "law and order" was anything but gilding on the BS they were spewing? Did you not see the differing reactions to the Occupy protests and the Tea Party protests? Or the civil rights protests and the segregationist protests? Or every neo-Nazi march being protected by the police and students constantly assaulted by them? Honestly, when was the last time you saw a student protest protected by the police or a racist/alt-right/Nazi protest broken up by authorities? _(That's not to say Democrats never misuse the police, but compare the different reactions in Texas and Vermont, for example)._
So Tim, here's your takeaway: the phrase "law and order" means "get them _(likely black)_ liberals." That's what it's always meant. As usual, I enjoy your frequent dawning realizations of what the right is like.

    Serious Inquiry -
I love all the Bulwark podcasts, The Lincoln Project, Resolute Square, Fast Politics, The Breakdown, Protect Democracy, RVAT, etc. [plus Randy Rainbow!] and believe that your work makes the Democratic party, and the average voter, smarter. I value you guys and your mission-driven work more than just about anything except my family.
However, because I am a worrywart, I am concerned about your/our future. If (God willing) Joe Biden is re-elected in November or (God willing) DJT takes that final bite of the hamburger from hell, will we still have you and your cohorts to help us stay sane?
You are in a prime position to help re-constitute a decent Republican party, and there will still be a bunch of MAGA Republicans to defeat in future elections. I fervently hope that you have a plan/plot to continue with your advocacy of saving liberal democracy for upcoming generations. Thank you.

This is always who Rudy was. Black folks have known all along. You are just now seeing it.
Also to this Nichols guy (your guest), in terms of who he would vote for, I heard a lot of "I" in his opinions. This is my most difficult to grasp concept with conservative leaning people: not thinking about others but only about THEMSELVES and how THEY feel when it comes to issues about the general good. Voting is not about you; it is about US, i.e. what is best for ALL people. For example, if the ideas of abortion make YOU uncomfortable, this issue is not about YOU. So please take into consideration what is best for the country as a whole.

Listened to this podcast on the radio as I was driving to a destination. It is always a MUST LISTEN whenever Tom Nichols is on the podcast. Absolutely love listening to this incredibly intelligent, exceptionally well read, highly articulate, and humorously witty man. Who else can say on the fly, “Trump just sucks the blood marrow out of people as a loyalty demand. He leaves behind these sad husks of people” and “Trump is a gold fish who chases food pellets.” Brilliant stuff, Tom. One thing I missed from Tom is his usual, “We are not a serious country!” I always quote Tom whenever I see clips of a Trump rally. Trump’s followers don’t care about good governance. All they want is to be entertained. It’s like the Russell Crowe character shouting to the Colosseum crowd after killing a gladiator, “Are you not entertained?” That is what MAGA wants … ENTERTAINMENT, and that is the carcasses of progressives, “Fake News” journalists, gays, transgenders, Democrats, undocumented migrants, BLM activists, Muslims, Ivy League college students, Hollywood “elites,” etc scattered across the American landscape being picked apart by black crows. That is MAGA entertainment. You guys must listen all the way to the end of this podcast when Tom shares his personal story about the challenges he faced in his 40’s. Very moving and enlightening stuff. Thanks, Tom. Thanks, Tim and the Bukwark, for such great content. 💙👊👊
