  • Operation Jaywick, one of World War II's most daring Allied missions, saw six men of Z Special Unit take on the might of the Japanese empire. Now, 70 years later, Operation Jaywick: Sinking Japan chronicles the story of a group as they attempt to recreate this perilous journey, pushing their limits to honor those who risked their lives.

In 1981, the last Cope Thunder Operation, in the PI, Clark AFB, I was with VMA 542 Harrier Squadron, and Ozzy's, had the Mirage Jets, and we hit them with a night op, painting a tweedy bird emblem, behind the retractable air intake ducks. They did the same 2 nights later, with a kangaroo stencil, to our Harriers. We gave them a bit, about how nice their legs looked in those shorts they wore, at the debriefing. That is where the picture of a Harrier, on the water over a reef was taken. Great bunch of Lads ! Oorah !

I remember reading about this operation. I think the book was called "The Tigers Revenge". If i recall they sank every ship in Singapore harbour.
Another good reference is another book called "The Mighty Krait".
Another raid followed later but the Japanese hunted them down.

Return of the tiger, the heroes, heroes of Rimau are amongst the books that are available on Z Special. Second raid was named Rimau. Total disaster 23 men dead. Ten of them “executed” a month before wars end in Singapore .

I think you’ll find Ivan Lyon was the chap who organised the raid on the German ships in Bordeaux. Also good move on the modern Fulbot canoes.

I believe that would have been Blondie Hasler mate not Ivan Lyon.

Ivan Lyon was definatly the organiser of the Jaywick raid and the later Rimau raid. He escaped the fall of Singapore in a small sailing boat headed across the Indian Ocean

Interesting story there are many other daring operations that you could look at like the like the blowing up of the oil refinery in sigapore harbour by men of the 2/12 royal Australian engineers and after being separated platoon leader lance corporal Peter heron spent 3 days locating his missing men all the while dodging Japanese patrols who had been tipped off by a teenage malay boy who was approached by the missing 3 information about the movement of the Japanese patrols looking for the men hideing out when corporal heron found his men all the while dodging Japanese patrols made it back to allied lines the same platoon a few days later with the allied forces in a fighting retreat the Japanese forces made there way to the causeway crossing along with thousands of speedwell push bikes taken from Malaysian factories a light tank in front not realising that the same platoon led by corporal heron had laid all the explosives they could find lined the causeway and lined the approaches with bren guns out of sight let the causeway reach its capacity before detonating the explosives with speedwell push bikes raining down for minutes

Now do Operation Frankton, an attack on German ships in Bordeaux by British Royal Marines travelling by folding kayaks in December 1942. Guess the Aussies borrowed tbe idea.

Lyon had no idea of operation frankton. He was working through soe and aib. He got the idea for canoes from Davidson who had paddled around Malayan rivers in one pre war

They didn’t sink a fleet. The mined six ships in Keppel Harbour, the inspection anchorage and the roads.

To be fair, a fleet is defined as a ‘group of ships’ , which to me says 3 or more ships… I guess it’s kind of open to personal interpretation on what you consider a ‘fleet’.
