I seriously love seeing these malls that we don’t see on UA-cam 100X. I know they don’t pull in viewers, but these are the places that usually have not changed much through the years and it’s fascinating to see these places before they’re gone…
Doomie, on behalf of everybody here who's decided to take a look at your videos in 2023, I'd like to thank you for providing them all to us, and that I hope 2024 is just as informative on this as 2023 was.
And also, know that your efforts aren't in vain...they're very much appreciated by us!
=)
The grove arcade and downtown Asheville are great to visit off season. The last time I was there, it was summertime a few years ago and the Pinball museum had a two hour wait for entry.
The plaza in WS looked like it was well maintained. The floors were shining like glass! That’s the type of mini mall strip plaza I would like to open a small weekend only arcade, but the prices per square foot for lease here in the Charleston area are astronomical.
I hope you're able to open a weekend only arcade somewhere, even if not in city of Charleston and outside of there. Good luck to you.
@@BoratWanksta Thanks BW!
This was actually well done and to be honest, you're discounting yourself here. Simple, stunning, and that arcade is amazing. I hope the Nashville Arcade (as it is under renovation now) has a similar positive fate.
Man, those spiral staircases on the grove arcade are *spectacular*. The Southeast Plaza also has a certain charm, as an odd in-between sort of place.
Arcades were Malls before Malls. Atlanta had the Peachtree Arcade built in 1918. Very happy to see this one standing and in use.
That Mini Mall is far larger than the smallest mall I've been to, and it's not far from where I live. It no longer is one, but in the day, it boasts a gigantic 5 stores (no typo, FIVE), a junior anchor on the immediate left, in-line next to it, and 2 in-lines on the right. The major anchor in the middle was a Marshall's. The junior was a Prime Value Mart (I guess it was the discount sister to Service Merchandise, being the same company ran them). The right side was a gift store, spot next to Marshall's always vacant in my time. Eventually, the 2 right in-lines became a Blockbuster Video, and became accessible only from it's own front entry. The junior anchor ate the last in-line behind it. Forgot what it was, but was a party supply store which I remember. The mall was dead at this point, as it too only was accessible from it's own front entry. Marshall's now has it's entry up front. When you enter, you'll see the registers, and some merchandise in a narrow part of the store before it opens up to the main store. That narrow section was where the mall corridor once was. The walls were where you entered the the in-lines (including the junior anchor), which is all that remains of the mall.
Unimportant, on the far left was always a stand-alone anchor attached at the hip, which was a grocery store, then a Staples, now it's a critical care clinic.
The arcade is so beautiful!
Thanks Doomie. In a hundred years when all these places are gone some archaeologist is gonna have to cite your videos as a research source.
Google Grove Arcade history, a fascinating story of the mall. Can't find this anywhere, but rumor has it the 18 story skyscraper idea ended as the Great Depression began. Great video(s)!
The Grove should be on the National Historic Registry!
The Southeast Plaza is ok but I like the Grove Arcade even better. When I saw the thumbnail for this video, it was bugging me so much. I was like what does this place remind me of. I put my finger on it. It makes me think of Hogwarts from Harry Potter, especially the inside. I don't even like Harry Potter because I'm very into Christianity but I love the ambience videos of H.P. here on UA-cam. That's my only exception. They have so many good options IMO.
Check out Clevelands The Old Arcade located in downtown. #1 in the USA! Biggest and most elegant arcade!
I've always thought it was a shame that malls - with some notable exceptions of proto-examples like this - didn't really become a thing until the 1950s, when International style was king. I would love to see some of the Art Deco or Streamline Moderne malls that would have been built in the 1930s and '40s.
Hi Doomie. Glad to see you in NC. Would love your take on Crabtree Valley and Triangle Town Center in Raleigh.
SouthEast Plaza kind of reminds me of The Bainbridge Mall in Bainbridge, Georgia
Is the interior of that mall still open?
I've stumbled upon it in the past, but can't get any info on whether it's still a proper mall or not.
@@DoomieGruntVentures I heard some rumors on Google Maps that the Mall's interior is closed off to the public
