I think even the most die-hard JRPG fans have games/series that they just can't get into, it is part of the literal definition of an RPG that you personally take on a 'Role' therefore not all games will click with all personalities. That's why I never recommend specific games, rather publishers like Square Enix, NIS, and Atlus that consistently make quality products and hopefully some game in that group will connect with a person. The best thing about a JRPG is that when it does connect, it can be a bond that lasts a lifetime.
I usually stay away from RPG’s where I’d feel embarrassed if a friend or family member saw me playing it. Usually it’s jrpg games with too much fan service.
@@hafidzfaturrohman5720 You’re talking about modern JRPGs. Nowadays, you can still find deep story lines, interesting characters and rewarding gameplay if you’re prepared to separate the wheat from the chaff (the tasteless waifu simulators chock full of fan service).
Trails of cold steel man. I can't get into that series, i already played and enjoyed trails in the sky and zero but the generic school clothes and the terrible animations back me off, i really like the sprites more.
Some tips about etrian odyssey. You can turn "auto mapping" on for the newer games. It does all the map work for you. And the random encounters are slightly less random as the orb in the bottom of the screen goes from blue to green to orange to red. Once it's in the orange/red color you know you'll have a fight soon.
Yeah, I think they all have automapping now since the first two games were remade on the 3DS. Well, I guess the third one that’s still just a DS game might be the only one without automapping. He could just skip it and play all the 3DS ones, they should all have automapping.
@@Ubu90 I believe it's in the settings menu of the 3ds games. There should be some options, depending on how recent it is, where you can decide how much it automates.
@@carlogustavovalenzuelazepe5774 actually i played a ton of these etrian odyssey games. The auto map feature only fills in the most rudimentary information. Secret passages and different dungeon features have to be mapped in by you. That gets engaging and actually... relaxing
@@markuswithak5084 I dunno. The rest of the series has been a series of attempts to fix the plot issues created by KH2. The villains are largely detached in KH2 (same as the other games but people seem to ignore it with KH2). The worlds in vanilla were really boring/empty and the puzzle pieces didn't fix that. The platforming from the first game was basically tossed out in the second game too. Even the combat often feels gimmicky in boss battles. Just abuse reaction commands, Reflect, Duck Flare, etc. and that's it. The depth is massively overstated. KH2 is my least favorite of KH1-3 and BBS (which has been called KH0 by Nomura, so I'll lump it in there). Most of the games after KH2 share the same flaws but KH2 is the one that introduced them to the series.
When it comes to the Neptunia games, I do admit it is a required taste and the map interface is really off putting to those who are so used to just starting in a village and exploring the world. In Neptunia, the map interface is your world and the parts of the map that are open to you are the Dungeons you have to explore and when you pass through a dungeon that goes into a Story Based cut scene, that is where you progress through the game. It is not like your usual JRPG adventure so I can understand why some can't get into the series. To be honest, I think the most enjoyable Neptunia game is Hyperdimension Neptunia Mk2, the second game in the series and perhaps best played on the PS Vita version that is a remake version of the original 2nd game's story. The opening scene has all 4 Goddesses captured by Tentacle Chords in the Console GraveYard and Artfore is going to kill all 4 Goddesses really slowly, so you play as NepGear (the SEGA GameGear handheld character) and she had to unite the sisters of the original Goddesses in order to save the main heroines. Of course the little sister characters are based on the handhelds of each consoles at the time of 2011 where Nintendo had the 2 screens of the Nintendo DS and therefore Nintendo Goddess little sisters were twins. While the SONY Goddess little sister was the little sister who tried her best at everything but could not do much right in the PSP but she does have good long range sniping abilities. The XBox Goddess didn't have a little sister considering Microsoft didn't get into the Handheld market so the Goddess of the XBox was a mature busty woman who would often want a little sister of her own.
"I dont care at all about tanks!" made me laugh more than I should. I feel the same way about "monster-collecting" mechanics, but for a weird reason: I just like my characters/party members to be as humanoid as possible.
I'm the same. It's not weird - you need emotional attachment in order to feel invested in the outcome, and it's hard to get attached to tanks or monsters as your party members.
I haven’t finished many rpgs, so my experience with them is limited. With that said, I just started Advanced Wars and love that it throws me right into it. Sometimes story can detract from the experience. Its not about controlling characters you’re attached to, it’s about being an efficient strategist and using the tools available to you. I’m still just going through the tutorial, but I think I might finish this one. I’m also playing XCom and Trails of Cold Steel. Love/hate XCom, ToCS is okay so far.
Not to mention it has little to no RPG elements. People wouldn't even consider this game as an RPG if they knew enough about western strategy games. There's room to call X-Com an RPG, or hell, even stuff like Age of Wonders.
Dark Souls and Etrian Oddysey are probably two of the most hardcore series I've ever played. Both games punish you for not playing them right, but I love the heck out of them.
Rune Factory is one that has always been on my "Want to play" list, but never did get around to any of them. Monster Hunter is a massive addiction for me, but it really shouldn't be. Like you I'm story driven, which monhun doesn't have much of, but I also generally dislike grinding, which MonHun has A LOT of, but man.. the fights are always so fun haha.
Hope you've been well Tarks my friend... My top 10 are as followed: 1. Trails of series (Not because I dislike the games, I've never even attempted to pick them up because I'm absolutely overwhelmed with the amount of games, time and side games before the Trails series, It makes me happy loads of people love thoes games, as an outsider I'm just completely lost) 2. Dragon Quest (This is what I call David Bowie to me, Respect David Bowie and what he did for music, acknowledge his influence on music I love but ultimately.... Just don't like it 😂😂 no one rhyme or reason it's just not my thing) 3. Xenosaga (Creeping into Overrated territory... I picked up and played the 1st title 2 years ago.... I fell asleep, From what everyone tells me it's very Wait till you get to hour 20 or what have you before it gets good but yh... Just didn't captivate my imagination) 4. Xenoblade series (3/4 games in the series... This is a very tricky one like.... Once again I respect and appreciate XC1 and it's whole story, I had the PAL collectors edition and all that but the reason why I sold it one was... The sudo MMO wasn't for me, the story while absolutely beautiful, as a completionest the game is very completionest unfriendly, I don't know if the Switch version fixed this but, I just really want to know... Has anyone 100%ed this game and how 😂, XCX I just couldn't get into, lack of story, liked the mechs but that was about it, and I still haven't played XC2 or Golden Country.... No idea if I would like it.... Love the visuals and what it's going for but if it's the same combat as XC1 with difficult competition rate.... On the fence) 5. Pokémon (World of Final Fantasy Maxima is the best Pokémon game of all time 😉😉😂 jokes aside, yh like... I was a 90s kid with the Pokémon cards, loved them, watched the anime, loved the show, the games..... Meh lol) 6. Star Ocean (Really want to take another look at this series... Great name but everytime I pick up one title or another it doesn't click with me for some reason 7. WildArms (I respect the setting, a nice change from the norm but once again... No real hook for me) 8. Valkyria Profile... (Erick Don't Ban me please!!😂😂😂😂😂 But yh like..... The side scrolling platform elements weren't my jam.... Didn't get hooked into the story, the english voice acting in the 1st game made my ears bleed, I understand why people like it, just not for me) 9. .hack A very product of it's time for me.... The sudo MMO thing not really my jam (Odd because I don't mind crap like Sword Art Online y'know) but yh... Extremely overpriced as we know for no reason at all in my eyes because the games are just.... Okay. 10. Ys (This is very different because I ADORE .... Absolutely adore Ys VIII, amazing game but every other title just didn't do it for me.
@@artminusme hey bro quick tip for trails series. Stop looking it as a series you have to finish and just pick up trails in the sky FC. You might find it slow but its a really good game and if you finish it you will automatically stop seeing the series as a burden. Also dont try to binge these games i wont even suggest two of them together cause they are long games.
MH is easily one of the best game series ever to exist. Seriously, every game is at a bare minimum good and fun (even if frustrating sometimes, hitboxes mainly). At best though? You will blow thousands of hours without even noticing. I also dislike grinding but I don't care for story at all, I'm more gameplay focused. So I love MH and it's by far my biggest gaming time sink.
Digimon world 1 is hands down one of the greatest RPGs to date, from graphics, storyline, gameplay the digimon raising mechanic were well before its time. An absolute masterpiece.
I prefer digimon world 3 though, digimon world 1 gameplay is unique but I just can't get into it, what turn me off the most is your digimon dead and you have to raise it again but building the city with the digimon you recruited is super fun feel like suikoden games.
@@riougenkaku1762 i Agree with you about Digimon. My least favorite for PS1. I know i am alone, but i wished a remake with fast paced battle for DW2. Its my favorite by far, because you can battle 3 at same time and the dungeon kind get into me. Also the cybersleuth would be so much better if less useless quests, i want to battle nem digimons not talk with random people in towns...
I have seen a few of your videos, and liked them quite a bit. This video however, blew me away. As the video went on, I thought that I would have liked some of the series that you would eventually mention. No. I don’t like any of them either. Granted, some I have not played, but I have researched all of them. They are very popular right? Some of these series I own every game. They are supposed to be good, right? It just goes to show that like with any media, art is subjective. I also know that a lot of the series that I like others will not care for as well. I just find it interesting that I agree with every single selection that you have mentioned. Cheers.
If you are into japanese strategy games, I highly recommend Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Great tactics and great story. The best ones were on PS2, but XIII on PS4 is also really good.
Yeah i've noticed most other CH/IF games i played have similarities to Neptunia with their battle systems. The one's i've tried are Fairy Fencer F, Death End Re;Quest, Dragon Star Varnir, and even Omega Quintet. Although that last one also reminds me of the Agarest War games.
Hey Erick, i'm a Brazilian and a big fan of your channel. I'm a really fan of Jrpgs, and in my country i don't have much friends fans. Your channel helped me a lot to meet more games like that. Continue with this very good job. (Sorry if have any grammar error. I'm a beginner in english)
@@ericflaviomaltadefreitas3867 Já joguei esse. Um dos melhores de Mega Drive. Atualmente tô rejogando Chrono Trigger e vou começar a jogar Final Fantasy 7 pro ps1 pra embarcar no Remake.
On the subject of Soulsborne: When I first played the original Dark Souls, I really couldn't get into it. I tried my own build, a mix of melee and pyromancer, not really having an idea of what to do. After the first boss outside of the tutorial area I gave up. A year and a half later I was convinced to try it again and this time looked up a mage build (sorceries), since that's the kind of character I play in most games, and ended up falling in love with the game and the genre as well. So, I'm not saying give it another shot but, if someone else had a similar experience to my first try, perhaps my second experience will speak to them as well.
I agree with most of these actually (though I can still enjoy some of them, but I can agree with the faults), but Etrian Odyssey is so near and dear to my heart. But you mentioned it has to have a good story, so makes sense lol
well for neptunia, just stay away from that series in general. once you played one game, you've played them all. and by that i mean every subsequent game is the same shit with a different story and a few battle system tweaks. i mean ffs their upcoming game on the ps5 is a remake of a remake! how lazy can you get?
Rpgs I cant get into: 1. Trails series - being praised for its detailed dialogue is something but for me, it should only take 5-10 minutes and then let you move around. 2. Fire Emblem - stat growth is atrocious in this series. 3. Kingdom Hearts - i used to love playing Chain of Memories in GBA because of hack' n slashy stuff but.... It feels outdated to me now. 4. Summon Night 5 - see no.1 5. Persona - I already find Shin Megami Tensei's dialogue to be intense but this series wants me to take the fillers seriously. 6. Chrono Trigger - I dont like the art and combat.
Id argue that Yokai Watch is different enough from Pokémon to give it an extra slot or extra shot. When it comes to story there is definitely something there but if the problem is how goofy the stories are and the monster collecting in general I can totally understand this position. to this day I have no idea what the story of Etrian Odyssey is about. I played one game a couple of hours but can't remember shit about it
Originally I thought it was gonna be a straight rip off and shovelware but after having to replace my 2DS and YW coming built on the system. I gave it a playthrough and absolutely enjoyed it. I've had more fun with Yokai Watch then the last couple pokemon games as of late for sure.
@@TheStampede_ I remember thinking the same, really. But seeing the battle mechanics were totally different I was hooked. The monster taming itself, too. And the monsters itself being based of Yokai was a nice touch I liked. They were goofy as fuck but that's the charme
Pokemon is so good and the gameplay alone is what does it for me, but then again it was the 1st rpg game series I got into and then I played ff7, haven't stopped since then.
Maybe Digimon Adventure for psp? It was a standard rpg without monster collecting mechanic. And the story is the tv show gamified. Maybe it will suit your taste better
Yeah I know what you mean. I only played the first star Ocean and I couldn't stay with it. I would play it and lose interest. Come back months later and lose interest again. I can't figure out why though.
This list is almost exactly the list I would have too. Except for Soulsborne, I have loved every single one of those from day one. Since you prefer story so much, you might check out the vaatividya lore series - it really helps you to see the story , and it makes playing through the games a whole new experience
That's the problem with every "soulsborne" fan who thinks that everything Miyazaki brings out is good, that all aspects of his games come out and it's not like that, the story of almost all of his games is mediocre or bad, there's something that became fashionable thanks to this saga and is what you call "lore" but do you know what it is? It is not the story that you go through as the protagonist, the "lore" is the mythology behind the story, it is the construction of the world, the presentation of its rules, etc. In other words, it is the description of the world, nothing more, a story by structure is what is told, at the moment where the reader, player or viewer can observe, it does not matter if it is through different narrative styles. but the important thing is that it can be observed for those who said "reader, player or viewer" if not, then that is not history, it is known only as "lore" and if the "lore" of the universes of their games are interesting but not his stories, because although he does something that his fans like and that is that they put together their stories, that brings with it dramaturgical errors or manual narrative structure that all of us who like good stories, distance us from games " soulsborne" and it is the lack of cannon because although people use their imagination to put together the narrative threads of their stories, none is cannon only only always hypotheses and many of them collide with each other, and the problem is that one of the most important rules of movies, books, games, when telling a story it is "if something happens show it" especially it is a rule of both movies, series, and video games. That's the problem with miyazaki's games and no offense to his fans, trying to tell us that he has good stories, when they are created by the fans, giving them a canon when everything comes out of their imagination to fill the story and trying to make sense even to things that don't have it, I'm sorry but I'm going to be frank, nobody but nobody who likes deep and well-written stories in video games, or books considers the soulsborne saga good, but we see it as mediocre and bad in that aspect because it ii and sorry inglish is not my lingua franca sorry for the issues
Even before I clicked on the video, I knew Pokemon was gonna be first. You've made it very clear over the past that you're not the biggest fan of it. Although I find it funny you used Monster Rancher as an example of a monster collection game considering you don't actually capture monsters so much as you, ahem, 'hatch' one monster and then raise it until it dies, after which you can hatch a new one.
The first Digimon back on ps1 was cool though you collected monsters by opening the disc tray and putting in a music cd not sure how that worked but it was cool I remember going to my local library and checking out tons of cds just to see what monsters I would get.
The Kingdom Hearts series is my favorite series of all time (Minus the mobile games X/Unchained X/Union X, PC Browser game X, Back Cover X, anything post KH III Re: MIND DLC BUT PLUS!! TWEWY and TWEWY Final Remix because I'm weird and include that in the series for fun 😉) But I totally understand why as an outsider looking in anyone would be overwhelmed, not wanting to attempt Kingdom Hearts or like yourself not being into it altogether. Hell... It's my favorite series of all time more than any other video game series... It's literally my number 1 spot... but like I mentioned above KH III Re MIND will be my last KH game... I'm a retired KH player I guess. The reason why is because I've grown up with the series at 12 years old when the original PS2 title came out, absolutely captivated me like nothing else and really pushed the boundaries of just being a kids game to something much more deeper. There are four types of Kingdom Hearts fans 1. Only loves KH 1 (or KH 1 & 2) and nothing else. 2. Loves everything Square Enix pumps out for the KH series blindly regardless of quality and ultimately refuses to admit criticism (unfortunately alot of those) 3. People who don't like the series at all (Someone respectful like yourself my friend, others who over hate) which is fine like lol 😂 all good 4. Me.... A retired KH guy who loves a beginning, middle, and ends to his fantasy stories... and I personally believe Kingdom Hearts was meant to go on for a little while longer... but not on forever and a day like it is doing so now (Example if you take the final mix + portion out of KH II that's another way it concludes the series nicely with just 3 games instead 400 😂)... I personally believe the Final Fantasy series during the FF 13 games & FF 14 original (the one that almost f**ked the company) Square was like ... Fans aren't into FF as much as they used to be so let's make Kingdom Hearts never ending because Disney wants it and the fan base buys everything KH anyway, hurting it's reputation creatively in the story to core fans like myself. To the people that want Kingdom Hearts to go in forever and ever and ever.... Why?.... Despite the mobiles back cover foreteller crap portions that I choose to ignore KH III Re MIND really ends the story on a high note. You (Player/Sora) have been trying to stop the unbalance of darkness and light to save you're loved ones across multiple games now make the ultimate sacrifice for the ones... And one you love. In the final battle with Yozora (Nomura) A guy with endless amount of creativity scorn from the repercussions of FF Vs. XIII turned FF XV decides to sacrifice Kingdom Hearts so his FF Vs. XIII story can be told even if it means Kingdom Hearts suffers.... I don't care what's in a black box... I don't care about the Foretellers... I don't care about the Master of Masters.... Because now.... Instead of interesting story beats, all this is, is to milk the fan base dry. And you will never get that satisfying conclusion because Kingdom Hearts has become the New York Yankees. Essentially Ending B for KH III REMIND is my canon ending.... And when you get to the final boss fight you'll understand why I have TWEWY as canon 😉
@@danholo Haha yh man like... Means alot to me yknow 😅 but like I said... I refuse to continue on with the series anymore. Its not Art anymore its pure business which sucks.
None of the Yakuza games have anything to do with drugs or drug dealing - most of the time there is something involved with money or a conspiracy, and each has a pretty solid, gripping story experience with extremely memorable characters and tons of content. The drug dealing thing isn't the best take here in my opinion. To each their own, but honestly, you're missing out on one of the most (more or less) consistently solid franchises in gaming, narrative and gameplay wise.
Good for you. That game is failed as RPG. You need to grinding for every single damn thing in that game. You need to create some generic medicine and after you create it, you still need to BUY it from store. Why in the world i need to buy item that i created ?
@@Sammmmmmmm617 i bought the neptunia trilogy and cant even finish the first one. This game is unwinnable unless you grinding for level and material for crafting
Have you tried Rune Factory 3? I, not a Harvest Moon fan, really enjoyed the story and liked lovely characters. it's recommendable for those who are not a fan of Harvest moon series.
That's the only one I've played. Liked it a lot, except I ended up maxing out the relationships on everyone long before the marriage decision, I mean I guess I could just keep going back to sleep until that happens, but I just sort of left it there. I should go back and finish that.
I understand you don't love Advance Wars... because it's not a tactic jrp. It's a tactic skirmish battle game, without any jrpg element. I do love Advance Wars (expecially the first one) but I understand why they're not your cup of tea.
I agree with you on most/all of these. I am gonna give Neptunia another try though. I didn't realize it was comedy the first time I tried to get into it and it wasn't what I expected. Now that I know that, I'm gonna give it another go. I don't mind the occasional not-so-dark story. That's what I normally play, so a reprieve is nice on occasion.
Kingdom Hearts is a series I tried to like for many many years, since 2006. I played every single game, I tried myself to force to like it, because I was such a huge Final Fantasy and Square Enix fanboy back in the day that I thought that I needed to like Kingdom Hearts as well. But in truth I never liked, I never understood the story and I always thought the story was boring and a mess. Nowadays that I am older I accepted the fact that Kingdom Hearts is not for me.
IMO the story started going nuts after KH2. You had 3 games that fit well enough (KH1, Chain of Memories, KH2)...but then they started adding more and it turned into a convoluted mess that it feels like you need a PhD just to understand what is going on.
@@kerozine819 I said one of the best not the best I agree kh2 is the best but if you compare all the kingdom hearts games to bbs I’d say only 2 is better than bbs
Im surprised about your number 1 choice. Did you try the remake of the first one? Auto maps for you, more of a story and additional bits. Its the only one ive got and played. Im shit at it but I still enjoyed it
If you want a good game try Code Vein, it's combat is based on Dark Souls but with the anime art style from Godeater. It has great story and characters there is fan service but it isn't the main focal point. It's based in a post-apocalyptic world where you play as an immortal type creature called a Revenant (basically a vampire). It isn't as Soulsborne heavy as other games and the character creation is very robust. I don't like soulsborne games either. The art, and story don't appeal to me and they are too difficult. I got Code Vein mainly because the art, story, and character creation appealed to me. I started playing and found myself enjoying it, it was challenging but not so much that I stopped playing it.
I enjoyed the main series neptunia games, i found the meta-storytelling charming for some reason, and i played the originals on ps3 experiencing the evolution of the battle system.
I'd like to suggest you, Landon, a topic for a future video: Best JRPG intros. I've recently uploaded this video: 'Top 10 Video Game Intros Ever! Best Game Opening Cinematics! Most Legendary Video Game Openings Ever' but I considered all genres. I think you are the most suitable man for the job!
I love many games you mentioned, especially Monster Hunter and Etrian Odyssey but I gotta say that you really should give Yakuza a chance unless playing a "real life" setting doesnt appeal to you at all. The stories in these games are amazing. Also, the protagonists of the Yakuza franchise are actually never part of the Yakuza in the actual games for most of the time, which is ironic as hell. They're actually some of the most honorable, morally and ethically good guys I've seen. Seriously, Kiryu has to be the best "good guy" trope I've ever seen, the writers make it look so easy to write his character without falling in the many traps of this trope that it shocks me. I'm not pissed or anything but your sentence "I don't like playing drug dealers" couldn't be more wrong :D You must have mistaken GTA Chinatown Wars (the best drug dealer simulator) with a Yakuza game somehow.
It kind of hurt to see Mario & Luigi series, Advance Wars and especially Rune Factory on this list somewhat. On the other hand though, I thought I was the only person who felt that way about Etrian Odyssey lol
I'm in ALMOST complete agreement with this list. The only one I got into was Kingdom Hearts, but I've also given up on that series now. Part of the reason was the endless string of spinoffs instead of mainline games. But, I think it had more to do with the fact that in the mid 2010's, action games were really going on a rampage, and kind of REPLACING Turn-Based games. Since I strongly prefer Turn-Based, I found myself feeling resentful towards the entire Action genre. So, I spent years and years playing Kingdom Hearts spinoffs while waiting for Kingdom Hearts 3, and then when it finally came out, I just didn't care anymore and didn't even play it.
I'm not a fan of first person dungeon crawlers in general and didn't care for Etrian Odyssey either, so it surprised me how much I loved Strange Journey.
Surprisingly I agree almost with all the list, but some have been my favorites (but still can't get into when I'm adult) - Mario & Luigi (because I didn't play paper mario / Super Mario RPG, those might be better based on people review, but Mario & Luigi is my first Mario RPG so maybe biased) - KH (I did play KH, and KH2 was great, then multiple sequel/prequel are thrown out between consoles/mobile, and KH3 conclusion was one of the worst for me, everything is simplified just so the big boss could die, lots of build up in previous series aren't even important in KH3, heck you can skip them all and it wouldn't change anything) - Pokemon (I grew up playing pokemon (Ruby & Sapphire), then my GBA broke and never really getting DS and 3DS, straight to Switch (Sw/Sh) I was like "oh you can practically beat the game with just starters"), realized it was fun because I played it as a kid, and missing the fanboy factor (I skipped from GBA to Switch), realized how "basic" the game is, like a simple RPGMAKER games, but slapped with Pokemon graphics/theme. people can argue about PvP was tactical, but Single Player Gamer won't bother with that, and even if we played competitive, the combat still suffer from Hax and Luck.
The souls series was one i never expected myself to be so in love with. I played Bloodborne and loved it a lot i never gave up with it. But i never gave dark souls another shot since before that i had played 1&3 a bit and didnt have fun so i found them uninteresting. Until i out of curiosity played demon's souls on ps3. Now ive played all the games 3+ times
I think it's unfair to put soulsborne on the list. Not because of your opinion on the games, but they simply aren't JRPGs. They're western RPGs made in japan, including Sekiro (which does make sense). In the same way that Cosmic Star Heroine is a JRPG, but is made in the west.
He's always doing that. He's of the ones that's determined that the acronym of "JRPG" is taken literally, and keeps trying WRPGS from Japan and not liking them.
Neptunia is kinda fun, but I totally understand why you don't like it, as far as we know you through your channel, you hate fansexservice and that's is the major plot of neptunia games. Now soulsbourne... maybe it's because of your story with games. I grew up loving games like Ninja Gaiden NES and such and soulsbourne are the 'souls' of that type of game... SoulsBourne is the type of game that I always visit again with a new character and never, absolutely never got bored of it, but jrpgs I mostly just finish them and never got back again, with few exceptions. Soulsbourne is about the pleasure of gameplay and mechanics. But you forgot a game that IS soulsbourne and you LOVED...Code Vein.
Has erick covered hogs of war for playstation one yet? It's a tactical rpg game that plays exactly like valkyria chronicles, but with pigs! It's a really funny game with great gameplay and a decent story
Really good reasoning behind all of these, they all make perfect sense based on what you look for in games. Much respect for pointing out Yuzo Koshiro's music in Etrian Odyssey: it's so good!
Correct me if im wrong, but... "I don't find it interesting to control a bunch of generic miniature soldiers" isn't that pretty much what Disgaea does? You have a plethora of generic humans and demons that don't really have much in terms of personality that you use in combat. Only some of the actual characters are used in battle. Now granted i haven't beaten a Disgaea game before, but I've played a decent bit of some. "But the characters are mostly a choke, and hard to take seriously" Again, pretty much Disgaea right? Many characters are humorous and hard to take seriously
I agree with your list, totally! I still have to try Neptunia, but I’m curious so I think I’ll give it a try. Today I got the Chaos Rings tretralogy, let’s see if it’s good.
10.- That's fair 9.- Le gasp... *explains why he does like Shin Megami Tensei*... that's fair. 8.- That's also fair, but this reaffirms my belief that KH2 was the best of the whole saga. Haven't played the third though, so I could be wrong. 7.- Don't like it either, but I think it mostly causes the graphics. The blood makes me nauseos. 6.- I still haven't tried Stardew Valley, so I can't say if I would be a fan of the farming simulator as well. 5.- Just played the GBA one. I guess if they had units instead of generics tanks and soldiers, it would have been better 4.- Never played one, but I do love the Monsters/Armor/Weapons design. Is good worldbuilding exercise 3.- I'm gay, so not touching one. 2.- Same problem as you when I tried one. 1.- Never played it. Still curious. Love your work, and have a good day.
I don’t like monster hunter games either but I just picked up the first stories in preparation for the sequel on the switch. Haven’t started it yet but looking forward to it for sure. I had never even heard of that series. The trailer for part 2 had me IMMEDIATELY!
In defeating the normality of the 17 year old protagonist I found that the idea of what Yakuza: Like a Dragon gives you for age range and the differences in the lead character I find refreshing, however, it is the first game in that series to my knowledge that really did turn-based and the fact it plays that way is a huge reason I respect it as I don't really enjoy the styles of the previous titles nearly as much. That said, the concept of who you're playing as I could certainly see being difficult to adapt to. This is a great list, maybe in time some of these series will end up being games you will change your mind about.
I'm actually on my third try to get into kingdom hearts and i gotten the farthest ever: starting kingdom hearts 2 :P rune factory doesn't get good until 3 but i agree, if you don't like the farming aspect of them better to pass them by, as for collecting monsters i only liked pokemon conquest so far but i was wondering if you accepted games like "ni no kuni" where the monster gathering aspect takes a back seat but still kinda important for the game?
Based on your shirts, I would love to see some vids based around music. Just came from a vid where you were wearing a Cure shirt and now Hocico. Awesome.
That could be exactly my list, until you mentioned Yakuza at the very end. Damn, I love each and every Yakuza game soooo much and Like A Dragon is no exception from this.
@@onionknight_iii3513 i was bothered by that too.... if he actually put more time into any of the game hed realize that even tho the main characters are/were Yakuza, they arent drug addicted, heartless criminals like he seems to assume they are.
I pretty much have the same opinions about most of these. The only series on this list im into is Mario & Luigi, and Neptunia. Although with the Mario & Luigi games i mostly only really like the first 3 games. Neptunia i just like the charm the series has. Not to mention i like the music as well, even though a lot of stuff gets reused throughout the series.
Juuuust saying, but you should play rune factory 3 and 4, and ignore the farming. They're great life simulation rpgs, where you can only farm if you feel like it, as there are many other ways to make money.
makes sense that you wouldn't like Etrain Odyssey if you don't like the mapping. People that are into that game think drawing the map is the best part to the point that most fans declared the series dead when they announced that there would be no more games on the 3DS
I liked Advance Wars but the thing is, it's genre is "War Game" which is very similar to, both yours and mine, favorite genre: SRPG. The main difference between both genres is that in one you control units and in the other, characters. One is a derivative of tatbletop games and the other is closer to JRPGS.
I tried playing Mario & Luigi twice and I have the same problem, despite loving Mario RPG and the Old Door. I think the problem is Mario & Luigi doesn't have that same kind of epic, classic jrpg feel to it that something like Mario RPG did. The premise and dialogue and everything just didn't get me invested the same way or feel as impactful.
Just played 6 of them last year and they were pretty fun. The characters interactions are nice and the amount of in jokes are great. They aren't amazing but they aren't that bad. Better than the Star Ocean games which I just finished playing thru awhile ago.
I am a sucker for 1st person dungeon crawlers and I really wanted to love Etrian Odyssey. I gave multiple tries to multiple titles of this series and nope... can't get into it, don't know why, I just get bored after 1-2 hours.
I'm on the same page with most of these. In addition for me, anything modern or sci-fi I can't get into. Swords, axes, bows, great! Guns, lasers, mechs...can't do it. Beats me.
Pokemon: I grew up with it so I have a decent attachment to the games, but I agree with your take. Digimon: Didn't grow up with it. I heard the games were more mature and story driven, I might give them a shot one day. Kingdom Hearts: Another one I grew up with. You either love it or hate it. I love every entry aside from DDD and III. Soulsborn: I have no interest in this series whatsoever. Rune Factory: I played RF4 recently. It was surprisingly fun. Especially if you're into the romance mechanics. Looking forward to 5. Advance Wars: This series died for a reason. Monster Hunter: Agreed completely. The turn based spin off game that's coming out soon is more my speed. Neptunia: I like these games but recently they haven't been as good as they used to be. Idea Factory is just pumping out filler after filler and it's getting exhausting. The cast is so good, especially when they get their time to shine. The only problem is the games are often shallow and lacking in depth. So much wasted potential to tell interesting stories with this console war concept. Mario & Luigi: I played the first two and enjoyed them. I was always more of a Paper Mario fan myself. I think the games got less interesting after Partners in Time which was my personal favorite. Etrian Odyssey: I have never played any of these. I'll need a chance to form my own opinion. I did play the Persona Q games for the same reason as you. Overall I have to agree with your opinions.
Aside from Yakuza 7 (Like a dragon) none of the Yakuza games are RPGs. Sure you get level up a bit, but that's doesn't make them RPGs, so there are no need for them to be on your channle anyway. But, I think you should give them a try anyway. Because despite the series is called "Yakuza", none of the playable characters are evil yakuza members at the time you play them (maybe aside from Saejima in 4-5, and even that's for debate). And for one who search for good stories, Yakuza has some of the best stories in any game I've played.
That bond is called Star Ocean: till the end of time
truth nothing wrong with that.
I would be interested to know your top 10 favorite JRPG composers, it can possibly be a future subject of video!
He did a top 5 on his podcast.
I usually stay away from RPG’s where I’d feel embarrassed if a friend or family member saw me playing it. Usually it’s jrpg games with too much fan service.
JRPG usually got many of those btw
The best fan service games are usually on the vita or switch, so you can hide in the darkest corner of your home. Free yourself brother.
Is there a JRPG you wouldn't be embarrassed to be seen playing?
Mario and Luigi got me into turned based RPGs
Some tips about etrian odyssey. You can turn "auto mapping" on for the newer games. It does all the map work for you. And the random encounters are slightly less random as the orb in the bottom of the screen goes from blue to green to orange to red. Once it's in the orange/red color you know you'll have a fight soon.
Yeah, I think they all have automapping now since the first two games were remade on the 3DS. Well, I guess the third one that’s still just a DS game might be the only one without automapping. He could just skip it and play all the 3DS ones, they should all have automapping.
how the heck do i do that, ive been doing it all by hand -_-
@@Ubu90 I believe it's in the settings menu of the 3ds games. There should be some options, depending on how recent it is, where you can decide how much it automates.
adding that feature just proves that these kind of dungeons sucks XD
@@carlogustavovalenzuelazepe5774 actually i played a ton of these etrian odyssey games. The auto map feature only fills in the most rudimentary information. Secret passages and different dungeon features have to be mapped in by you. That gets engaging and actually... relaxing

I can summorize for you: i can t get into hardcore game because i m a casual
Advance Wars is a (very good) strategy game, but definitively not a RPG.
Even as a Kingdom Hearts fan, I totally understand why you couldn’t get into it
KH peaked with 2. I played 358/2 days for the OG13 members but after that...eeeeeeeh
@@markuswithak5084 the first two games, and even Chain of Memories for the GBA in my opinion, are fantastic.
@@LunaFaye17 woah you serious? I'm out lol
@@LunaFaye17 Just say no to drugs kids.
Fun fact!: Digimon was designed to be a rival to Tamagotchi rather than pokemon
"I dont care at all about tanks!" made me laugh more than I should. I feel the same way about "monster-collecting" mechanics, but for a weird reason: I just like my characters/party members to be as humanoid as possible.
I'm the same. It's not weird - you need emotional attachment in order to feel invested in the outcome, and it's hard to get attached to tanks or monsters as your party members.
It's the same reason why I didn't like Advance Wars. I get attached to the units. But if they're all generic, what's the point?
I haven’t finished many rpgs, so my experience with them is limited. With that said, I just started Advanced Wars and love that it throws me right into it. Sometimes story can detract from the experience. Its not about controlling characters you’re attached to, it’s about being an efficient strategist and using the tools available to you. I’m still just going through the tutorial, but I think I might finish this one.
I’m also playing XCom and Trails of Cold Steel. Love/hate XCom, ToCS is okay so far.
13:00 now i want a breaking bad Jrpg
For obvious reasons it would have a heavy focus on "crafting" o3o
Advance Wars definitely isn't an RPG, it's a strategy game 😆
Exactly, the whole point is undistilled strategy. Very little story or characterization so you can focus on that aspect.
Not to mention it has little to no RPG elements. People wouldn't even consider this game as an RPG if they knew enough about western strategy games. There's room to call X-Com an RPG, or hell, even stuff like Age of Wonders.
Yeah, once you know that most of his criticisms came across as a pure misunderstanding of what the game was supposed to be.
My top 10 are as followed:
1. Trails of series (Not because I dislike the games, I've never even attempted to pick them up because I'm absolutely overwhelmed with the amount of games, time and side games before the Trails series, It makes me happy loads of people love thoes games, as an outsider I'm just completely lost)
2. Dragon Quest (This is what I call David Bowie to me, Respect David Bowie and what he did for music, acknowledge his influence on music I love but ultimately.... Just don't like it 😂😂 no one rhyme or reason it's just not my thing)
3. Xenosaga (Creeping into Overrated territory... I picked up and played the 1st title 2 years ago.... I fell asleep, From what everyone tells me it's very Wait till you get to hour 20 or what have you before it gets good but yh... Just didn't captivate my imagination)
4. On the fence)
5. Pokémon (World of Final Fantasy Maxima is the best Pokémon game of all time 😉😉😂 jokes aside, yh like... I was a 90s kid with the Pokémon cards, loved them, watched the anime, loved the show, the games..... Meh lol)
6. Star Ocean (Really want to take another look at this series... Great name but everytime I pick up one title or another it doesn't click with me for some reason
7. WildArms (I respect the setting, a nice change from the norm but once again... No real hook for me)
8. Valkyria Profile... (Erick Don't Ban me please!!😂😂😂😂😂 But yh like..... The side scrolling platform elements weren't my jam.... Didn't get hooked into the story, the english voice acting in the 1st game made my ears bleed, I understand why people like it, just not for me)
9. .hack A very product of it's time for me....

I love etrian. I like that Erick made a video about this.
I second this. I really like 8 on ps2. I played 4 on my snes growing up so I recommend that one based off my nostalgia

I'm surprised that you don't like Neptunia's battle system but you like other CH/IF games. Fairy Fencer F is a modified version of Neptunia Victory.
they dont really change much in that system
I don’t know why I like them. I shouldn’t lol
@@ThundagaT2 I thought I was the only person to play Omega Quintet. I've been through many comment sections and never see anyone mention it.

The fact that he mentioned Neptunia is an accomplishment in of itself
On the subject of Soulsborne: When I first played the original Dark Souls, I really couldn't get into it. I tried my own build, a mix of melee and pyromancer, not really having an idea of what to do. After the first boss outside of the tutorial area I gave up. A year and a half later I was convinced to try it again and this time looked up a mage build (sorceries), since that's the kind of character I play in most games, and ended up falling in love with the game and the genre as well. So, I'm not saying give it another shot but, if someone else had a similar experience to my first try, perhaps my second experience will speak to them as well.

well for neptunia, just stay away from that series in general.

Shin Megami Tensei
Valkirya Chronicles

4. Summon Night 5 - see no.1
5. Persona - I already find Shin Megami Tensei's dialogue to be intense but this series wants me to take the fillers seriously.
6. Chrono Trigger - I dont like the art and combat.
okay lang yan kabayan. =)
@TheOutkast4ever I wanna try a Growlanser game since choices matters.
Pokemon is so good and the gameplay alone is what does it for me, but then again it was the 1st rpg game series I got into and then I played ff7, haven't stopped since then.
ive always hated 1 on 1 turn based fights in any jrpg. and pokemon is essentially that the whole time
Maybe Digimon Adventure for psp? It was a standard rpg without monster collecting mechanic. And the story is the tv show gamified. Maybe it will suit your taste better
I have never been able to get into the Star Ocean series. It's, weird, I can't put my finger on to why, but playing them I lose interest quick.
Yeah I know what you mean. I only played the first star Ocean and I couldn't stay with it. I would play it and lose interest. Come back months later and lose interest again. I can't figure out why though.
The last hope remaster is damn good though.
I played the first 2 and was just like eh.. I did hear the Last Hope is good as well.
Last Hope is the only one that doesn't have third act story problems.
For Pokémon/digimon, does this include ni no kuni wrath of the white witch, or is it different enough?
As far as I know, he doesn't like ni no kuni
yes he is not a big fan ni no kuni
Even before I clicked on the video, I knew Pokemon was gonna be first. You've made it very clear over the past that you're not the biggest fan of it. Although I find it funny you used Monster Rancher as an example of a monster collection game considering you don't actually capture monsters so much as you, ahem, 'hatch' one monster and then raise it until it dies, after which you can hatch a new one.
Thought I was the only one not getting Kingdom Hearts!
The first Digimon back on ps1 was cool though you collected monsters by opening the disc tray and putting in a music cd not sure how that worked but it was cool I remember going to my local library and checking out tons of cds just to see what monsters I would get.
Wasnt that Monster Rancher?
The Kingdom Hearts series is my favorite series of all time (Minus the mobile games X/Unchained X/Union X, PC Browser game X, Back Cover X, anything post KH III Re: MIND DLC BUT PLUS!! TWEWY and TWEWY Final Remix because I'm weird and include that in the series for fun 😉)
But I totally understand why as an outsider looking in anyone would be overwhelmed, not wanting to attempt Kingdom Hearts or like yourself not being into it altogether.
There are four types of Kingdom Hearts fans
1. Only loves KH 1 (or KH 1 & 2) and nothing else.
2. Loves everything Square Enix pumps out for the KH series blindly regardless of quality and ultimately refuses to admit criticism (unfortunately alot of those)
3. People who don't like the series at all (Someone respectful like yourself my friend, others who over hate) which is fine like lol 😂 all good
Cool story, Bro.

Man, you really like KH😅
Neptunia difficulty is fucking weird. After the first dungeon I had no idea what to do and was stuck, so I just quit.
Good for you. That game is failed as RPG. You need to grinding for every single damn thing in that game. You need to create some generic medicine and after you create it, you still need to BUY it from store. Why in the world i need to buy item that i created ?
@@the13thjoker that sounds dumb af. I'm not a fan of grinding, so a game build on that sounds terrible lol
I actually agree with all of these, apart from Mario & Luigi. Kinda liked those games.
I understand you don't love Advance Wars... because it's not a tactic jrp. It's a tactic skirmish battle game, without any jrpg element. I do love Advance Wars (expecially the first one) but I understand why they're not your cup of tea.
Ah this is going to be interesting
90% Agree with you... But I love Advance Wars
Birth by sleep is one of the best in the series though
It's not perfect though you have to admit. I mean... Terra...
Pffft no man , kh2 still the best in the series imo bbs has a lot of problems from the gameplay and story
@@kerozine819 I said one of the best not the best I agree kh2 is the best but if you compare all the kingdom hearts games to bbs I’d say only 2 is better than bbs
Have you done "10 worst games from series I love" or "10 best games from series i hate" ?
Didn't know you were a Clan of Xymox fan Erick props👍
When is the Ranking all PS3 JRPG video coming? :D
I enjoyed the main series neptunia games, i found the meta-storytelling charming for some reason, and i played the originals on ps3 experiencing the evolution of the battle system.
Etrian Odyssey was hard for me at first, but after playing Strange Journey Redux, I now love first-person dungeon crawlers.
I'm currently playing SMT Strange Journey and I'm loving it, so next I want to give it a try to Etrian Oddyssey.
Strange journey was also what made me think "maybe I should give EO a shot". I'm playing EO3 and I've never been happier
You aren't missing much tbh. This is a good list.
I'm not pissed or anything but your sentence "I don't like playing drug dealers" couldn't be more wrong :D
You must have mistaken GTA Chinatown Wars (the best drug dealer simulator) with a Yakuza game somehow.
Because of the dark story and demon collecting element. That's why I love the Shin Megami Tensei series and not into Etrian Odyssey.
Most of these can be nest described as, "It's an RPG but..."
Surprisingly I agree almost with all the list, but some have been my favorites (but still can't get into when I'm adult)
- Mario & Luigi (because I didn't play paper mario / Super Mario RPG, those might be better based on people review, but Mario & Luigi is my first Mario RPG so maybe biased)
- KH (I did play KH, and KH2 was great, then multiple sequel/prequel are thrown out between consoles/mobile, and KH3 conclusion was one of the worst for me, everything is simplified just so the big boss could die, lots of build up in previous series aren't even important in KH3, heck you can skip them all and it wouldn't change anything)
- Pokemon (I grew up playing pokemon (Ruby & Sapphire), then my GBA broke and never really getting DS and 3DS, straight to Switch (Sw/Sh) I was like "oh you can practically beat the game with just starters"), realized it was fun because I played it as a kid, and missing the fanboy factor (I skipped from GBA to Switch), realized how "basic" the game is, like a simple RPGMAKER games, but slapped with Pokemon graphics/theme. people can argue about PvP was tactical, but Single Player Gamer won't bother with that, and even if we played competitive, the combat still suffer from Hax and Luck.
The proper way of saying it is 358 By 2 Days.
I love the Etrian Odyssey and the Mario and Luigi games I've played. I want to try a Pokemon game, but otherwise I pretty much feel the same as you
JRPG series I just can't get into? Final Fantasy. I've tried 10 of them and I've only been able to bring myself to finish 2 of those.
Love Etrian Odyssey, but I'm a big dungeon crawler fan. Wonder if theyll ever be able to port that game without dropping the map mechanic
"I don't find it interesting to control a bunch of generic miniature soldiers"
isn't that pretty much what Disgaea does? You have a plethora of generic humans and demons that don't really have much in terms of personality that you use in combat. Only some of the actual characters are used in battle. Now granted i haven't beaten a Disgaea game before, but I've played a decent bit of some.
"But the characters are mostly a choke, and hard to take seriously"
Again, pretty much Disgaea right? Many characters are humorous and hard to take seriously
I agree with your list, totally! I still have to try Neptunia, but I’m curious so I think I’ll give it a try. Today I got the Chaos Rings tretralogy, let’s see if it’s good.
10.- That's fair
9.- Le gasp...
I guess if they had units instead of generics tanks and soldiers, it would have been better
4.- Never played one, but I do love the Monsters/Armor/Weapons design. Is good worldbuilding exercise
3.- I'm gay, so not touching one.
2.- Same problem as you when I tried one.
1.- Never played it. Still curious.
Love your work, and have a good day.
Wow, some of the absolute biggest of the big. You pretty much "cant get into" half of the major RPGs that get released. I feel bad for you, man!
The funny thing is, I never could get into monster hunter main series. I did how ever instantly get into monster hunter stories
I don’t like monster hunter games either but I just picked up the first stories in preparation for the sequel on the switch. Haven’t started it yet but looking forward to it for sure. I had never even heard of that series. The trailer for part 2 had me IMMEDIATELY!
Mh Stories is not bad pretty much MH way of competing with Pokemon.
That's because Stories isn't Monster Hunter at all. You're literally a Rider.
I can't get into Monster Hunter either, I don't really understand the games like it doesn't click with me. Not having a story also doesn't help.
Yeah, no idea where he got the drug dealer impression from. They aren't dealers in any game in the series.
Like a Dragon has become Top 3 favorite RPGs for me. I’m going for the platinum now which is something I never do!
@@onionknight_iii3513 i was bothered by that too.... if he actually put more time into any of the game hed realize that even tho the main characters are/were Yakuza, they arent drug addicted, heartless criminals like he seems to assume they are.
Same here. I absolutely do not get the drug dealer reference. Kazuma and Ichiban are such likeable characters with their heart in the right place.
I doubt he played the game, to be honest.
Megadimension Neptunia Victory 2 was really fun. I really enjoyed the combat
Seems like he dislikes difficult games. However I agree with about half these especially the top 3
makes sense that you wouldn't like Etrain Odyssey if you don't like the mapping.
You had the stomach to at least attempt to get into the Neptunia series. That says a lot m8 xD
Just played 6 of them last year and they were pretty fun. The characters interactions are nice and the amount of in jokes are great. They aren't amazing but they aren't that bad. Better than the Star Ocean games which I just finished playing thru awhile ago.
The guy from game planet always looks at me with a "ewww face" when he sees me buy anime games Im the only person in my town who buys them
@@carlogustavovalenzuelazepe5774 lol rip
I am a sucker for 1st person dungeon crawlers and I really wanted to love Etrian Odyssey. I gave multiple tries to multiple titles of this series and nope... can't get into it, don't know why, I just get bored after 1-2 hours.
With you not enjoying Souls born games. Have you played any of the Nioh games?
How about the Rance series of games?
