The Sandman: 25 Things You Missed

- Опубліковано 22 тра 2024
- When it comes to comic books being adapted for the big screen, Neil Gaiman’s fan favorite series The Sandman has been a long time coming. A movie adaptation had been in the works for some time, but struggled to find the light of day. Thankfully The Sandman finally made its way to screens in episodic form on Netflix and we are all the better for it, as it is arguably one of the best comic adaptations of recent times, and stays (mostly) true to the source material. It even has some pretty fun and quirky Gaimanisms in there too! Because of how closely it sticks to the source material, the show makes a number of references to the text, but also leaves some things fairly quiet. It is also packed full of Easter Eggs and hidden call backs that you may have missed on the first viewing.
That’s why we thought we would comb through the sand and look for some hidden dreamy treasures as we uncover 25 or so things you might have missed. That includes the true meaning and powers behind some of the major objects in the show, the comic book fate of some particular characters, references to the world of DC and some of its biggest locations, some hidden setups for a likely second season, some references to major DC villains (and how they relate to the Justice League), references and links to other characters, comics and shows, some hidden symbolism and just some general pieces of fun trivia that you might not have known about the comic book, show and the characters that make up The Sandman. So without further ado, these are 25 things you might have missed in The Sandman!
What did you make of the series? Do you want to see a second season? How does it compare to the comics? Any we missed? Let us know in the comments below and make sure to subscribe today for all this and more.

Which chapter of The Sandman is your favorite?
its hard to choose! but probably 2. I love watching him travel through dreams and choosing which gifts to give the Fates. Goldie is sooo cute. I love the other wordly chapters and seeing his beautiful realm.
The fight btn Lucifer morningstar and sand man ....I just luv having hope
Hey Screen Rant 🙂Could yall PLEASE ask Ryan George if he could consider doing an Edge Of Tomorrow (Live, Die, Repeat) Pitch Meeting? I've spent the past week binge watching EVERY Pitch Meeting and today i just realized that he didnt do Edge Of Tomorrow 😞It's one of my fav movies and im POSITIVE Ryans humour would do SO WELL with this one 😀PLEASE CONSIDER
The Corinthian and John Dee
Six, and the beginning and ending so beautiful. The concept of Finian's Green.
I could be wrong, but I never interpreted "The Collector's" as actually being part of a formal "group", per se. I interpreted them as using the word "collector' as a euphemism for "serial killer" and the convention was just like most other conventions where folks attend just due to their common interest, not due to being part of an actual organization.
Watch the Episode again. It was an invite only invent, the organizers are actual serial Killers and they sent invitation to only people that are in the line
@@drenephorian5943 I wasn't disputing that they were part of a community that networked. I was just saying I'm not entirely sure that the term "Collectors" was anything other than a euphemism to describe what they did rather than being a formal title for an official organization by that title. Though I don't consider it 100% clear either way, and it was referenced that The Corinthian inspired them.
"Collectors" was inspired by a 1965 film called "The Collector" about a serial murderer. It's referenced within the comic as a favorite film of one of the killers-"For the first time, I am understood."
Yeah I agree. They’re all serial killers who collect things from their victims, but apart from the people who planned the event it seemed like there wasn’t an overall organization. They’re simply a group of enthusiasts and it was invite only because it had to be for their anonymity and the only way they sent the invites was by tracking one another.
26) All the end credits are layed upon art by Dave McKean who did the cover art for the Sandman comics. Gaiman dedicated the 10th volume, and the final chapter of the saga, to McKean, and its nice to Gaiman includes his long timefirend and collaborator in this new incarnation of the story as well.
The Dave McKean art was always unearthly and fantastic. Really great it features in the end credits.
I love how they do Dream going WTF to the Corinthian's mouth eyes like Dream didn't literally design him with those features
I mean, if I saw my old "masterpiece art" from high school 130 years hence I'd also be revolted. XD
@This is Lukas that's a great perspective! Lol
Never thought of it like that.
Actually, in the comics Shakespeare wrote two plays for the Sandman: Midsummer Night's Dream and The Tempest.
I didn’t realize how much I would love the sand man
same
In the books, Lucien mentioned to Vasylli that the last time he lost a book, the continents weren't in their present shapes - Implying that he's been a librarian for more than 10,000 years, so Lucien's life as a raven, was some time before that.
In the Dreaming comic series (that’s not canon anymore), Lucien is revealed to have been Adam.
Or she just knows it without having been there…
The "Lucifer opening that bar" storyline wasn't scrapped, it happens much later after he leaves Hell and so of course it wasn't included in the show. I'm glad they didn't use the same actors or confirmed any crossover because that Lucifer series is, despite being fun in it's own way, nothing compared to the comics it's actually based on and only uses interesting characters and concepts for a series that always felt to me like a weird supernatural "CSI LA"...
One thing I was grateful for was how they made Unity and Desire's relationship consensual. I hope in the second season they bring up Dream's former flames, Nada AND Calliope, a greek entity of whom he had a child with. I won't spoil any more with those who haven't listened to the audiobooks, but LISTEN TO THE AUDIOBOOKS lol
I'm on Act ll of the audiobook and I'm hooked!
If I'm not mistaken, there is a yet unreleased bonus episode that deals precisely with Calliope :)
@@doomsdayoption WHAT
There's a new ep w calliope
@@Party_Pineapple yeah it was released yesterday
When I started this show I thought it was trying too hard and over packing episodes but I stuck around and wound up falling in love. Gotta buy the comics now
This actor seriously needs to play Robert Smith of the Cure in a bio-pic :D
Not doing so DOES seem a waste of the greatest gift nature gave him.
Sandmans look is literally based off Robert Smith
@@joemorris-bunting1619 morpheus appearance is actually based off neil gaiman himself and young peter murphy
The friendship between Dream and Bob every 100 years encounter, bravo bravo
My highlight was every scene with princess Barbie and Martin Tenbones in the Land
I really hope they do A Game of You in Season 2.
Loved all the Silver Age images of the Flash's Rogues Gallery at Gault's monitor room in Jed's dream (like Pied Piper, etc)
24: I'm pretty-much sure that, in the letters pages of one of the comics issues, Gaiman confirmed that the Sandman's aesthetic was based on Robert E Smith of The Cure, rather than himself.
Chapter 3 Chapter 5 and Chapter 6 was so good I really really hope there is a second season
THERE IS GONNA BE SEASON 2!!
@@micahpipkins8943 Not confirmed yet.
Nice vid and IMO like Good Omens, these works needed the evolution of streaming series. Movies are too short, and television pre-streaming wouldn't have allowed for the visuals and creative freedom. And Sandman is outstanding bring on Season 2!
The most interesting thing to me was that ghosts can reside in Dreaming.
He's not the first one right? I'm sure other ghost tried to do that 🙁
Matthew is technically a ghost too. But he allowed to stay, he also offered rose a place. I assume too many would corrupt the dream world
I think the rule is you can stay in the dreaming when you die while sleeping. Would fit with Matthew dying while in a coma
There’s another sandman before the Kirby one, 1938 sandman, the dude with the gas mask and the sleeping gas gun. So Gaiman’s is the 3rd volume, not second. But the only commercially successful one, I believe.
The Simon & Kirby Sandman of the 1940’s in Adventure Comics was technically “commercially successful,”
IMHO it sold better than the early 1970’s Kirby Sandman.
Although Neil’s Sandman comics certainly made their own mark and were a complete game changer in their impact.
I didn’t mind the changes from the comics and the show, but I wish they kept in brute and glob or dream saving rose from Funland and the final showdown between dream and the Corinthian.
episode 6, at 48:03, left corner of the screen, half framed, there is the poster of "...And the Madness of the Crowds", a film that exists within Sandman's universe. That poster appears in The Sandman issue 17
There are no copyright issues, they just want to distance this from mainstream DC because it's earned the right to be a stand alone property now. All the DC references were from a time when they expected it to only work as part of the existing multiverse but now it's stronger without being tied down by DC references.
You forgot to mention that the Fates (Furies, Kindly Ones, Three Witches, whatever you want to call them) also starred in their own horror comic for DC in the 70s called The Witching Hour. They were horror hosts like Cain and Abel were for the Houses of Mystery and Secrets.
The two serial killers mentioned by name not attending (The Family Man and the Bogeyman) are from Hellblazer and Swamp Thing respectively. The Family Man is trying to kill Constantine who finds his magic and trickery less effective against a ruthless killer. The Bogeyman is a killer who remembers the eyes of every person he's killed, and is killed by The Swamp Thing. I don't know what the timings are - The Family Man Hellblazer story predates Sandman by a few months I think.
Also the "Classic Sandman" is itself a failed reboot of the OG character Wesley Dodds. Who was a gasmask wearing detective. Off of the sucess of Neil Gaiman's Sandman they did a reboot of that in the early 90s called Sandman Mystery Theatre - which references Dream of the Endless, but is ultimately a noir crime drama.
And I thought I was an original reader from the time? Thanks Prof.
I Hope Netflix gets to allow a full run of this...if they are still financially viable (their management has really screwed over A LOT of people...and it is only going to get worse)...but considering they are cutting Directly into the viewing base with the final season of Locke and Key being released a week after this............Sandman should have been a 1-3 episodes a week release, and it definitely does the series a disservice to release them all at once like this. Netflix already has shown they will do Weekly releases....but their algorithm seriously has it backwards on which type of series to do it with.
This is a Tentpole series that should have been released AFTER the final season of Locke and Key to give that audience something to chew on....bc THIS is that thing.
All this right here is irrelevant. The sandman is the biggest streaming show on the planet. Show was phenomenal and held up really good in terms of statistics.
Lucien wasn't created by Gaiman-he actually lifted it from a nearly forgotten DC mystery anthology series called "Tales of Ghost Castle," where Lucien was the host who introduced each tale a la the Crypt Keeper. A lot of the characters in the first two collections actually came about this way (Hippolyta Hall was the Fury, daughter of Earth-2's Wonder Woman, and her husband Hector was the son of Hawkman and Hawkgirl). They tried at first to keep Sandman consistent with DC continuity, but that was quickly abandoned and the story went its own way with occasional nods at the rest of the DC universe (Superman and Batman both show up in "The Wake").
The idea of Lucifer owning a piano bar most likely hasn't been abandoned... it just hasn't happened yet.
Two nits: the name of Lucifer's companion is Mazikeen and is pronounced with a long e in the third syllable; the Sandman's friend is named Hob Gadling, not Galding.
Played by Stephen Fry (pronounced Steven, not Steph-en)
Wonderfully done
Nice breakdown
As a long time fan of the original comics, I was very pleased with this adaptation. Having Gaiman involved insured that it stayed true to his vision. I really hope this gets more seasons.
Sturridge/Dream and Matthew reminds me of Vampire Hunter D and his hand being. Wonder which came first. Loved the series, I am hope.
I feel like the only person who thought ep 5 was a pale imitation of the original. It was fine but not nearly as sadistic and did a poor job showing how John was harming the rest of the world. The Dolls House storyline was WAY better, I loved the Walkers and Fiddlers Green and the Cereal convention. And ep 6 is a masterpiece; they melded two of my favorite issues and two of my favorite characters in one FANTASTIC episode.
Either way, NETFLIX PLEASE RENEW!
johns motives made more sense in the series i think, he was lied to a lot by his mother, he has lots of power, he makes everyone tell the truth, in the comics wasnt it just 'ill make you mad, and if i stop, ill rule your world to --> im just having fun now and making yall mad', i do still think it should have shown more of the outside world, and it removed one of my favourite snippets with DINO THE DINOSOUR tho
Interesting video. Thanks
Good vid and research.
Also, the character Lyta - who was impregnated in her dream - is the daughter of Wonder Woman and Steve Trevor. 'Lyta' is short for Hippolyta, the queen of the Amazons - the mother of Wonder Woman.
I really hope there is a Thanksgiving style family dinner with all the Endless in Season 2.
If they follow the comic it should be one of the first scenes.
You overlooked one of the most significant eggs in the story. In fact it's one directly connected to the Sandman's eventual demise. It is that Lyta Hall is the daughter of Wonder Woman and is the one that begins the storyline of the Fates going after him and destroying him. Not to mention her son becomes the new Sandman. I detail this in my own video about Lyta Hall on my channel.
I loved it and this series alone was worth my Netflix subscription this year as i haven't really watch anything else on Netflix recently.... my last bing watch was "you"
Me and my family are gonna be watching episode 6 tomorrow! Chapter 5 got me puzzled and shocked in many ways😭😭😭
boringgggg
Good to know
Episode 5 was terribly boring as hell in that diner but episode 6 was perfect.
Love this video, but mate, How did you just pronounce the legendary actor, author and scholar Stephen Fry’s name?!?! Again not taking the piss, love the hosting but 😳
I love Stefan Fry! 😂
Very droll. It’s an easy mistake to make. Fry isn’t exactly a household name in the US. I’ll let that sarky comment go.
@@Hellserch no, but the dead meme "Steven with a ph" should be, so Patrice should know how to pronounce Stephen
1:08 Both WW84 and The Sandman are Warner Bros. properties. There is no "COPYRIGHT ISSUE" here.
Lucifer opening the piano bar isn't scrapped. That hasn't happened yet. Lucifer doesn't quit ruling Hell until the storyline Season of Mists. Sometimes I think you guys get little details wrong just for the comments. It's very off-putting.
Really had fun with the adaptation, I liked the episode in hell. Great Video, thx 👍 hope they are doing more seasons
The Corinthians mouth is so satisfying to watch. He has a nice teeth.
This looks pretty interesting
It's REALLY REALLY good! Especially if you know the comics
good real good , i like this channel!
Can't wait for 2nd season!!
I had no idea this was dc until i saw or heard rather constantine and astra's name then i went str8 to google...i like it
I don’t know why you would say they don’t have the copyright. Warner Brothers is posted all over the opening credits, and they have exclusive rights to all tv and film adaptations of DC comics.
I think there might be plans to do a proper constantine project so they weren’t allowed to use the male version we all know. At least that’s what I heard from another video
It's different between TV and films though. And WB don't like having multiple versions of the same character at once
@@BlobsterBuddy The “Crisis On Infinite Earths” storyline from The Flash says otherwise.
Lucifer and Maze alone are two different versions of the same character on WB shows produced for Netflix.
Super cool 😎 video
Some odd pronunciation choices but okay
What on earth are you talking about at the end. This is a Warner Brother television production. It shows that on the credits of every episode. The Sandman comic was published by Vertigo Imprint which is/was a subsidiary of DC comics. DC comics has been ownered by warner since the early 70's.
You are awesome 😎
I love this. The sandman is perfect
You're the man Patrice
purrrrfect:D
A little bit late to the party, but there are some things to talk about:
1 - The Mask is inspired by the Wesley Dodds Sandman, a character from an old Detective Pulp Comic, that Gaiman got the challenge to reimange the whole theme.
2 - The whole ending with Lucifer is a Cliffhanger leading to the Season of Mists arch, where Lucifer relinquishes hell and gives its key to Dream. This will lead to the whole bar opening.
3 - The Dreams of Jed Walker is also a reference to the comic. Lyta's Hector Hall is the first Sandman and he is the one stuck in a dream state, revisiting his accomplishments as a hero.
Please don’t use the swooshing sound again in your videos when you pop in or images pop in. It’s all I could hear and was really annoying. But I did really enjoy the video I just couldn’t concentrate because of that sound. Keep making videos you’re doing great:)
It IS still a Warner Bros production🤓. Or what did you mean by your last comment Thank God it wasn’t made by Warner Bros🤔?
i wondered that too 😄 🤔
Hob “Galding”? Jeez 😡
I know! Way to butcher the names.
Ironic that Gaiman says he based his Lucifer character on David Bowie, when in the TV series, the character who most resembles Bowie, is The Corinthian!
Gaiman based it on a very young Bowie when he had a curly perm and played folk music.
@@cherijoseph7819 but don't you think The Corinthian resembles an 80s Bowie? With the glasses and the spiky blond hair?
@@Noelito40 I talking about sixties Bowie. With those sunglasses he looks like any number of 80s musicians.
@@cherijoseph7819 I know what you meant. Go watch Bowie at Live Aid and tell me that's not The Corinthian you are looking at.
@@Noelito40 Honey, I watched Live Aid, live in Philadelphia when I was in college saw Bowie the same summer on The Modern Love tour. That era was the closest Bowie's stage persona looked like a regular pop star. Millions of men dressed like that. There was no specific inspiration but the era itself.
True! The diner episode was like GOT levels!
Cool 😎
the kid was watching superman with static shock
I agree, episode 5 was a masterpiece
Hey Screen Rant 🙂Could yall PLEASE ask Ryan George if he could consider doing an Edge Of Tomorrow (Live, Die, Repeat) Pitch Meeting? Gadling. Gadling. _Not_ Galding. Gadling. Gad. Ling.
I'm surprised you didn't talk about Lyta Hall being wonder woman's daughter
Yess
What copyright issues would prevent them from calling the stone in WW84 anything? Doctor Destiny is an old JL villain and he and his stone predate Sandman by years.
the show was made by warner bros, netflix only put the money
This reminded me alot of American Gods
Same creator (if you didn't know)
I was thinking the same thing, where is Hades?
Is Ma-zik-een not Maziken
I just hope Doctor Destiny will be in a future justice league movie
Who tf is Hob GALDING?
When Lucicer Vs Dream... I thing Anti live is an Easter egg will be the scary one in the DCU and Hope is Superman...
The diner episode was definitely the best
Holy crap that swishing/zipping sound effect is so distracting.
Episode 5-6 true masterpiece 🫶🏻
I have seen 5 times so far
How does the series make John's lineage a mystery in any way, shape or form? It's made very clear that his father is, in fact, Roger Burgess. Did we watch the same series?
Wasn't John Dee's father in the comics Ruthven Sykes and not Roderick Burgess?
Stefan Fry?
How is this 25 missed things ?
All this video did was give a bit of extra info on stuff that were clearly shown and said in the show.
At this point i swear channels are just reusing titles cuz of the Alg and would fill in the video with anything.
I agree the best episode of the show is 24/7 or the Diner episode
you Can See action figures of BATMAN,WONDERWOAMN & FLASH IN Jeds dream headquarters where there is nightmare
Chapter 8 is lit🔥🔥
Why is there a shoveling sound?
It made me pause the video a look around my house!!
Like every 10 or 20 seconds!!
@@jacobocota lol it's the editing wipe "sound effect". Probably not really necessary unfortunately.
You missed that that The Family Man was a character from Hellblazer
Stephen Fry is pronounced like Steven.
You know your stuff man. Good
I can't do the show...I'd rather re read the comics
Must not have watched the show Lucifer if you can't pronounce Mazikeen correctly and it's Gadling. Pronounced like Josh Gad's last name with "ling" on the end.
A whole lot of comic shows and movies are getting axed. Hopefully this'll last
Does anyone know why dream never ate?
I'd like to join the Cereal Killers
It was a wish stone
"That was too drastic". Yes, tone it down a notch please. I almost had a feeling.
... & you forget DESIRE
That's not what "immaculate conception" means.
Tell me, where historically does this concept hail from? I bet my American friend that you don’t know.
