Instead of making an Xbox One laptop, how about trying to fit one into a 4K TV, so it's an all-in-one device like an iMac? TVs are pretty thin these days so I think it would be quite a challenge to include a full games console!
Hey man i know you must get this all the time but your videos are truly inspirational, i prefer watching these than tv anyday! they are interesting, informative and entertaining! thanks
I rekon try and make it not only a gaming laptop, but a ultra slim gaming laptop, remove the blueray and add a simple pipeline system for cooling, im sure a slim laptop can be built from it all.
***** lol I can tell you're young kid, I work 50+ hours a week I could easily afford a 1080, but why would I? its extremely overpriced, maybe in another 6 months, just because someone earns some money doesn't mean they have to waste it stupidly.
Ooh... That is one sexy teardown. I seriously love it when companies take into consideration how they assemble their stuff. Makes it look so clean and easy. Also, I know this isn't the Element14 board, and it's an absolutely asinine idea, but I recently was checking out people building PCs in old NES cases. I think a FauxBox One may be pretty cool. Repurpose the case to mount something completely different in it after you do the inevitable laptop mod. Leave nothing to waste. :P
18:25 TMDS (HDMI) actually uses three differential pairs on three "channels". The other pair is PLL/clock. As for those TDMS traces, only one runs to the chipset as it's HDMI input or capture. The other HDMI ports runs to a TMDS controller and from there directly to the APU.
His suggestion wouldn't cost anything at all. AMD brought their 'APU's out in 2013. JJ, I knew what both of you meant, just ripping on the Spoder a little.
xxpyroxx75 dude most laptops have interrogated gpus like in the motherboard. Usually high end workstation laptops have dedicated gpus and gaming laptops have dedicated gpus
Hey Ben, decent teardown yet again. One key thing you left out. The Xbox one S APU has supposedly been upgraded to 14nm FinFet drastically reducing power requirements and heat output which is one of the biggest reasons this console exists, the new proccess let MS make a much cheaper system.
Anybody looking at this video in the present, the Xbox one S does do 4k upscaling in games now, not just for 4k video streaming. When this video came out the feature was not implemented. The Xbox one S also does native 1440p gaming at 60 frames per second.
Hi Ben just discovered your channel, I have also subscribed and I will share it around; your level headed tear downs give a clear advantage to he XBOX 1 S, better controller, newer components and quality built. I will continue to support your channel as what you are doing for less able Gamers is important work, as Games can help reduce feelings of isolation and bring people together regardless of ability. Happy New Year 2017 I look forwards to more of your great content Respect+Peace ::D
Ben, Microsoft stated that the games don't run natively in 4k but the XBOX One S does come with a 4k upscaler to where it can upscale games to a NEAR 4k look.
I would like to see thinnest possible battery power laptop with out the bluray drive, if it requires the drive to boot, maybe you can take the bluray apart and only use the PCB.
Can always use a laptop screen, allows you to run it off the 12volt supply of PSU assuming there's enough overhead, they're thin and light, the only downside is you need to locate the driver board.
Ben didn't mention the biggest changes, which are that the APU is manufactured using 16nm FinFET now and thats how it produces less heat. In addition. the GPU half of it is clocked higher now, boosting performance in some titles.
Hey Ben, there is one thing you got wrong: The Xbox One S does an upscale of game graphics. So you can actually play games in 4k, but it's of course only upscaled 4k. Looks better than normal 1080p , though.
An Xbox One Slim tablet would be pretty cool, especially if you could make it battery powered, and maybe hang on the wall. BUT I personally think an Xbox Slim integrated into a big screen TV would be cooler and more interesting to see being done since I haven't seen anything like it yet. Ive wall mounted all my TV's in my house but they all still have consoles, blu-ray players or computers still tethered to them. So yes, it's wall mounted but I still have plenty of cables running to devices that STILL require a shelf or table for them to sit on. My eventual goal is to eliminate all cables tying me down from an all wall mounted setup that would seem to "float" off the wall. So a big screen Xbox/TV combo being made would be pretty cool to see.
There are laptops now with 4k screens, so I am sure you could source one for a Laptop One S Project. IF you decide to go with making a laptop, I was thinking that this time you could incorporate a keyboard. I use a keyboard with my Xbox one all the time, especially when setting up accounts on a game, or searching for movies (Which would look great with the 4k display you source!) **Side note, you were talking about the one power switch board that had circuitry but no chips. It could be like that because the One S controller now uses Bluetooth instead of Wifi connections. Just a thought!
I would love to see some kind of portable arcade machine, in the sense that the controls are built into the device where a keyboard would go on a laptop. Not sure if that would work or not, but if it would it would be cool.
To replace the drive: Clone using DOS and xBox hdd cloning software (Cannot remember the name) but the xBox will only accept certain model HDD/SDD drives as a system (Non-external) drives.
Ben, i've got an idea for a project for the Xbox One S, a portable system with a screen (big shock, i know!) but one with a built in projector as well. A screen for playing on your own, say on a trip or holiday, but the projector for big screen gaming and movies and stuff.
Hi ben, i cant understand half of what you are saying but its still great to see you tear into these. Anyway you could do a psvita\ psvita slim\psp tear down?? Maybe also show what makes them differ?? That would be awesome. Thank you.
I'd like to see you build this into a wearable unit. You would build the xbox one and batteries into a backpack-type contraption that would actually go on the front. (So you could sit down and play it.) You would make a helmet and build the screen/s and audio into it. (As well as refreshment accommodations and possibly waste management.) The emphasis would be on EXTREME gamers looking for all advantages mods can give them without actually cheating, as well as the extreme laziness that comes with being a gamer. Not having to get up for anything at all. The waste management is really a goof, and wouldn't be necessary for portability... but would certainly be something different that would make it a poopular build.
Thanks for the great video.. again !!! 1. BluRay drive, could you make it USB? then you only need to plug it in when needed when on the go? 2. Laptop version... of course :-D 3. Nice custom wood case??? mmm... 4. Maybe try to make it REALLY slim... The heat sink looks about as slim as you could get it but... Thanks again.
Whoever put that master chief engraving inside there must have known people were going to go snooping around inside it. They might as well put a sticker inside saying "If you are reading this, you voided your warranty. Shame on you, but also have fun exploring. :)".
Mod a laptop screen to work for the Laptop One, that would be cool to learn how to do. But either way, make sure it's 1080p and IPS. Also battery powered would be cool. And keep an HDMI out too.
You can't shrink the partitions on Xbox One's anymore, they fixed that in an update sadly. If you have a 500GB model you can clone the drive to 500GB or 512GB SSD (480GB SSD won't work) or an SSHD drive of you wanna save some money. The Xbox One uses NTFS but breaks specification by having more than 4 primary partitions on on single drive. The filesystem uses 128-bit AES encryption to stop you from fiddling with it and each partition is signed by a key. (I've spent quite a lot of time recently upgrading the drive on my Xbox One :P)
I like your teardowns because you talk about it as you're tearing it down. I see videos on here that are so boring because it's just a video with some music
Great! Do you have a plan about to make a Xbox one controller for xbox360? Or can you give me some advise? Wiring the two controllers pcb together? Please help
Would you build a Nixie clock? I want to build one but the other videos on youtube don't have good instructions. Also if you could possibly do it with a raspberry pi.
Perhaps turn it into a stand-up arcade machine, cabinet and all? Or a mini-cabinet, in the style of some of the "tabletop" form factor machines that you sometimes see in bars, with a lazy susan swivel mount underneath.
I think it would be cool to make it a laptop in an original Xbox one case. Since the S is 40% smaller it will definitely fit into an original ONE case and an LCD screen and it's components.
Also they can't actually void your warranty just because you broke a warranty void if removed sticker, that's illegal. They would have to prove that the problem with the console that you're trying to get them to fix, was caused by a modification you have done to the system.
I think that the new controllers are blue tooth? And I saw a UA-cam clip that said the new Gears of War game was going to be 4K gaming...? I agree that making this into a laptop would be great and nostalgic, and that Xbox One portable/tablet thing didn't impress me as much as your 360 laptops did...but I do think that there might be something more radicle out there... You mentioned that the psu was within spitting distance of battery power, but would that battery also be enough to power a screen though? Remember those old flat panel/dvd combo things? What about a 32" TV/Xbox One S combo thingy? it's a little bit bulkier than a laptop or portable, but it's all in one, and at 32" still kinda portable...or maybe a 27 incher?
I wonder if Ben has some thoughts about hacking the system and somehow making it even smaller. The individual internal parts look like they're covered in more plastic. Maybe liquidcool the system instead of using a heat sink and a large fan. Either way I cant wait to see what Ben does with it!
Since is only 1 connector for the board now instead of two do you have any information on adding back buttons on the XB1S. and which points on the once connector correspond to A,X,Y,ground etc. Thanks!
@17:00 ish: Ben, my $1,500 (retail when new) laptop with 970m and an i7 (much more powerful than the APU being used in the Xbox One/S) only requires a 230W power supply. You can EASILY run an Xbox One S off of laptop battery. Also, if you're spending $3k on a laptop it better have be the Titan X or SLI non-mobile 980s.
5:52, yeah it just sounds like a jet engine when you game for longer than 5 minutes. My Xbox One rarely has to spin the fan up that much. In fact I have only heard my Xbox One fan spin up twice since I have had it (and both times it only spun up for about a minute), and I was a day one purchaser of both systems. Hopefully since the Xbox One S' APU went through a die shrink, it wont be like the PS4 is in terms of how much sound it puts off.
I would like to know what voltage range you can feed it if you removed the power supply. Essentially I would like to mod it to work in my RV from the 12V battery bank. That will make it so I don't have to waste power converting to 110 then have it converting the power back. Hoping the X-Box board has some kind of filtering to allow a small voltage range.
From an engineering point of view, I would like to see the ram closer to the chipset and higher capacity. By the way, I am very very interested in this video. I am a computer technician by profession and one of my colleagues refurbishes XBox and PlayStation consoles. It is a very lucrative skill that I am wanting to have.
Don't know if anyone has said this, but what about a Xbox One S Tablet! Lol! I know it probably isn't possible without you rebuilding the pieces, but with the talk of using a battery it seems like something that would be even more awesome!
You should make a portable Xbox one TV. Build the Xbox right into the back of a 22" portable tv so you can just stick it were very out want and just play. Also either make it battery powered or add a battery to keep the Xbox on, that way you can unplug it, move it to a different room, plug it in and immediately continue your game!
I am curious if you can add your own efficient headset, Low Profile ultra thin heatsink, Found some online, and add the ssd, Apply artic silver on that cpu and just have a nice cool, fast xbox one s i think it would be pretty cool to see, And maybe customize it with a clear case topping, or modify it. :)
Instead of making an Xbox One laptop, how about trying to fit one into a 4K TV, so it's an all-in-one device like an iMac? TVs are pretty thin these days so I think it would be quite a challenge to include a full games console!
holy shit :)
That would be an awesome idea, bet the switching from TV to xbox may be an issue doing it via software rather than needing some kind of switch.
That is a great idea, I would also really like to see this, please work your magic Ben!
that's what I Hope he does
That's a really awesome idea!
Love the use of 90's Alternative music for an expressive response! Good stuff right there :)
when I was a kid I used to take apart my electronics and put them back together wondering how things work, your show really brings back good memories
Hey man i know you must get this all the time but your videos are truly inspirational, i prefer watching these than tv anyday! they are interesting, informative
and entertaining! thanks
Really enjoy tear-down vids, there's just something satisfying about them.
Ben Heck i love your UA-cam videos and your channel.. keep up the great work.. look forward to seeing more
easily my new favourite youtube show 😊 thank you and keep up the amazing work guys, thank you.
I rekon try and make it not only a gaming laptop, but a ultra slim gaming laptop, remove the blueray and add a simple pipeline system for cooling, im sure a slim laptop can be built from it all.
omg hi emudshit love your stuff dude
+dan k thanks man :)
+LInusSexTips haha laptops are for peasants" = another way of saying your a broke kid ay.
***** you're, dual 1080s ay ill cry that i dont have those in my new house while watching the football on my new 70inch sony tv, ohwell
***** lol I can tell you're young kid, I work 50+ hours a week I could easily afford a 1080, but why would I? its extremely overpriced, maybe in another 6 months, just because someone earns some money doesn't mean they have to waste it stupidly.
omg the difference in interior design between xbox slim and ps4 slim is amazing! xbox is so oldschool
Ooh... That is one sexy teardown. I seriously love it when companies take into consideration how they assemble their stuff. Makes it look so clean and easy.

That already exists. It's called a Windows 10 laptop PC. ;)
xxpyroxx75 dude most laptops have interrogated gpus like in the motherboard. Usually high end workstation laptops have dedicated gpus and gaming laptops have dedicated gpus
Ryan Curnow they must have a insane CPU to run games on ultra
Ohhh did not know this channel existed... right up my alley subbed
have fun with the backlog!
Hey Ben, decent teardown yet again.

Ben Heck...I love you...Thank you for your red hair and smart brain....
You're welcome. I have always said that the two most important things in life are the color of your hair and the smartness of your brain.
I disagree. I think the most important thing in life is chicken nuggets
Very much true.
Chicken nuggets and hot pockets
BAHADUR KHATRI DAL no thanks. xbox live sucks.
The extra chip in the controller is a bluetooth radio, the old one didn't have that. You can use it via Bluetooth on other devices now.
Very cool to watch, thanks!
Don't be afraid to ask for likes guys. Great work. Helps me with my understanding of the unit.
Just spewing out nerd-technological lingo I've grown up being fluent in, but much much more thorough. Thanks Mr. Heck!
Very Detailed! Great Video!
Seeing how compact it looks, I'd sugest trying to do your best at making it the thinest laptop mod you've ever done as a challenge.
Hi Ben just discovered your channel, I have also subscribed and I will share it around; your level headed tear downs give a clear advantage to he XBOX 1 S, better controller, newer components and quality built. There was an actual ad inside the video, I feel like it's 90s again! :D
WAHOO, right when the Xbox One came out I wanted Ben to review it YEAH
Xbox One S
We already had planned on it
+SwollenRhino ?
The conversations you have on this video are wierd as fuc but love it
you can still use the Kinect on the Xbox one s but you have to buy a converter to hook it up
Can always use a laptop screen, allows you to run it off the 12volt supply of PSU assuming there's enough overhead, they're thin and light, the only downside is you need to locate the driver board.
"And a Car" - Thats the god damn 2017 Ford GT EcoBoost
Well dang! Didn't see he made the original Xbox One into a tablet. I need to watch more, lol!
"i dont know what warranty is, i dont even care" made me lol
Brick city?
You're so cool.
You can say anything you like.
Good informative vid!
Integrate the system into a 4k LCD TV, use perhaps a slim bluray player if possible, kind of like those tvs with integrated dvd players
the only thing i was waiting for was. to see the video on the build you you just mentioned here. xbox into a laptop.
Ben didn't mention the biggest changes, which are that the APU is manufactured using 16nm FinFET now and thats how it produces less heat. In addition. the GPU half of it is clocked higher now, boosting performance in some titles.
if it works dont change it (response to the cables not changing for years :) )
fantastic video . thank you so much man. Subbed!
Hey Ben, there is one thing you got wrong: The Xbox One S does an upscale of game graphics. So you can actually play games in 4k, but it's of course only upscaled 4k. Looks better than normal 1080p , though.

Very entertaining - highly amused by the passive-aggressive sarcasm

Awesome breakdown, the Xbox One S is steller!
Make some kind of portable with a battery pack like was mentioned, and maybe find a way to add one of those pocket sized projectors into the unit.
Amazing work, cool stuff!
I would love to see some kind of portable arcade machine, in the sense that the controls are built into the device where a keyboard would go on a laptop. Not sure if that would work or not, but if it would it would be cool.
A All in One would be cool for this build. Maybe into the back of a cheap BenQ 4K panel.
To replace the drive: Clone using DOS and xBox hdd cloning software (Cannot remember the name) but the xBox will only accept certain model HDD/SDD drives as a system (Non-external) drives.
I'd love to see you guys reforge it into a portable Xbox one s, I would totally love to have something like that
Ben, i've got an idea for a project for the Xbox One S, a portable system with a screen (big shock, i know!) but one with a built in projector as well. A screen for playing on your own, say on a trip or holiday, but the projector for big screen gaming and movies and stuff.
too costly
You can get projectors for $ 50 now. I know they're not the greatest but would do for a project.
(So you could sit down and play it.)
You would make a helmet and build the screen/s and audio into it. (As well as refreshment accommodations and possibly waste management.)
The emphasis would be on EXTREME gamers looking for all advantages mods can give them without actually cheating, as well as the extreme laziness that comes with being a gamer. Not having to get up for anything at all.
The waste management is really a goof, and wouldn't be necessary for portability... but would certainly be something different that would make it a poopular build.
Thanks!
I would like to see a game sphere, a game cube in the shape of a sphere with some extras.
It's SPHERICAL!
Thaw me out when the Okama Game Sphere get's released!
I just want to see him do anything at all with a gamecube :)
The Okama Game Sphere
+jorenmartijn A portable Gamecube would probably be doable
Thanks for the great video.. again !!!
1. BluRay drive, could you make it USB? then you only need to plug it in when needed when on the go?
2. Laptop version... of course :-D
3. Nice custom wood case??? mmm...
4. Maybe try to make it REALLY slim... The heat sink looks about as slim as you could get it but...
Thanks again.
I like the sound of silence reference
So will you also be doing a teardown of the PS4 slim?
Ben it think the APU in the Xbox has the north bridge integrated in to it and what you are pointing to is the south bridge.
By North Bridge I assume you mean South Bridge as the NB is built into the APU
If possible make some sought of portable VR device. If not possible, it would still be cool to see Ben do something with VR in the future.
Make it even smaller! Ditch the blu-Ray drive. If you do turn it into a laptop can you make it have a curved display?
This would make a great laptop. Go for it.
And keep an HDMI out too.
you should turn that thing into a "control surface" for audio and video editing softwares ;)
You can't shrink the partitions on Xbox One's anymore, they fixed that in an update sadly. Great!
Do you have a plan about to make a Xbox one controller for xbox360?
Or can you give me some advise?
Wiring the two controllers pcb together?
Please help
I want to see something done with the 4k bluray more than the APU ;)
It should be made in seperated part that clicks in place. So take what you need for this and that weekend.
lol toad the wet sprocket. I guess you won't take these things for granted anymore
Great video, loved the diaper comment. Laptop mod would be my choice with batteries.
Love your work Ben, how about a video of you converting a Nintendo 64 controller into a wireless one
My Xbox one s didn't come with the stand...
mine eather ;/
DarkestTV Gamer only the 2TB will come with one
Cause ur broke and cant get the 2tb one.....or a special addition
Would you build a Nixie clock? I want to build one but the other videos on youtube don't have good instructions. Also if you could possibly do it with a raspberry pi.

would love to see a SSD in a console hopefully Scorpio will have one, it would likely speed up gaming load time also system startup time.
did you know that the controller also now has Bluetooth connection to synchronize with your Windows 10 PC without the need for a proprietary dongle.?
Social Gamer what if Nothing is on the screen and it is blue .
Also they can't actually void your warranty just because you broke a warranty void if removed sticker, that's illegal. They would have to prove that the problem with the console that you're trying to get them to fix, was caused by a modification you have done to the system.

Although it can't render games natively at 4k it does upscale all games to 4k.

That Xbox on the inside is labeled like the old batcave, I approve
The heatsink is smaller, but the fan is actually slightly bigger I think.
I find teardowns oddly therapeutic
