  • This simple tutorial shows how to remap an image using the uv_coords attribute of the image shader to produce an abstract patterned distortion effect.
A written tutorial with scene file can be found here:

I used this method to create the planet Jupiter with slow moving cloud layers. It's almost too easy this way ;)

what is the correct way to apply BLUR to an image - ie: by distorting UVs - in Arnold?

Interesting. This seems to basically imitate a 2D displacement effect in a compositor like After Effects, using another image as a displacement map. Is there anything unique here by doing it in 3D?

You can technically do this remapping of one image with values from another in AE, other software like Nuke, or Maya w/o Arnold. But doing it within Maya means it can be driven by and drive other aspects of the scene, without rendering the remap elsewhere.

I wonder what the texture used looks like, it is not shown or included in the scene file. Seems important to achieve that look.

It is mixture of oil and acrylic but you can use any texture you want.

@@LeeGriggs would you please help me with this ? it's an awesome effect and I loved it. thanks for the tutorial.
I'm having an issue which after adding the ramp node, and choosing the RYGB color, I get some distortion or stretching on my image before tweaking the noise or adding another texture to color offset. how can I fix this ?

Is there any particular reason you chose those colors for the ramp node ? What effect does the ramp color have ? Thanks for videos as always !! Super helpful

This is what a UV coordinates map looks like, red for x, green for y which means black in 0,0 and yellow in 1,1. Blue is 0,0,1 RGB so it’s the same as black here. Just google ST map, it looks the same.

@Lee Griggs With a pop filter, and if you go with XLR Option you need an audio interface like BEHRINGER Audio Interface or Focusrite Scarlett Solo. This would be a p erfect setup!
