Forty year old homophobic was all right with the song until he saw Tom Hanks and figured out that it was about a gay man. Tell him Dancing in the Dark is about two gay men cavorting about and watch him hate that one also.😆😅🤣

This song was specifically written for the movie Philadelphia, starring Tom Hanks, Antonio Benderas, and Denzel Washington! It is about a gay man with HIV/AIDS who was fired from his job for those reasons! It won an academy award in 1994, and also got Tom hanks an Oscar for best actor! Love this song, and the movie is even better!!

I know it's corny to go on personal tangents lol but it's been a long time since I heard this song or watched the movie or video.
I grew up very sheltered due to religion and this movie was one of the first times I felt so conflicted. My dad was so mad I watched the movie, meanwhile I went to bed crying because I couldn't grasp the idea of hating the men in the story. I was so touched seeing the family treating their brother just as their brother, which sounds silly 25+ years later but as a kid raised to see gay men as disgusting and evil it was important for me. The other movie I remember with same emotion was a tv movie with Aiden Quinn. The album for Philadelphia was how I became a Bruce Springsteen fan.

This song is really about the loss of friends to AIDS and if you watch the movie you’ll understand why he chose to write this song this way. If you went through the beginning of AIDS horror and lost many friends this song speaks to your soul.

❤ It does. I was very early in my Nursing career when AIDS started. I worked in a small " inner city" type hospital and had cases early on. It was a depressing, desperate time before treatments were available.

Dude honestly I’m from Philly and this song fits perfectly with today except trade AIDS/HIV for drugs. From “walking the avenue” (main neighborhood of where the it’s an open air drug market with dealers/homeless and addicted) and everything else. I hadn’t heard this in a long time and now re-listening it’s making me emotional.
Lost a ton of people including my brother, best friend, uncle, cousin, and countless others. Was selling myself and hoping every time I used that it would be my last time and sick and tired of being sick and tired. ODed a few times and each time I came back angry I was still here.
I have 4 years clean but it still hurts and always will.

This is not a regular song track--it was written specifically for the movie Philadelphia and perfectly captures the meaning and significance of that movie. Springsteen won the Oscar for this song--the first time an Academy Award was given to a rock and roll artist. Check out the movie--it was a great one and Tom Hanks won his first Best Actor award for his lead role in the movie. It also starred Denzel Washington who was also fantastic in it. (He is singing live as he is walking and the street sounds are of course also live--singing to a music track.)

Height of the AIDS epidemic, unrecognizable to myself... feeling lost and misunderstood and hopeless...as there was no cure! The movie, Philadelphia with Tom Hanks was incredible. Bruce is Jersey thur & thur baby like me. He is a NJ favorite son. This song is from a movie which was about the discrimination during the early days of the AIDS epidemic hence the 😢 tone. I was in Philly yesterday & the state of the city since the pandemic has been equally 😢 as it was when this song was recorded. You are reacting to movie soundtracks today without even realizing it 🧐

I was a practicing physician during this period and lived in an area where I had many gay patients. I still remember losing people I’d grown close to over the years because we really had nothing to offer at the time. I loved that movie because it treated a person with AIDS as a person with rights which wasn’t always the case. Denzel Washington was great too. The lyrics would reasonate I think if you watch the movie. Nothing like Brokeback Mountain

You totally missed it. It's a powerful movie and a great song that actually carries the feel of the movie, unlike many soundtrack songs from R&R artists, It can't be all fun and games; life can be sad. The AIDS epidemic killed so many people, most of them gay. It was a hard time for them. Listen to it again and like it, that's an order. BTY many people (including President Bonzo) adsolutly misunderstood Born in the USA.

I love Bruce Springsteen, “The Boss”! He is an a legend, he is from New Jersey! His music is thought provoking and it’s about the gritty realness of life! Born in the USA, for example, talks about the plight of the Vietnam Vets! This song was on the soundtrack of the Oscar winning Tom Hanks movie, Philadelphia! It’s about the prejudice and fear related to AIDS and homophobia! Great film!❤❤

It may not be your cup of tea but, you owe it to yourself and your family to see the movie. It shows how people were treated by even their friends and family during that time. People would not get it the same elevator, come into the same room, even paramedics were afraid of touching you, all this while you’re literally dying and desperately needed the comfort of friends.

I grew up around Bruce Springsten, 2 towns over and have seen him at the Stone Pony when I was underage, he would occasionally stop into Friday night date night at a local roller rink when a bandmate's. I believe cousin and his highschool garage band would play, he would join in for a few songs...And I have seen him multiple times at stadium concerts in The,Meadowlands, Madison Square Garden, VeteransStadium in Phili. Run into him shopping..He is out and around still in NJ.

Most of his early work tells a story of blue collar guys who fought in Vietnam when the rich kids got exempt and came home to crap, or kids that get oregnant, married and struggle or about himself and bsnd plsying in clubs at the NewJersey shore until they get their 1st contract .
As he became more famous his songs were about the world around him.

Bruce is an outspoken musician that has written many songs that push on topics that are political, socially driven and meaningful. He sings about the lives of working people and their challenges. Bruce has been the conscience for many for decades now. Some will argue that musicians should stick to entertaining and not be political. I would argue that music has always been political and has been a great influence on social & political changes in the world forever. Many artists in the 60's were driven to write music about the Vietnam War & Civil Rights and moved the needle with their influence over the youth. In the 70's, music pushed to give woman equality. In the 80's to end the Cold War, help hunger in Ethiopia, understand Apartheid in South Africa etc. Music has always been influential and shed light onto issues that many may not understand or know about. Bruce has always been a significant part of that. When Bruce writes about an issue, many listen because they respect the man. I wish more artists would be less about the quick pop cash and write songs that are meaningful to what ills we have in our society. Use their stardom to influence change. Our society is ignorant to politics and social issues because most are entertainment driven and know more about J-Lo's problems than what is going on that will actually impact our lives. Music brings the attention to those issues when it is done right.

To each their own. "Philadelphia" is totally different from Springsteen's other work, which admittedly was a surprise back then, but it was PERFECT for a great movie, and absolutely deserved the Academy Award. I love the song BECAUSE it was different.

Unless you lived thru the AIDS epidemic and felt the hopelessness of losing loved ones to that horrible disease you can never understand what it was like. Scary horrible disease that changed the world. Watch the movie.

Decades ago I was discussing the movie Philadelphia with other film buffs. The topic was, how would we feel if future generations could not grasp the HUGE significance/impact the film and this song had?
I think I am okay with you being clueless about this.

They played this song a lot on the radio back in the day and I think I just absorbed it through osmosis. I knew what the song was about and that it was from the movie Philadelphia about a man who is dying of AIDS, but it was so heart wrenching, I couldn’t bring myself to watch the movie. (And this is the 1st time I’ve seen the music video, very touching) But the song wore a place in my consciousness & I’ll always love it for that.
