Chad God bless you for this. I've been reading blogs and watching video for the longest time and no one has explained it in a better and simpler way. This is the first video that makes complete sense and removes all confusion. I'm working on my first windsor chair and after doing doing the tricky bending, spindles and legs - my project was halted because I was stuck here. Thank you so much. Keep shining my friend!!
Your demonstration is an excellent guide for understanding the mathematical derivations of each angle and how the angles are used for correctly drilling the holes in the seat.
I stank at geometry and math fifty years ago and I still stink at geometry and math today. This is a helpful video, thank you. However, like a lot of the woodworking content on YT, this is heavy on sophistication and calculation. Wood butchers like me just want basic know-how so we can have fun. Not looking to win any awards, just make gifts for people. The angle jig at the end was over the top, but if I just make one that is basic, it will work for the two-handed high torque, high power, slow rpm drill my forstner bits are in

I've been trying to do symmetrical legs in the bottom of half round logs and it's a challenge.

Chad, this video is outstanding. Now I can see how it all comes together. You worried me when you used the drill press because my cheap table top model would never work for a project like this BUT that jig is fantastic. It looks easy to make and use. Thanks as always. Now I just have to see when I can schedule making a bench into my plans for the upcoming year. It’s going to be a busy one.

Hi Chad - Using the $1.00 protractor, I believe the correct sight angle to use for the rear legs (from your reference line) would be 90 - 34 = 56 degrees.
Glad someone else noticed that, too! I was starting to get confused, especially looking at his front and rear sight lines drawn that are only a couple degrees different. I was planning on making a small chair that is only one degree different in the rake, resultant, and SL angles as his rear legs, and the sight lines on my sketch angled up more than his. Thought I was figuring the SL angle wrong.
I have never used my cheapy drill press much, but after watching this video realized the bed on it has a degree indicator for tilting. Just have to loosen a bolt underneath and tilt the zero point on the bed until it's inline with the degree of tilt needed. I was really surprised to see that feature on it.

Thanks so much for sharing this video. Is there a formula that gives the length deferents for the front and rear legs? I am assuming that the rear legs are longer because of the 16 degree rake to get a level platform or chair seat?
Also to get the leg to fit flat on the floor I would just cut the bottoms to the same splay and rake as the top right? This is my first woodworking project in 30 years just got a new saw and wanted to build a stand for it. Thanks again for sharing.

First of all, I’m a big fan of yours. But I have a comment and a question. Isn’t this a compound angle. I did it so many times before when I build stools. What I usually do it I tilt the drill press bed and the I use a sacrificial wood block to raise the piece then I have my compound. angel with no geometry and measurements.

I cut my finger off in a car accident when i was 17. Doctor said i would lose 80% use of my whole hand. I only lost 50% of my one finger. NOTHING will hold me back.
