- On 26 September 1943, a group of six men paddled their folding canoes quietly into the Singapore harbour. All around them, the harbour bustled with activity, but they silently slipped undetected between the massive ships berthed along the docks. They were agents of Special Unit Z deployed by the Allied forces to sabotage shipping inside the Singapore harbour, which was occupied by Japanese forces. The men attached limpet mines to the hulls of seven ships and then paddled back to their forward base just 19 km/12 miles away. When the mines detonated, they sank or damaged 39,000 tonnes of shipping, leaving the Japanese completely stunned. Join us as we take a closer look at the amazing story of Operation Jaywick.

Krait arrived in Cairns as Deck Freight on a Freighter. It broke down so many times and was eventually towed into Brisbane? From memory. Was given a new Gardner engine in Cairns. The raiding party continued training in Cairns. Even a raid on Townsville Harbour launched from Magnetic Island. Sam Carey was one of brains behind this Operation. Originally meant for Rabaul Harbour in PNG.

Maybe a small operation, maybe a pin prick, but they sank 7 ships with limpet mines damaged or sunk inside Singapore Harbour a Japanese stronghold. But the Japanese lost the use of 7 ships that could delay delivery of supplies or soldiers to Japanese bases.

My Father was a crew member on Kraitband escaped Singapore with Ivan Lyon. Krait should be pronounced Krite.

I read that one of the greater hazards to the crew was the cockroaches infesting the Krait.

The video might be improved by describing the Japanese retaliation against the local population for this attack. Was it God’s will the Japanese tortured the local Chinese population?
