He was the best Laker assassin during those times. And love how he'd throw air uppercuts after throwing daggers. I miss those days even though we didn't win rings back then. LOVE the last shot being against Boston.
that's why I always say Van Exel is THE BEST player I ever saw! Don't come, don't try, don't U fuckin' dare or I'll make a joke of you like he does to a guy on 0:57! I mean, if you got a player on field who has ability to hurt other player without even touching him...dude that's not just a player that is a weapon!
My favorite player of all time. My teens get mad when I be him on NBA2k because he's awesome in it. They never realized how good he was until I showed them this mixtape.
This is a fitting tribute to Mr Van Exel. He is in in my top five of players who addressed the game with such a confident zeal. One could immediately tell he loved to take control, and how he did was infectious. He had tremendous flair, but he wasn't reckless, he knew what he could do. I. don't watch the NBA anymore, but I will always have a smile when his name comes up.
Because of George Karl set him up when Nick fell to second round of the draft instead of being top 5 first round pick. So Nick made it personal to destroy that team every time they meet. Unfortunately GP had to suffer for it lol
nick da quick........... one of my alltime favorite players he was hella slept on........ handles was nasty jumper was nasty he was steph curry before steph curry ya dig
You have good taste. If you watched him then, he affected the game in so many positve ways for his team. For entertainment value, he is second to no one.
he was the original morden day point guard along with isiah thomas (pistons) and tim hardaway.... similar playing styles van exels style was kinda revolutionary in the mid 90s era
I got into basketball in about 2003 but it was always hard to find a channel on the to that would show it in the uk, but my god I'm sad I missed seeing Nick van exel play.,
Nick the Quick was so dope......he was still wet at the end of his career,I remember him killing my Sac Kings in the playoffs when he was a Maverick, dropping 40 off the bench like every night
Still my favourite player of all-time! I was a Lakers fan, and when he got traded to the Nuggets, I went with him. Been with the Nuggets ever since. My heart was never really with the Lakers...
+Kadim Nana Definately.. and he scored the ball. A lot of players can palm like that, idk. Iverson couldn't really palm a ball, but he nearly created the palming violation. The ability to palm the ball on the offensive end is completely underrated. Even defensively, the dimensions it brings to a players game is undeniable. If Jordan could not palm a ball, his logo would not exist, and he would not be "Jordan" as we know him.
+Mick Jagger Definitely. Kobe's inability to use that ability of palming does create a debate of which athlete is the better of the two. Though you also cannot argue the basketball IQ of Jordan. There are a lot of people who have desk jobs who can palm a basketball. The ability to use that in an improvised manner during a 24 second play is not something just any person can do. Very similar to the fade away, and mid range jumper from a guard in this league. It becomes lost when the coach frowns upon it. Who really eats off of the mid range game anymore? Three starters in the whole league? Footwork, everything, the game is being coached down imo. To a 'catch and shoot' 'pick and pop' off the dribble pull up game. Van Exel played point guard as a point guard. Westbrook, and half the other elite points in the league are shooting guards. Basically, simple fundamentals are being left out of coaching methods to score more, and do it quicker. I was lucky to watch Shaq play, because the center position is now lost due to lack of correct coaching. There are 6'8 players who cannot handle a ball coming straight out of highschool, because the coach does not care about fundamentals. One dribble moves. No multiple fakes, no footwork. It is just the game today. By next generation it will be a debate of other lost arts.

Often forgotten when discussing players with best handles in history. I easily rate Nick's style above many of the most discussed players with handles. His style defined the mid 90s..Iverson before Iverson, except smooth as hell.
I remember Van Exel in college @ Cincy. Dropped 30 in 1st. half during the NCAA. Then went cold. No points in second half! He was a fine pro but for sure on the All-Time Streaky Squad. I loved his swag, and game tho!
He could had easily been 5 time all star but he had bad reputation and he kept leading the league with technicals. It wasn't good look until he had 0 technicals in 97-98 season then became an all-star with Shaq, Kobe, Eddie Jones. He was mad nice wit it. Nick the Quik, Nick the Slick, Nick at Night well you pick one lol
Those Lake Show teams were dope as hell. Couldn't get pass Utah but Nick was just filthy. His giant mitts allowed him to do some of the most ridiuclous things on the court. I'd love to see him play under today's "blow the whistle if they breath on you in the perimeter" ruleset.
Nick the Quick! The one and only game I ever went to see the Lakers play was at the forum versus the Knicks, and he won it with a three pointer at the buzzer; phenomenal player!
The mid 90s was the era of superstar point guards. There were so many great ones that it was easy to overlook nick the quick. Still one of my favorite laker point guards of all time.
