My grandmother worked as a sales associate at JCPenney here when it first opened. She used to tell me how big the mall seemed then and her coworkers told her that one day JCPenney would be in the middle of the emall instead of the end and she thought they were joking. I remember when the Gamestop was Chick-fil-a (the first in the city) and I also remember the Frank & Stein. I also remember the Shoney's that later became a Subway and when the center area in the middle of the 1975 part was a carpeted well with seats and benches. They used to have live performances there, before they renovated it and put that "bridge" across the center, effectively cutting it in half.

I used to go to that mall when I was a teenager, it was the thing to do on Friday night and hang out with your friends. It would be packed with people. This was back in the early 90's.

Enjoyed seeing this. I also worked there when the mall first opened and lived very close by. JC Penney was the end store of old part so that’s why you have to walk through it to get to the newer part added on many years later. It’s really sad how rundown it is, especially now. Later in life I worked 20 years at Piedmont Airlines also on Hanes Mall Blvd, which made it so convenient for me. 😢

Great nostalgic post. Lived in Winston Salem in 99 and this mall, believe it or not, was almost a tourist attraction. Obviously seen better days now, but still a great post and trip down memory lane

I love that mall, I hate that malls took out all the fountains

Alls should put back fountains, real plants, and more places to eat - fun community centers that also sell some stuff.
Since most things can be bought online, the malls need to be enjoyable places with fun activities & dining... Smartphone Delivery is even taking away from sit-down restaurants now...

@@SeaJay_Oceans I really hope they don't get replaced with Smartphone delivery. I don't think it will happen though.

What if the malls were really economic experiments used to study the local markets ?
Sealed inside - your every movement and purchase tracked... Now replaced by Amazon and other online 'research' and manipulation.

Only place in the mall you could get a beer. Not sure about the bar at the south back entrance, but they were an open front cafe where you still felt like you were in the mall, and could see people you know walk past.

The fact that the mall has both an old and new part, reminds me of "Northpoint City" where I live. It started life as "Northpoint Shopping Centre", but as part of Frasers Property being seemingly obsessed with mixed developments, it was expanded into that, and the old part became the "North Wing", with the new part being the "South Wing", and "North Park Residences" being built on top of that new part.

I worked at Hanes Mall from 1977-1980 when I went off to college. I worked at K&K Toys and then Sharpe's Brides & Grooms Tux Shop. Even as a teenager I knew how cool it was to work at the mall. Every break I had I was at the Corn Dog talking to the cute girls in their short shorts.

I smoked a lot of pot outside that mall and spent several hundred thousand dollars in Alladins Castle in the mid eighties. Walking around the mall on acid and/or qualludes was a great Friday or Saturday night. When it closed, you cruised Stratford rd until 1-2. My mom took me to Sears and JC Penny right before the start of each school year for clothes when I was young. Anyone else remember the gameroom in Sears? It was just as google as Alladins Castle.

Great video! By the way the movie theater property was actually where Golden Corral and Texas Roadhouse is currently. The road coming down from Stratford Rd beside of Golden Corral is present in vintage photos of the theater when it dat there.

Hanes Mall was once the biggest mall in NC, it was surpassed by SouthPark in the early 2000s. Unfortunately, I’d hardly call this mall thriving. It’s extremely outdated both on the exterior and interior, and having retail space replaced with office space is never a good sign for the mall itself.

That's right, the theater sat diagonally in the area right between the Golden Corral and Texas Roadhouse. It was torn down and the property divided into those two parcels.

Problem with heights? All the good stuff was upstairs back in the day. The rent was even high upstairs in the 80's. I grew up in that mall, cruised Straigford and all. Back when it and Putt Putt marked the end of commercial property, and there was no Hanes Mall Blvd. But I haven't been back since they banned smoking, Winston-Salem (and Hanes Mall) being built on tobacco and all.

15:53 Ahhhhhh "Auntie Anne's"! I don't know why, but I always seem to go for 2 specific flavours I can't remember the names of: the pamersan, and the other one (garlic?) that I really can't remember the name of.
16:14 That sounds like it was a cool place! It does remind me of the name of something else though, I think it's "Monster Curry".

Great walkthrough. Camera glasses are absolutely a way more discreet solution, but the payoff is quality and shakiness due to constant motion.

Macys Corp is closing the hanes mall location, I believe it’s the largest tenant at Hanes. It’s very sad. Because it’s 2nd of a major tenant to close at Hanes, Hanes also lost 23 retailers within the last 3 months, We need to save Hanes!
The friendly location In Greensboro will be the only server of the triad and is scheduled to get a higher end renovation.

I can't believe malls have hung on for as long as they have. When I was growing up in the 80s, they were always packed. I've been in a few malls in the last ten years, and they're always ghost towns. Sad, or is it?

Just depends on the mall. Here in Houston on a given day (not during a pandemic) the big malls here are always packed. Hard to find good parking on a given weekend.

I wish these malls would’ve kept their beautiful water fountains instead of replacing them with play areas which are breeding grounds for germs. Also, carpets should never ever be used in malls. They’re destined to be irreparably stained and turn ugly.

The movie theater really was where golden Coral buffet is now . The movie theater was demolished between 2000 2010 you totally mistaken. It was a car garage custom tire place a newer building it is retail shop. Your movie theater info wrong the theater was torn down on the site where Golden corral is now. I live in North Carolina Clemmons area. Since 1987. 100 percent sure honest no mistakes on my info right as rain.
