For many years, the PC version of GW2 has been under siege by skids, people who use mods online either for the sake of their own entertainment, or to purely just ruin the experience for others. Tonight, we shall be taking a look at how the game ended up in this state, and interview content creators who have been affected by this increasingly oppressive issue...

this entire fucking situation was lead to because of these white knights who thought combatting hackers was the salutation to the situation. did the white knights solve anything? no. did the white knights only make things worse? Y E S. all they did was feed the hackers the tools to ruin gw2 on pc. they used said weapon against said hacker, hacker notices and tried to find used weapon (first "skid be gone" then the banning), hacker then gets a hold of said weapon and then turns it against the innocent players of the game. if these white knights didn't fuck with the hackers and piss them off/feed them the weapons to kill gw2 we wouldn't be here rn. the hackers had no way to ban or use the "anti-cheat" on other players. all they had was the simple hacks and nothing more. everything the hackers got outside the buff and boss hacks they were given by the white knights.
had the hackers not been given anything it would have most likely taken them longer to figure out or even not figure out at all. not progress the levels of damage they could course. by the time they find out and manage to do these things gw2 would have none or almost no people left on it making it pointless. all the white knights have done is accelerate pc to the point of no return (bans). as for white knights actively hunting down hackers was up there as the worst way to deal with them. "ah yes. lets use hacks to fight the hackers. this TOTALLY wont course more harm to the innocent players or worse piss off the hackers to where they crash the game" actually the most stupid idea with the idea of banning. not only that it makes you just as bad as the hackers no questions asked, you use hacks to beat a hacker. you are no better than they are and only make the game worse for the innocents.
the banning was the worst idea when it was found out since IT WAS LITRALLY ONLY A MATTER OF TIME until the hackers got a hold of it. which is exactly what happened leading to where we are now. as far as im concerned while yes the hackers are to blame for this you can point every other finger at these white knights for agitating them and giving them the tools to ruin gw2

Not a day has passed since EA released anti-cheat and people on modding discord have already encountered a cheater. Well EA, I expected as much.

Man, this whole thing saddens me. I remember when I first got the game on Christmas day in 2016. Over the years, I've played for 1500+ hours and it ended up becoming my uncontested favorite game. I wasn't able to add my thoughts to the doc, so I'd like to say something here.
Even with how little I play online, every few matches there'd be people using damage/invincibility hacks, playing as bosses, etc. Worst of all, sometimes the servers would be completely destroyed, whether that be through everyone becoming delivery chompers/goats, or your lobby just crashes and disconnects you. The ban tools being leaked completely cut me off from playing online all together. Despite all these issues, I just played offline with mods. I grinded all of 2023 to get max rank, and I was able to achieve it! But, now that doesn't matter because everyone's levels are now completely wiped and my accomplishment means nothing. The new anticheat worries me as well. I feel like banning ALL mods including ones that only change visual things is not a good idea. You don't see people being banned from playing Minecraft servers because they're using texture/shader packs. If you're never going to be able to use mods in any way, now innocent people (such as myself) that use mods offline and barely play multiplayer run the risk of being banned from playing. The anticheat seems very sketchy and that it can be easily bypassed, so what's the point? It's awful seeing the state that the game is in right now, and I don't see it improving any time soon. Great job on this documentary, by the way!

i will explain exactly how the ban works, the first part is fully correct, the level 46 is a useless visual, when you are mastered you are infact level 46. but, what the ban does do is instead if setting you to master, it sets you to atleast over 2 billion prestiges. which just by the fact it is close to the max number that gw2 can handle, it makes sense on why the banned player crashes the lobby when joining a lobby. ( and another correction, gw1's ban tools getting leaked is bs, bfn one gets shared around more and more every day )
Lt Dark Ring, you made some great points along with your buddies. If Mr. JT's video wasn't bad enough, this video is the pure pinnacle of the incidents. In advance to the September 18th incident, it is clear that GW2 was most likely under developed. Examples include such as game breaking bugs, visual errors, oversights or bugs that are classified due to how dangerous they could be. We most likely have a chance of the servers permanently shutting down due to the skids who are bad at the game and have no dad. TLDR: GW2 could shut down forever due to exploits.
15:50 Skid-B-Gone was never going to be released to the public. Someone in our friend group decided to turn on everyone after being exposed and leaked several mods, such as timer freeze, instant round end, and Skid-B-Gone. This, along with the poor quality of the imitation "anticheat" mods, is what caused it to get released.
Additionally, NM didn't help with the creation of Skid-B-Gone. He only tested it.
19:00 This isn't what happens. Level 46 is purely visual, and the server handles levels over 45 just fine. When you're "banned", all of your character stats are set to 2 billion. This causes the server to get overloaded when you try to join, and it crashes.
23:16 There is no scan. There are checks, and they are not done constantly. I optimized the mod as much as possible, so checks are only run when necessary.
23:30 This is not Skid-B-Gone.
24:15 There are no constant checks or an update loop. The server is only under strain when a skid is being blown up, and the lag clears up a few seconds after the skid dies or leaves.
24:30 It does not check the server or turn people into delivery chompers.
Every moment in the 2020's has made this documentary all the more interesting.

Well, I don't have problems with most mods online unless they cause player to become invincible or allowing them to ban others. For me it's fun and challenging to fight bosses or unused things (To this day I remember that some hacker online saud that he likes to play robo-zombie, because he can't be eaten by chompers). I totally agree with that one comment, Skids are like hydra - you cut off one head and two will take their place. Trying to fight them just made the problem even worse. Even I few times used mods, but only to change UI or unlock things. I was lucky enough to miss big incidents with the game, but currently I'm only playing GW1 until situation will be established.
Also, if I had to say who to blame for these problems i would say pretty much everyone. Skids - They started messing with game. Other players - Unintentionally made problem grow bigger while tryung to fight with skids. EA and PopCap - they are just lazy and don't care about their games and community. In terms of anticheat - I know many people are happy about it, but I will stay pessimistic. It might cause even more issues or it might be ineffective and it's really hard to predict. It might also make some people quit the game, like people who create mods. I think we reached the point where return is not possible.
As a pc player I’m really happy that they decided to add anti cheat in gw2.
I slowly lost interest in playing the game bc of lots of the issues stated like bans data loss skids and I might be able to get into gw2 again after they update the game
it fixed nothing and just made things worse for players who just wanted to mod for their own fun, and ofc ruined performance for almost all.
As somebody who used to play gw2 on my PC daily, i can confirm that the skid problem is STUPIDLY annoying to deal with.
I usually played on Europe and NA Servers. And i'd play really early on, and i'd be met by bosses such as Hypno Flower or Sunflower Queen, rarely they'd be on the zombie side.
However when they were, they'd mostly use stuff such as Robo-Zombie, or other stuff such as Baron Von Batz, or would constantly spawn zen senseis.

My opnion on the Anti-Cheat is really divided, while i MIGHT come back to GW2 from time to time, since the skid problem SHOULD be gone, this worries me that mods who are innocent such as Mashed Photato or mods that change visuals, as you mentioned, and even mods who aren't allowed on online such as Project Visionary, which is meant for private play, won't be usable anymore.
Another thing that should also be considered is how the other shooter games, mostly BFN, which its anticheat has been heavily bypassed already by people, is slowly starting to get more skids, such as godmodders,damage buffers,and outright stuff thats not meant to be playable, such as the gnome meant for the scrapped mode,
and abilities too, such as the Iceberg Lettuces Shield are popping up a lot more.
As for GW1, i don't see much ways skids can ruin that game.
I have NEVER seen someone play as a boss in gw1 nor mod it to the extreme, which is what gw2 manages to succeed on.
Its probably really clear all the shooters will receive this EA Anticheat, which sucks for gw2, but is really good for the other two, being GW1 and BFN, as those games are not really modded as much from my knowledge.

I feel even if the anti cheat system does do something. Hackers and modders will eventually find a way to work around it, just as they've constantly been creating counters against each other.

I'd just like to mention that my form response pretty much mentions that "the SaveGW2 movement was a joke because it was biting more than it could chew, since all it did was fix the saving issue but not the server bugs," along with other stuff that involved me ranting about PC GW2 being about modding and how that's its entire identity, and when UA-camrs do play mods, they only play shovelware mods, which is really saddening.
The only thing I can contribute to the conversation is that I got blocked by those who were spearheading the SaveGW2 movement, but overall, what I said still holds true. My main issue prior to this entire mess was just people wanting to endure skids over and over expecting change, complaining along the way, and not trying to play offline mods to substitute. I'm only referring to people who only have PCs.
Like, a solution was right there, but everyone decided to proceed with the definition of insanity instead. I ain't blaming them for not wanting to, since they might think MP is more exciting, but, like, really passing up custom characters, boss hunts, etc. just to hope for one clean lobby?
Rant about the community aside, unironically blame groomerbones for this entire mess, since it was confirmed that he leaked Skid-B-Gone, buff hacks, round ender, time freeze, and the GW1 profile once he was outed, which caused the modern MP experience a lot of people essentially dealt with prior to the banning exploit.

Dude when hackers crash the servers man they always do it at the last point at turf (I’m rank 6) and I lose all the exp and coins and it’s just frustrating

I know it’s functionally hard to implement this, but I actually really enjoy it if a hacker spawns in as a boss that isn’t invincible. Even though they are OP, the extra challenge adds a lot of spice to this game.

Im the one of 2 people who still has for this game, the series and the people working at Popcap and EA....... also pvz3 is an ok game

fun fact, my account has quite a few glitches as well as a quite useful one,
for example if the following hacks are being used:
character
skins
damage
fly and invincibility
and I am playing cactus, I will randomly die with no rhyme or reason every 30 seconds,
and no, this is not the hacker itself killing me as it will happen even if someone is simply spectating and is not doing anything else.
the only hack I enjoy when present is the delivery character hack. Delivery chomper's floatiness, sheer mobility, good damage and rocket jump makes him a solid choice if he's up against the regular classes.
this situation really reminds me of LBP PS3 and how so many modders destroyed the online aspect of the game. Even the PS4 version (the only LBP title that is active, the others got shut down) of LBP3 isn't safe as the servers there have been currently shut down for like 3 months because some new exploit was found.
Skids & Hackers are indeed malicious people they attempt to play pranks but they’re just making us hate playing a video games you have my sympathy PC Players

I play on PlayStation and recently Xbox, I feel really sad for the PC players that have to go through the madness.
I'm new to the PC version and I'd say as of now skids are in one of three to four games but it varys on how bad they are
I’d recently bought Gw2 on steam deck after having over 1000 hours on console and I actually hadn’t came across that many hackers in game. I may had been lucky but even so, with the first few encounters, me and my friend found them hilarious. Especially for me as after playing Gw2 with no support for years, it was starting to get stale and this (in a kind of twisted way) brought a breath of fresh air to the game.
But obviously, after the first few encounters I discovered that they could do things like crash your lobby and with the newest bug; levels being reset, I actually think that I’m done with PC Gw2 already. 😂
And it’s not like I’m even mad about it not being playable on steam deck anymore because if EA wouldn’t of added the anticheat, I wouldn’t have carried on playing it anyway.
So good riddance to pc gw2, I’m going back to ps4 where I’ll spend the rest of my time on before the servers shut down.

I remember at some points there were hackers in turf that would just go over to the other side and gesture with the enemy team. That wasn’t so bad but also now there’s the minus levels :(
It’s unfortunate because those who think they are helping the community and the game by fighting cheaters with the best intentions end up making the game worse for everyone because they create tools that cheaters use to make the game worse. And those few people in the frostbite modding server who discovered the exploit and propagated it not considering how bad it would get when it was inevitably leaked
North America West servers had major issues yesterday for about an hour, resolved itself though. As for cheaters, I’m not aware of any but have noticed I die way faster than I feel I should the rare times I venture into PvZ

the whole banning exploit affected those games as well, but outside of that, don't think you really see that many on GW1 n BFN
I've played BFN for more than 1000 hours and I've only seen 2 Hackers in giddy park. Also I recommend Asian server of BFN cuz it's just so peacful...

In my experience, I only used mods to unlock one character. Besides that, I love this game, I have it since the launch date (over 1300+ hours) and It's a shame what is it since 2019. Hopefully the anticheat will make this game great again, because now it is a shadow of what it was.

from what ive heard, the ea anticheat will prevent modding altogether, even singleplayer mods
in my opinion this update will be a disaster and it will completely kill the game, as lets be real, mods are the only thing keeping it afloat
lets hope we can still play on an older version (the current as of writing this version) to escape the anticheat once it comes out
I'm a pc player, and I wanna say, that I somehow genuinely avoided ban issues, and "9/10 lobby got a skid" situation. But the rank plate cr@p that caused by EA!!!... I just more and more want get a console to play peacefully.

I am both a TF2 player, and a PC gw2 player. Usually when cheaters join i can deal with it. But the moment it restricts gameplay or makes it unfair rather than fighting a simple boss that's when i get angry over it.
I wouldn't mind fighting a sombrero super bean if you could kill it.
This what happens when an unstoppable force vs an immovable object they repel each other. This is sadly a war that will most likely truly will never end cause neither can defeat the other side only repealing each other’s attempts on eachother.

Im pc player, and its very strange for me bcs i I bought the game last week, and i can say that i gotted like 5 skid or hacked games max. Idk but i never felt that bad like other people make seem, and i think isnthat i have an ssd and when skids change a map i can fastly exit the lobby. I only hope that the Ea fix help the game.
while im happy EA now is finaly taking action to make the game less populated with hackers, i do not like that they had to implement an Anti cheat on the kernel level. they killed the game for all Linux users, who are now forced to dual boot to windows (wich in easy terms means they have there main linux setup along with a smaller windows setup) to play the game, and even then the anticheat will spy on the system. that should be illegal worldwide.
unless EA makes the anti cheat non kernel level along with it being less invasive / spyware, along with making the game replayable under Linux i dont think that this update was a good change for the game.
hackers allready bypassed the anticheat and the softlock exploit still works on older patches, making them able to still ruin the fun for people that dont want this bs anticheat.
as a famous person once said: "anti cheats are better at banning innocent players than actually banning the people that it was designed for"
and as a side note, Skids could mean Script Kiddies, thats what i think atleast.
when it comes to modding GW2, im fine with it depending on what it does: if its purely visual (skin, higher fov (wich can be done without mods), day night cycle etc) its ok. coin hacks along with spawnable plants / zombies, grey area in my eyes. playing as a weaker character, its still cheating, but more moraly okay. if its done on a private multiplayer match, its ok. same for rebalances if they are tested on private servers. mods that make the experience worse for others (bosses, hacks etc) are just bad, bannable.
"but what about mods on multiplayer servers, should they be allowed?" EA should probably implement something like valves sv_pure. if its visual (hud, graphics config) then its allowed on multiplayer, everything else wont. let the community make servers of there own where they change this pure state:
-1 is all mods go (aka, a hackers wet dream)
0 most mods work, aside from ones blacklisted by the server host
1 only graphics mods like a hud, fov or crosshair are allowed
2 no mods at all

Update: it did work, but the anti cheat update came out, so I just quit
I bought the game on PC when on Steam it was like $5 and I was using mods to have fun in the story mode.. three f*cking days later I can't play the fucking game because it says "You have lost connection from the EA SERVERS" WHAT THE F*CK MAN, I WAS JUST PLAYING THE SAME GAME ON CONSOLE, WHAT IS THE F*CKING DIFFERENCE!

those only happened recently so I couldn't fit it in.
But from what I've gathered, those can easily be fixed through the use of xp mods, and with popcap having not saying anything about it, people have just started using those to fix it themselves

Ngl, gw2 is on a complete downfall. Probably the best place to play it on is Playstation at the moment cause it doesn't seem very toxic and not many cheaters. Gw2 on xbox is not in the best position at the moment. We have a lot of cheaters like people using strike packs, xim and zens and pretty much all top 30 players use some sort of these attachments to give them an unfair advantage. Players such as beanieboofun, bk, aderinex, derp and other all are top players and use attachments. The most popular one are xims which allow you to play with a keyboard and mouse on xbox while getting all the benefits of a controller player, pathetic ik but not much we can do. And as u can see pc gw2 is terrible rn. You can barely even play the game and a popular xbox player named velvq was the one that leaked the pc ban tools. Good thing it's pretty much fixed but we still have people use mods. Pvz gw2 overall is on a complete downward drop, shame how the game I grew up with is slowly being ruined but not much we can do at the moment 🤦♂️🤷♂️
Gw2 on xbox and Playstation are really competitive at the moment but we see alot of toxicity on xbox. People doxxing and stealing credit card info.
I just hope this anti-cheat will fix everything (probably won't) even if it means modding will basically be impossible. It's a sacrifice I'm willing to take.

I won’t lie I haven’t even played this game for a long time, and even though I’m on console, I just feel bad the pc side faces all these things
I feel after done reaching max rank 313 in gw1 (console) I will never see myself play any pvz shooters ever again console or pc unless helping a friends that the only time you will see me
is so sad to see the shooter getting destroyed by the war of this I enjoy these games now just pain play it no fun for me
also the anti cheat i doubt it will it work if work how long before they break it time will only tell

As someone who had a russian ps4 account, and experienced the game in its purest form for like a year or so... Only for the sanctions to kick in and make me unable to get any more ps plus, ultimately locking up multiplayer forever. I enjoyed everything singleplayer had to offer and that's it, game over. I can relate to many that couldn't play anymore, either because of skids or server ban.
Btw I sold my console, there is nothing to do literally every game is unplayable and you can't buy anything. GL GW fans
Sanctions did nothing but literally anger the general populous against the west more. And it didn’t even work anyways.
some people count the removal of modding as a negative for the anti-cheat
given at to how it enables hackers in the first place its nessesary to nuke it in order to put the game in a decent state again

About the server thing, I play on PC and I can CONFIRM that Asian server is DEAD. You can find a turf lobby in NA server but that's it. Other servers are either unplayable or dead.
It’s honestly such a disappointment that these kinds of players exist, I loved this game as a kid and still do and wanted to eventually get it on multiplayer but like rn since modding support for the game is just done for. I kinda now don’t want to get it, EA could’ve done something with 343i did with Halo the Master Chief Collection on pc, by making a separate version of GW2 with no Anti-Cheat and have the regular base version with Anti-Cheat. But no EA just completely kills modding support for the game XP
Skids won’t have to be a problem also because just like mcc, the non anti cheat version doesn’t support online multiplayer but the regular versions does with anti cheat so yeah :v

As a pretty active player with 1000+ hours, I have my opinions.
I feel like I meet hackers every two to three weeks, and its honestly just a little annoying. One lobby switch, 10 seconds, and everythings back to normal. The whole "being held hostage in a lobby" has happened to me three times in total and guess what, you can simply restart the game and join a new lobby! The whole banning situation was pretty shit for the estimated 5% that were affected, those being 'celebrities', GT3 members and so on. These people will then of course feel like the game is unplayable and is overrun by hackers, and since they are the people that everyone listens to, everyone assumes that pc gw2 is hellish landscape. I happily played gw2 during the banning situation and so did the the other people in the full lobbies. Honestly I think the whole anti-cheat-development or skid-hunting is a massive waste of time, and the people actively engaging in an arms race with the skids or youtubers making the 1000st "GW2 is dead and unplayable" are only giving the skids more attention, making the problem ultimately worse.
Tl;dr Lobbies are completely fine, just not for the 3% of people that are known in the community and then cry about how dead and shit pc gw2 is. People that play the game casually (or celebrities with alts?) will barely have problems with hackers.

It went to shit when popcap thought it was an amazing idea to remove anti cheat.
GW2 PC is so unfortunate. The players show that there’s enough interest in the game, but EA can only give peanuts for fixes… and somehow create a new issue in the process.
when it comes to modding gw2, would you call modding in coins or just unlocking everything as long as you don't outright cheat in multiplayer unethical or fair ?
When mods have that much power in a mostly pvp game, probably thats the point when modding shouldn't be allowed
