  • I'm going to try pickling blackberries, based on two different recipes:
Pickled Unripe blackberries - which I saw here:
    goingwildforagi...
Pickled ripe blackberrries, which I am basing loosely on this recipe:
    www.theguardia...
Part 2 of this series is now availble here: • Pickled Blackberries -...

I always used to love blackberrying years ago, when my mum was here, used to make load of bramble jelly or puree, delicious on ice cream!
Have you noticed this year the blackberries are smaller than usual, obviously due to the very dry summer.

When foraging for blackberries a super useful accessory is a walking stick with a curved handle. Great for moving obstructing branches safely out of the way and for pulling fruit laden branches within reach.
I grow blackberries in my own garden. Very easy fruit to freeze so I can use them in cooking when out of season. I like to throw a handful in with oats when making porridge. I also make blackberry jam, and sauces for ice cream and pancakes.

I've just tasted my pickled ripe blackberries after 1 week with a few mulberries and blueberries thrown in just to top up the fruit content in the jar. Will look forward to trying them again around Christmas 😊

Nice vid, cant wait to see the end result.
Made some blackberry vinegar last year.
I use it like a balsamic, really nice.

Not quite on topic, but I have to toss this one out before I forget it. We have a lot of blackberries here so I do some experimentation, and one thing I found amazing is cooking some (ripe) blackberries with jalapeno peppers, straining that and putting it over salmon.

here in portugal there is two kinds of blackberrys: a real black berry from a tree a big a very sweet fruit and the silvas a small bush that go on walls and small trees that have a small fruit. so big ones are called: franboesas, small ones are amora preta or amora silvestre

Thanks for the info, always interesting to get comments like yours. - Are the big blackberries actually Black Mulberry? (they are found on a tree with heart-shaped leaves, and often burst when you pick them) - It's interesting how similar they are to blackberries, even though they are more closely related to figs.

@@AtomicShrimp the bigger blackberry, in portuguese called: franboesa, its much more sweet and had a hole inside, and the amoras are small and most of especies had almost like "hair" over the fruit and most of the time with small bugs...heheh i always eat like this without washing and didnt died...hehe

When I pick them, I always look at the scar on the fruit where the stalk attached - if it's pale green in colour, the fruit is usually free of insect larvae - if it's stained with the juice, then the fruit may contain bugs. At least, that tip seems to work in my locality.

22G of salt seems a lot, but then i just imagined a energy drink with like 60G of sugar in it
