    I know the other comments disagree but I think doll voice makes more sense than baby talk. Doll voice connotes something specific to this Taiwanese phenomenon. Calling this baby talk would give people the wrong impression because there are different connotations. Baby talk isn't just "cute", it infantilizes the other person. It wouldn't be used by shopkeepers like dolly voice is.

    This is wonderful. Thank you!
    I know Chinese is tough for newbies. Thing is, this is a good example for you to learn from -- they are speaking slowly and clearly, but not so slowly as to be boring. Plus it has a great set of English subtitles. If it's still too fast youtube let's you adjust speed of playback.

    • @barrelrolldog

      I agree with you, the women of taiwan should adopt a deep voice instead and then they will become a higher status than men!

    • @MandarinWithMissLin
      @MandarinWithMissLin  3 роки тому +7

      basically from the way I see it, it’s hard to find an equivalence in English. It’s an unique cultural phenomenon in Taiwan. However, we use “娃娃音” not just to talk to baby or to talk to men because we consider we have a lower status. Actually on the contrary, I saw a TV show the other day talking about the fact that nowadays- many men find out that women use 娃娃音 to “get what they want” or “ to avoid annoying tasks or physical work at workplace”. So on the contrary, some Taiwanese men feel unfair. Anyways, I am glad to see students discuss this.😊

    • @barrelrolldog
      @barrelrolldog 3 роки тому +3

      @@MandarinWithMissLin I thought of it more like talking *like* a baby rather than talking *to* a baby.

    • @johnmorgan233
      @johnmorgan233 3 роки тому +2

      @@MandarinWithMissLin By baby talk, it is imitating the voice of baby, not to talk to a baby. I think your argument proves the point about status. It is those with a lower status using language to get what they want. If it is a male salesperson, do they use the voice? If it is a husband asking wife for help, does he use this voice?
      I understand the language can be used between women, but in this case it is a salesperson (lower status than customer) trying to sell something. I am not commenting if it is wrong, simply making the sociological categorization regarding the linguistic usage of wa wa yin. If Taiwan men are just figuring this out now, I question their observation skills.

      @@yukimikako of course it is not an American phenomenon. I am quite familiar with it from my time in Taiwan. Every time I walk into a shop, the sales lady speaks exactly like Miss Lin's sister. If I poll 100 people (not from Taiwan) and ask them to describe it, I am fairly confident 90%+ would say it is baby talk, maybe 10% would say doll talk, but we don't say baby voice or doll voice.
