My dudes I wish magic could have played with them as a older bigger small ball power forward type but not small lol.... But nick the quick was my guy in every video game I've ever seen him in
As the world’s biggest Van Exel fan, outside of the guy behind Van Exel TV, I just wanted to say thank you for doing this. Not only did you cover his career properly, but you nailed the spirit of his journey. Well done.
"Rock handle like Van Exel", Nick the Quick was a effortless scorer who put pressure on defenses. One of my favorite players of that time. Even tho he was a beast as a Laker. He even handled business as a Nugget and Maverick.
He and Eddie will forever be one of the most underrated talents that I enjoy watching in the 90's, I remember I was very bummed at first how they traded them away but then understood the reasons why.
Eddie was a steady 3 and D slasher ahead of its time but he could mesh with almost any team because he was a pass 1st shooting guard/SF that could catch & shoot and drive all within 2dribbles .
The reason im a Lakers fan now. A family friend took me to a game and i was all decked out in my hometown Hawks gear my, but we just so happened to sit next to some lady who knew him at Cincinnati. He came over to her during pregame shoot around and chatted for a bit. Looked over at me and the family friend’s kid and he gave us his wrist bands. Idk if he thought we were with her, but after that, I might as well have been purple and gold my self. By the time he left, the lakers were entrenched as my team and i couldn’t change anymore.
Born in the 80's, raised in the 90's - Nick Van Exel is one of my all time favorite players. While I missed out on the Showtime Lakers, the mid 90's Lakers gave me hope and long lasting memories. #RIPHearn #NickTheQuick #SteadyEddie #CedricCeballos and many many more.
Remember getting my first ever lakers jersey in 94 first year high school rocking nick the quick 9 when all other kids had big names like shaq or jordan. Van Exel was incredible!
This channel is a great resource for the younger generation of fans. I still hope that the younger fans appreciate the differences in the era’s aren’t as great as some modern media narratives will suggest. Even these videos don’t do give the players their proper respect in a proper context. ~ Strictly about their basketball skills. I remember most of these players way back in their high school/college days as many of them are my peers and I actually had the opportunity to compete against some in various camps, High School tournaments etc. Most importantly, it lets the younger generation see that there have always been great talents in the NBA. Always Uber athletic guys, highly skilled guys, great shooters. It’s all about context and disrespect, the younger generation tends to disrespect those that came before them. Not all their fault as the media has always had a recency bias and the narratives they expound upon are based off of “Likes” and “dislikes” much like modern day social media.
Nick is a good dude, when Chris Herren was trying to get off of drugs in Denver he says Nick and Antonio McDyess watched over him that whole year and wouldnt let him go out partying or be anywhere that he could get some drugs.
VanExel was my favorite 90s point guard to watch . He definitely brought the FREAKSHOW to LA with his herky jerky shake n bake style of play and his highlight assist when he wasn't breaking ankles or draining dagger 3pointers
This guy is awesome!! My Uncle knew Spud Webb when he lived in Dallas back in 2013. And he invited us out to watch the Pacers/Heat game 7 one night. And Nick showed up. He was super down to earth dude. I only fanboyed for a few minutes when I told him he was blast to watch in 2003 against the Kings. But that was one of the funnest games I ever watched just because of watching it with a real ex pro.
Nick the Quick Van Exel, Anthony Pig Miller, Cedric Ceballos, Antonio Harvey, Sedale Threat, Eddie Jones, Vlade Divac, Elden Cambell, Sam Bowie, Tony Smith, Del Harris, Chick Hearn, and Stu Lantz.. off the top of my head. I miss being 16 years old and watching this team kick ass in the early to mid 90s.
He will go down as wasted potential compared to how great his flashes of skills should he could have been. Exciting player and might have been better in today’s basketball.
Not sure about wasted potential, he was starting PG for the Lakers and put up numbers, got traded to Denver where he lead them in scoring over Mcdyess and had a few 50-40 pnt game's. Being drafted as late 2nd rnd Van Exel played with a attitude which was his pro and a con because he would fall out with head coaches which held him back.
As a Lakers fan for over thirty years now I can assure Nick was very appreciated and a fan favorite. Those teams with Eddie Jones and Cedric Ceballos (pre Shaq & Kobe) were very talented and exciting to watch. Nick just became a detriment, couldn’t control his emotions and when he lost his starting job to Fisher, he mentally checked out. Hated to see him go but he couldn’t be part of the plan anymore with the team trying to win a championship and Shaq needing to get the monkey off his back getting swept so much.
Nick van exel was fools gold. He looks to have every move, he can shoot. And when you see his efficiency, you want to puke. A 40% career fg shooter, and a 36% 3 point shooter. His 3 point could be valuable, but, his overall scoring efficiency is bad, and he was also a bad defender. Despite fisher not having the tools that nick had, he was a very fundamentally sound player who played defense. Fisher had an impact on the team, a positive one, despite not being an offensive threat. Fisher had a career +3.6 on off plus minus, that means his teams were 3.6 points better when he played. Van exel had a horrible -1.2.
I was a huge fan of his. This guy was the ultimate competitor, who had the skills to go with it. He, along with Maurice Cheeks were the 2 best point guards drafted in the 2nd round in the last 50 years.
Nick was my man, I was in my late teens when he became a Lakeland I’m a lefty too, I patterned my game after him, he was cold as ice and had epic battles against Gary Payton, his highly underrated and under appreciated
That's the best version of Dennis Johnson. When he was with the SuperSonics with crazy athleticism and that defense. Him & Gus Williams was my favorite backcourt
Ppl say dudes from the past couldn't even make the 13 seat on the bench nowadays but van ex had a whole swiss army knife worth of skills with the bball IQ to go with it which made him one of the most unpredictable players to defend ever imo. I mean the Lakers had a 1/3 of the all star team one year lol but literally had too much talent n skills for 1 ball lol.
Just imagine had Jones and Van Exel stayed and were willing to accept bench roles we could’ve won 2 or 3 more titles Jones and Van Exel on the second unit holy crap and Elden could’ve backed up Shaq
Van Exel was one of my favorite players to watch hoop, he had a playground style game. I never really like the Lakers, But Van Exel, Eddie Jones, Eventually Kobe, would have watching their games.
I always forget nick when I talk about great lakers 2nd rounders. If 3's were a huge part of the game like now, he'd be "curry" status. I was at magics first home game when unretired. He got all the time, ceb ran to Havasu, then got suspended. Actually which lead to horry.
Technically Nick was supposed to be First Round10th pick overall but Thanks to George Karl, he didn't like NVE attitude during the pre-draft workout so George Karl put out a bad narrative to the GMs across the whole NBA about Van Exel and it affected his first round pick into second round pick at 37th. NVE made sure to make George Karl & Seattle Sonics pay for that. Unfortunately, for Gary Payton, he couldn't guard NVE at all and NVE became the notoriously known as the Sonic Killer
Considering that Nick the Quick and Swingman got traded within 2 seasons of the O'Neal/Bryant pairing, the resurgence impact was minimal, unless you count Tony Battie and Ty Lue as deciding factors 🤣
I liked Eddie Jones and Elden Campbell and feel like the Glen Rice trade wasn't worth it. But I think they felt Jones had to go to make room for Kobe and Shaq supposedly asked for an outside shooter so they felt they made both of their stars happy with the trade. Glen Rice wasn't really that good with the Lakers, I think they would have been better off figuring out how to make Kobe and Jones co-exist at the 2 and 3 spot, either could play either. It is strange to imagine Nick Van Exel still being there as well....but I don't know if it would have worked since you can't have that many ball hogs on 1 team.
Kobe was developing into a-MONSTER-for the Lakers,Shaq said in his bio when Kobe got on the roster Eddie was looking over his shoulder, cause he knew that young-LION-was hungry. LOL.
Maybe if Van Exel never made the Cancun comment he wouldn't have been traded. Eddie though I agree, Glen Rice was a disappointment and ended up leaving anyway, couldn't handle being the third wheel like Eddie would've.
NVE was one of the best individual players of his era. I watched him play with the Nuggets. He was very competitive individually, but he didn't make his team better. He was also pretty volatile emotionally which wore on his coaches and teammates. When be was on, there were few better.
Wasn't underrated and I was a Laker fan that grew up in Southern California when he came up. Every 90s player except about 5 of em are underrated now according to UA-cam content creators. Some of us were alive then. Just give props to guys and stop calling everyone underrated.
Nick had to go after the Cancun comment, killed the locker room. Didn't know Jerry didn't like his lack of assertiveness in demanding the starting job, thats something that would be lauded by most FOs today.
NVE was great. He was a leader, but a bad one. He could do anything on the court, but he was also a coach killer. He was a competitor, but mainly as an individual. His teams didn't win regularly. He always seemed like he was unhappy. It's too bad, because when he was on he was unstoppable.
It's very interesting because Van EXEL is way better than the point guard the Lakers won with.damn I forget his name at this moment lol I just had it on the top of my tongue 😛 ohhhhhhhh Derek Fisher..yeah Nick is better than fisher but fisher was more a system guy and did hit clutch shots and big shots.but no doubt Nick the quick is way better in every area of the point guard and basketball in general in my opinion.i thought the Lakers could have won with Nick and Eddie and Cedric and Kobe and shaq.all four was an all-star at the same time and all five at some point for the Lakers and just needed another year together overall in my opinion.they could have won with Any mediocre big man power forward next to all of those all stars let alone anyone that was decent to good.
People forget it wasn't Van Exel's play that got him traded it was his attitude lookup on youtube or google ''1-2-3...CANCUN - the joke that got Van Exel traded from the Lakers'' infamously known. (i see its in the video) Jerry West did make all the right moves I think they already had drafted Fisher, they traded and picked up lots of great shooters and defensive players like Glen Rice and Rick Fox Robert Horry. Eddie Jones and Kobe didn't play well together I always thought it sucked Nick and Eddie didn't get a ring.
he was definitely my favorite player growing up as a Lakers fan after magic and them retired I was so mad The Lakers traded him it took me a while to like Derick fisher 😂😂😂 I always said that should have been nick smh🤷
Nick Van Exel and Eddie Jones will both go down as massively underrated players in NBA history

I became a Lakers fan Because of Nick The Quick.. I remember that game winner against Boston to this very day.
lol I even remember it was raining in LA that night.
His "one two three Cancun " remark did him in 😂😂
But it became a catchphrase.
Great channel! Nick is one of my favorite players of the 90s. Elden "Easy" Campbell next?

Antonio McDyess should be on your list as well. 6’10” with a 47” vertical before the injury
VanExel was my favorite 90s point guard to watch . He definitely brought the FREAKSHOW to LA with his herky jerky shake n bake style of play and his highlight assist when he wasn't breaking ankles or draining dagger 3pointers
Nick was a so underrated NBA player
For sure would’ve been a superstar in this generation.
There were two jerseys that I had growing up. A Rockets Hakeem Olajuwon jersey and a Lakers Nick Van Exel jersey.
This guys consistency is crazy

The size of his head in his childhood picture is hilarious. Also, the college 3 point line back then was so short it’s ridiculous
