Well, Dead Poets Society is an absolute stinker. Ham-fisted, boorishly obvious and schmalzy; one of the most inexplicably and severely overrated films I've ever seen. But Hawke is an incredible actor and filmmaker (The Good Lord Bird is just totally fantastic) and I agree that barring DPS (which he was least responsible for!), his batting average is just out of this world. Very, very talented and superlative taste in projects.

This is a serious question: Why do you say "he is one of the most underrated actors in Hollywood"? He has 4 Oscar noms in addition to other acting and writing noms and some hollywood Awards Wins, he's made some terrific movies w/ A+ directors some of whom have sought him out for the role. How is that "underrated"? Maybe Out There in Audience-movieland - ? Anyway, just really curious about that characterization. I think he's one of the best actors of his generation; have seen a lot of his movies and when I see he's cast, I take a serious look because, well, I rate him very-highly! W/ respect.

Thing is in some ways they're kind of starting to remind me of like Inside The Actors Studio, but when it got to seasons like 7, 8 and 9, and so on. For as often as the series is being done, you're kind of running out of actors that truly warrant such a deep dive. I've seen some thumbnails for ones with actors I like perfectly fine, but "their iconic roles"? Iconic? Some of these people they've featured have accumulated MAYBE 2-3 really indelible characters so far, at best. Or, I guess they can do more, just don't pretend it's a slew of incredible roles.

The Matrix was game-changing, I love solid space adventures with a human story, but this film is everything that successful sci-fi strives to be: bigger than its budget, ambitious and expansive in its narrative, but about small stories and simple human compulsions at its core. It's always just been slightly ahead of where we are viewing it, so it works as a relatable cautionary tale and inspirational one too. Cracking score as well 😃

They really capture the maturity level, complications, ideals, etc. of the character's ages, and while to me they're snapshots of their exact years and times of my life, there's still an incredibly timeless aspect to them.

Good lord, I had no idea how humble and knowledgeable Ethan Hawke is. I could listen to him talk on film for hours. What a cool dude, constantly giving credit to the usually unseen people (directors, stuntmen and writers). Seems like a stand-up guy

I know him for the Before Trilogy, Gattaca, Dead Poet's Society, etc., but I'll be damned if Training Day isn't an American classic. He's one half of the incredible duo that made it such a beloved film. Ethan Hawke and Denzel Washington have an incredible chemistry together. It's undeniable in the few films they've been in together.

I like the ones where the actor has at least 20+ years of experience like this one and Hugh Grant’s. There have been some where actors have only been in a handful of movies or are a bit young and have not much to contribute about their experiences.

Ethan thank you for being such a gifted actor. I appreciate more his 90's roles but he made me love movies.
Being always a complicated and suffering characters (Finn in Great Expectations, Vincent in Gattaca, Ishmael in Snow falling on cedars) his lines are imprinted in my mind for his exceptional performances. Sir, you are admirable.

I really hope Linklater, Hawke and Delpy continue to make 'Before' films every nine years until they are in their 80's. It will be the greatest things Cinema has ever produced, documenting the entire life and romance of two fantastic characters.

Actually it would still be a step behind the Up series, which started with a group of 7-year-olds and has filmed them every seven years up until the present. The most recent installment was 56 Up, released in 2013. You should check it out sometime. The first few aren't great, but if you watch them all in order, then by the time you get to 28 Up you will be hooked and you will think these people are part of your family or something. It's mesmerizing.

Ethan, if your reading this, thank you! Introduced my sone to Dead Poet Society and it once again revitalized its sheer “organic” tone. Goes to show you how in an era of marvel and cgi everywhere you look, movies like DPS still can inspire even today’s audience! So bravo to you and Peter and whole team. Enjoyed catching up on your journey! Wishing you much continued success!
