    Great tips Dani! In my experience, I treated my phals recovering from crown rot the same way by disinfecting with hydrogen peroxide and cinnamon powder. I didn't repot the whole orchid but just treated in place to disturb less of the plant. I actually would check the wound in the crown and repeat the steps of applying the hydrogen peroxide and cinnamon for a week to make sure no more fungus was growing in the wound. For me, even after the wound was clear, clean and dry, I was still afraid moisture could accumulate in the wound and start a new infection. My solution was to plug up the opening with candle wax. I carefully lit a candle, held it high above the plant crown and aimed it at the wound so that as the melted wax dripped it would be cool enough to fill in the cavity but not hot enough to burn the healthy plant tissue. So far, the phals are happy, recovering and sprouting keikis. One phal is sprotuing from the side of the stem. The other phals has 2 keikis coming off of the flower spike.

      Hi, glad to hear the orchid made it! :D yes candle wax is a great idea, I use it on stems to prevent rotting in the medium (soil depending on the plant), with crown rot I had the surprise to see some sock orchids pushing out new leaves, so the crown was not damaged enough, wax would not allow this so I am keeping it only with cinnamon. But if you know the crown is completely ruined and you have moisture issues, yes wax is a great idea :D

    Thank you so much Dani for this video. I'm new to orchids so when I noticed my phal losing all its leaves although it sent a flower spike I found your video on crown rot.unfortunately 3 other phals were affected so I separated them.I followed your instructions using the peroxide and cinnamon. Thankfully they still had some healthy roots.now they are coming along nicely.I never thought one tiny green shoot the size of a pinhead could make me so excited I am so encouraged by that.Thanks again Dani. PS thank you to your viewers who post their comments and share their experiences I find them very helpful.

    I received a beautiful orchid as a gift, it bloomed for months , then I noticed crown and root rot. It was not taken care of properly before received it, probably watered from above and allowed to sit in water. I will follow your instructions and try to save it. thankyou for your wonderful videos, I have learned so much from them. Thank you!

    I use cinnamon for root rot treatment on all my plants. If I want to treat rot in water propagations I add cinnamon for a few days to the water. Numerous studies have shown it’s a wonderful anti fungal and I’ve seen it work well, even better than hydrogen peroxide I think

    I've followed your guide trying to treat severe crown rot. However, the poor phal. orchid basically only had one healthy root left and 1½ leaves. The peroxide even just poured through the crown. This orchid was rescued from the bin of a very posh flower shopin copenhagen. It had a big scar from rot on one of the leaves, but it had dried out completely. It's been loooking like it was thriving for a long time, but then it stopped growing and recently I discoved it was crown rot :( I hope it will recover. Last time I followed your advice it saved the orchid

    I rescued an orchid from Lowe’s for $3 on clearance. I waited a couple weeks, snipped the spikes, and it appeared to be in great shape. I have a brand new spike sprouting, but realized it wasn’t growing as fast as my other orchid. Somehow rot began attacking right above that baby spike on the crown 😞. The hydrogen peroxide, and cinnamon seems to be saving it so far. I did lose a leaf, but I’m hoping it will recover. I didn’t know to dry the peroxide until this video, so thank you. I hate that they use the most terrible potting mediums. It has to be intentional. Big box stores don’t seem to pay any attention to specific plant requirements. It’s so wasteful.

    I've made an attempt at saving a Phalaenopsis with some crown rot by following the advice here. When I approached the root system, I found the opposite of what was demonstrated here: there were a few roots that showed rot at the stem and, yet, were still green and firm further down the root. I'm wondering if you sacrifice those roots (cut them off at the stem to get rid of the rot) in spite of their healthy appearance further away from the stem and crown. Another fine video. Glad they exist - such wealth of information.

      Hi, thanks for watching glad you enjoy my videos :D about the training I will be sure to make a video when the Phals start to spike ;) about leaves, not sure you can train them, they will always start to grow downwards facing the light, training them will result in twisted leaves. I purchased mini Dendrobium purple enobi few months ago. First it produced three new canes. At half way to maturing all of them died. They start getting affected from base. And get limp. They smell like fungus. Happens quickly. One day nothing second day gone.
    After all of them died. I did apply oxygen peroxide. And removed all infected part after applied cinnamon. Then quickly 2 new shoots appeared. Same outcome. Again 3 new shoots appear. Same thing.
    Now two more shoots are emerging while a flower spike is also coming out.
    It had three matured canes when it came and they are still okay along with 3 shunted canes. Only new ones are getting affected. Any ideas what's going on?

    Hi , I have a beautiful little orchid that just put out a single bloom stem with over 20 blooms and when I took it out to water it and look at its roots, they were all covered in black spots and turning black 😢 so I followed this video and took all the mossy medium off it and had to cut a ton of the roots off. I sprayed the part where the roots come out with hydrogen peroxide as it was also black. I got some fresh medium and soaked it. Do I have to cut my new bloom stem? The leaves are all doing good except one. Should I still water it again once a week or wait till the roots are silvery? It was a valentine gift from my husband I don’t want it to die. It’s special and was just going to put out all these flowers. Two have already opened. I’m so distraught. Thank you!!

About 4 days after bringing it home, all of the leaves just fell off. If the root system is still in good condition, can it be saved? what about apple cider vinegar diluted with water... I am curious it has anti fungal properties ? As far as cinnamon powder goese the properties are not still viable or present unless it is fresh from a cinnamon stick. the powder has sat for too long on the shelves it must be fresh!

    • @MissOrchidGirl
      @MissOrchidGirl  8 років тому +1

      Hi, well the reason cinnamon works (or for me it does) is that I use it as a desiccant, not as a fungicide :) I am not sure about vinegar and I am not ok using it, it is such an acidic solution that if it touches roots or sensitive places it can burn them. It is also a liquid and that makes it harder to control, so you cannot know where it goes.

  • @WWZenaDo
    @WWZenaDo 8 років тому

    I've just adopted a phalaenopsis that has this exact issue. It is too small to have enough stem to allow more leaves to come up from below. It appears to be sitting in a static state because the last leaf it has is still connected to the stem, still living - but the area above it is dead & stiff, so apparently no living sprouts can come up through that area. I despair the future of this poor orchid.
    I've cleaned off the dead roots, cleaned & repotted it, poured hydrogen peroxide over the crown to hopefully kill off the mold (& dried it thoroughly), but it's just barely hanging on.

    Hello Dani. I have an orchid that I believe to have root rot. I panicked and cut the two flower spikes completely off of it. And then it dawned on me to search for your videos for a care guide for it. I still proceeded to do the suggestions in this video. Although I don’t have a dryer or anything to dry the crown of the plant out with I just tried it out with a paper towel. And then I put the cinnamon. Will that still work? Will the plants still potentially grow a cake you somewhere else? Since I clipped the flower spikes? Also should I water it with fertilized water now that it may need more nutrients? It had a ton of roots so compacted in the original pot, but thankfully there were very little to cut away.

    I'm hoping for some advice about my phalaenopsis orchid. I'm new to these plants. I suspect my orchid has crown rot. The last leaf fell off last night. I have treated it twice now with the peroxide and cinnamon, after watching the videos. It looks like a tiny root nub is growing right under the last leaf that just fell off. Does this mean my plant is getting better and will survive? How will I know if it will be ok? How long does recovery usually take? It looks pretty bad. No leaves, no flower spikes. But the roots look decent. When I apply peroxide, will it stop fizzying white when it's all better? Thank you for any help you can offer 🙏

    I try few times to save some orchid but because i thought they all are like other plants I treat them very carefully , but not in the way they need. Few months ago I get an orchid and I just leave her alone on my window so seeing that " stick " with no flower on I thought another one gone. But when I have a look proper , she was blooming !! Yayyyy, so this was the secret , to not wet it very often (which I did before) and leave her to have some rest. Now another one is blooming after same "treatment". I also have 3 others which dont look too happy so I decide to repot them - when i take them out the roots was rotten. I cut them out and was left just 1-2 roots which was healthy. By the other hand I cut the leaves as I thought they look bad and them can reinfested with whatever was that infestation. I notice you dont cut leaves even if they look very bad. Do you think my orchid still have a chance if they have only 1-2 leaves? Thank you for all very informative videos!

      Hi, glad you enjoyed my video :D if you refer to water culture I sadly cannot help you, I don't believe this is beneficial for epiphyte orchids in the long term. If you refer to bare root in a container, like a vase, well some orchids work like that, Vandas have been known to work, epiphyte orchids bare root can do well if you can keep up with the watering schedule. Hello Dani ! I'm from Brazil and always watch your videos. I saw that many are having problems with fungus Phaus. Another very effective substance to combat and gives quick results , it is skimmed milk mixed in equal parts with filtered water . It was the best way I've used to date and that everyone has at home! My started to show the same symptom that your and I quickly applied the diluted milk , days later, was drying the place attacked . I wanted to share with you , because I was very sad to see their plants, which are so beautiful , they are destroyed by this horrible plague !! Spray 2 times a week, throughout the orchid. Soon the attack will stop. The milk to change the pH that favors the growth of fungus , making alkaline medium , it can not grow, that simple! Also very effective against mites. Many kisses for you my darling ! Bjssssssssss = kissessss

    • @MissOrchidGirl
      @MissOrchidGirl  8 років тому +1

      Hi, thanks for the this treatment, I'll test it if I have any more issues with this orchid as I never tried it :) it will be interesting to make a video on it as well. However as far as I know, milk is a slightly acidic liquid, so maybe it works by making the environment acidic rather than alkaline?

    • @LucianaRReorquideasnajanela
      @LucianaRReorquideasnajanela 8 років тому

      Forgive me Dani , really gets acid yes . I wanted to refer to milk of magnesia , do not know if you use but is for stomachache . To remove the acidity and poor digestion, bought in a pharmacy . Skim milk , decides , I treated my well and truly dried and fungi disappeared . In my case , I do not use substrate in orchids . are only planted in wooden cachepots then had no problem acidify the culture medium . I had a 3 with fungus problems and soon stabilized.
      I like natural products , only use toxic when there is no more fighting way. Skim milk , as I said before , it's great to combat the mites , the fungus also works, but only to spray the leaves , so confuse me all! Not cool , put acid in the culture medium , it spoil faster and affect the roots .Thank you for warning me of the error. A big kiss for you and lots of flowers for us !! Bjsssssss

I bought a dendrobium almost 2 yrs back which has not bloomed till now. Although it had flowers when I bought it. This year the leaves of the mother plant fell off and I ve got two keikis. They were growing well until few days ago I found one of the keikis has crown rot since it's leaves are rotting from the top. As suggested by yourself in a video, I ve applied cinnamon powder on the crown. Hope it survives. I wish to know if two keikis on the same mother plant are well off or should I remove one of them. I fear both may compete for food and one of them may ve to give up.

    I got one for my birthday about a month ago and it seems to have this, its lost 2 leaves but still has one large one and a smaller sprouting one from the top of the crown ( the large one has some outer based tissue damage so i have a bad feeling it will lose that one too). My concern is that the base of the core it definelty tinted yellow but the leaf that just fell off was very firm and healthy, as well as the stem of its leaf with no hollowness or issues. crossing my fingers i can save her, but the blooming to death thing may have been her fate, she pushed so hard as to even bloom the last bud that was half the size if not less of her original blooms (was bought with 18 buds, 8 of which were already fully bloomed and shes not really that big), really hoping i can do something to keep her alive i hate having my plants die on me so soon, thank you so much for your channel and videos i feel like i was better prepared to take on owning my first orchid

    What if a root is dark brown from the crown to half way down the root? It is still plump, not dry, but it seems to contain fungus from crown rot. Do I keep those roots or cut them?

    Hello MissOrchidGirl, my name is Cat and i need severe help with my orchid. I was watching this video and did exactly what you did. I also tried to dry the crown? The crown part is what worries me, there is nothing but a sick tiny stem? I'm not so sure if it will live and regrow its leaves, I don't trust anything else on the web because usually what you do I do to my orchids and it works. I have many more orchids and they are happy thanks to you! Its just this one i didn't notice was rotting until it was time for me to wipe the dirt off the leaves that the leaves fell off right away. I'm really worried.

    I'm looking for the best medium to keep my orchids alive. I've been through 5 of them and only 2 are left standing. Granted, I should probably buy them from somewhere else other than Home Depot or Trader Joe's but those are where they are cheapest in Michigan. You say you use seramis clay for your medium, do you add anything additional to that? And where are the best places to buy your orchids?

    • @MissOrchidGirl
      @MissOrchidGirl  8 років тому +2

      Hi, well it all boils down to choosing the right medium for your environment :) bark works for some people, but not for others. Sphagnum moss as well. The temperatures and humidity in your environment will dictate what you should use and ofcourse the type of orchid you have. I do use seramis as it is very water retentive, great in my subtropical climate, but awful in cool and humid environments. I don;t use anything else, just seramis and hydroton clay :) I purchase orchids from various locations, online nurseries, shops even ebay, orchid nurseries have the best variety though ;)

      Thank you for such a quick response! I am always watching your videos for advice. As far as climate, I live in Michigan- so it's constantly changing! My orchids stay inside and during the summer usually the air condition is on at around 74 degrees F. I've tried a combination of specific phalaenopsis mediums, usually prepackaged and then sometimes adding a slight bit of sphagnum moss. Again, I only have two that are surviving and the one with the root rot probably wont make it. I had to watch your video on using the arial roots to create new ones. I appreciate all your help and all your videos!!

      well premade mixes can be good or somehwhat inappropriate for epiphyte orchids. I believe the mixes that contain peat moss are not suited as they stay moist too long and the granulation can suffocate roots. I prefer mixes that have only bark chips, so maybe this is something to look for oin purchasing an orchid mix :)

    okay thank you for answering I just wasn't sure because I know I have it laying around the house and didn't want to go to the store but I'll definitely go get some now. And I just discovered that one of my orchid has stem rot. according to you I know you said it is really hard to cure period but does that mean the cinnamon will stop growth in the area applied and that is why it's not an option for curing stem rot.

    • @MissOrchidGirl
      @MissOrchidGirl  8 років тому +1

      Hi, the cinnamon will just desiccate any exposed tissue. Dry tissue cannot be infected, that is why we use cinnamon, to dry infections so that they are killed along with the tissue. The foliage (and axis) is protected by a cuticle, as long as that is intact, cinnamon and infections cannot penetrate it. But an infection means that the cuticle is broken somewhere, adding cinnamon to it will dry that portion.. problem is.. where is it? :( might be at the bottom, might be at the leaf joint, it's really hard to tell so that's why I cannot find a good cure. I now try to use hp 3% everywhere and just add cinnamon powder where I think the infection is, but.. I fail at it more cases than not. A good solution is to cut that portion of the stem completely, into good tissue, but if the orchid is too small it is useless, you might cut a portion that is incomplete. Sorry I cannot help more, I am having issues with this disease as well, also it shows signs when it's too late many of the times :(

      +MissOrchidGirl okay I think I was a little bit confused but now I understand thank you for answering. I think that one unfortunately might not make it. But I do have another phalaenopsis and I'm confused because the leaves are beginning to turn yellow on the top and some of my flowers are dying. I know that you mentioned if the top leaves turn yellow that it is most likely Crown rot but it has been in a hot window seal I don't know how water could have even lasted. And I do not see any rotting I'm confused as to what to do. I'm also curious if it could be sunburned at all?

    • @MissOrchidGirl
      @MissOrchidGirl  8 років тому +1

      Hi, well it best to never water where you put cinnamon :) in this case the crown. I would not put cinnamon on roots though and they are the only organs that require watering.

    How long do you have to wait for a Keiki to develop enough to be separated from the parent plant? Can you show us how to do this?

    • @MissOrchidGirl
      @MissOrchidGirl  7 років тому +1

      Hi, it depends, it can take a year or two, the important thing is for the keiki to have at least 2 leaves and a few good roots that are about 15 cm long or more.

    I just took home two Orchids today from work with crown rot and had to throw one out. The last one has no leaves and I'm worried it won't survive the roots so far look very good so I have a bit a hope but will having no leaves make it a no no for living?

    • @MissOrchidGirl

    • @MissOrchidGirl
      @MissOrchidGirl  7 років тому +1

      Hi, no keikis can occur naturally when the orchid needs them or feels like producing them :) keiki paste can sometimes fail and give secondary branches or even deformed growths.

    What do you do with an orchid with splitting leaves

    • @MissOrchidGirl
      @MissOrchidGirl  7 років тому +2

      Hi, well first let's determine why the leaves split. Usually it is a sign of dehydration at some point, leaves might grow slightly mangles and when they hydrate they can split due to the liquid volume in the leaf. If it's an older leaf it's ok, it happens, are the new leaves splitting though?

    • @DarlaLama
      @DarlaLama 7 років тому

      My husband wanted to surprise me with an orchid from grocery store. He meant well but he only chose this orchid because of it being in beautiful blooms! It was packed in moss with two split leaves and twisted. I've repotted it and cut one leaf off like you say with cinnamon on the edge, 4 days ago and it's looking ok! Even the new growth baby leaf has a fold in it and white dots like it will be a cut in the centre of it too as it grows

    • @MissOrchidGirl
      @MissOrchidGirl  7 років тому +1

      It might be that it was not watered in time so leaves grew mangled, it happens but it will correct itself in time with proper care :)

      Thanks, it came from a funeral and was potted DEEP in some pretty dense material with 2 other exotic looking plants and all that was covered in moss. the roots look ok and I cut off the stem at the first node and put some hydrogen peroxide on there but it didn't fiz, so I potted it in some really loose bark and moss. Hoping that some oxygen will help it, but who knows. What are the signs that it's coming back vs signs that its not gonna make it so I know what to look for?
