thank you for teaching me fiber glass and the care that must be in it's preparation. i think you and i are a lot alike in our finished product !!!thank you again !! i wish i could meet you guys but i'm 79 and spent my life helping others and forgot me, but that's ok i 'm not sorry. when i was young i dreamed of doing what you guys are doing sailing all over and read a lot of books about it. now i live in Eureka, ca. a coastal town with a bay and a lot of idle fishing boats. well i've rambled on long enough i love you guys and have you in my prayers all the time i am going to become one of your patrons tell my death ( long way off ) carl stout

I really like the way you add those radius inside corners, it really makes the finished job look great.

The one thing I've done differently is at transition areas, I use the tip of a paint brush to stipple the cloth into radised areas....the cloth lays down and removes air quicker than with a roller. I've noticed that Teal is a perfectionist and that is why his layups and finished work looks so nice. This wasn't an easy layup (at least for me) but the glass just seemed to fall into place for him.....a sign he has had a lot of practice! Interesting stuff.....
Great work as usual!! I don't think we will ever get bored of it. Very educational as well as inspirational. You did not mention the consistency of the epoxy, so Ill say it. THICKENED :)

Figure the weather has not been fun for y’all this last week. Hoping all is well.
After i have laid the glass down and the serface is ready for fairing, I get an very fine bladed grauting scraper and spread the bog out making fine grove lines. the secand coating fills in the groves and then you have an nice smooth serface to paint on the secend coat and with each coat fill in the voids or hollwes sand smooth and the aplly the final undercoat and then the top coat will look nice.

Hey Teal, I noticed that while you where insde the first sugerscoop, theres an plastic outlet and the plastic ones i find, i remove them because from the uv radiation ftom the sun, the plastic gets brittile over time and you only need to bump it and it crumles. i would ether take it out or replace it with a ssteel one. inspect it anyway because if its doing nothing then i would remove it and it will make the work area easy.

Jumping ahead - what are your plans for a shakedown/testing of all systems before Trip 1? A couple of weeks around the lake?
If it were me, I would have seriously considered ripping out that top shelf in the port side sugar scoop and rebuilding it. A LOT less sanding and repairs?
Another nice neat job just as I would expect. I am curious if you considered using Carbon in any area just for the security of the added strength. Stay safe.
Yes. For instance, where is the strength coming from on that particular pontoon. Say, another boat drags down on you and strikes that sugar scoop? Or worse, forward near midships or the bow? I'm sure it will be fine, I just don't understand yet how it does it. You're all doing great work. IAn inspiration.
Hi Teal, hope you are feeling better. I'd be worried about fumes from the epoxy and paints working in closed spaces. How do you deal with that?

Hello Teal, What type of rollers/covers are you using? I find it difficult to find ones that don't come apart, like the foam type. Yours seem to do very well. I've had good luck with Glasscoaters, but they come in large diameters. I like the small ones you use.

Great as always. Curious why you are so picky on the glass fabric when you are just going to cover it up and you will never see it at all. That’s a tremendous amount of time for something that you won’t see and adds no extra benefit. Should I be that picky about this when I’m Laing glass?
Thanks T.J., the reason behind this is because this area will be utilized and we don't want to get snagged on a fiberglass shard or burr when going in and out barefoot. Those cause nasty cuts that irritate and infect your skin.
I'm curious, is there some advantage to fairing and painting inside the locker? Like does it protect the fibreglass and resin from moisture or something? Cause it certainly seems like a lot of extra work, time and money.
Epoxy can break down with UV over time so it's always a good idea to protect it with a barrier coat. Plus, we will be using those lockers for storage and will be in and out of them daily so it will be nice to have a smooth clean interior.
How do you decide what weight cloth to use?
Well sir, being fairly new to your site I have been wondering just what was in those "sugar scoops" originally! Were there engines in them? I noticed the outboard hanging on the transom, so is that the New propulsion system or just temporary? It seems like you are really going the extra mile in order to make those scoops "look" good, but for what? I know, lots of dumb questions for a newby, but I am really interested!
Where would you purchase your Nida-core from in the Seattle area? I'm trying to get some shipped to Alaska for my galley refit.

What type of epoxy resin are you using that you do not have to seal it to cure. Some resins cure aerobically (open air) and some are anaerobic (closed air; gel coat or wax)???
We use West System Epoxy. Always. Love this stuff. Works awesome.

Goes from “I got three layers to do” then says “all I have todo is fair sand and paint. Fire has been lit. The bush is burning and I can feel the flame threw the screen. Watch the young one, her attitude says a lot about what happens behind closed doors. Lol. Best of luck, don’t cheat yourself out of a good project with so little left todo.

No, its not OSB, just exposed marine plywood.

Why doesn’t anyone use polyester resins? Seems everyone uses the West system epoxy

How come you remove the out board. I follow many other live aboard and yours is the only one I see not permanently installed in place.
