I can not get over the level of finish and functionality of the living spaces. Lynh has said several times that you have encorporated her ideas and yet kept the sailing function foremost. brilliant. If "professional" cat builders aren't following your channel and taking notes they are out of the minds. I've been looking at cat designs for a while now and I've yet to see something so simple and yet so functional and attractive.

When I came across one of your videos I was so intrigued, I watched all of them in one day. Wow! I love your attention to detail. I'm a retired aircraft Sr Master Craftsman and details a really important to me and I see that work ethic in your work. The only thing I would change on your cockpit table is a larger radius on the corners, other than that it is perfect. Plus in would keep within the theme of the large radii you have used throughout the boat. Job well done and congratulations on getting your Captains License!

You could easily build "spec" boats, and make a ton of cash. Buy a couple Cats like yours, refurbish them in your style, and sell them. I feel like we are brothers some how, because I've never seen another person do things like I do. I think you even surpass me in quality and durability. Great job. Amazing, amazing work you have done. I know I am making a new comment on an old video (binge watching on your channel). OCD comments: Your door handle seem to be squeaking :). If you get a good fry going in the cockpit you might want a shield so the cushion next to the cook top doesn't get grease on it. Again, amazing work!

I love this boat. While I would change that table, by adding a folding extending leaf for the other bench I wouldn't change much else. Production cats should be taking notes or more.
I could watch a whole video on how you kerf'd all those radiuses.

I'd ask you to design in a heart beat and if anyone else seriously considered like upgrades to a like Cat, go for it for the simple reason, It's beautiful and It Works. I'm more than impressed, I'm astounded. What I've said past in your remodeling still echos, beautifully done and there's the future of comfort in all you have accomplished. Bravo, Bravo !!

Wish it was that easy Richard...We are paying for this project as we go and we are working hard to reach our goals. Both Linh and I work hard to make sure the boat will be ready, our cruising kitty is full, and Emma's college fund is secured. That is the biggest reason this project took us over 8 years and now we are just months away!

A door in the riser of one of the steps would allow the cushions to be passed back and forth, for easy storing. I'm glad you made the comment about bumping someone's head. I was thinking that someone is probably your wife. Wondering why you didn't put the headboard on the other end of the bed. Great work. I can do most of what you do, but you do it the way I think about doing it, but never am that neat or accurate.

It’s the security that counts .. if it looks unbreakable they will not attempted get in. Also a door is a welcome sign to a house.

The table is perfect too. When sailing you don’t need a big bulky flat top that’s in the way. If it was big you must be able to stand on it.
There are plenty of flat surfaces around so again it’s a well though over design.

Diamond Sea Glaze door on Craigslist!!???? I feel like you guys have won the "craigslist lottery" more than once....
I have my routine...I scan Craigslist daily, Check out Defenders clearance section, browse ebay weekly, and hit every marine swap meet and auction. We have been collecting items for the boat for most of this decade and have avoided getting a few time sensitive things for right before we leave( EPIRB, life raft, batteries, electronics, etc.)
We have a similar "routine".
Pretty cool to have a boat and not need any steering.
Looks great. But that table needs a collapsible leaf that folds underneath it like in the salon. What if someone is sitting on that particular bench trying to eat soup...That beautiful floor.
This was one of my first attempts to build something with NidaCore about 5-6 years ago...the next table design will have some fun features for sure!

I have a request for you, can you turn down the music volume, is so much louder than your voices, we keep turning up and down the volume all the time. If you ever thought of selling it today market what you think ?? Been looking at cats a little I would have to put it up there just as much as a new one I would like it better than any new ones at that size. It’s just so much more thought out than the new ones easy cleaning my wife keeps saying

What kind of chair are you going to install for the cockpit? I imagine you don't want to stand all the time when underway.
We will be building a custom seat for sure. Our "to-do" list is long so that project has been pushed out a bit...it's coming!
Curious why you didn’t build in storage lockers in the seating. Its sure a lot more complex but that’s a lot of potential storage for things like the cushion rather than dragging them down inside. Just to be perfectly clear, I am in awe of your skills.
I used the seating areas for multiple 4" chases for propane, electrical, plumbing, engine control cables, and hydraulic lines for steering. There is still 50% of the area under the seating left and we will cut in inspection hatches and can use that area for additional storage. I know that everyone always wants to have as much storage as possible on a boat but on a multihull that is not always a good thing. We are a weight sensitive vessel and by making more areas to fill will only create that urge to fill them.
I didnt see any way to access that when you removed the cushions.
Teal I think you are an amazing craftsman and you do a great job of engineering usable and working designs. I love your vids and always look forward to them. I do have to ask though, where is the steering for your boat, or are you doing some modern joystick type system?
I removed the Hydraulic steering from the boat for the refit. we will be putting in the same system with all new components soon....stand by!
I'm so disappointed when these videos end..I need more more more...Great design and changes team...my big question is - will you have enclosed; sheltered seating for the helm position anywhere? Also I spotted space behind the cockpit door when hinged open - any plans or would that just be clutter?
Yes, we will ultimately build a full removable enclosure and I was thinking of building a spot to hang lines for that area.

Hi Teal, yet again another interesting video. A couple of questions (sorry about that), did you consider using the stairs cavity as another storage area ? With the cockpit table did you consider any of the following a: having it set on a hydraulic centre so the it could be coffee table height and convertible into an outside bed b: making the table top smaller but with fold out sections to make it bigger or having slide on sections that could make the table bigger c: (last one honest) did you consider putting a macerator on the garbage disposal so that food waste would be chopped up before going out to sea? I kicked around many layout ideas for the cockpit table. I will be honest and let you know that I built that table a half a decade ago and it was one of my first Nida Core projects. I have learned so much since then and plan to "wow" Linh with her dream table one day....stand by for that! I never even considered a macerator for food scraps, I guarantee you that any size food scraps that go down the chute will be 100% appreciated by the recipient...thanks for watching Glen!
Awesome job on Door and cockpit. My question is, I don't see any non skid on the deck area around the cockpit, will this be added? In its current state that deck has to be slick when wet! The work you did is amazing!
Good eye Derek! We will put the non skid down after deck hardware and our final topcoat. That will happen when we haul out next spring...thanks for watching!

Another interesting video. I was wondering if you kept a weight log to estimate the weight gain or savings throughout the renovation. If so, it might make an interesting video segment as you approach completion.
I tried to track the weight removed by saving my garbage dump weight receipts but that system quickly proved inaccurate. I did take measurements from the bridge deck to the waterline in all four corners and have been watching the waterline closely though.

How did you get the rounded edges? Does Nida Core sell rounded edge molding for you to glass into and over? Thank you in advance for your answer!
I use PVC mouldings for my edge profiles, they are inexpensive and available at most big box stores. Just scuff with a low grit sandpaper and use thickened epoxy. The bond between the PVC and NidaCore is very good but will increase in strength with every layer of glass. Build your layers until you reach your desired strength...thanks for watching!

What did you do for an anti-slip surface? It looks like you are taking your life in your hands if the deck get's wet, or are you taking up ice skating and need the practice?
We will apply the final Interlux Interdeck polyurethane non-skid finish after we get our deck hardware installed....stand by for that!
Most of your designs and workmanship are excellent; it looks great, except the steps going into the cabin, that was a bad idea that could have been solved differently. Did you consider a rounded corner table, tables don’t have to be rectangular, a free form would have gone well with rest of the cockpit.
It's a great table! I'd leave it! Would've cost a (Fortune) if all was done at a yard! And not near as nice!
Are y'all are familiar with the Ship of Theseus paradox?
I think our little refit barely qualifies but an interesting thought.
Are you concerned with the security of your door with the hinges exposed? I know in typical construction I've seen the hinges are inside to stop any tampering from would be thieves. Love the video's, keep them coming!
I did not want an inswing door , they are much easier to fail from a large wave or a large criminal. The hinge pins on our Diamond SeaGlaze door are are non-removable. A thief is a thief, if they want in, they will get in.

Are you talking about just the cockpit or the entire refit of the boat?
I would say the whole boat. And I would not expect exact weights, but most videos give time and cost. And most say weight savings but few give a idea of how much.

We removed around 2300 lbs and added back around 1600 lbs. Overall we did not save that much weight because of the addition of extra batteries, 32,000 btu's of heat /AC, washer dryer, etc. We really paid attention to every aspect of weight savings during the refit knowing that we would be adding weight in other areas. Our goal was to break even or less...not to gain. The waterline in the end did not change much because we have a displacement of 23 GRT.
When you first purchased the boat, did you have a vision of the major updates or was it more evolutionary?
The big picture vision I had the first time I stepped aboard but the small details have certainly evolved.

What is the name of the core material?
NIDA-CORE STRUCTURAL HONEYCOMB PANEL - The Nida-Core honeycombs are cellular structures with an 8 mm mesh made of polypropylene, which are used to form the core of structural sandwich panels. Their surface coating (non-woven polyester) can be laminated or glued to practically any type of material, for applications in many domains: construction, transport, yachting, industrial equipment, sports, recreation, etc. Specially made for contact and spray lamination. The polyester non-woven material present on the Nida-Core has a surface that is perfectly suited to impregnation with thermosetting resins (polyester, epoxy, etc.) The heat sealing method used to stick this non-woven material to the cellular structure provides a perfect bond. Finally, the plastic film placed under the non-woven material seals the cells and reduces resin consumption.
How did you get the radius edge on the cockpit pieces you built using nida core?
You can apply heat to NidaCore and bend it easily to lay up 3D components with vacuum bags. I used a different material and technique for my radius work called Schlulter Kerdi-Board-V. It is a kerfed high density foam designed for radius applications. Onboard Lifestyle it looked like foam in your photos. So basically you just butt the two pieces of nida core and connected the edges using the kerfed foam and laid up 8oz glass over that ?
Exactly, the strength comes with your laminations on both sides. The kerfed foam telegraphs the kerf ridges so I would skim coat a little fairing compound between each layer until the radius is true.

I was researching that Kerdi board some more. Would it be crazy to use the sheets instead of nidacore because nidacore is pretty spendy!
Looks like they make several thickness ready for waterproof tile applications. I’m thinking 8oz glass on top of that would make a pretty solid structure.

The ability to create pristine antiseptic and rugged is astounding. Only completely WHITE boat I’ve thought flawless..well almost the reverse steps hitting sleepy head... I digress. Sry
A few comments on the steps so far...think about every boat ever made and there is always one or two bunks with lower head clearance. The step is is still 30" above the bed and really not that big of an issue And, if it ever was, all you do is put your pillow at the other end of the bed...thanks for watching!

You made a common mistake with the location of the grill. Who would you like sitting with there face inches from anything that may be splattering in a pan. I think you need to switch the cook top and the sink around. Another point this is a point of exit and entrance to the seating area. If I needed to get up and I saw grease splatting I would want to go in a different direction. I’ve seen people spend hundreds of thousands of dollars designing kitchens then they put a cooktop in the middle of the island with stools inches from the counter stools. Pick up a book on basic kitchen design.
In one of your vid's I see you talking about solar. There is a company that sells USA made items, go to www.mwands.com. you will find all the items you need to last a life time, Need a windturbine. they have it.
Another great video guys but a couple of comments.
I really don't like the way the stairs encroach on the bed headspace, that's just bad design and nigh on downright dangerous. You could have just brought the stairs further into the cockpit. You've turned a double bed into a single.
The other was about the cockpit cushions. You've got cushions on a boat that can't get wet....really guys?? That's fine if your just using it a s acheap house but what the hell are you going to do if oytu go anywhere? Plenty of Fabrics out there that you could use that wouldn't mattter if they got wet.
If it bothers you, all you do is put the pillows on the opposite end of the bed. All materials we use are marine grade ...even the cushions. They are made with Sunbrella fabric with marine zippers and stitching. We just choose to stow them when it rains because who wants their cushion swimming in water for the long wet Seattle winters
