4:33 I discovered this video by looking into a sample off “buzzcut daisy” by Jane Remover, sampling this conversation directly. That’s how I ended up here, learning about the touching legacy of Huell, and I’m glad his story wasn’t lost on me. Now I’ll be glad that I’ll hear this delightful man’s voice will forever be captured in my daily music playlist.

Jane is seriously a genius for sampling this. Huell is kind of an icon of niche 2000s media. As a kid growing up in california, when we didn’t have cable i watched huell howser TONS on pbs as a kid. My aunt was even in an episode one time, eating tacos in the background haha, too bad we never found which episode it was. But if you grew up watching california public tv in the 2000s, you’ll instantly recognize his voice. If you’re really interested in him, there’s a small museum dedicated to him in the Chapman University library in Orange County, it’s very detailed and a quite touching tribute to his legacy. Coincidentally, I stumbled upon it last year while renting a laptop so I could make some beats on garageband , waiting for my girlfriend to get out of her class. This was around the time i got into jane removers music as well, and i even made a song which samples huell howser at that time! If i listened back to it now, im sure it is horrible haha. But anyways, here I am listening to frailty a year later, getting ready to see her live in concert, and i realized Huell was sampled in buzz cut daisy! Life is a small world

Kat it isn't he same, look it up on Google earth, the sea is drying up, the trailers in the salt ponds have been tractored down, the rusty steel cars and fences have been recycled and the sea level is at least 10 feet lower (I am thinking 15 but it is hard to tell). The town of Bombay beach is still there and a few of the original people but this video is about 20 years old now and after 20 years it is sort of a ghost town, lots of empty houses and trailers. It is a sad remembrance of a resort town that once was. Salton Sea is was a unique accident with a short lived life that I got to see the end of in the 1980s. For over 30 years now there has been all sorts of studies and talks of what to do with it and it appears the answer is just let it dry up and the silt from the sea bed blow into So Cal.
The new talk is salt marsh beds across the bottom of the sea bed to save the birds.

My wife and I passed by there a couple of years ago to check out what the Salton Sea was all about. It was depressing. The area we passed through, with people still living there, looked like a perfect setting of a post apocalyptic story and if we saw zombies start to walk around the houses, we wouldn't be surprised. We parked and I walked down the beach to the water, which stunk of sulfur and other chemicals. It was really sad because I have a friend at work who tells of her childhood in the 70's when they would go to the Sea for vacations....

I've watched Huell since 95 till the sudden news of his death. I still have a coffee mug adorned with his image and sweater. I was lucky enough to work at Chapman U for 2 wks and overjoyed to hear Huell donated all his work, his office, his broadcast equipment and all his videos to this school. It's located at the basement of the library. I just cried

I wish someone would take over this show, it was the best! I think what made it different was how Huell would talk to random people and next thing you know they were co hosts!😂

It is crazy property can still be bought down there. A bizarre place to spend winters, but pretty affordable, if you have 14k bucks, you can buy a home for the winter.

God, this place is so cool. I visited Bombay Beach in 2014, but I didn't realize there was so much there. I just went to the area with the corroded bus and the flooded out "dinner house". There were also a couple of mostly-intact houses with old newspaper clippings, clothing/furniture, and writing on the wall. One of the coolest things I've seen is written on one of the walls, "Mother Nature Vs. Capitalism".

This originally aired in 1999. I’m so curious to see the sea now
Edit : I just went. The art installations are cool but the town looks like it has seen better days. Makes me sad to think how these old timers would feel about it now. I am assuming most of them have passed

Happy you made a second trip. I’ve been wanting to go. I would love to see this for myself to appreciate the beauty of it. I’m also very passionate about the deserts so this place seems like a hidden gem
That needs some love to shine.

Have been to all 50 states, HI, Alaska Included. Extensively. Been thru-out Canada. Born and raised in Los Angeles.
Somehow never made it down to these wonderful lands. Known of and about Salton Sea/Slab City for quite some time. Used to watch Huell and California's Gold every chance I got.
Still love the shows. Don't recall this episode but its nice to come across.
Also thank you for giving the original air date, and in fact, the description didn't have it. Any of Huell Howsers old shows I still watch when i see em'.😎✌peace.

@@walterwhite1 I am not sure how the town is still there. Some of the locals do go swim in the sea but I didn’t really see a single soul outside in the town. It’s super far removed from other towns / businesses.

Coincidentally, I watched this episode today (May 25th) on Memorial Day, which is also my dad’s birthday. And the air date (August 27th) is the date that my dad passed away. I guess it’s pretty fitting as the episode deals with a lot of death from the fish skeletons to the locals dying off to the dead town itself. I’m sure that Wayne “Wacko” and Leigh(sp?) are likely dead by now. And we know Huell is no longer with us.

Carlos Rincon Sorry for your loss. I’m watching this today, day after you did 🙂 To me, 21 years ago doesn’t feel like it was that long ago. I couldn’t help laugh at his face when the lady he interviewed told him if he put out info that contradicts the media about Bombay Beach “you’re a dead duck” LOL

    • @RadioReprised
      @RadioReprised 3 роки тому +1

The Siren was tied to the Phone line for the Fire House. That way all the Volunteer Fireman could hear and be ready for a Emergency. My Dad was the Fireman/EMT and our Store was only 100' from the Fire house so response time was better than in the City!......problem was the Hospital was 40 miles in both directions and a lot of folks died on the way no matter what we did.

I was just at Bombay Beach, two weeks ago. I wish I had seen this video before to have some reference. This place is like a ghost/zombie town, now. It doesn’t smell bad at all, but it feels creepy because of all the abandoned homes, graffiti, etc.
It’s still very unique place to visit. It’s so hot over there, even with the wind.

    18:18 “What is this?”...crunch, crunch...
    That’s how untouched beaches are,
    shells and skeletons,
all sun bleached and broken down by the tumbling in the waves.
And then sand blasted on the shore by the wind.
