  • Code Vein is NOT a Soulsborne clone. And if it is, trust me, it's MUCH more than that. Here I share my thoughts on the game and my current obsession with it.

I just started this game 3 days ago and i'm stuck on the Cathedral right where you were when you recorded this...lol. I love the fact that every place you visit has different monsters and the environments are completely different. And yes, this game is brutally hard at times. Sometimes I feel like I just got lucky beating the bosses. This current mid-level boss is really hard and you have to fight through some really hard stuff everytime just to get to them. I am kind of stuck though on this boss, but i'm not ready to give up yet.

my favorite game of 2019. i love how if forced me to evolve my techniques and strategies more than dark souls ever did. I've never had to block in a souls game but this game made me learn. that was part of the whole excitement.

That was a negative for me. I dont like it when a play style is deemed obsolete for a certain type of boss encounter. Being forced to block for a whole 2 minutes was awful. Thats the same reason why I disliked Sekiro...only one way to play, learn to parry or die.

I love the Soulsborne series, and also really enjoyed Code Vein. The assertion that Soulsborne fans won’t like Code Vein is flawed, as it assumes we will demand a replica of the series and the vast majority of us do not.

you know what make me obsessed with the game. Its skill inheritance and class customization experimentation and the thrill when you got new skill to try on for your ultimate set. my personal opinion tho i agree with the story while its good they need bit of upgrade on kinda cheesy part. Oliver collin death set my bar very high and i kinda disappointed they not try to kill your party member ever again lastly there is not enough loot equipment which is 100% subjective lol. i have tendency to wander off to the wrong place just because i love to explore and hoping to find something interesting on my trip.there is only few weapon in the game to make it worth the trouble. immagine if we can find the weapon used by the owner of the vestige when we arrived on the place they perished . but then again it just nitpick. im glad you also enjoy the game.

I finished it when it came out and really enjoyed it. For characters and story this is the best if we are comparing it to Nioh, Souls and Bloodbourne imo. I know some hated the echoes and walking slowly through the hall of memories or whatever it was called but I loved that. My two main problems were environments just felt really stiff and bland compared to the above and the combat was worse as well especially in comparison to Nioh which really shines in this area among all the others imo. Even when I had finished the game the animations for attacks and their range as well as the response times from my character still caught me out which is not something I can say for the other games I mentioned and it just felt a little to loose.
This game also has a really fun build system its just a shame it takes quite a while to really open up in that department. It shouldnt really be compared to Souls anymore than other FPS should be compared to Doom which of course they were for ages (Doom clones/like etc).
If you want an easier time in Code Vein Io and Yakumo were absolute powerhouses at least I thought so. Hopefully they do a sequel and further polish it.

@jonny s each to their own. I dont rate DS or BB combat particularly highly myself either but for my own part I did have a lot more wtf really? moments in Code Vein than I had in the others which cheapened it a bit in my eyes and I feel a lot of it was down to weaker animations of enemies attacks and absolutely massive hit radius and range of their attacks also backstabbing was ridiculously fiddly.

I would agree on some of the things you have discussed. The AI is a little bit wonky at times. I always use Yakumo because he is best tank bro! Least favorite is sadly Jack. Wonderful character that I love, but his AI is severely broken at times that he dies way too fast due to mistakes. He is great for high attack with his companion skill.

Code Vein quickly became my #1 all-time favorite "souls-like" and the flak that its gotten from the Souls community was discouraging to see. It is absolutely more than just an "anime souls clone" and isn't given enough credit.
My entire blind playthrough of the game was solo, without AI or online help. It is a VERY different game with no partner-- far more intense, and I was stuck in the boss fights for _hours_ since I didn't know how to optimize builds yet!
Character creation is *outstanding.* I spent _two hours_ redesigning Akari's hair the moment I found out just how powerful it is!
I'm happy to see it's not just me who felt these positive vibes with the game. ♥ It only gets crazier after Cathedral, too!

Ya i love Code Vein too...good enough that if Cold Steel 3 didn't come out this year it would've been my personal game of the year for 2019.
Also not big on Dark Souls but love Code Vein for pretty much the same reason: Code Vein has a story that's more character driven than leaving the story mostly to item/book/monster/etc descriptions and the occasional random npc dialgoue (hell this one aspect really ticked me off with FFXV when you consider how much of the world's lore was regulated to this rather than cutscenes like in older FF games for XV's initial release/1.0 version). Also like God Eater/Toukiden's stories more than say Monster Hunter (if i was to use the hunting genre as an example) for pretty much the same reason, though MH World kinda added a bit more cutscene driven story to it than past games...granted when it comes to Hunting games i prefer Monster Hunter over GE and Toukiden though mainly cause the combat's better (especially with World) imo and it has a much larger roster of weapons to choose from (14 types).
Only real disappointing thing for me with Code Vein is that there's such a small amount of weapon types (just 5 though some of them can have 2 different types of weapons in it: Hammers have axes and hammers while halberds have halberds and spears for example and depending on those types the moveset changes a bit (halberds focus more on swinging while spears focus on thrusting for example)).
Then of course the other positives are: nice art style (my own opinion, i don't really care for overly realistic styles), great music, decent dungeons, and probably the best character customization in a long time (both the leeway with creating builds as well as the character appearance). Only real negative i can think of is some connection issues while online and some frame drops (mostly minor though) both in single and multiplayer.

Now i'm on Atleier Iris and then i have Alliance Alive after that), finished up Astral Chain (since i kinda dropped that for Code Vein lol), and mainly been playing Monster Hunter World Iceborne's story since Astral Chain, Code Vein, and Cold Steel 3 caused me to delay playing the game for a while since it launched right in the middle of those 3 lol, finally just got to the Guiding Lands today).
I was thinking of picking Code Vein back up after Ryza but i might delay that until all the dlc episodes come out just so i can play through them as well when i get back to it....should be done by April i think...only games i want to play that are releasing soon are thankfully just Granblue Fantasy Versus on 3/3 and then Trials of Mana in late April (as for why no FFVIIR, while i think the game looks great i'm not buying any of the episodes until all release...not spending about 180 or more bucks for a game that was chopped up into pieces who's quality we still don't know outside the fact part 1 ends after leaving Midgar...which is just about 15% of the original ps1 game), besides that the only other game that's a must have for me is Tales of Arise but it's yet to get a date....or even a 3rd trailer after about 5 months now... Then there's CS4, Trails to Zero and Ao, and Ys9 if they get announced for a localization for this/early next year. Anything else i buy will likely be just a spur of a moment decision...so if i don't get a lot coming out this year i can use this year to reduce my backlog a bit lol.

Its because Christianity has many of its followers who follow the faith, but simultaneously find its lore interesting and underexplored, so media that can flesh out much of this to bring out interesting philosophical questions appeals to people, even if theyre Christians. You seem extremely devout, which I am happy works for you, but many Christian followers in the modern Western world, Id say more so than most other religions, do not look at the religion with the same sacredity as you may. You may see that as sin in culture, but I think that is a very one-perspective driven outlook on a person. Especially with the many sects that exist within the religion, and now with the modern tech culture unifying many ideas across the world, everyone finds their own way to interpret their faith that makes sense to them. Someone using the word "hell" in slang or saying the lord's name in bad language may be taboo by the beliefs you were taught, but to other sect's versions of Christianity, they might not prioritize these same lessons you were taught. As you already know Im sure, it isn't exactly always clear how to derive meaning from every story in the new and old testament, so there is already unintended breaks in many ideas of the church depending on where you are from, how old you are, etc. Lastly, some people just prioritize philosophical hypotheticals in media/books over their own religion. Some people also think both those concepts the same, as their religion is the only philosophical thinking they need. A lot more is left to the individual to make sense of, even if they are exteremely devout, than collective and agreed upon universal truths.

@@PantsaBear Dear Freddie Plaza! Personally, I am probably not such a pious 'model' of an outdated, vague worldview, which is what Christianity is believed to be. I make art in my free time in which I take up controversial topics, but much more than that I don't want to found my own philosophy with it, but rather give space to my imagination and creativity. (I will write down my deviant Art account for you afterwards).
You can't generalize me, no archetype is realized in me. (And I´m although in a straight faith).
My life is full of events and drama as is any other human being. Some have experienced more, some have experienced less.
There was also a long phase in which I looked for my 'own' religion, made experiences with the 'New Age' and asked me philosophical questions and gave me answers. But they didn't work, as it turned out.
I had rejected as a youth the Christian Faith, what didn't bring me any luck to clarify that, I led a long time, a life full of wrong decisions.
But then, after many prayers from my heart, answers came and I met the right people as a matter of course - which I did not immediately recognize and could not classify.
Something bigger than humans could ever organize had led me on a path that was no fun, but it clarified a lot of things.
      (Many things happened ...)
After a long period of research, the Bible turned out to be a specific set of rules. It is a working instruction according to which all people COULD live together in peace, LOVE ... if they confess to it. You don't have to, but it's the one path that never ends. Eternal luck is the grace of our Lord.
In my experience, the phrase, one's own search (No offense) for meaning and truth is the 'slogan' of a clone army of self-proclaimed 'individualists' that drove the decline of the human collective into darkness. Never before have there been so widespread perversions and profanity, bad behavior and ultimately, openly lived hatred, man against man as in the present day, which is also the last days of this human system. Regardless of the mistakes that certain aberrations of the Church may commit, there are sincere, enlightened and understanding Christians. We are one family in spirit and many of us can explain every Bible verse (not interpret it, but explain it because one understood the context). Not everyone can explain ALL verses just like that, but there are many who have even chosen it as their way of life, this perfect teaching all over the world in already translate and teach hundreds of languages (JW.org)
With all of this I want to tell you that I have a wealth of experience, something that goes beyond video games and internet cunning, but still allows me to be humble BECAUSE I learned to understand how a supposedly relative work like the Bible, like our God Out of love, Jehovah and Jeus Christ offers people a solution.
Human society turns out to be chaotic, helpless and without any perspective for the future ... for the eternity of human life. The possibility exists for all persons of all time to live forever in paradise, a small part of it in heaven. Unfortunately, we know from predictions that few people will choose to live forever.
There is no hell but death.
The earth will be transformed into a paradise again, no longer poisoned by the spirit of chaos and half-truths.
And although I play JPRGs, make art, listen to music I want and more. But of course, I obey God's law as best I can because it is righteous and even more full of goodness, forgiveness.

@@vinricvannorth5495 Never meant to paint you as a cliche my friend, I apologize if I came across as doing so. I appreciate the insight into your faith and own philosophy. I dont necessarily understand how you came to some of the conclusions you have, such as the one where individualised thinking has led to hatred or conflict between man, but one of your experiances Im sure has led you to find that to be your truth. I also am a man of Christian faith, formarly of greater faith accompanied with the church itself, and I have heard many stories that even with proper context dont create a simple and clear set of rules defined by how man should live in many instances. I understand that to attempt to live a perfect life is the sin of vanity in of itself, as man is forevrer cast on the principles of sin and forgiveness. I found however, that this vanity has no bounds, even including teaching coming from those of strong faith. The very definition of profanity for example has evolved over thousands of years, over countless languages, and even for someone of the cloth to draw the line as to where such a definition starts and ends in a given time and situation is vain in itself.
Anyway I will not respond to more of what you said, because that's not why Im responding in the first place. I did so to demonstrate that their is duality to almost any ideal you or I may hold in addition to the dichotomy you already subscribe to. If you have come to a conclusion you yourself have found fulfilling or satisfying, I applaud and respect you, but I do think its important to also acknowledge that experiances in our lives are never painted in such binary ways so that we may hold moral dominion over another. The concept of "hell" itself in media isn't exclusively meant to be used as a scary story of eventual damnation/punishment, or used as a tool of temptation even. It can be for sure, but I think thats overly simplifying an entire concept that has been described, extrapulated, and portrayed in a variety of ways for a variety of reasons, and not all of these ways and reasons are sinful. Enlightenment can come from many directions at any time, and not always by the Christian definition. That is a lesson I'm glad to have learned, and one that I do not think I would have truly actualized into myself if not for me being exposed to more communities than the one of Christian faith I grew up with. I too can still enjoy JRPGs and not agree with everything being included, for example the recent excessive fan service/nudity that serves no narrative or idealogical purpose. I dont see myself as a good man, or one bathing in evergrowing sin, and I have still come to conclusions that I would have otherwise if I had just stuck strongly with my faith as my guide, rather than experiancing why these things are sinful for myself. These experiances have led me to find ways to combat temptation I never would have thought otherwise, and I'm proud of at least that much of my character.
Also I really appreciate your art and poetry and how it evolves from piece to piece. Theyre like different pages from the same book, with themes that stand on their own but seem to still tangentally string from one to another no matter which order you digest them in (at least from the stuff in English lol). Must have taken a ton of work, your passion really shines, so I hope you continue to add to your inspiration

Your answer shows me that you practice self-reflection, think critically and have gained experience. I respect that.
Your attitude towards fan service is gratifying, even refreshing.
In the course of time I became sensitive to clumsy depictions of sexuality, but also to excessive violence and, of course, blasphemy.
Since I see myself as a Christian and also describe myself as a Christian and have my clear moral guidelines therein, I cannot abandon certain principles. Hence my ideal is a united truth.
I consider exaggerated individualism difficult because it tends to distance people further from the natural than to move towards the original.
Yes, practically one cannot live without sin. One should understand the grace of God as the solution. Hell is terrible fiction
which arose in the earliest human roots.
But God is love and so it goes without saying that he will not torment anyone forever, nor allow the devil to do that, nor anyone else.
As a good person, I already see someone who at least wants to be and is loyal to what convinces him,

The main problem with the Souls stories, is that even though they're awesome, they're not told "directly": Almost everything is not-so-easy-to-see lore. Once you watch videos about it and investigate you notice how good (and tragic) the stories are.

the core mechanic in the souls games is the "Cheap Death Trope" which may come from the poorly planned terrain (falling or getting stuck between an enemy and something else), then comes the "Surprise A.I." (poorly planned enemy behavior, attack range, area of effect and path), and the constant of "Unfair Gameplay" (your character is weak as #$%&, your attacks are inefective and leave you vulnerable for long periods, on top of that the enemies are damage sponges and they almost never flinch with your attacks)
those 3 are refered to as "The Souls Formula" and those are present in Code Vein and many other games: Sekiro, Nioh, The Surge, even some 2D games have implemented those elements at a lower level, games like Blasphemous, Death Cells and others... I'm so happy this formula will die soon with the end of the 8th-Gen I hope the new trend is something more enjoyable

spoiler free story thing i freking loved and suspected all along when i played the game whas when a serten monster showed up in the game.
Soulsborne is less dark souls and bloodborne and more its own ganera, like rougelike, there are bad soulsborne like lords of the fallen, and then there are good soulsborne like code vein thats all.
iv platinumed all souls borne and almost done it 2 times with dark souls 1 and 2 and i loved code vein.
also disegree that dark souls isent story heavy, its just not shoved down your troat, there is whery DEEP story in dark souls but you haf to fined it, one of the preper to cry moments in dark souls requiers you to haw a ring you can only get by taking it as a gift att the start of the game, OR fined the hidden crow trader and trade a whery rare item to get the ring, after that you need to fined a hidden wall and youl be preperd to cry, but if you missed the ring and the wall you miss it all, i like Yatzys take on it, you might wonder why this wolf with a sword is trying to protect this grave and seams to recodnice you if you done things in a serten order, or you can just be glad that there is anothere big thing to kill. Dark souls is not the anime story where everything is 200% with i love to, loved code vein, it is a whery still and cold and sad plase. id advice you to retry it and get over the herdel with is the start, start as theif, and take the old witches ring, and after the boob boss look for a hidden wall, and youl know dark souls is brilient when it comes to story.

I have always been someone who loved the Dark Souls etc. series in theory, but not in practice. I like the aesthetics, general sense of melancholy, good environmental storytelling. But I am not a great action game player, and I generally play games to unwind rather than beat my head against a wall, so while I own several of them, I generally get stuck pretty early on and don't play them much.
Apparently all it took to get me to get over this hump was taking a Souls game and filling it with anime shit. GF bought me this game a few weeks ago, and it's basically all I've been playing since then.
I deeply appreciate the AI partner they give you, as someone who doesn't have a PSN sub, and doesn't want to play online and open THAT can of worms. Even though they do really dumb things sometimes, and occasionally mess up my awesome plans. They also save my ass often enough to make up for it.

Definitely a great "souls" game for beginners imo: the partner helps you a lot in learning fights and mechanics and to make sure you learn the fight easier., and the story is definitely a plus. Honestly though, I don't like how you're kinda limited with weapons and how so many spells are "meh". I definitely enjoyed playing it though (even got the platinum) and if anyone is curious about souls game this is definitely a good starting point: I played Bloodborne right after Code Vein and definitely helped me understand better how the game works.
But for souls vets....well ...game looks nice and you got anime waifus so it's worth a check. Plus the abilities and blood codes are fun to experiment. And if you're really in for a hard game, remove the partner and good luck with Blade Bearer and Cannoneer!

Code Vein is a gateway drug to the Soulsborne series, including the Sekiro and Elden Ring games. I highly recommend you to give the Miyazaki's ARPG games a last chance, you don't know what you're missing! and isn't truth that the Soulsborne games don't have a story, there is, but it's hidden and scattered in the game's world; you must pay attention to the NPC dialogs, the item and equipment descriptions and even in the game's areas to get that mature and deep dark fantasy story that you want; if you're into dark fantasy literature, Soulsborne games have lots of lore and worldbuilding in its worlds, characters and game systems. I know this game series isn't for everyone because of its famed demanding difficulty, but if you put some effort and patience you will be succeeded, combat is challenging and deep with lots of customization and an almost endless combination of equipment and character classes to choose from; easy to pick up, hard to master. If you love Code Vein, you will love Soulsborne games, I'm incompetent playing action games, but if a low skilled player as I'm can enjoy and finish this kind games, I think you can do it too! I'm a big fan of your work, I have learned a lot about RPG's, specially JRPG's and TRPG's thanks to your channel, keep up the good work! and prepare to die again and again with FromSoft games!

code vein is a huge love letter to dark souls. it plays more like a tales of game though.
the game is really not that difficult. just like dark souls isn't as difficult as people make it out to be. it's at it's core a stat based rpg, which means you can outlevel content. yakumo will win the game for you, unless he's been nerfed since i last played. the most difficult part of code vein is navigating anime londo. i dread it with every playthrough.

The thing i have a issue with in this game is that getting a backstab is pretty much left up to chance since half the time u try one it won't trigger.Something with the enemy models i think.
aside from that its a blast! 3 different endings(u get different blood codes from each ending) and ofc the one thing u did't mention, the Character creator!!!
the stuff u can do in that is unbelievable! if u want some examples, check Quinbobin's channel: ua-cam.com/users/TehMheow
On a final Note, the Catherdral area u are in is the worst in the game(whoever made it should be trapped inside it forever...) so map it out fully so u have a easyer time in it on the other playtroughs.
