Really neat theyre using the FFG Rogue Trader system, right down to the Koronus expanse in the Calixis Sector. The FFG games were the peak of 40k RPG's
Admittedly, as soon as you said the combat system/flow is easier than in the Pathfinder games, I got really excited. As a huge C/TRPG fan who unfortunately does not have much tabletop gaming/DMing experience, I really appreciate games that offer depth without blindsiding you off the bat with a myriad of rules/systems. I felt Wasteland 2 & 3 in particular handled combat superbly. I'm looking forward even more to Rogue Trader now!
Quite a lot of characteristics and skills to pick from, looks like there are going to be many ways to build your character. At least I know what I'm picking - psyker, so Adept it is!
For what I could understand of this developer's past releases, they seem to be very much following a building up process, when they are basically used to add features, and sometimes even pretty core mechanics, incrementally over a semi-solid foundation. They also managed to be effective, if not super-fast, with fixes for bugs and balancing problems after the "final" release of their titles. So, promising premises, and a promising foundation according to the alpha-review: let's hope for another fun and engaging RPG in the not so distant future. Thanks for your videos!
I love turn based games and pathfinder is in my top 5 games of all time so I can not wait for this, baldurs gate coming also, it's great to see turn based strategy games getting so much love recently, long may it continue.
Very glad to see the other Rogue Trader features looked into, hopefully the streamlined character progression lets them really refine the void combat and resource mechanics!
Thank you for clarifying that the space portions are in very early stages because some of the other previews didn't seem to get the same memos, or they just didn't mention it and I was getting worried.
I'm really glad they toned down the management simulation bit. I've played the start of WotR literally dozens of times and absolutely loved the turn based combat up until I conquered Drezen and became horribly bored by the kingdom management slog.
I knew at least one of your posts today would be RT related. Did not suspect all 4. Amazing work as always. I'm holding off to the Beta for now. Because I'm already in 3 Early Access games, and that's 2 too many. But this does look like Owlcat is well on its way to something special here.
I'm really excited for space exploration - when I first saw the parchment map in the trailers I thought they'd exclusively be reusing the world map from Pathfinder.
I hope there will be a lot of upgrades, research and management to be done to the ship. :D Would love to see crew management (talking about ship crew a bit like Pirates Gold), with their needs for food, payment, etc. *just me wanting to be a space pirate in wh40K*
FWIW in this setting there is definitely no technological research (it’s like the dark ages: tech is mostly going down, not up). But in the TTRPG version of this game it is definitely possible to scavenge ancient/alien technology and retrofit it to your ship. And crew management is also a feature: you can do things like purchase expanded living quarters for the crew to improve morale, or alternatively turn dead crew members’ bodies into mindless automatons to keep them working which somewhat degrades morale! Not to mention with it being manned by a crew of 10,000 serfs you get things like cults springing up.
"Handling companions trying to kill each other" sounds awesome, reminiscent of baldur's gate I wish wrath had this in fighting pop up more. People are way too chill with each other.
Looking forward to this game, I love WH40K universe. Combat seems like its "easy to learn, but hard to master" (talking about the ability usage). Very very interesting.... p.s Looks very good even if it is only in Alpha stage, although I suppose they will have to work a little bit more on the animations (looking primarily at the meele Charge skill for example).
I'm so excited for this game! Chapter 2 sounds like it's all about making everyone know who's in charge. At 4:17, there's a welcoming party to maybe show respect to the player even while 'incognito'. I like that, makes you feel more important than most. I'm glad this game is turn-based. When a good portion of your enemies have guns, it sounds hard to have cover mechanics in real-time mode. My imagination came true! Space exploration! Can't wait to get bigger ships! Hopefully different ships have different interiors. A bigger bridge, more rooms to explore, etc. Warp travel random events sounds fun! Ship combat looks kinda weird to me. I've played alot of the Battlefleet Gothic Armada so ships not moving while taking your turn is funny looking. It does look like you can command a fleet in the future. Looking forward to managing my trade empire. Personally hoping it's at least in similar depth to the Pathfinder games. I wanna see the choices you pick gets shown by the way what your empire looks like. Good impressions so far for an alpha, can't wait for the full release!
I might buy this because it might be the first Owlcat game I can at least finish. I tend to get stuck in their Pathfinder games. Plus, it is an add plus I like Warhammer 40k.
My hope is that they limit or remove trash mobs. That was one of my biggest issues with kingmaker and wrath. I much prefer fights that are crafted and add to the story in some way, either directly to the main story or adding to the world building, or what-have-you.
Honestly I like the way they've implemented the management of the trade empire so far, because that's pretty much exactly how I'd envision it; you make a few big decisions for it, but generally as a Rogue Trader you won't micromanage it because you have people to do that for you.
having played the alpha for over 5 hours now, its pretty damn good for a alpha when it comes to owlcat games. not many bugs for example compared to pathfinder. many of the deeper systems seem to be missing though right now. you still dont really have much of an idea how characters level up , develop and how you can customize them yet. but what is there right now is really fun. combat needs a speed up option for the a.i turn though. things can still get rather slow when there is alot of mobs.
I am not personally happy to hear that RT is simpler and easier than Pathfinder, because I personally immensively enjoy the complexity and flexibility of the interconnected systems they provided. But I am happy to find out that these guys just don't give up. After having everyone critisize their kingdom management and crusade systems that they really wanted to make work, they didn''t give up, they didn't say "oh well we we willl just focus on the RPG stuff this time". These guys just WANT to create a 4X/Strategy/RPG game and they put in all the work which other game devs would consider crazy ("they are already implementing an extremely complicated system in Pathfinder, why do they want to put a goddamn HOMM in there as well, are they mad?"). The thing is, both CRPG as well as TBSG are crazy complicated by themselves, most devs are like "nah let's make a survival / MOBA / battle royale game, something we can realistically make good". And Owlcat are just a bunch of amphetamine-fuelled tech-priests or something, they create a crazy compicated game which would have taken other people many years to create, and then instead of just building up what they created, making pathfinder3 etc, they are like "buckle up guys, we just implemented the whole of Pathfinder in a video game while making it simultaniously TB and RTwP combat, now we are going to do a Warhammer project, and we are going to do fckng Gothic Armada space combat + Endless Space planet management + classic CRPG with TB combat! These people are mad, they are crazy! Maybe for their next game they will do Total War battles, CIV 4X strategy and Baldur's Gate 3 CRPG layer all combined in one as well? Absolute madlads.
Spending hours to make a good build before setting foot into the game is not a great experience for everyone. This isn't dnd experience. And I like that.
Im so exiting about this game, and thanks for showing some gameplay, i want play the alpha but my english is not that good, because hafe much text to learn. Im waiting german translation.
Very promising I hated the king management system as well in kingmaker so glad to hear that's at a minimum. Hope they keep power levels within universe lore. I don't want to be killing multiple Chaos Space Marines with non Astartes like Inquisitor Martyr.
Regarding the space travel, it actually seemed to be a little too safe and accessible in this alpha. At least from a lore perspective. Going to be an interesting problem to balance the sheer risk of warp travel (constant danger of attack or madness, and the chance of arriving at your destination a century later than you planned) with actually fun game design without oversimplifying one of the most interesting and detailed aspects of the setting.
I like how the use the attributes from the wh40k tabletop. I think theyve only added a couple that aren't on that tabletop. idk about rogue trader ive just played the army building one.
I am really glad they stayed with 6 characters for combat than the 4 it looked like. I can't really say why, but 6 characters for RPGs feel much better than the typical 4.
Even though Owl Cat did such a poor job with the console version of kingmaker I still got wrath of the righteous so we shal see if they learned from kingmaker. I want to like them and this game looks great but they need to make games that actually work. Also I would rather have had space Marines as the basis for the game.
How's the encounter design? Even compared to similar RtwP games new and old, the amount of enemies in Kingmaker and WOTR was very, very high. It's actually been one of their weaknesses to me, in particular as it's often been a case of quantity over quantity. In particular the late game of Kingmaker was pretty bad. The same mobs being copied over the place all over. They HAVE to tune that down some now that they're exclusively turn-based. Question is, is it only a case of lesser numbers or -- as you were talking about "cannon fodder" in the video -- actual quality, with unique encounter design and decent scenarios. (Even the sort of ambush at either Oleg's in Kingmaker or the Kenabres tavern early on in WOTR were such a nice change in pace, as they flipped the script at least somewhat).
This looks more promising than their earlier titles for sure. Really didn't like Kingmaker and dropped it pretty quickly, played 50-60 hours of WotR but fatigue got me in the end... It just became a slog after the awesome first two chapters.
Really looking forward to this one. But from experience, I've found that beta and early access kind of ruin game experiences for me, so I'll be patient until release .
It looks like they have trimmed some of the more tedious parts of previous owlcat games. Can't wait to get my hands on the full release. Especially the console version, I find the xbox versions of owlcat games are an amazing way to kick back on a couch and chill for hours.
Do you know if Rogue Trader will have more voice over than previous Owlcat titles? It would make the game more accessible for people with certain disabilities.
It's based off the Rogue Trader TTRPG rules; it's definitely not 1:1 with them but it's very heavily inspired by for the most part. Honestly I like what they've done to make it better suited to a video game.

@@MortismalGaming thanks for the info! I tweeted owlcat games with the same question about a week ago and never got an answer. Seems most of their games get gamepad support with the enhanced editions so this one could be the same
Anyone know of any Alpha Key giveaways? Owlcat said websites and content creators would be holding raffles and giveaways for alpha keys this week but I haven’t seen any. I would really love a chance for an alpha key.
Incomplete but makes me excited to see it coming along. I know I'm in the minority but was hoping for more trade empire management like Kingmaker, not like the Crusades though I hated them. But I get most people don't like them so guess I can be happy.
I have no idea which way they will go with this, but an interesting feature of the raw setting is that warp travel, while faster than light, can still take weeks and can be extremely unpredictable. It’s a reasonably common occurrence in the raw setting for planets to lose contact for decades or even centuries and either collapse, be destroyed by aliens, fall to chaos, or develop an entirely unique divergent civilisation. It makes managing a trade empire unusually complicated! But I expect they would cut some of that out for the sake of this game… And one of the supplemental source books did include rules for developing colonies, so perhaps they’ll build on that.
The Alpha yes. For the released game they will probably (no confirmation yet) do like wrath of the rigtheous: release it to pc and do a port to console later.
It's going to be PC only. No information on any console version yet, but if it's going to happen, it will likely be released at least a year after PC version.
As much as I love 40k and Owlcat, from what you've described I think this series is going in the wrong direction for me. Which is a shame (for me). I know I am in the minority but the highlight for me in Kingmaker was the layered complexity of the pathfinder system combined with the Kingdom management aspect, which I found absolutely fantastic (it was hard yes, but I liked that!) and a real point of difference compared to other RPGs. The trimmed down army management system in WOTR was absolutely horrible - why bother if its just a couple clicks with no real impact? From what you've said, it looks like both the combat system AND the management side are being very much simplified... I will keep an open mind on the combat part, but I am pretty sure I will absolutely hate a further stream-lined management element; they should just remove it entirely, as it's going to serve no real purpose from a game perspective and sounds like it will just be needless padding (like the army management side was in WORT essentially).
The more I hear about the game, the more excited I am for it Though it's kinda sad you have to mention like five times that it's alpha so the game is unfinished yet. For me it's totally obvious that alpha, beta and early access means there is still work to be done
It's rare to get to show this much of a game in Alpha so I wanted to make it exceptionally clear to people not used to seeing games in unfinished states
This is my most anticipated game of 2023!

It's going to be PC only. No information on any console version yet, but if it's going to happen, it will likely be released at least a year after PC version.
@@Arcling Thanks! Lately I prefer the Xbox to my PC, but I won't be able to wait a year.
Generally with Owlcat, you're waiting an additional 6months to a year for console.
Is this game fully voiced?
Too early to say, almost nothing in alpha is, but WotR voice acted the important stuff, so we'll have to see where it ends up
U a busy boy
Combat seems like XCOM++
is it only turn based?
Yeah
the spaceship combat smells like the mechanic that i use mods to skip........
What I can't wrap my head around is the title of "Rogue Trader". Shouldn't these guys be called "Licensed Trader"? You know... the opposite?
I loved Kingmaker system ;(
Is there romance option in the game?
Yes

Like the Xcom/Divinity Original Sin 2 looking gameplay, don't like the cartoony art style.
I can tell that the ship-to-ship combat is going to be a hassle and annoying.
The more I hear about the game, the more excited I am for it
Though it's kinda sad you have to mention like five times that it's alpha so the game is unfinished yet. For me it's totally obvious that alpha, beta and early access means there is still work to be done
It's rare to get to show this much of a game in Alpha so I wanted to make it exceptionally clear to people not used to seeing games in unfinished states
@@MortismalGaming I guess the bad side of being veteran gamer reared it's ugly head 😅
Looks like the same engine as Hard West 2.
Yeah it's Unity, very common for isometric games
