I used this method, and it changed the appearance of the paper, but I couldn't change its texture. It still feels new, and I need a way to make it feel old. I have paper that looks exactly like currency. Can you help me? I've tried many methods over the past four months without success. I buried it in the soil for two months, and when I took it out, its texture hadn't changed. @@MikeDeakinArt
I went through a paper making stage. My wonderful husband made screens and I used his moms blender for making the pulp. And then I started making tea dyed newsprint. Hung those on the clothesline to also get sun dried and crinkled. To use an English term, my neighbors thought I was bit “daft”. I feel a paper kinda day coming on. Thank you for renewing my interests. As always, love your style and that you share it with the world. Byrdie Airmann (my Steampunk alter ego)
Well Mr Mike! Thanks for the great tut as usual! I spent the best Sunday afternoon making some coffee/tea (no ink) dyed papers. It was sooo satisfying to see the results so quickly, unlike my old method of waiting for hours/days for them to dry. Did a bunch of music sheets, graph papers, ledger papers etc. For anyone else interested, I used my all in one Ninja air fryer on bake setting (model that flips up after use) at 375F. Took max 2 mins per page. I put them on a baking sheet paper, not silicone (from target, Walmart etc) and the bonus is you end up with a crunchy, vintage, translucent baking paper on which you can even stamp with stazon!
Going to give this a try, I like that it is a quick way to get dyed papers. The only thing better that aged paper is the lovely sound it makes when they are ruffled together. Thanks for a great video!
I agree Laura! I've tried various methods & wound up with a batch of over crinkled paper (the dye application method with the sponge stick must help keep it flat) & sticky brown mess everywhere - best tutorial for ageing paper - thanks so much Mike!
Great, thank you for sharing your method :D I live in Las Vegas, NV USA where there is zero humidity and papers dry here in short order! Have a nice night!
I put up a photo of my beautiful stack of dyed papers using your method on the " Friendly Junk Journal People" group page on Facebook. I of course mentioned I used your method and was quickly inundated with questions! Don't be surprised if that vid gets a lot of new views in the next couple of days. 😃 Thanks Mike...love your vlog by the way. Give Mr. Bentley a hug for me!
TFS... I love using TM dyes from the Ink refills... I also use my dehydrator to dry several layers of papers safely at a time... plus I can do all that in the garage, so I dont have to be careful to not get the ink/dye on my kitchen floor...
Ha Debbie. Clothes I have worn in the last 24 hours - shorts and tank top, long pants and t shirt, running capris and t shirt, long pants and sweatshirt and capris with a 3/4 sleeve shirt. I will likely need all for this weekend too!
I like your method. So much easier and less messy than the other ones I have seen on UA-cam. I hope Ian sold a lot of his fantastic creations at the show he attended. Love all of your videos.
I have used this method as well as other methods. I have also used the actual tea bag to add the tea to the papers... pressing in dabs .... works too!... (I like to also use a slightly damp dishcloth which I place over the papers as they come out of the oven... keep them in a pile... just adding the new one on top...place the dishcloth and cover with a heavier towel... It has the effect of straightening out the papers asap!!!!)
Susan Salyer-I love the way you referred to the wind as "her." I never really thought about it but her temperament seems a little more feminine. Please don't be throwing shade at me. I may not have been very PC, but it was all in jest. Obviously not all females are like that, at least not over the age of four.☺️ Blessings❣
I sometimes layer my papers when they are wet at different angles and get some interesting patterns and shades as they dry in oven. Thanks for sharing.
Try a pizza pan you well love the dots it lives on the paper to I also use ink and if you have a dish with a pattern you can get the other impression if you lay it over top of it to dry you will love the look any kind of plate that has an depression on it will come out great also the dots from the pizza pan hope that helps you much love Denina ♥️
Great idea, I make sometimes a big pile of coffee dyed papers, but only when the sun shines so it dries Quickly. But this and the oven it is so great when it is winter and we don’t have the warm sun.
Thanks for taking the time to show us your dying process. Enjoy all of your videos, especially your weekly vlogs sharing with us Mr. Bentley, Ian & your parents. Thanks again. Lillie
finally something easy to do...the papers look great and probably smell delicious. Had a big move from one state to another - been busy trying to find all my "stuff"- no matter how organized before the move, no one can ever really get back to creating for a while...l enjoy your videos all the time...thanks Mike. Margy
Hi, I'm new to staining papers and wondered if the paper is more fragile after being in the oven ? How long do you leave it in the oven for ? Can't wait to start using this technique xx
Hi its me again!! LoL....I use a grill sheet...also ..its one you put on the outdoor grill to keep things from falling thru...it has cross hatches..very unique...I use warm coffee and soak the papers for. a min or 2...I just got a rack to put cookies or whatever you want to cool on...thought would give that a go...the pattern should be interesting!!! WLYK... Also use pages from an XL drawing / multi media pad...it also comes out of pad clean..has perforations...Also have used the spray bottle method..didn't like it as much...Have you tried KoolAid for a different color?... Just a few thoughts...Just saw this video..sorry it took so long!!
1st time tea dyer here. Adding ink to the mixture is genius. I haven’t seen anyone else suggest that. Your process is much easier than what I had in mind. I think I’ll go with yours.
I use instant but i dip mine in a large tray instead of painting it on. the more coffee you add the darker it will be but i find using boiled water and leave for 2-3 mins before use does the trick. its the heat that allows the coffee to permeate the paper fibres. :) you can also soak the paper using the method iv said above. i dry mine in oven or under the grill :)
Thank you Mike I to use the ink I put drops of it in my instant coffee alcohol to store Mike your paper are nice I love how we allowed each other to do what works for us and can share thanks again for all you do 👍🏼
Thank you so much for sharing your techniques! Can't wait to try this. I have been spreading my papers all over my tables to dry for a couple of days.... it's. It really convenient ! These look beautiful
Is that 150 Celsius? If so, ~300 F, for us Yanks. Thanks, I've been putting this off for 2 weeks, due to the messy process/time of others...This is a brilliant solution! Thanks so much!! Karen
What an easy method! Thank you.
I love the crinkly sound the dried paper makes
The crackling of the paper sounds great and a simple methode
I'm so glad I found a guy doing this. I was starting to think maybe something is wrong with me being interested in this stuff. Lol!
We're a rare old breed us crafty blokes!!!

Omg this is a godsend, no more taking all day to tea dye paper that is never dark enough. Thank you so much for this! I'm so doing this!!!!!!!!!
I hadn’t thought of using distress ink added to the coffee mixture. Great idea! Thanks for sharing it! ❤️
Going to give this a try, I like that it is a quick way to get dyed papers. The only thing better that aged paper is the lovely sound it makes when they are ruffled together. Thanks for a great video!

I like to dry mine in the sun. I think once it warms up again, I'll try this on my glass top patio table. Crazy Atlanta weather!

I like the idea of using the sponge brush....I usually spray and there is always over spray to deal with......thank you!

So glad summer is here if only the wind would control herself ...I have never thought of adding "tea dye " distress ink.mega hugs for this video.

Hi Mike, new admirer here from The Netherlands, love all your video's very much, hugs from me and my doughter
What a great idea to add distress ink! I can never get the darkness I desire, this may do it! Thank you so much for sharing!
Kimarie Andrews try using hot coffee - dries darker :)
Kerri Rodd I use warm water, will try hot....I also used instant coffee instead of brewed....would that make a difference?

From what I remember paper will ignite at 450 degrees so I would think that 300 for those of us in the states. I have worked at 275 degrees before.
what is that on gas mark please and love the video thanks xxxx
Great video! thank you for for sharing. How much distress reinker per how much water did you use?
