Thanks. Total lifesaver - the vid made much more sense than the instruction booklet. It has allowed the completion of a sewing project (1 am). Best wishes
Thank-you,I have been wondering how to do this for YEARS. I hadn't realized about the lever having to be pulled down!!!!! Didn't even know there was one. I had been only making half a buttonhole, couldn't work out how to do the other side! Read and re-read the instructions to no avail....So glad I finally searched UA-cam......YEAH. Thank-you so much for posting this video.
Hi Domenica, I needed to sew buttonholes tonight. I have a Janome DC3018 - many years old. I have never used this foot before although it did come with my machine. I looked at the instruction book, I was a bit confused by the instructions. Then I found your video. Thank goodness. Your instructions were pure & simple & I was able to get those pesky buttonholes done. Thank you!!!
Best demo. Thank you especially for showing how to place the button in the button selection. Plus the whole presentation was clear, concise and informative.
OhMiGosh! I just want to say that this was a tutorial that explained everything without leaving me with questions. My grandma, who had been sewing for longer than I've been alive, couldn't figure it out, and neither could I. I found this video, and it was my life savor.
Thank you so much! Although I have a manual the instructions aren't very user friendly. I totally missed the lever that had to be pulled down so my buttonholes were always the wrong length! Looking forward to making lovely professional buttonholes now.
Bless your heart! Seriously the best video on this subject, and the pin at the end is genius for slitting open the buttonhole. Most instructional videos are simply annoying and/or unclear and then out of focus too, but yours are fantastic. Thank you so much for saving my sewing day. It's been years since I used my embroidery machine for buttonholes, but I suddenly needed some and had no idea where my manual was... Embroidery I can do without thinking, but buttonholes - that whole process was simply gone from my head! Thank you so much for this video. Looking forward to your other instructional videos! :-)
Thanks for uploading this video! I inherited a Janome sewing machine from my late mother-in-law and have no idea how to use the buttonhole function. I just made a skirt and after watching your video, I managed to make the buttonholes!
Thank you for this video, I've never sewn more than a straight line and found your tutorial dead easy to follow. It's almost embarrassing how big a mountain I've made of the molehill that is button holes! Thanks again :)
Thank you for your tutorial. I completely missed the "buttonhole lever" and could not sew the button hole without it. Once I saw your tutorial I lowered the button hole lever and it worked perfectly.
I kept getting an error saying 'bl' thinking it meant blockage and didn't understand why. Only now I realise that it probably means buttonhole lever! Pulled it down and button holes are sewing fine! At least I have learnt something!
Elaine... that is exactly what happened to me… I forgot about the buttonhole lever! Yay my sewing machine is not broken and I can finish my blouse! Thank you so much 😊
So appreciate that you have made this tutorial - I am using my new (ish) Janome to make button holes for the first time and doubt I would have managed without this, Thank you!
Thank you for a great tutorial! Was happy to find my buttonhole lever! And I love the tip of putting in a pin when opening the buttonhole with a seam ripper! 😃
Thank you - lost the manual for my machine and couldn't figure out how to use the buttonhole attachment so have been avoiding jobs that require it. Excellent tutorial :-)
You can find a PDF of the manual online, just put in your machine like mine is a "Janome Magnolia 7330 Manual" and Google Search it. Pulls it right up! The whole thing in English and several different languages.
Really helpful! Mine made a perfect button hole and then when I tried the second, it would randomly stop and then start piling stitch on top of stitch until I had a cement hard lump I had to rip out 2x. What if your button hole is done over several layers of fabric? Your tutorial showed just one layer. Could that be the issue?? UPDATE went to troubleshooting page, got some answers.. finicky foot.. have to be careful with several things. One making sure the speed is slow, two, making sure no fabric is touching the back of the foot, and three, making sure the layers are flat and the foot stays level. Thanks again.
I couldn't for the life of me remember how to do a buttonhole on my Janome. It just kept going and going... I was just about to send it to be repaired, then I thought maybe UA-cam could help! The black lever thingy!! I forgot the black lever thingy!! Thanks so much, saved me a trip to the repairman!! :)
Thank goodness for UA-cam and being able to find this video! I could not for the life of me figure out how to use the buttonhole attachment. After watching your video ONE TIME, I sewed a perfect buttonhole. What I was doing wrong was I was pulling down the wrong lever. The Janome instructions are not very clear on that point.
Glad I could help! I agree with the instruction manual point. I can only understand the instructions in there once I actually know how to do it! UA-cam is my good friend too! Domenica 😊
Wow, thanks for this video. Had my machine for 2 years & couldn't get the buttonhole attachment to work. It was the lever that I missed in the process. I can't believe it was the reason. It is in the machine booklet of instructions but not a great picture of details. I just thought I was missing a piece of the buttonhole attachment. Great video! I am on to make some buttonholes.
Thanks for this! I just read the manual for my Janome but there were things I didn't understand, so your video really helped. Off I go to make buttonholes for a mini doll vest :)
Hi I have just come across your video It was very helpful so a big thank you for that I have liked and subscribed to your channel also a big thank you for taking your time to make and post this video
Thank You So Much! It is just before Christmas and I was stuck with a special present. The manual is not helpful on this one....I am so happy I don't have to sew these buttonholes by hand!
Great =) I actually caught myself whispering "oh that's sexy" when you put the button in to get the right length XD I am so going to get this machine for myself
Great tutorial! I had to turn the volume way up, but your instructions were really clear. Have you tried sewing over the buttonhole twice to improve the quality of the buttonhole?
How about the tension setting & stitch length what number will you set it? Mine is not a computerized one & i have no manual since i bought in second hand. Pls help....i'm a newbie in sewing and can't get it right.
Thank you for explaining how to make a buttonhole. When sewing the buttonhole, why did you sew twice on the left side of the buttonhole and only once on the right side?
WHY can't Janome explain WHERE the buttonhole lever is? The instruction manual makes it look like it is on the attachment itself. I shouldn't have to go to UA-cam to find a video to figure out how to use my machine!! In any event, thanks for the video. It saved my day.
Hi what does it mean when everything works fine on scraps but on your actual clothes the button holes are much to short? It's completely ignoring the size of my button except for on scraps sometimes when it feels like working. Feel like I got ripped off by Janome :( part of the reason I bought a new sewing machine was button holes and all that's happened is hours of unpicking and damaged fabric and scraps that look fine. Is my machine malfunctioning do you think?
Sadly, while executing my first automatic buttonhole on my 25 yr old Janome last week, the internal mechanism for the pull down arm broke and my dealer says no parts are available for my Decor Excel 5018 (last mechanical Janome).😔 will need to resort to manual buttonholes.
Thanks for the video but it does not answer why I’m having so much trouble making buttonholes. The lever is down, but after sewing a few stitches it tells me to bring the lever down. Why?...
orestesdd Yes. You can adjust the buttonhole foot to cater for different button sizes. Just put your button into the gauge (ua-cam.com/video/iHJqpt4HlPQ/v-deo.htmlm4s) on the foot and the machine will then know what size to make the button hole.
Driving me insane trying to make a buttonhole with this foot on cotton lawn. Unpicking the mess is shredding my fabric. Have changed needle, used stiff interfacing. No idea what else to do. 😢
I have worked for several hours with no success. I always get an error code, either dL or L. One of those says ta button has been pressed. I haven’t pressed anything but the presser foot.
Thank you. First time trying to use my Janome machine to make a buttonhole and I kept getting the buttonhole lever error message - BEEP! I could not find the buttonhole lever!! The instruction manual was NOT helpful. Thank you - thank you for your video!!
Does anyone else think the audio is very quiet on this? I had my audio at 100% on my PC and my speakers and still couldn't hear the instructions. Thank goodness for Auto Closed Captions.
Mine one doesn't work. It goes to the end and clogs up and doesn't go back, Anyone knows how to fix this? I did everything correctly and it doesn't work. I tried this so many times and it's been years now that I can't use my automatic buttonhole :(
mine doesn't connect at the very end :( .... just remember your top thread is supposed to go under the foot not over it, push it through the whole before you put the foot down
Thanks. Total lifesaver - the vid made much more sense than the instruction booklet. It has allowed the completion of a sewing project (1 am). Best wishes

Wow. 8 years later and this video is still so helpful. Thank you. I was in a rush to finish a project and you helped me from having a meltdown 😂

I, too, totally missed the "buttonhole lever". Thank you for your clear and concise tutorial!!! Well done.

That’s awesome 🙌🏻
Thank you. Your tutorial saved me time! :) I've never done a button but had the foot. Glad I chose to learn to use the foot rather than do it by hand.
I would never have found that buttonhole lever without your help!
Thank you for this video, I've never sewn more than a straight line and found your tutorial dead easy to follow. It's almost embarrassing how big a mountain I've made of the molehill that is button holes! Thanks again :)
I just subscribed. Excellent video. Without you my crafts would not have buttonholes!
Thank you for your tutorial. I completely missed the "buttonhole lever" and could not sew the button hole without it. Once I saw your tutorial I lowered the button hole lever and it worked perfectly.
Glad I could help!
Janome manual doesn't explain how to use lever, you cant even see it on the machine unless you know where look!
thanks!
I kept getting an error saying 'bl' thinking it meant blockage and didn't understand why. Only now I realise that it probably means buttonhole lever! Pulled it down and button holes are sewing fine! At least I have learnt something!

You’re welcome! All the best with you newish Janome 😁
The first button hole I’ve ever done thanks to you! And, like lots of other people, I had no idea about the lever!! Thank you! 😁
Thank you for a great tutorial! Was happy to find my buttonhole lever! And I love the tip of putting in a pin when opening the buttonhole with a seam ripper! 😃
Thank you so much!!!! I haven't done buttonholes in ages and was ready to go with snaps until I found your tutorial. Perfect!
You're welcome, Cathy Junga. Thanks for watching :)
Thank you - lost the manual for my machine and couldn't figure out how to use the buttonhole attachment so have been avoiding jobs that require it. Excellent tutorial :-)
jpmcd100 Thank you!
You can find a PDF of the manual online, just put in your machine like mine is a "Janome Magnolia 7330 Manual" and Google Search it. Pulls it right up! The whole thing in English and several different languages.
Whoo hoo, no more avoiding buttons due to the annoyance of having to sew a buttonhole! Thank you so much for such an easy to follow tutorial!
Thank you for this , the manual made no sense to me, cracked it the first time after watching you !
Excellent video! Clear, concise and very easy to follow. Thank you,
Thank you, I was wondering how to open the button hole! So I will remember to use my seam ripper and pin. Excellent video and thanks for postinng
OMG. You totally answered my question. Putting the button in to set the size! Thank you.
Really helpful! This is happening to me over and over, very frustrating.
Thank you so much for coming back and saying what worked, that's what was going wrong with mine
This is the best tutorial ever!!!! Thank you so much.
I couldn't for the life of me remember how to do a buttonhole on my Janome. It just kept going and going... I was just about to send it to be repaired, then I thought maybe UA-cam could help! Jodie Bye Glad I could help! I've definitely forgotten the black lever thingy before. :)

Thank you so much. My thread kept breaking. In your video, you have the thread over the attachment and to the left. I can now make button holes.
Great stuff! All the best with those button holes 😀.
great idea to pin the edge on the button hole so that the seam ripper wouldn't cut the edge. never thought of it. thanks very much.
Glad I could help!
Domenica 😊
Thank you for showing how to mark where the button hole should begin (the bottom)!
Thank you for posting this. I don't think I would even have got started with it. Am going to attempting my first buttonhole with this.
You made that look real easy. I will give it a go tomorrow. Thank you.
Tried it after about 6 attempts, IT WORKED. Thank you. Now I don't have to swap machines just to do buttonholes!
Thanks for this - I too wasn’t pulling down the correct lever and so failing miserably! Buttonholes now sorted 😊
Thanks for this! I just read the manual for my Janome but there were things I didn't understand, so your video really helped. Off I go to make buttonholes for a mini doll vest :)
Thank you so much. I couldn't manage to move the button measure thingy at the back, then voilà, you showed me how!
susan truscott excellent. Glad I could help 😊
Hi I have just come across your video It was very helpful so a big thank you for that I have liked and subscribed to your channel also a big thank you for taking your time to make and post this video
Ohhh...thank you! I can’t find my instruction manual! Wonderful instructions!
Thank You So Much! It is just before Christmas and I was stuck with a special present. The manual is not helpful on this one....I am so happy I don't have to sew these buttonholes by hand!
This was very helpful as a beginner, thank you!
Thanks so much. I had no idea how to use the automatic buttonholer
where did you put the zigzag and stitch length setting? Since you don't show I assume it doesnt matter.
Thank you! This was so helpful!
Only came here to find the buttonhole lever for my dc2200, ended up getting some useful tips on how to make the hole after the stitch was completed.
I had no problem hearing you. Thank you for an informative lesson, however on my machine I have to reset every time around.
Thanks so much. i have lost my manual so this was a bonus.
Glad I could help, Urban Gecko!
Great =) I actually caught myself whispering "oh that's sexy" when you put the button in to get the right length XD I am so going to get this machine for myself
+Fandomily Cosplay It is a great machine!
Great tutorial! I had to turn the volume way up, but your instructions were really clear. Have you tried sewing over the buttonhole twice to improve the quality of the buttonhole?
So enlightened. You make it sound easy...here goes....
The trick with the pin is genius, I always have trouble with accidentally tearing through my threads!!
Hi,do you drop the feed dog when sewing button holes
Can do one side fine but second side is just a straight stitch.great demonstration. Can you please help. Thanks
Excellent instruction. Thanks!
Thank you! Didn’t know what he button hole lever was til you showed me. Ooohhhh
Do you have to select stitch length etc?
How about the tension setting & stitch length what number will you set it? Mine is not a computerized one & i have no manual since i bought in second hand. Pls help....i'm a newbie in sewing and can't get it right.
Thank you so much! Just what I needed. Well done!
your video made my day!!!
I have a Janome "R" foot and need to make a 21/2" buttonhole. I there a way to adjust without a button?Thank you...kasey
You are a life saver!! thank you!!
Thank you for explaining how to make a buttonhole. When sewing the buttonhole, why did you sew twice on the left side of the buttonhole and only once on the right side?

Does anyone know how to do button holes which are for larger buttons than the foot will take?
How do I set the computerised bit to use the pressure foot?
I have a DC Janome 2014. My button hole setting keeps giving me the message 6L or bL and stops. Can you help me?
Thanks, that's a great tutorial
Thanks had missed "lever down" on mine. So all works well now.
Well, this machine can create only small button holes. What if I would like to have 1.5 inch button hole?
Sadly, while executing my first automatic buttonhole on my 25 yr old Janome last week, the internal mechanism for the pull down arm broke and my dealer says no parts are available for my Decor Excel 5018 (last mechanical Janome).😔 will need to resort to manual buttonholes.
Followed instructions but just stays in same place. I have a Janome 4400. Please help
Thank you ❤️❤️❤️
Nice buttonhole, now how do you put the button on? Is there a special foot for that?
Thank you! Much appreciated!
Thank you its helpful
Thanks for the video but it does not answer why I’m having so much trouble making buttonholes. The lever is down, but after sewing a few stitches it tells me to bring the lever down. Why?...
I have a mc9900 and the lever doesn’t pull down enough so doesn’t register
Thank you!
Can it be use to make button holes on a man's shirt where the buttons are small? Thanks.
orestesdd Yes. You can adjust the buttonhole foot to cater for different button sizes. Just put your button into the gauge (ua-cam.com/video/iHJqpt4HlPQ/v-deo.htmlm4s) on the foot and the machine will then know what size to make the button hole.

Pueden traducirlo al español por favor
Thank you. I was pulling down a wrong lever and it wouldn't finish the buttonhole.
Well that showed me nothing more than I knew before. How do you get the button out of the button hole foot .
Thank you
Does anyone else think the audio is very quiet on this? I had my audio at 100% on my PC and my speakers and still couldn't hear the instructions. Thank goodness for Auto Closed Captions.

Thank you, I missed the lever too!
My button is too big to fit in the slot ;(
Super video ty but I could not hear a darned thing. Please adjust volume next time :-) x
Heather Gilbert I agree! My new videos have better sound quality and lighting now 😊
mine doesn't connect at the very end :( .... just remember your top thread is supposed to go under the foot not over it, push it through the whole before you put the foot down
I cannot hear but a single word u r saying. My volume is fine on every video except yours. Is there some adjustment I should make to accommodate?
I need janome 4000
it was great but it is true that you could hardly hear you
Thanks, Karen Mitchell! Sometimes my Microphone drops out. It's annoying and sometimes I don't realise until I'm editing the video. Grrr. Sorry :(
Volume is too low even at the loudest level. Very hard to hear.
