I think the best way to honor his memory is for local news and TV stations to focus only on local issues, and foster and encourage small and local businesses to have primetime to promote their business. Huell gave his show a lot of personal touch, like if he was a tour guide on a small town, but it happened to be the state of California as a whole.
Wonderful video. I am a Californian living overseas. To see these programs let’s me remember my favorite state and enjoy some of the things that I remember visiting. Great work by Mr Howser and the team. I thoroughly enjoyed the program.
I immigrated to USA when I was 4 yrs old. I didn't speak English & our family never afforded cable TV. Huell Howser was how I learned English and "American" mannerisms. Re-watching these videos have made me realize I learned a lot of my social skills through Huell too!
Possibly the best episode of California’s Gold ever. You can definitely pick up on Huell’s humble vibe in this episode. Growing up in southern Cal i spent much of my youth visiting the observatory. The coolest place ever😎
This is the place where I first learned about Nikola Tesla and the invention that he considered his most important one, his coil. The man deserves more attention and respect for what he achieved, and didn't deserve to pass on in obscurity. The observatory itself is my most favorite place in town to go to, and I've had the good fortune to visit many times there by myself and with friends!
My Father came up to this observatory in about 1939 or 40, and then later on our family spent many wonderful weekend excursions up at Griffith Park and the observatory...my Father just loved this place, as he thought that Nature was just wonderful to learn about.
I have such love and fondness for the Griffith Observatory. It seemed almost magical when I was a child, and even today in my twilight years brings me back. The architecture is amazing, and the displays even more so. I hope it continues to inspire and educate well into the future, and I feel privileged to have been born in a time when such things are possible. On a sad note I think I'd be a little remiss if I didn't mention Huell. He was a transplant to California but became something of a California icon himself. His demise form prostate cancer was a blow to his many fans, and he is missed greatly.
My father met Huell for the first time at Farmer's Market about twenty years ago or so, and put in some words for him while being interviewed about his experiences there. And both my father and I had the good fortune of hearing him speak at the LA Convention Center back in 2010 while the travel convention was taking place. Excellent speaker and interviewer who could really put on the charm. Hard to believe he's been gone for the last ten years. 35:43
I first knew "Herr Doktor Krupp" while attending El Camino College in Torrance, CA... This is a wonderful video, Dr. Krupp is a marvelous explainer and public resource and Huell Howser has always been a wonderful interviewer... This is the best video article on the Griffith Observatory that I have ever viewed!
That was absolutely fantastic! I have been to the old Griffith park observatory and was fascinated by it. The new upgraded version is just beyond belief. Huell Howser was truly a great interviewer and knew all the right questions to ask. The doctor was a wealth of information and nailed all of Huell’s questions.
I love Huell Howser ‘ s way and our new view of the Milky Way ‼️ I’d totally dig watching a solar eclipse through the safe sun viewer. Thank you for this excellent review of our newly renovated Griffith Observitory👍👍👆
what a powerhouse of an interview. This man Huell needs a Pulitzer in commemoration. The way he is so intrigued and interested organically is phenomenal. Hats off to Huell !!!!! And just like this interview he's in the stars now! Love you bro !!
I met him a number of times at El Coyote (his and my favorite restaurant in LA). Being in his presence is truly magical, hard to describe. He tragically died at age 67 in 2013. He was truly a legend.
What a great place, took some astronomy classes there,Wednesday night's 1970s,got too hand grind some scope lens downstairs, not too mention all the stars we got too see,Thank you, Lois hall,Larry's mother,my best friend, from the old l.a. days,Lois was Liberian at will Rodgers elementary school, Lynwood, california, late 1960s, 1970s, thanks for the good times, mrs.hall, and God bless you and yours, love devarskinner!!!
I hiked from the merry go round parking lot to the observatory , I had made a playlist on UA-cam for the Hike but instead I ended up listening to this episode while I walked
This was a bit of time travel for me because I got to visit in '09 for the first JJ Abrams Star Trek premiere. I think I only spent something like two hours at the planetarium (probably half of that in a show) but it made a big impression on me as vivid as anything else. Like we saw guys from LOST at the after party - no big deal really compared to the Observatory. in particular it's great to see a bit of things I don't recall getting a chance to look at like the Camera Obscura. And the planetarium's seat covers still have plastic on them! I think this video just about does the place justice - it was incredibly clean and shining all about.
I really wish that Huell would have done a shoot at the downtown L.A. Tommy's hamburger joint at Rampart. Now, THERE'S a story! Some "B-roll" of the restrooms would add even more spice than their special chili recipe provides.
Excellent. Wish my back could still handle a plane flight. We here in S.F. have a digital projector now, and the contrast of the show is nothing like the old Zeiss projection. We don't get the blacks you get from the old projection system. Naturally, the projectors don't create the blacks, but the digital lighting adds a fog to the surface of the dome. That new Zeiss looks just awe inspiring....
What Happened to Turdlock who uploaded all the Huell Howser videos? I guess KCET hit him with an infringement complaint. At least they left the show on.
@mohamadfaiz6935 The observatory closed down in 2002. Huell mentioned that it was 5 years since he visited when it when that happened, so, this episode was taped in 2007 then broadcast in 2008, was that it?!
San Francisco's California Academy of Science used to have a planetarium just as cool as this. But Mayor Gavin Newsom gutted the planetarium and now (well, the last time I was there in 2015) it had replaced it with a propaganda film, just a video really, played on part of what was once the dome of the planetarium, all about climate change and how we humans are ruining the planet and how climate change is something we must do something about. It's not really anything any person can do a thing about. Yet the Academy doesn't try to affect the world in a far more easily accessible and, as far more influential on mankind's existence, obesity and isolation/depression and violent crime in an increasingly sidelined black American community. Newsom has a sick agenda.
I miss Huell's program, but I had to stop viewing this when the guy started talking about the Big Bang Theory. As a Christian and Bible believer, it doesn't fit in my paradigm.
Huell Howser deserves way more hype, this man is a legend.
There should be a 50ft gold statue of him next to the dinosaurs at Cabazon.
@@mikecarter8880 Black lives matter will tear down the statue calling it racist !
He sure was a legend.
I agree that Huell deserves much more attention than he ever got.I really enjoyed all of the shows that he did.

We truly miss this man at our household. His innocence and naive manner masking his incredible ability to disarm anyone. Thanks
Well said😎

Love Huell. He’s a California treasure and he helped to develop my love of Los Ángeles and California. Don’t think anyone could take his place.
RIP Huell. Yet another gem for generations to come.
long live public television for outstanding shows like this.
I've visited there and can't wait to return! THANK YOU Mr. Griffith for leaving this Observatory to America.
I immigrated to USA when I was 4 yrs old. I didn't speak English & our family never afforded cable TV.
Huell Howser was how I learned English and "American" mannerisms. Re-watching these videos have made me realize I learned a lot of my social skills through Huell too!
Thank you for sharing! Sure miss Huell Houser.

Huell Howser is California’s Gold ✨
That is the title of one of Huell's videos, they are all gold, though.
His enthusiasm is marvelous!
Miss this guy so very much. RIP Huell Howser ❤️
Loved his style of asking questions as if he had no clue, so people that he was interviewing could explain their stories. True genius.

This show was outstanding. What a municipal treasure. Thanks for including "Rebel..." also. Thank you!

@gregorygarcia7807 Huell Howser was from Tennessee. He mentioned that on certain episodes sometime ago.
@michaelbauers8800 Dr. Krupp mentioned that the observatory has been filmed in at least 300 motion pictures since its inception in 1935.
I wonder how many movies this has been featured in? I have see it in quite a few.
Rebel Without a Cause is the most well known probably
Terminator part 1, and Jurassic Park come to mind.

Why is this man constantly shouting 🤯.
No reason to carry that mic 😂
Really hard to watch/listen to. Interesting topic though.
Greek Revival blah blah blah... smh. In other words it was a defensive tower/shrine that was turned into a observatory.
Can you elaborate on what you mean?
I miss Huell's program, but I had to stop viewing this when the guy started talking about the Big Bang Theory. As a Christian and Bible believer, it doesn't fit in my paradigm.
@KB6YAF maybe the bible holds nothing of value ,
Such dogma narrows your world view.
Lmao
Well it’s your loss
Huell sounds like he's straight form Georgia. I've always thought that.
