About 'Dream of a Thousand Cats':
Late one night, a Siamese cat holds a gathering of other cats to tell her story about her encounter with Morpheus. The cat dreamed of meeting Morpheus, in the form of a black cat, and begged him for a solution. Morpheus presented her with a parallel universe in which cats were the dominant species over humans until they fought back by dreaming, turning them into the cats mankind sees them as they are today. Upon finishing her story, the Siamese cat urges the other cats to perform the same enlightenment to which they will reclaim their status as the rulers of the earth.
    About 'Calliope':
Struggling author Richard Madoc visits Erasmus Fry, an elderly former writer who has imprisoned a Greek muse named Calliope in his house. Fry transfers ownership of Calliope the Muse to Madoc, who discovers that he can take inspiration from her.
Calliope sends a desperate plea to Morpheus, her former husband, who she has not seen since the tragic death of their son Orpheus. Upon receiving her plea and learning of what has happened to her, Morpheus becomes enraged and confronts Madoc. When he refuses to release Calliope, Morpheus punishes Madoc with an uncontrollable stream of ideas.
Madoc soon frees Calliope, who asks Morpheus to lift his curse of Madoc. Morpheus lifts the curse of too many ideas, but Madoc finds himself unable to remember Calliope, Morpheus, or any of his ideas. Calliope vows to make sure what happened to her doesn't happen to anyone else. She and Morpheus share a tender goodbye with her expressing hope that sometime in the future, she can visit him in his realm and they'll be able to grieve their son properly.

I love this adaptation! This episode was great! I appreciate that the story of Calliope was not centered on her abuse but on her strength and dignity. Even with everything Ric did to her, he was the one who was portrayed as small and weak.

The depiction of both stories to me were spot on. Translated brilliantly and appropriately for television. If we do get more seasons, I wonder how they're going to do those conversations between Dream and Orpheus.... the whole Orpheus saga will be so interesting to watch.
I loved the chemistry between Tom and Melissanthi. Though a brief encounter, you feel the emotions and the love they had/ have for each other. Tom is just such an intense actor. He doesn't need to do much to display a huge array of emotions on his face.

I felt that the Kindly Ones were reassuring her with giving her a glimpse of his temple.
I guess I took ‘grieve’ to mean ‘discuss this like adults, & perhaps find a way to visit him and give him solace.’
But then I fully admit that is partly due to my need for poor Orpheus to find a way to finally live or die.
    Great breakdown.

You did pronounce Naxos correctly. Also I don't know if you noticed but Calliope is played by a Greek actress. It was a nice touch and a surprise that finally someone pronounced greek words and names correctly in a movie. Also "oneiro" means dream and Oneiros is referring to the Dream person

Just wanted to add a comment about the ending. The addition of the line from Calliope to Dream that she wants to "visit him in the Dreaming and mourn their son": for people completely unfamiliar with the comics it was brilliant way to foreshadow. In one line it told an entire story. (BTW I am totally obsessed now! I may be behind but after binging the entire series in 1 day I ordered the 1st 2 volumes of the comics from Amazon and cannot wait for them to arrive!)

You are probably going to make another update on The Sandman how Neil Gaiman said on twitter that despite the show has done well on Netflix... it is not a guarantee for a season 2... the show is apparently pretty expensive to make and that could factor into the development of future seasons if approved.

Thanks for the full breakdown. I was confused too about her line at the end and I'm sure he never told her, maybe to spare suffering...or maybe to spare himself more conflict. Can you imagine knowing that your son is half dead as a disembodied head and your husband never told you? I'm sure they'll explore in S2 or 3 and hope to see more of Dream and Calliope. Also, they'll want Jenna to come back very soon since she was in the press tours.
Btw...does Calliope knows that her son is a talking head in the comics? Because I cannot imagine a mother leaving her son in that state for millennia.

    • @BobaTalks
      @BobaTalks  Рік тому +5

Thanks for watching! Yeah I mentioned towards the end that Calliope went to visit her son from time to time on Naxos which added to a bit of the speculation of her using the word "grieve" cos it could infer that she doesn't know in this version/adaptation perhaps. But she may very well know at the same time in this adaptation, but used the word anyway since they never processed what happened to him as a couple :)

I'm so glad they adapted Thousand Cats, as it is my favorite issue in the comics, I was really worried they wouldn't adapt it, but THEY DID.
I really love that story because religion is a huge part of my growing up, and I saw that as an analogy for religion. These religious people tell each other there is something afterlife, and if you do good you'll get great things in heaven and etc. Now if pursuing that wish fills them with hope and purpose, and in a way they are happier because of it, makes good and moral people out of them, so pursuing that, even if it never comes, may still be fulfilling. You may never get the destination you want but the journey to get there is arguably more important
    Calliope was also really amazing.

It all gave me the vibe like Lucifer was impersonating Dream to make some chaos in the mortal world using cats, but he never really calls himself Dream so he never directly lies, I seem to remember that even though he deceives he never really lies directly.

When Orpheus goes to see Aunty Death, she warns him that the only way he can enter Hades is if she promised to not "take" him. In other words, the only way Orpheus could die, should she make the agreement, would be for Dream to kill him, as the parent who is of the Endless. Orpheus, desperate to get his beloved back, agreed. I have zero knowledge of the source material, so I speak only as someone who has seen the Netflix series. For me, the sets and story were excellent, and the cast was for the most part pretty good...except for Tom Sturridge! I didn't get any sense of power or regality from him. To me, his voice sounds wimpy! Compare the depth of his low-spoken voice with that of David Thewlis (John Dee/Doctor Destiny). Thewlis is a brilliant actor and when he speaks under his breath, you can hear the menace, you can hear the power, Sturridge just sounds weak and warbling. (It reminded me of Noel Fielding's character in The IT Crowd, a comedy!)
I think the British actors, in particular, were top-notch, Thewlis, Dance, Howel-Baptiste, to name abut a few, and I would love to see Olivia Colman in there. There must be a meaty role for her!

Kinda agree with you, I feel like he had potential but also gives me twilight vibes 🤢. Bit over skinny broody tall white dark haired men who can't emote or communicate 😒

forget the cats. it's not about the cats. it's about the power of dreams and the powers of dream (morpheus). it's expanding the lore of dream's abilities right under our noses

Night of a Thousand Cats was absolutely AWESOME. Calliope was meh. The acting was fine but the pacing/editing and a lot of unwarranted cringe woke dialogue ruined it for me.
