- This is Alfa Rome Stelvio. Alfa's first-ever SUV and inspired by the famous Giulia. I have the 2L petrol engine which pumps 280 hp and 400 Nm of torque. I must wait another day for the monster version Stelvio Quadrifoglio. Does this Stelvio have what it takes to compete with the Germans? The likes of Audi Q5 or BMW X3? On my second Stelvio, tried a Porsche Cayenne but missed the agility of the Alfa and leased a 2020 Lusso model. Best value and best fun!
Beautiful car and a great review. If I had to choose between Audi, BMW of Alfa, I would choose the Alfa.
To lease. Would never buy a Fiat Chrysler product and keep it for over 3 years, unless you need to launder large sums of money.

I own a Stelvio Quadrifoglio, and to me it's the perfect car. I can go to Best Buy and throw a 65" OLED in the back, open the dual-pane panoramic sunroof, and then smoke Mustang GT's, Camaro V8s-hell almost anything-on the way home.
But the real reason I bought it was for the carbon-fiber steering wheel and its aluminum column-mounted paddle shifters. It is simply amazing.
The interior quality is much better than most reviews claim and I've had no reliability issues. It handles like an M3 but faster. I love the in-dash screen that doesn't stick up like an out of place iPad glued to the dashboard like everyone else has. And the analog guages, I love them.
Just the whole car is perfect to me. The only thing I would change is to go with something more like Chevy's latest magnetic ride control so the ride could soften up more when it's in soft mode, and let the exhaust sound open more in Dynamic.

Old cliches from 30 years ago when everybody made crap but the Germans threw money at the problems and satisfied the customer whereas the Italians were arrogant when working with the consumer....Bad business practices put Alfa behind the Germans in popularity ...it wasn't the vehicles...Alfas were always Better, Faster, Lighter!!

I have been following your reviews since the beginning and have always enjoyed them. This one is my favorite because you give such a balanced review of the vehicle. Italian cars as a rule are exceptional at some things and downright weird at others. You have articulated that so eloquently. Good job.
Thank you, Robert, much appreciated. It has taken me a while to get a feel for the cars, recognise the differences, the ups, the downs. I didn't want to be a newbie who just trashes the car reviews, especially being self-taught. Today, I am a lot more confident to give me opinion and I am not afraid to say it out loud. At the initial stage, it was also politics, brands want you to continually play nice but I will always be honest in my reviews. It's just a principle for me and a sense of integrity.

Great comments! The only thing that really matters with a car test is the natural smile that comes up on the reviewer face every time he/she drives a Stelvio. And it happens really frequently...
I love Alfa, and have owned two of them in my younger days. These are cars you buy with your heart and not your head..and going by this review I'm feeling nothing has changed with this brand in that context. I would imagine the depreciation on this model would be substantial and it would possibly be best to purchase after a few years if it was something that you really wanted to pursue.
This is an antiquated thought. Alfas of old are a completely different breed. Pure sport, designed with racing DNA and engineering. Think de dion read ends, 4 wheel discs, all alloy engines etc. the new Alfa Giulia and Stelvio are modern cars that you can buy with common sense. This reviewer is biased and honestly speaks like a woman not a car reviewer. I own this car and it’s a great family hauler that’s in line with Audi, BMW and the like.
That car makes all the other SUVs in that bracket look like dinosaurs!

Just got my NEW STELVIO an Yes I Just LOVE IT
My NEW STELVIO is just Amazing to Drive nimble quick and easy to Maneuver, I'm still learning all the awesome features an getting to know the ones I didn't even realize I had, SUCH a Cool Ride mine is Volcano black metallic with Red leather interior, Yes it's Beautiful I'm so HAPPY, I looked at the BMW AUDI MBenz an Lexus and was not impressed at all then I saw the Alfa Romeo STELVIO an was Sold right away NOTHING out there compares to that STELVIO Yes I'm a HAPPY OWNER, VERY WELL PLEASED.
@@tshawn1231 I got last summer my second stelvio. The first one was a MY2019 Diesel 210 HP on which I did 90k miles with no issues. Now I got a MY2020 veloce, same engine but better handling thanks to stiffer suspension and bigger wheels. I didn’t regret my choice even one second. Being a company car I had to wait for it, due to Covid and had to drive a BMW X2. I know it’s a lower class model, but I didn’t find at all all those features people are so mad about. Handling doesn’t even come close, fuel economy? Average. Planted on the road? Forget i. I was concerned in every fast turn on motorways as the car was quite wobbly. Sun visors without a light. Flimsy plastics on the dashboard. Unreliable Bluetooth connection with my iPhone. No radio station search from the steering wheel, only form the nob in the center tunnel. I could go on for more. Stelvio is perfect ? No, there’s still room for improvements, but the BMW is even worse. No German perfection! One blame on FCA. I don’t know what it’s like in US but here many dealers are still doing a poor job at promoting these fantastic cars. Audi does much better for sure. And this hurts the sales.

@@paulmcgee1867 Brakes need some get used to for some drivers because it's a fly-by-wire system by Continental.
So, it's more the pedal position and not the force applied that determines how much it will break. ...and it breaks very well because the mechanical parts are from Brembo with one piston for the rear and two pistons in the front calipers.

I wanted something different from BMW or audi and Mercedes so I tried the stelvio and I absolutely love it to me the interior is beautiful specially at night all lit up respect to FCA alfa has came along way from it's dodgy past

My car, my color. I love driving this car.
The new Alfa Face lift called MY 2020, coming on all new models, has addressed all the issues you had regarding the interior quality of the car..There's a new and better layed out Infotainment, which is touch screen, better quality and feel of the dials and switches, and some advanced features regarding the driving.
Exterior, engine, and chassis stay the same, but those improvements have really upped the standards, which will now put the AR at a par with the Germans...This is the opinion of a few reviewers who have already teasted the car...Not my opinion by the way!

Man, I have a 19 sport. I can tell you they might as well not even put an infotainment system in the car - it's awful. Mine has navigation in it - took me 10 minutes to even enter a destination - felt like I was in 2001.

The start-stop button on the wheel is great because you don't have to take your eyes off the road to use it. Being 100% Italian, I am allowed to say Italians are nuts.
It seems like every engineer in the world decided, at the exact same time, that the 2.0L turbo is the best tradeoff ever, and none of them are right. It's good to hear your views on the on/off nature of these high strung turbos. You reinforce my thoughts exactly.

Hello Anna, cool review on the Stelvio. I hope that Alfa Romeo will bring over the Quadrifoglio for you to review very soon. BTW, those "Swiss Roads" look very narrow & curvy. Must be kinda tricky to drive on those at times.

Absolute true, namely, Stelvio QV is the only acceptable option even for me as an Alfista. However, Giulia is superb with no matter which engine, literally!
That was mine opinion too before. The problem for me is as I wanted the stelvio for a daily car, I drive 70k km per year. So I chose the strongest diesel with some chip tuning by squadra Netherlands. It's also a wonderful engine I have to say. Of course not a qv but still plenty of joy in it!

I myself had chosen to test the worst rigid rigvio quadrifoglio, to get a wonderful sound. Now waiting for your next movie. Ps! The beautiful red dress matched the black lacquer.
Hi Ingvar and a big thank you, I think Quadrifoglio suits the characteristics of this car but this is true, I can imagine how agressive it is. I've driven Giulia Quadrifoglio recently (review coming soon) but this is a saloon and let's be honest, aerodynamics do play a major part
You are welcome Anna! Yes, of course it is with this car but with a motor from From Portofolio that you removed two cydlinders on, then things happen. Those who have driven Giulia quadrifoglio as well as Stelvio quadrifoglio prefer the latter to give you the thumbs up and support you.

I really hope so, Andrew. They do have quite a bit of work to do, but I think once these have been addressed, this will be a very strong competitor. At the moment, many avoid purchasing, it's just a little bit too awake in an awkward way
@@AnnaOnRoads I don't know what your expertise is but my Stelvio is a great car ! Brakes, not a problem for me, smooth braking; transmission .... great, shifts are quick and hardly noticable.

you nailed this. I have been test driving one. Very torn about it. It does make some wieird high pitched ringing noise and I am not sure why. Not always though, does that maybe mean that my way of driving is overheating it? The dealer is not sure and can't recreate it .... they say.

Ok Anna, i feel like a tamed wild animal, now... You found about the only SUV that I can accept to Drive without having to drag me in screaming and kicking... And with brown leather interior... You clearly know how to speak to an old-school Frenchman :). I love Alfa. Those Yellow brake calipers go really well with the Green paint too. But yes you hammered it on the head : Alfa went a bit crazy with the Price, didn't they? And at the end, I would still go with the Giulia with that same engine.. although, you know What? I am dreaming of an "Alfa 6C": something beteween a 4C and the super-exclusive 8C: with the 2.7 V6 of the Stelvio QV. 2 versions: the fire-breathing 510 HP of today, plus a 350/400 HP version, slightly tamed-down. .. Hey Mr. Alfa community manager, assuming you read Anna's vidéo comments: that car would sell like hot cakes !!!!

great commentary on human interactions with each other and with an Italian machine be it a car or a motorcycle. Italians make machinery to enter into a love hate relationship. No other country can seem to elicit such a human response with their cars

Fantastic Review, and I have seen many. Best road response driving experience I found compared to the three I test drove; Jaguar, Volvo and Audi . It was no contest and an easy decision to go with the 2020 Stevlio Ti Sport Nero Edizione. Everything else is just transportation.....
Good review. Sounds like AR will need to improve the car a little. I think this vid helps people narrow choices who may be shopping 4 more higher end SUVs. Good job.
With this kind of driving, I'm even surprised you didn't hit the 20 liter mark! On my Giulia Veloce (same 280 bhp engine), I'm doing about 10 liters per 100 km. The car is of course lighter, but I always drive in dynamic mode... and not particularly slowly to be honest! So, don't worry too much about the consumption figures, I've seen a lot worse and remember the Stelvio is so much lighter than its competitors, that mostly weight about 2000 kg, if not more. 30000 km with my Giulia and I just love this car... and mind you, I had quite a few fast cars, including german ones. I guess I therefore can tell, can't I? :-)
That being said, I love your reviews and the Swiss scenery. I've been all over the place in Switzerland, both privately and professionally and have a bunch of old friends overthere, particularly in good old Lozärn (die Lichtstadt), where you seem to be living or originate from. Great place, great people... Keep up the good work and see you someday on those beautiful roads, who knows?

I think Giulia Veloce is a much better choice, I've filmed it back last year. This Stelvio was just a little all over the place and I felt it just doesn't get it together. Yes, it is lighter and you certainly feel it, hence the excellent handling.

I really dont care about money honey, i drive the Stelvio with a huge smile on my face every day. No BMW does that for me anymore i'm afraid.
Edit: Don't forget the sleaper gear (8th) on the ZF box. Always downshift manually if you want to punch it!
