You can dehydrate those tomato skins and then grind and have tomato powder to add to soups. Very good. Very frugal.

My daughter in law showed me how to do this! She also told me if you get a tougher (cheaper) cut of roast you Dan throw some tomatoes in with it and the acid from the tomatoes really makes the toast tender.

When I was little (in my oma’s kuche!) she always had fresh bread on jam making day so we could eat bread and foam. You can mix it in but it makes them jam cloudy and less pretty but still as delicious. Jam is complicated and doubling recipes doesn’t always work great but luckily you can still eat it as a syrup or plop into yogurt or oatmeal. Looks great.

Interesting recipe - I make tomato jam with cinnamon sticks as the only spice. Everybody complains about it anyway - in California unless it has chili pepper in it no one wants to mess with tomato jam. BTW, you probably could have gotten away with using 3-1/2 cups of sugar, but no less than that or it will spoil quickly. Also, if you add citric acid (sour salt in Indian and Middle Eastern markets, made from concentrated dried citrus juice) you preserve the color and give it a sour edge which cuts the sweetness. Also, I've never used pectin in my recipe - as someone else here mentioned, I just throw a couple of peeled diced green apples in with the tomatoes, and it thickens up nicely. Thanks for posting this, and bring on more frugal recipes!

Don't be afraid of canning. Your smart! Just get yourself the Ball canning book and follow instructions. You can fill your pantry with all those good in season crops for winter use. Like peaches ect. If you need help give me a hollar! PS you should pick up a dehydrator it's even better than canning your extras.

When making jam it is important to know how many cups of liquid you have. Same thing with the pectin. Sugar you can play with some . The best jam I've made is when I stick to the directions. Inside the pectin box will have the directions for many jam and jelly recipes .

I found out, I'll admit totally by accident, that you don't actually need to put the tomatoes in boiling water. I did boil the water & had all my tomatoes in the sink prepared to make spaghetti sauce but after turning the burner off became distracted. By the time I returned the water was no hotter than what you could run from the tap so I dumped it into the plugged sink over the tomatoes then took the pot to the basin sink to refill it figuring I'd boil more & add it to the other water but upon returning I found my tomatoes with happy split skin that came right off & I cld handle them right away. I decided to run the tap as hot as it could get & fill the sink then dump in more tomatoes & to my delight they began peeling. It saved me so much time I was so happy.

You honestly need to use jars and lids. You will see a huge difference. And my grandma's rule of making jellies and jams is we always made then in the winter time. Never summer. We would pick fruit and freeze it whole. Then when winter came we would make jelly. My favorite was and still is sand plum jelly. I learned my frugal ways from my Auntie. They used everything! Never wasted anything!

  • @lizg5574

I always halve the sugar in the jam I make - and it doesn't go mouldy. Nor, after storing a while, does it get sugar crystals forming, making it solid.
If you get a lot of green tomatoes left on your vines, you can make a fantastic sweet pie. Just slice them thickly, dredge them with a mix made from sugar and spices of your choice (from what I know, pumpkin spice would be ideal) a little corn starch, place them into a pie plate, cover with crust or crumble and bake. Serve with whipped cream. (I actually make coconut cream - put a can of coconut cream into the fridge overnight, then carefully drain the water, reserving all the thick cream. Whip with a few teaspoons of powdered sugar and vanilla, until as thick as normal cream - vegan friendly!)

Hi, please always use a recipe and use approved method of canning. You can use a spice bag instead of putting spices in. You need to measure. Follow USA guidelines for canning. Someone could get sick. It's 4 to 6 tablespoons to one box . A box of pectin is 49grams . I know your going to say blah blah blah but since you froze it. It maybe okay. Very entertaining video. You can stir slower . The foam is fine. Before sugar they would have cooked it down for hours.

The foam contains impurities that negatively affect the flavor of the jam (or soup broth). Also making jam or jelly requires some pretty exact amounts, not very good to freewheel it with this type of product. For example, you can’t just double a batch=won’t thicken. Rather you need to make two batches.

Good evening Amy, Frugal Daddy and girls! Agree 100% LOVE THE ENDING! TOO CUTE!!! As far as the jam... tomatoes from the store just are not that meaty like home grown, there is more juice than flesh. So it is just not going to be as thick without following the recipe pretty closely the first time Jams and Jellies can be finicky. But the end result looked pretty good to me with a little vegan spread to cut a little sweetness you might really enjoy it! Thanks for sharing Loved the video and I think I may try this recipe! Have a FANTABULOUS NIGHT! Much love and GOD BLESS Y'ALL!💞😘😘💞
