At 07.37 on 6th June 1944, the ramps of the landing craft carrying the men of A and D companies 6th battalion Green Howards went down, and the men stormed up the beaches of Normandy. Now Dr James Rogers is going to put D-Day under the microscope, following in the footsteps of the men of the Green Howards. All through my 14 year military career, I served with the 2nd Battalion The Yorkshire Regiment (Green Howards), just after it changed from 1st Battalion Green Howards, right up until it changed again in 2013 when they got rid of the Green Howards title from the 2nd Battalion of the Yorkshire Regiment, and I moved to the 1st Battalion of the Yorkshire Regiment, and no matter how much they changed the name and tried to do away with old Regimental history, I and those like me who had been 1 Green Howards and 2nd Yorkshire Regiment (Green Howards) always held pride the name of Stan Hollis VC who came from the same places and streets as us rough lads from Teesside and North Yorkshire.

So, that's what James Rogers looks like? Different than I expected. I've been listening to his Warfare podcast forever. It's awesome.
Why show an American soldier on the cover picture ? If you get that part wrong why should I believe these "expert" historians
I doubt it was the historians who made the thumbnail, more probably the production team.

My grandad was there with the Green Howards on D-Day. One of the lucky ones who made it through.

My late father landed with the 6th battalion so it was interesting to see where and how they advanced. He was lightly wounded by mortarfire coming off the beach which unfortunately also killed 2 or 3 of his section.
I put a “ like “ to this vid out of respect for the achievements of the brave lads of the Green Howards . Not for the poor presentation during it’s entirety, awful expert who can not be understood & the insulting thumbnail of a GI at the beginning .Should have got James Holland to do this or Mark Urban .
A well told story, which I didn't know of (and I'm an old British army veteran). The saddest part for me was soldiers getting hit by friendly fire. No one to blame for that, it's the confusion of battle. R.I.P. all those who never made it back home.
Fantastic to see Ken Cooke in this but please Dan and Co, the AI generated image on the Thumbnail for this is not just awful but a disgrace and mocking of the British Army in 1944!!

The Canadians got 4 miles away from Caen on D-Day, which is approximately 9 miles from Juno Beach.

Another claim of going farthest on D-Day, according to other sources, Canadians penetrated the furthest on the first day.

I live near Richmond, North Yorkshire where they have the Green Howard's museum which charts the history of this famous British Army regiment.
The thumbnail is so unhistorical that I deem the video not worth watching. As said in the military "Attention to detail!"

It was mentioned thar the Green Howard's advanced with tanks and artillery,it seems that the Royal Engineers were left out of the mentions, yet again. The sappers went in on the first waves to clear the mines and obstacles and to get the troops off the beaches to go inland. They also advanced inland supporting the spearhead.
The R.E did get a mention, but, like you expressed, it was very brief, no mention of the Sappers. 😢

@@wessexdruid7598 Not all RE are sappers, the RE encompasses a huge range of specialist disciplines, Sappers are just one of those, and they work as part of the RE, you wouldn’t expect an bridge building RE to be the same one that specialised in blowing bridges up, I would expect that all RE personnel would have been trained in demolition but not to the extent of a sappers knowledge of the art of blowing stuff up. If my memory serves me the RE were formerly known as the “Pioneer Corp” and today they are the “Royal Electrical & Mechanical Engineers” or just

@@wessexdruid7598 , My apologies I miss quoted the narration of course they got a very very brief mention, but it seems to me that without the R.E in force, with all their trained Specialists represented, the horrendous battle to get of the beach would have been far far harder and deadlier than it already was. Don’t get me wrong, this video is about the Green Howards and so, quite rightly, the focus was on them and their actions during D-day, or more specifically Operation Neptune, but, and their is always a but, by having that focus on the G.H the other D-day supporting personnel get either a brief mention or no mention at all, people like the RAF personnel that landed on Omaha Beach (I think) to set up some sort of special equipment and man it is nearly always
omitted, the Beach masters and even the clergy are in the same group of personnel that had as much to do with the success of D-day as anyone else, a D-day Veteran is a very special person and deserve all the recognition and plaudits they deserve, but just as important are the men and women who landed in France on D+1 and beyond until the Nazis were finally defeated, so a brief mention is not good enough, their part in this historical and heinous war against the Axis forces needs to be remembered and to be held up as a symbol of how evil 👿 has to be confronted and defeated.

From their own website _"Royal Engineer soldiers are called Sappers! We are unique, motivated and intelligent. We are multi-skilled soldiers, combat engineers and tradesmen. We provide essential support to all areas of Defence in peacetime and on operations."_
The basic rank of the Engineers is Sapper, not Private.
The RE, the REME and the Royal Pioneer Corps were all separate corps of the British Army, created separately, to do different roles. However the Pioneer Corps was amalgamated into the Royal Logistics Corps on its formation in 1993.

Any special forces had to be an ability to infiltrate any beaches unseen and gracefully..

Just finished an oral history of Dday, unfathomable what those boys went through. As a combat veteran I'm honored to of stood on the shoulders of these giants!

This story in our history isnt about those who gained the most yards on that day,,,,its about a VC the only VC awarded on the 6th of June to a CSM of X1X The Green Howards and the action took by that Warrior ,,,,had he not taken those very objectives and actions that showed a bravery like no other on that very day history would,ve told us all a different story not msd in yards, That very VICTORIA CROSS is a journey very few Men ever conqure never mind to see what that jouneys acheivments and objectives bring them at the very end of their day that being D-DAY and as we stand today it is known as longest day not the longest YARD-GAINED and lest we never forget all of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice on that very journey because their journey was just a step to far not measured in YARDS.

Eric Turnbull (the guy from Dunfermline) lives locally and runs a company giving battlefield tours. Dr James Rogers is DIAS Assistant Professor in War Studies at Loughborough University, within the Centre for War Studies, at SDU, and Associate Fellow within LSE IDEAS at the London School of Economics. He is currently Special Advisor to the UK Parliament's All-Party Parliamentary Group on Drones and a UK MoD Defence Opinion Leader. He has previously been a Visiting Research Fellow at Stanford University, Yale University, and the University of Oxford.
