    "Rock handle like Van Exel", Nick the Quick was a effortless scorer who put pressure on defenses. One of my favorite players of that time. Even tho he was a beast as a Laker. He even handled business as a Nugget and Maverick.

    The reason im a Lakers fan now. A family friend took me to a game and i was all decked out in my hometown Hawks gear my, but we just so happened to sit next to some lady who knew him at Cincinnati. He came over to her during pregame shoot around and chatted for a bit. Looked over at me and the family friend’s kid and he gave us his wrist bands. Idk if he thought we were with her, but after that, I might as well have been purple and gold my self. By the time he left, the lakers were entrenched as my team and i couldn’t change anymore.

    This channel is a great resource for the younger generation of fans.
    I still hope that the younger fans appreciate the differences in the era’s aren’t as great as some modern media narratives will suggest. Even these videos don’t do give the players their proper respect in a proper context. ~ Strictly about their basketball skills.
    I remember most of these players way back in their high school/college days as many of them are my peers and I actually had the opportunity to compete against some in various camps, High School tournaments etc.
    Most importantly, it lets the younger generation see that there have always been great talents in the NBA. Always Uber athletic guys, highly skilled guys, great shooters.
    It’s all about context and disrespect, the younger generation tends to disrespect those that came before them. Not all their fault as the media has always had a recency bias and the narratives they expound upon are based off of “Likes” and “dislikes” much like modern day social media.

He was super down to earth dude. I only fanboyed for a few minutes when I told him he was blast to watch in 2003 against the Kings. • @pheo1418
      @pheo1418 Рік тому +3

      Not sure about wasted potential, he was starting PG for the Lakers and put up numbers, got traded to Denver where he lead them in scoring over Mcdyess and had a few 50-40 pnt game's. Being drafted as late 2nd rnd Van Exel played with a attitude which was his pro and a con because he would fall out with head coaches which held him back.

  • @willdrob80

    As a Lakers fan for over thirty years now I can assure Nick was very appreciated and a fan favorite. Those teams with Eddie Jones and Cedric Ceballos (pre Shaq & Kobe) were very talented and exciting to watch. Nick just became a detriment, couldn’t control his emotions and when he lost his starting job to Fisher, he mentally checked out. Hated to see him go but he couldn’t be part of the plan anymore with the team trying to win a championship and Shaq needing to get the monkey off his back getting swept so much.

    • @leonardoyi3183
      @leonardoyi3183 Рік тому

      Nick van exel was fools gold. He looks to have every move, he can shoot. And when you see his efficiency, you want to puke. A 40% career fg shooter, and a 36% 3 point shooter. His 3 point could be valuable, but, his overall scoring efficiency is bad, and he was also a bad defender. Despite fisher not having the tools that nick had, he was a very fundamentally sound player who played defense. Fisher had an impact on the team, a positive one, despite not being an offensive threat. Fisher had a career +3.6 on off plus minus, that means his teams were 3.6 points better when he played. Van exel had a horrible -1.2.

      Technically Nick was supposed to be First Round10th pick overall but Thanks to George Karl, he didn't like NVE attitude during the pre-draft workout so George Karl put out a bad narrative to the GMs across the whole NBA about Van Exel and it affected his first round pick into second round pick at 37th. NVE made sure to make George Karl & Seattle Sonics pay for that. Unfortunately, for Gary Payton, he couldn't guard NVE at all and NVE became the notoriously known as the Sonic Killer

    I liked Eddie Jones and Elden Campbell and feel like the Glen Rice trade wasn't worth it. But I think they felt Jones had to go to make room for Kobe and Shaq supposedly asked for an outside shooter so they felt they made both of their stars happy with the trade. Glen Rice wasn't really that good with the Lakers, I think they would have been better off figuring out how to make Kobe and Jones co-exist at the 2 and 3 spot, either could play either. It is strange to imagine Nick Van Exel still being there as well....but I don't know if it would have worked since you can't have that many ball hogs on 1 team.

      Cedric Ceballos quit on that team. He went to Lake Havasu DURING THE SEASON

      People forget it wasn't Van Exel's play that got him traded it was his attitude lookup on youtube or google ''1-2-3...CANCUN - the joke that got Van Exel traded from the Lakers'' infamously known. (i see its in the video) Jerry West did make all the right moves I think they already had drafted Fisher, they traded and picked up lots of great shooters and defensive players like Glen Rice and Rick Fox Robert Horry. Eddie Jones and Kobe didn't play well together I always thought it sucked Nick and Eddie didn't get a ring.

    Imagine if Nick wasn't such a hothead & stayed with Kobe/Shaq...smh. Nick running point with Kobe at the 2 & Shaq in the middle.

    I didn't know 1 2 3 cancun was something someone legitimately said. Thought that was just a joke among the guys on TNT.
