Goo Goo Dolls were a punk band for a long time with little success. Then he wrote "Name", a ballad on a B-side that blew up to the #1 Played song for an entire year. His old Punk fans lashed out at him and he turned into a recluse in depression for a long time. Eventually, he recovered and exploded back in his haters faces with this and another epic ballad and secured his place in songwriting history. But yeah - the lyrics make sense because he was dealing with hate from old fans and sudden adoption into a pop culture his brand had originally shunned.
Saw them back in the day at The Continental in Buffalo. They played there a lot. Sadly, The Continental is being torn down. I enjoyed them back in the day and was glad to see them succeed. I liked them when they switched genres as well. Two different styles, but a great band regardless.

Don’t be put off by the fact that it’s in German: the subtitles are worth the effort. And the kicker is that the sequel (Faraway, So Close!) is even better than that. They were asked to write a song for City of Angels, along with a bunch of HUGE bands. John was going through a divorce at the time. This song was a HUGE hit. FYI John has a real sensitive side because he was orphaned as a young teen and his 5 older sisters raised him.

It became one of those songs that you heard all the time and eventually got tired of hearing. This song was so big that it messed up the lead singer of this group so bad that it sent him spiraling after experiencing severe writer's block. After having such a smash hit he was like "How do you top that? Even though it" only" hit #1in three countries, it was and still is, known worldwide. It put them on the map. It wasn't their first hit tune, that would be the song "Name" but it was whey made them stars. If you ever want to really get some great insight into both the Goo Goo Dolls and the least reacted to great artist of my generation - Sarah McLaughlin - you should watch the moving “City of Angels”. It is a masterclass in a really great movie and reflection of Life but the soundtrack is basically one of if not THE best of my generation (outside of possibly Singles or Reality Bites) but the Goo Goo Dolls and Sarah McLaughlin deliver incredibleness! I LOVE Robby’s singing! Superstar Carwash is my fave GGD album and he’s awesome.
To me, their best tune will always be "Name." This song you just heard was so huge when it came out, especially with it being the big song from the City of Angels movie. It became one of those songs that you heard all the time and eventually got tired of hearing.
This song was so big that it messed up the lead singer of this group so bad that it sent him spiraling after experiencing severe writer's block. After having such a smash hit he was like "How do you top that? Even though it" only" hit #1in three countries, it was and still is, known worldwide. It put them on the map. It wasn't their first hit tune, that would be the song "Name" but it was whey made them stars.
There is an amazing live performance of them in their home town of Buffalo, NY playing with buckets of rain coming down on them. Great performance and you can tell how much they loved their hometown fans.

Goo goo dolls are my favorite 90s band and I never got to see them live until I was 62. They ended the show with Iris and it a beautiful experience! They sounded amazing. Lots of great songs like Slide, Name, and Black balloon to name a few. Thank you for reacting to this ♥️

Man Goo Goo Dolls is such a fantastic band that I think a lot of people overlooked. They have a lot of catchy songs meant for the radio but a lot of their deep cuts sound like hard punk rock. It blew my mind when I first heard.
I used to want this to be my wedding song. It's also from a good movie, City Of Angels, written specifically for it. If you see the movie, you'll understand the lyrics more and why it's called Iris.
My husband and I can't wait to see them next month at a festival in our town here in Ontario Canada.

John Rzeznik is an amazingly gifted songwiter. Listening to his deep and resonating lyrics with the perfect melodies on board is a moving experience. And a beautiful voice too! He and the GGD do so much good in the world and give back.
For a supposed Rom Com, City of Angels asks a pretty philosophical question and has a killer soundtrack. Alanis Morrissette’s Uninvited also comes off this soundtrack, you should definitely check out that song, especially her live version at the Grammies (I think it’s the Grammies).
This song always makes me feel melancholic and think about the past. I wish I could go back in time to 1998 when it first came out. Life was better then.

This came from the soundtrack of City of Angels with Nicholas Cage where he plays an angel. In that theme, the lyrics makes sense. It's a very touching movie as well. Hearing this song makes me want to see it again.
This is my all time favorite song. Iris was my mothers name and I lost her to stomach cancer in July of 2013. I listent to this often and think of her.

If you ever want to really get some great insight into both the Goo Goo Dolls and the least reacted to great artist of my generation - Sarah McLaughlin - you should watch the moving “City of Angels”. It is a masterclass in a really great movie and reflection of Life but the soundtrack is basically one of if not THE best of my generation (outside of possibly Singles or Reality Bites) but the Goo Goo Dolls and Sarah McLaughlin deliver incredibleness! Sarah is an absolute BEAST
The Goo Dolls would practice their music in Robby's West Seneca , NY garage. They'd come home from touring the states & fall back on their Hometown responsibilities... They took out family garbage and Shoveled the Buffalo Snow. They came back to their hometown as if they never left. Great Guys

Speaking of Bryan Adam’s…I’ve suggested it before but I’ll suggest it again…he has an amazing raspy voice and in the song all for live, he sings with Sting and Rod Stewart. All three of them have that unique raspy voice and when they collaborate together in this song it is an amazing result with their voices going so well together. I’m actually about to walk down the aisle to their song on July 4th. I’d love to see you react to All for love by Bryan Adam’s, Sting, and Rid Stewart. Be blessed!

This was written for the soundtrack to the movie City of Angels ( a remake of Wings of Desire). The speaker is an angel who has fallen in love with a human and eventually allows her to see him. The course of the movie is about their beginning relationship and how everything ends. The writer and singer John Rzenik is a great lyricist. The story behind how this song was written might be worth checking out bc it’s this song that got them noticed. It was Grammy nominated, but didn’t win.

I know this is not how the song is "meant" to be taken But my Grandma tooks all 4 of us kids in when we needed us and she passed away shortly after. This was the song that hit me the most for her and is reminding me of her to this day. Music is amazing that way...

Bought this for my Mum as it is her name She wasn't sure of song as it not her type of music but I asked her to listen to words as I missed her and was going through a bad time. It became one of her favourite songs I wanted it at her funeral but my family stopped me makes me so sad.
Saw the live last fall, probably one of the best concerts I have ever seen.
