I was an LAC/USC nurse for several years in the 80s. We still wore all white back then, even when I was a jail ward nurse for 6months. Oh the stories I could tell! Having General Hospital on my resume brought respect and prestige, but mostly a sense of why I was a nurse, to bring mercy and care without prejudice and a sense of pride in myself and my profession. I know old county is closed, but the memories of its rooms and long halls as well as the staff and patients with be with me forever.
I was there as a patient in 1992 from a motorcycle accident. They took good care of me. I'll never forget the old wooden wheelchairs that were still in use then.
I am SOOOOOOOOO happy they are NOT tearing it down. When they said it is a registered protected landmark and would not be torn down I wept. I love that building. I remember being in love with it from the moment I saw it on General Hospital when my great grandma was watching "Her Stories!" (Soap Opera's)
Oh gosh did I miss an eternal handshake? Sometimes I am not sure what is going on but it is hysterical when he is so excited and talking and then gives a 30 second handshake.
I graduated from the County USC Medical Center School of Nursing in 1972. Best training ever! Was a 3 year live in program then and sad the dorm was torn down and it is now a 2 yr program. We need more schools like this! By our senior year we were literally running the various floors! When interviewing for a job years later all I had to do was tell them where I went to school and I was hired on the spot!
I was born in this hospital and it has always fascinated me. So heartbroken they abandoned it. They should have left it alone and continue to use it. I remember passing by those halls and being mesmerized by the art work.
Sorry i know you posted this a while ago, but it may make you feel better to know that we didn't abandon it!!! =) I feel just as sentimental about that place. We can't use it as our main hospital anymore because the building is old and doesn't meet important 21st century updates for inpatient hospital care. But we still use it as a community wellness center, do research there, and preserve it a as a historic site! The new hospital ("new county") is literally 10 feet away and we all pay homage to "old county" as we walk by. *source: current med student at new county, and my dad trained at old county.
I too was born there. Nov 1954. I was also a patient there in 1976. It is a wonder of architecture. When looking at the best possible outcome for any patient's recovery, the new hospital has what it takes. It is purpose built to use the latest methods. i was there in March 2021 for open heart surgery, and it was a totally comforting experience. I still feel great!
I have dealt with mental health issues over my life. I have had horrific care and treatment from so many places. But I ended up there one night, and have to say they did in incredible job of getting me processed and placed.
This is just beautiful History! I knew that hospital since I was a kid! It saved my mother's life many times and oh boy! It was something to be in there! They used to call it GOD'S HOTEL. It was huge but I remember always looking at all that beautiful architecture. Thank you so much for uploading this video! It's like I have recovered a part of my life that was only a memory.

In a way you are both right. Marilyn Monroe was born at Los Angeles County General Hospital but they one built prior & just around the corner. The address on her birth certificate-1100 Mission Road & it became the the coroners office after they opened the 1934 Los Angeles County General Hospital on 1200 N state street. I used to go to this hospital all the time as a kid. My mom was really sick and the doctors were so good to her. I have so many memories of this beautiful hospital. I've always been fascinated by it. Thank you for this video.
I loved watching Huell back in the day because he had the same curiosity and questions as me. This was such a fascinating episode because I am fascinated by this Art Deco historic building ♥️ Thank you for posting and sharing! I hope they make part of this hospital a museum for the public to visit. my dad was sick there in the 80's they had a childcare center in the front that the kids would stay while other family members would go see people in the ICU . I have many memories of the child care facility there . My dad past away in 1989 . I remember not being able to go on the floor he was on since there were so many people in the ward . that my dad had to wheel out his I.V to see us in the hall way .looking out the windows . if i remember right he was on the 15th floor . the marble being everywhere. i remember the emergency room have multicolored chairs .
I did my 5 year residency there 2006-2011; half at the old hospital and half at the new when it opened. Man it was crazy!!! I'll always cherish those experiences and so glad I don't ever have to do that again. Everything from homeless people with psychosis NOS threatening to kill me to celebrity MVAs.
if I remember correctly, there is a UA-cam channel with a group of urban explorers, who where going through this old General Hospital building, and some of the places that I remember them showing were the operating theater, the kitchen , and maybe the morgue, and the Admin offices, but the building was pretty much empty, sad that it is abandoned, and just sits there unused now.
My mother was born there in 1956 … I’ve been a patient there.. so have many of my relatives and friends . Including my father. It’s a unique building indeed. Very creepy looking at night to be honest. Also it was a place that will save your life but it was also a place of cruel staff and very ghetto type workers who treated patients poorly. I remember punching a wall after getting into an argument with my dad. It break my hand and got a "boxer's fracture." Since I didn't have insurance, I had to visit the emergency room and this was the hospital that took me. There was so many people... I ended up waiting hours and ultimately overnight to actually see a doctor who also happened to be a student from USC medical. My facture didn't really heal up right but it was good enough. The legendary LA County USCMC is truly extraordinary institution. I believe LA USCMC methods (past present future) are benchmarks to the medical profession. The institution should be the blueprint of what all hospitals should strive to be all across the US. Hospital formula of operation on a daily basis has proven time & time again even against odds (especially the legendary case & practices of C BOOTH since day 1) the team work system continuously meets the call of duty & above. Why more hospitals in the US aren't looking into ways to bring at least a small portion of LA USCMC's method's in their institution is truly unbelievably & unacceptable really :(

Unfortunately due to the age of the building the Northridge earthquake in 1994 caused some damage beyond repair so they built a new facility beside it to replace it.
Horrible place. My oldest brother died of aids in 1989 in that hospital. He was already in intensive care . Going there every day for over a week until he died. We never had a chance to talk to him. To say goodbye. 33 years later I still can’t drive by that place, and now I live in Los Angeles. Sadly we didn’t feel that anyone cared.
I went there daily in 1973. It was almost like the old Camarillo hospital (that closed in 1997 and is now largely haunted though partly is a college today). THere was a mental place in that area. Their workers there were pedophiles.THe other name was Linda Vista.
I was born there in 1950 and was there every time that I had an asthma attack, back then you'd get 3 shots of adrenaline, 1 every 15 minutes. A grand old place.
I'm glad they are preserving that building. So interesting. Every time we drove by on the 5 we would be impressed with how big it was. Of course the Jail Ward was on floor 13. lol.
I work there :). Instead of tearing down, I am blessed to say that It has instead been repurposed for the community as The Wellness Center. Please check out www.thewellnesscenterla.org. I am blessed to make new history in such a historic site. :)
The 13th floor gave me the creeps and my mom used to work there. I remember having to step off of the elevator when prisoners were arriving. The small waiting area while bright, was still creepy because the inmates stood right there waiting to go in.
If you were never a patient at county usc you are really really lucky. I've been a patient for more than 10 years and it's completely normal for the nurses to put me next to a prisoner waiting for treatment and I've seen an obese women being pushed in the ER in a Costco probably (while eating a bucket of KFC) on a regular weeknight the ER is completely packed with people with GSW and stabbings, dead babies, raped victims.
Keri Xianne they change it now the ER is empty now lol I wonder why tho I have been there two times and is always empty I even feel like they are afraid 😳
@@w3r0ification i was admitted to ER 3 times in May of this year it depends because it was pretty packed the 2nd and 3rd time I was there. The first time it wasn't packed but it was on a sunday past midnight and had to sit next to homeless stinky guy that was so high his eyes were black.
I do not rule out the possibility of haunting, but I can say that as an internal medicine resident at LAC-USC in the early 2000s, I spent many on-call nights in that hospital, walking through cavernous hallways with dim lights and footsteps echoing, covering 7700 (med-psych) ward, 7800 (general med) ward, 8700, 8800, etc., sleeping alone in a room where I took hospital sheets to make my bed, and thinking about how many people in the past had died on the very same bed and mattress I was sleeping on. In those 3 years, I never saw or felt a ghost, and I never heard any nurses or techs talk about ghosts. And that makes me think, why isn't every hospital and hospice in this country overflowing with ghosts, when most Americans die in those institutions?
After I was in a motorcycle wreck, not my fault, I was taken here and they set my broken leg wrong and 5 weeks later I was in Florida and the doctor there had to rebreak my leg to set it correctly, it's just a PRACTICE THAT'S NEVER MADE PERFECT.
I just drove pass the hospital on a trip to L.A and took a photo of the place because I know it from the soap General Hospital but damn I should have went in.
They will NOT give tours to the public. People have vandalized many of the closed floors. The only people who can get in there are those that work at LAC-USC. 5th floor and above is sealed. Plus many of the closed floor are not safe...asbestos, diseases, old medicine lying around etc.

To say goodbye. 33 years later I still can’t drive by that place, and now I live in Los Angeles. Sadly we didn’t feel that anyone cared.
What floor was he in?
I went there daily in 1973. It was almost like the old Camarillo hospital (that closed in 1997 and is now largely haunted though partly is a college today). THere was a mental place in that area. Their workers there were pedophiles.THe other name was Linda Vista.
Steve Carras also st Luke hospital from Pasadena is also abandoned
We're going to go inside the hospital. WOWW!!! ECHO!!! ECHO!!!! ECHO!!!! Gotta love the Hausman. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
The top floors of this place are abandoned now and it’s kinda sad now it was left in ruin
I was born there in 1950 and was there every time that I had an asthma attack, back then you'd get 3 shots of adrenaline, 1 every 15 minutes. A grand old place.
Yep, was a Med student in the late 80’s and that’s what we would give in the ER, in addition to albuterol via HHN every 15 minutes.
I wonder how many from Hazard Grande and Gerarghty Loma were locked up on the 13th floor
4th street flats
I'm glad they are preserving that building. So interesting. Every time we drove by on the 5 we would be impressed with how big it was. Of course the Jail Ward was on floor 13. lol.
Sadly it's neglected. Nothing but old files, old equipment, photos, asbestos lol.
I work there :). Instead of tearing down, I am blessed to say that It has instead been repurposed for the community as The Wellness Center. Please check out www.thewellnesscenterla.org. I am blessed to make new history in such a historic site. :)
I was born there ✌✌
Is this Linda Vista hospital in Boyle Hieights
The 13th floor gave me the creeps and my mom used to work there. I remember having to step off of the elevator when prisoners were arriving. The small waiting area while bright, was still creepy because the inmates stood right there waiting to go in.
General Hospital In East California
Got to know this hospital like the back & palm of my hand
The first time it wasn't packed but it was on a sunday past midnight and had to sit next to homeless stinky guy that was so high his eyes were black.
the old hospital is haunted. there have been numerous reports of unexplained noises and apparitions.
Yes it is. I explored the whole building last week and it is haunted!
@@Ojromero_88 what did you see in that old hospital? What type of experiences?
@@Ojromero_88 Maybe the "ghosts" are done with the Peppers Ghosts Effects?
It’s been 15 years ago today November 7, 2023 since the old hospital closed on November 7, 2008
After I was in a motorcycle wreck, not my fault, I was taken here and they set my broken leg wrong and 5 weeks later I was in Florida and the doctor there had to rebreak my leg to set it correctly, it's just a PRACTICE THAT'S NEVER MADE PERFECT.
This place is HAUNTED!!
I just drove pass the hospital on a trip to L.A and took a photo of the place because I know it from the soap General Hospital but damn I should have went in.
Operated from December 1933 until November 7, 2008
I was there back in 2008 with a flu sitting next to a guy that got shoot
God dam
In the 90s that was a daily thing. I was born across in the women and children’s hospital
# WELCOME TO GENERAL HOSPITAL
The Cafeteria food 🍽💟
Dr . Warball 😂😂😂😂😂
How can I get a tour
They will NOT give tours to the public. People have vandalized many of the closed floors. The only people who can get in there are those that work at LAC-USC. 5th floor and above is sealed. Plus many of the closed floor are not safe...asbestos, diseases, old medicine lying around etc.
I am here after watching the latest episode of Ghost Adventures "LA Hospital of Horror"
Wonder if the tunnels underneath are haunted as well?
It is. All of LAC+USC is haunted.

Fun fact there are miles and miles of tunnels underneath county usc
How do you know this?
The older Doctor sounds like James Gardner in the teaching surgery lab.
Who the hell is James Gardner? Not the Jim Rockford I knew.
@@charleel1800 The actor who played him
Tammy Goulet Schrader Lol. No kidding! But his name was James Garner, not GarDner.
This is where i was born in 1952 and in the 60's volunteered as a candy stripper. It was an amazing experience.
