Bonzo is the grandfather of modern rock drumming. He’s a human metronome and has the best grooves. Almost every drummer today is influenced by him one way or another.
Overrated.
I always wondered if he had water inside those toms when he did the hand playing. Such an amazing eerie sound that nobody else could duplicate?
@@kennycab3374 I think Zep started using a synthsizer on Bonzo's drums at this time.
Toss up between him and Keith Moon…Moon started the whole “bringing the drummer from just a timekeeper, to a lead instrument”….Bonham did as well, just a bit later….both are drumming gods tho
@@jimboforty well, its not a toss up because Bonham was infinitely better than him
There’s only 2 types of people. People who love zeppelin and people who haven’t heard them yet.
Very good
I approve of that statement!
No there's a third bunch who have heard them and insist they don't like them. Probably off their medications.
And then there's Keith Richards who's in denial
@@user-gu7kk5zk2b there's always some jackass that thinks they have to add to the joke and just ruins it
Arguably the greatest drummer ever for the greatest band ever. Imho. The four members were all Mount Rushmore of their instrument and to be all in the same band was a gift to music. 💙🤘
Agreed 100%
John Bonham was (and is) definitely one of the greatest of all time. His talent and art is sorely missed. His untimely death spelled the end of Led Zeppelin; one of the most influential bands of the 20th century. His contribution to that influence can not be overstated.
Saw Zeppelin 9 times live in concert. John the best drummer…Ever.
Led Zeppelin is my all time favorite band
I had the honor and privilege of seeing Led Zeppelin in concert many times John Bonham. In my humble opinion, it is the greatest drummer of all time. And yes, you would have been amazed seeing them in concert. He was truly a living legend. Thank you for this a trip dumb memory lane
Lucky you!!!!❤
Not one, but the greatest of all times Mr Bohnam RIP you will always be missed 🙏🏻❤️
You simply cannot replace a drummer like John Bonham. Losing a drummer of that magnitude is always the hardest for a band like Led Zeppelin to continue. Yes his son, Jason was his flesh in blood, but he can’t replace his dad behind that kit. RIP to a great rock drumming legend.
“Bonzo” is considered one of the greatest rock drummers of all time. Some call him the Jimi Hendrix of drumming. I was privileged to see Led Zeppelin twice in concert and John was awesome and the glue that held everything together.
Bonham once famously said that its not what you put in, but what you leave out. The space between beats is just as important as the beats themselves. Good advice not only for drummers, but any musician.
there is an interesting quote for jimmy that came out after the remastering was done - the studio engineer was doing a play back and noted 'a missed beat' and asked jimmy if they should go back and fix it - jimmys reply was to the effect john left it out for a reason there's nothing to fix
One the lady musicians in Prince's band was quoting him when before each rehearsal he would remind the band of the unseen & unheard band member "Silence"
Big Zeppelin fan here ! Saw them in concert twice back in the 70s ! He was jaw droppingly awesome !
I have loved zeppelin for 50 years, they are one of my first loves.
I play guitar and this band is one of my greatest influences.
EVERY ONE should listen to some zeppelin so that they can recognise their brilliance.
Bonzo was to rock what Krupa was to jazz, Neil Peart was to rock what Buddy Rich was to jazz. So, take your pick. Jazz was the catalyst. There's been so many incredible drummers. I've loved Bonham since, at 16, "Good Times Bad Times." I got the first record in early 1969. Jimmy Page produced it and, spending most of his previous career as a studio session player, had picked up ideas on things like mic-placement on drums plus very unusual guitar sounds. I remember telling my friends, with that first record, it was suddenly like the drum kit was in the room with you! Live, Bonzo's drums set up a pulse that lasted the night and even for days after. I just knew that he was never boring. I didn't think then that his prowess was to the extent it was. My fave Bonzo solo was "'Moby Dick" at the Royal Albert Hall in 1970. He was just 21.
Greatest drummer of all time! Please do more Zeppelin!
Please..Buddy blows him away
@@nofrenz2065 NO WAY
Who's your favorite
I usually can only stand about 1 min or less of a drum solo before i stop listening, but this one is just so groovy that its a pleasure to listen to the whole thing.
Only John Bonham could pull off a 20 min. drum solo using only basically a Snare Drum and a Hi Hat . 💫
i once saw him do a 31 minute drum solo during moby dick and zeppelin played 4 hours and 20 minutes that night best show i ever saw!!!!!
Yes! He's got what? 4-5 skins to hit on this song? Freakin' talent!!!
Not a fan of drum solos but when playing a song Bonham is unbelievable!Give a listen to In My Time Of Dying Live and you will know what i’m talking about
I’m a drummer and I followed Bonzo and Neil two totally different styles, I like Bonzo more because he had great beats and a thick sound, all drummers have their own style I respect them all!!!!!
Thanks for saying. My exact sentiments brother, I was just too lazy to type it.😂. So, in essence, you speak for both of us! Peace!
Peart was a master, supporter of one of the greatest prog rock bands ever, besides writing almost all their songs. Bonzo was a master leader of the greatest rock band ever.
Definitely think Moby Dick and Bonzo’s Montreux are better showcases for Bonham, but he was also amazing on the music where he wasn't the featured band member. Kashmir, Dazed and Confused, When the Levee Breaks, In My Time of Dying, were all amazing tracks with Bonham going nuts behind the others.
Bonzo was definitely one of the best drummers of all time. He's definitely the greatest rock and roll drummers of all time. This is his last public full drum solo that he performed.
While this solo is amazing - other notable solos on this tour were May 21st, 1977 at Houston, June 21st and 23rd at the LA Forum. His 1976 drum solo (from the original release of The Song Remains the Same) recorded in late July 1973 is amazeballs.
Also, his Royal Albert Hall performance from Jan 9th, 1970, from when he was 21 yrs old - is incredible. ❤
Great reaction -- RIP Bonzo - we still love you and will never forget you ! ❤💔❤️
Yes he was one of the greatest drummers of all time! YES, DO SOME MORE REACTIONS, you’re in for a real treat.
Thank you John. If anyone could play drums better that Bonzo, more than 45 YEARS ago, then they would have been the best EVER. Only one bass drum and only a single bass pedal. Just listening to high hat over bass roll demonstrates why he didn't ever need to play double bass. Thank you john for hundreds og hours of personal enjoyment, and encouraging Jason to play too; as well as he does.
people could play better than Bonzo back then. He wasn't loved because he had the most chops/technique....British contemporaries like Ian Paice, Bill Bruford, Mike Giles, Jon Hiseman, Aynsley Dunbar, Robert Wyatt, Mitch Mitchell, Ginger Baker, Tony Newman, Ric Lee and various others were ahead or equal to him in that regard.
I seen Them four times In the 70s and they were on a different planet to everyone around them at that time as a band and individually and putting his kit through a Sinth in the last part of the solo was new and amazing live ,RIP Bonzo you were the man
It's not just his solos but his creativity and metronomic timing.
That sound You heard was John Using a Timpani Drum that has a Pitch pedal under it along with a Flanger or Phase shifter, John Bonham used a pair of Ludwig timpani alot for Lliver perfoamances.
“Achilles Last Stand” at Knebworth 79, his drumming is phenomenal like a machine. So fast.
The intro song, Out On The Tiles , from Zep III is a great song to cover. Bonham does a lot of Joe Morello's grooves. Morello used his hands to solo 20 years before Bonham. From this era ....Carl Palmer , Bonham , Ginger Baker, Kieth Moon , and Ward were all great drummers.
I have Bohnam in the top five. I used have him number 1 until Danny Cary stole my heart. Bohnam groove can’t be topped by anyone in my opinion. He’s not the most virtuoso drummer there is but his groove can’t be topped no one can’t sound like him. He’s the triplet king 👑
No one can sound like Gonzo Bonzo - except his son. It's as spooky as shit.
I agree about Danny, but the difference with bonzo is he only had one kick drum beater. He had legitimately the best right foot and all of rock and roll... And you're right, fool in the rain is the best groove ever... It's hard to compare him to modern drummers because they used two beaters ...
@@SuperSushidog i hope you're kidding...when I hear Jason play I can't help but think he was adopted.
Ii think that's exactly what makes him very much so virtuosic...no one can sound like him
I love many drummers, but for me, John had a swing and feel so inviting and powerful that it carries the song along. His contribution to songs was huge. Solo is nice, but I prefer to hear him in a song
Bonzo was one of his generations best. Drummers these days are absolutely incredible!!!!
ANY generation's best.
Just amazing, he was/is the best ever, I wish he was still here to thrill us all as he did when I saw him at Glatonbury in the 70's, sadly missed!
I think this drummer is impressed! ❤Bonham was the heart of LED Zeppelin
I’m a bias John bonham fan since the 70s and my record store Led Zeppelin records prove it. So I’m just gonna say thanks for your recognition ✌️ - Thomas
The world kinda shifted for me the first time I heard Led Zepp leaking out of my brothers' room next door. Remember, this was on a table top turn table with big o wires all over to get some sound through what would now seem like terrible speakers. So ridiculous, so audacious, so loud. The imperfection of playing music using a turn table (watch out! you'll make it skip!) was oddly beautiful. It required some work, some intensity, some care of behalf of the listeners. Music took up literal space back then. Worth it.
absolute fucking best drummer that ever existed
The best rock drummer of all time - no one can sound like him - no one
Buddy, Bonham, Neil Peart, Purdy, and everyone else I'm forgetting..All freaking awesome drummers.
Thanks for posting.
I never yet have heard any drummer as great as Bonzo. He is the best. Im 65. Julie
One of the best yes. Considering the fact that he played by ear. Self-taught. one of the best yes sir you got my vote.
Bonzo didn't just keep great time or bang on the drums, he was a conductor taking us on a journey, a musical, a play, a story etc...
I’m a bassist, never been a drummer. But I will say that every time I hear a Bonham groove it inspires me to play something.
He plays with so much power and feel. He speeds up and slows down within the same song, just the slightest bit, and adds that layer of musicality and feel that click tracks kill
John Bonham best drummer of all time who will never be matched
Timpani is the unique sound. John Henry Bonham was my first inspiration on them drums and still my favorite if I can only have one. His style will never get old in my world. Timpani, changing the drum head tension and playing without sticks takes talent and dedication. "Why doesnt Moby Dick have lyrics?" Is the dumbest thing anyone has ever said to me. Try Buddy Rich or Gene Krupa too.
Thanks for answering that question. Very poor video quality. Now was that Page joining in making all those trippy sounds during that part? Synthysizer sounding stuff.
@snakeinthegrass7443 you're welcome. I'm no expert but I assume it was John Paul Jones the bass / keyboardist.
Keeping his hats running with the Tamborine attached was a signature sound. Clean rolls , his snare tone with a low bass drum and triplets slotted in all over the place. He owns this sound.
Apart Jazz drummers that are from a separate category, Bonzo is still the world’s Best, of course my own personal opinion! As not a professional drummer, he’s pureness , clean drumming without smudges is even unique!
You can hear Belson , Rich , Krupa in there Bonzo always tipped his hat to those lads .
Thanks for the advice!
Zepplin came through Chicago on their first American tour. The background group was Jethro Tull. I was on some very strong acid for the first time and sitting upfront. They played their first album and Jimmy Page's guitar solos live were absolutely incredible. They played until 3am and there were only about 50 people who stayed til the end. And we were shouting for them to keep playing. At the end I was right next to the stage and Robert Plant leaned down and looked right at me and whispered without the mic "We can't give you everything you're looking for." I remember thinking, "Hey wait a minute, I thought rock and roll was forever." I was only 17, needed to mature a bit. My friend invited me to the concert. I had no idea what I was walking into, never even heard of Zepplin but wow, what a memorable experience!
I am amazed at the way he drums to the lead not bass guitar. He was truly unique and a legend.
thats the way jimmy wanted it.
Iron Butterfly's Ron Bushy solo on "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida".
The tambourine on the hi-hat was something that not many drummers did and it sounded so good when John Bonham did his solos
The best drummer of all time, HANDS DOWN!¡!!
For another Bonham solo - Moby Dick from the Royal Albert Hall concert.
For a sense of his mastery of different grooves - Dazed & Confused, Bron Yr Stomp, When The Levee Breaks, and the remarkable Fool In The Rain.
For an utterly incredible modern player, probably the most technically proficient check out Virgil Donati. Warning - As a drummer, watching & hearing Donati play might break your heart. His "Concerto For Drums" is superhuman playing.
Moby Dick is my 7 year old granddaughter 's Favorite rock song , then it's her twin sisters fave is Bring it on Home
Bonzo was a beast on the drums. He was the greatest of all time, hands down!!!
Total Zep fan here!!
Bonzo was so damn great!
At about the 18 min mark - Bonzo turns to whack, palm mute and wail on his tympani. They started their 1977 tour, their last US tour ever, on April 1st, 1977 and John Bonham is credited as the first drummer to use electronic treatments on his drums live - by any drummer.
It sound pretty cool and it's only used during the tymp part, but my preference is the natural sounds of his tymps from the previous tours - in which there was no electronic treatment "wash out" of his tymps. He was a musical genius ! ❤🎉❤
Life is short, but the soul is forever. John bonham we miss u everyday!
The great John Bonham came up with the term “Stomp Groove.” 🔥🔥🔥🔥
I think that was termed by John Paul Jones...
I saw Zeppelin live July 21,1973 in Providence Rhode Island still have my ticket stub payed $7.50.
My Mom's dad was a jazz musician. I grew up listening to Buddy Rich and Gene Krupa and other
jazz style players. John Bonham gave those guys credit he is a top rock drummer for sure.
Saw Zep live in 1979, the year before Bonzo died. Back then, long - very long - solos on drums and guitars were a thing but I find it gets a bit much after a while - too jazzy. But he was a hard living man and one hell of a unique drummer. As far as comparing him to others I've seen play live, only Ginger Baker, who I saw in 1981, and Keith Moon, who I saw in 75, came close. Well, until back in 2017 when I discovered Akane Hirose of the Japanese Hard Rock band Band-Maid. Jimmy Page was so impressed after seeing Akane perform with Band-Maid that he went backstage and asked if he could get a selfie with her! Try Band-Maid's live performance of FREEDOM from their YT channel to see her playing a superb solo.
Seems like it was just fill time for giving the other band members a break in the middle of a concert. The drummer's job is to bust his ass for the whole gig, while the others have a pop-tart.
I’ve seen everything Led Zeppelin has come out with and every UA-cam video but have never seen this
His high hat tempo is insanely perfect just amazing. Big Peart fan but his solos were never this long. But then his playing was more intense throughout.
The GOAT at work
omfg, he really was the most amazing drummer ever, R.I.P. BONZO. a true god given talent. x
Amazing drummer one of best ever
Bonzo is the best in the world obviously!! Yes,do more Zep,you won't regret it! 😊
His style was definitely unique in the way he skips beats but keeps everything in time. Not the most technical drummer but one of rocks best.
Hats off to John Bonham! saw the band at the Bath Jazz and Blues Festival 1969, oh my what a day. Moon in his earlier period, Baker. Mitchell...
im in my 60s , heard the best of all yrs so far. but for his time, his way of playing. no one comes close R.I.P. BONZO.
The best drum solo I ever saw live was Jerry Mercer of April Wine. Definitely worth checking out. He was totally self-taught. An absolute animal on the drums.
Yep! Jerry was a pretty good drummer.
John Henry Bonham is by an unreachable distance the greatest drummer to ever sit behind a drum kit!!! Hard to say who holds the second place, but first place is taken for all of time!! EOD
Absolutely one of the best of his era. Although Bonham thought that Barrymore Barlow of Jethro Tull was the greatest of his era.
I really love the slapping an finger flicking this guy was an amazing drummer ❤ loved it
Bonham is my ALL TIME drum hero and taught me so many awesome grooves. He always sounded like a runaway freight train during his solos. But, my all time fave solo is Peart from Exit Stage Left, live from their Moving Pictures tour.
Yes, please do more reactions of Led Zeppelin. Bonzo (as well as all the other band members) was the GOAT
He was absolutely wonderful. I was right up front in a 3 hour show in the mid 70’s. I’ll never forget. Jimmy was wearing a black crushed velvet simultaneous with dragons embroider led on it. More Led Zeppelin. “Babe I’m Gonna Leave you”. “When the Levy Breaks”.
His sound, attack and style are unmatched by any other drummer in rock and great enough that LZ couldn’t go on without him.
The best, raw and tight. Never could get bored of watching and listening.😊❤
One of the best drimmers indeed, a legend indeed, and taken to soon
I liked the drummers solo from Santanas soull sacrifice at Woodstock
I shy away from “best” anything, but definitely unique and innovative. He had his gifts.
Saw them twice 1975 -77 they were All Amazing 3hr concerts Best rock band ever !
He was the "ice breaker" of everything drums in my opinion. His use of triplets in rock gave it that funky feel unlike other bands in the Era. His fills had fills. His intentional off beat moments blended in perfectly. He is the greatest of all time ....there's some great ones out there that kills me not to mention but the title of the greatest has to go to the point man.....JOHN B. GODSPEED
Like many I'm sure got started down that often very frustrating road to tonal perfection and becoming one with our drum kits because of this one man. Awesome video. Oh and thank you for saying Peart's name correctly. Respect.
He was such a powerful drummer, that he could have demolished the Berlin wall with his sticks
This is Led Zeppelin's final North American tour btw. It ended up getting cut short when Robert Plant's son died, and they never had a chance to come back. They also only had 5 days of rehearsal because Robert Plant had laryngitis. The tour included the world record for attendance at an indoor event (Pontiac Silverdome), 6 sold out shows at the MSG, and 6 sold out shows at the LA Forum. That should give you an idea of just how big these guys were near the end.
Off the top pf my head. Best in my life...Buddy Rich, Bonzo, Neil Pert, keith moon, ginger baker, dave grohl. Just my 76 yr. old opinion.
Being asked my "Favorite Drum Solo" is a misnomer for me. I've got so many fav's from throughout the years and as styles of music changed so did the technology.
There's so much to like about different players that it would be, unfair?, to have a favorite.
He’s my best! So hard to say! He’s is there! 😎🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
In my estimation, Bonzo was the most fantastic rock drummer of all time and had some of the most versatile and insane solos I’ve ever experienced.
I started playing the drums because of this guy, always tried to emulate him, not a chance😂😂❤❤
He was superb. Of course many have omitted Neil Peart of Rush, who many also consider the GOAT
His coordination was something special man
Yes, you should do his "Moby Dick" solo from their legendary concert film, "The Song remains The Same", if you can find it......that film, concert and solo are all quintessential for Led Zeppelin and Bonham!
And remember, John Bonham used only a single bass and never had a double-kick pedal.....his right foot is just that quick!
Favourite Drummer I have seen live is Brian Downey (thin lizzy). I think Buddy Rich was amazing,I cannot split John and Buddy, even though they had 2 totally different styles.I read that Elvis's drummer rarely used the bass drum, just a wee Factoid, love your content, take care from a very hot, Northern Ireland..
I love Brian Downey’s drumming as well. He hovers around any list of my top 5 favorites. Neil Peart is always #1 for me but after that on any given day my order of the rest can change: Ian Paice, Bill Ward, Bonzo, Brian Downey, Andy Parker, Stewart Copeland, Cozy Powell
@@keefmack Ian is fantastic, Neil had a great car collection, I was lucky enough to see Brian 3 weeks ago,his band is very good,I have never seen 2 guitar player's both playing a Gary Moore type Gibson, but it worked.Gary got that guitar from Peter as I'm sure you know.Take care Easton..
you should check out Carl Palmer solos from 1970
He's an example of when Rock drummers were actually funky. That got lost somewhere in the 80's. His generation learned from Jazz drum teachers so a certain swing was ingrained at the start.
Bonzo, was the pioneer of rock drummer's, yes the best of all time, he study alot of jazz drummer's, one who did his homework #1 drummer of all time 🥁🥁🥁😎😇
One of the best ROCK drummers.
Ask many drummers of today who there fav and who influenced them was, usually the answer is Bonzo. If not number 1 at least in the top three. Bohnam really was the main influence of 80's bands with their bigger kits with a double bass, thing was he never used a double bass (he was just that fast nobody could replicate what he did with one). Big debate is folks who talked about his power. Which did not come from his hitting with huge power from his arms, it all came from the wrists. Also was a bit of a misnomer as Bonzo was articulate and varied his attack from soft to heavy, slow to fast or as Page used to say "Using light and shade". One has to delve deep into any drummer to see what they are made of, the live stuff and studio alike, enjoy the journey.
Who could possibly believe otherwise. Even the professor Neil Peart gave umbrage to one of the masters of the kit.
