DL142 Google Nexus 5X Bootloop Fix? - RAM IC Reflow

  • In this video i experiment reflowing the RAM mounted on top of the Snapdragon CPU in my old Nexus 5X phone that was bootlooping.
    Update 17-01-2013: Although the phone does seem to be working ok it does occasionally reboot, do i don't think this is any kind of permanent fix. Maybe reballing with leaded solder would be a solution but it's really not worth the effort to do that. So i decided to wipe the phone again and resell it on ebay as faulty.

    The designers of this crappy phone should be awarded a Nobel Prize.

    I've pulled emmc chips and read them out for recovery on friends Samsung's but my nexus also failed from a low battery flash corruption as did the galaxy's. Reflashed that sucker 3 odd times, fixed it every attempt before calling it a day. Didn't know this was another fault, good job

    What is the peak temperature you used for the reflow?
    I can't figure out what kind of solder these phones are using, I have a Google Pixel and I assume it is lead-free, would 240°C be enough?

    Just to update everyone: Although the bootloop issue did seem to be resolved i did start noticing random reboots after the re-work so i opted to wipe the phone and sell it on ebay as spares or repair because i wasn't very interested in continuing to fix it. I do wonder if i should have used more heat and let it re-flow longer. Re-flowing ICs like this is often a temporary fix. Your mileage may vary. Good luck!

    So has anyone tried swapping out nexus 6p no bootloop issues (just cracked digitizer) parts into the nexus 5x like processor, ram chips, anything? Can it be done?

  • @vaualbus
    @vaualbus 6 років тому +1

    Same with mine 6p. OEM bootloader locked and I'm fucked can't flash the fix ROM for it.

    Nice to see a methodical approach actually using flux and a hot air rework station instead of the usual 12 year old that "fixed" his GTX 480 with a hairdryer.
    The 5x and 6p were both plauged with issues, and I'm not 100% sure what the bootloops were caused by, I think there were multiple causes. I've heard bad NAND flash on them, as well as the excess thermal issues causing cracked solder balls.
    I owned my 6p for quite a while, and had a custom ROM on it since day one. I sold it on craigslist, but flashed the original google firmware right before selling it, and it bootlooped on him within a couple days. I'd say perhaps that was a NAND flash failure?
    The "fix" rom for these phones was always disabling the high performance cores, so I'm really not sure how that would help.
    It sucks though because these phones were awesome, but plauged with issues.
    Maybe use your repaired 5x as a youtube phone, and let us know how it holds up!

    What flux product did you used for that? Did you leave it on? Or had it cleaned in an ultrasound bath?

      I cleaned with flux cleaner and IPA then blow dried with an air-duster.

    You should have rooted it and installed a custom kernel with an aggressive thermal throttler module. That might help keep it going for a while

    I've done this to but it's just a temporary fix. The boot loop comes right back. It did give me time to recover the data from it and part it out also.

      Yes, same experience here, it lasted long enough for me to make sure i had a copy of everything that was on it and did a factory reset. I later sold it as faulty.

      yup also same here but if you do packing a little bit of tissue on the IC and then tight the screw hope will be work perfectly can check

    Is the chip heat sinked in anyway? Try sticking a thin copper heatspreader on the chip with thermal tape or a thermal pad to keep some downward pressure on the chip. I hate lead free solder. Its a right PITA!

      How hot does the CPU actually get? Burn your finger hot (60+C) or just warm?

    • @DextersTechLab
      @DextersTechLab  6 років тому +2

      Yes it does have a heatspreader which is in contact with the magnesium chassis

    I had the same problem with my Nexus 5 (non X) which turned out to be caused by a faulty power button. Soldering in a new power button fixed it, but was a royal pain in the ass because they're about the size of a grain of rice.

      I have a Nexus 5 as well, yes the power button is a notorious failure point on those!

      same problem with mine Nexus 5. I replaced the power button but its not always working so I guess it needs resoldering

  • @cspower7259
    @cspower7259 6 років тому +1

    Whoo. Good fix was surprised it work. Is it because the ram chips on top? Or is it the balls under the chip.

    • @electronash
      @electronash 6 років тому +1

      CS Power
      Could be either tbh, but I guess it depends on how hot the CPU gets.
      I would imagine that the CPU (SoC) still gets much hotter than the RAM during general use.
      And, since the RAM is stacked on top of the CPU, the RAM is using the metal shield and the magnesium casing as a heatsink.
      A fair bit of the heat from the CPU will dissipate through the BGA balls, and then the vias and PCB ground planes.
      But maybe the temperature difference between the CPU and RAM could be causing the solder to crack?
      It does look like it's the solder between the RAM and CPU that's causing the main issue though, as the RAM would have heated up WAY faster than the CPU during the reflow.
      (I realise that the average temperatures of the CPU and RAM will probably equalise a bit after the phone has been on for a while, but it probably is the thermal cycling which ends up cracking the solder balls. I'm not an expert on thermodynamics though, so I could well be wrong. lol)

      The thing with a lot of the reflow "fixes" on things like the Xbox 360 RROD and PS3 YLOD is that the GPU / CPU are often not really heated up enough to properly reflow them.
      Most of the crazier "fixes", like wrapping the Xbox in towels (please don't ever do this. lol) is just causing the motherboard to warp very slightly, which sometimes lets the solder balls make better contact with the board again.
      Eventually those consoles almost always fail again after a few more thermal cycles, maybe lasting days or weeks.
      To properly reflow larger chips like those, it's apparently best to always have a pre-heater for the whole underside of the board (at around 100C).
      Along with a good PCB holder, that helps prevent the board from warping during reflow, and helps heat the pads more evenly too.
      Then, a temperature probe on top of the chip, plus a temp-controlled hot air or IR heater will ensure the proper reflow profile.
      I've yet to attempt soldering a BGA chip at home, but I did it a few times at one of my old workplaces, and it wasn't too bad. That was with a proper rework station, though.
      I still have two RROD Xbox 360 consoles collecting dust, so I might buy a cheap pre-heater and BGA reballing kit to try. Worth a shot. lol

      sai kumar
      There are all sorts of types of flux, and I'm not sure what are considered the "best" ones for this type of BGA reflow tbh.
      The Kingbo fluxes are supposed to be good, or Kester 951, or Amtech.
      There are also specific types of flux designed for lead-free or leaded solder too, so probably best to have a look online for the recommended type, depending on what you need it for.

    Holy Crap!!!
    Now I'm wondering if a similar fix would save my old Nexus 7 from bootloop hell.

    • @iamdarkyoshi
      @iamdarkyoshi 6 років тому +1

      Scott Miller I never thought the n7 had thermal issues... I've owned three of them, and thermals were never an issue

    • @Tinker001
      @Tinker001 6 років тому +1

      I never noticed any thermal issues...
      But it started bootlooping twice. Never recovered the second time.
      Can't hurt to take it apart & see if maybe it's a similar issue.

      I think it was bad flash memory that killed ours. Always wondered if it would be possible to solder in a new chip - presumably you'd also need to get the boot image on there first.

    Too bad, It's a beautifull phone,very slick and eye candy. Also very practical. For me this is the perfect size for smartphone ,its easy to fall in love with it....but after the romantic time this BITCH will go full bootlooping .It's amazing how many people have problems with lg phones. LG invented bootloop...
