Burnout Revenge was my Vietnam if you catch my drift. I still get PTSD from the dreary atmosphere of any game as it brings me back to the all-out car warfare of Road Rage in Motor City/Detroit.
Does anyone else get the feeling that if Sgt. Mark IV was around during the Vietnam War, he'd be one of those guys set loose in the enemy trenches at night with nothing but a knife and the promise of a new high score to keep him going? Or that if he didn't have doom modding to keep him occupied, he'd be the world's most prolific serial killer? Like holy hell this guy's level of industry makes me tired just thinking about it. Damn good thing for all of us it's pointed at Doom.

Say what you want about Sergeant Mark, but he is a really good modder, and has a certain integrity about him. He does all this for free. He gets no benefit from these mods despite the fact that he could with his popularity in the community, yet he makes them free anyway and delivers consistently good experiences. Even if he's a hothead you have to respect that.

The M16A2 that featured a 3 round burst wasn't adopted until later in the rifle's life in the 80s with the M16A2, I think. I don't think soldiers in Vietnam had this version of the rifle. Also, all the revisions in the Vietnam War used 20 round magazines. Just a fun fact, possibly.

I like the Soldier Of Fortune 2 cover & shoot gunplay system Sgt:Mark_IV hardcoded into VietDoom. As this demonstrates that tactical mil-sim based fps could be created in future Doom2 modding projects.
in machineguns, tracers are generally mixed in with jacketed rounds at a ratio of only 1 in 5 or less .. they are just so the guy can see where hes shooting they dont represent all the rounds in the air
SgtMarkIV finally makes a modern military shooter in Doom engine? It's almost not surprising, all things considered. Props to him for sticking to his guns, I guess.
Finally just got this, have not yet given it the time to really understand the changes, but baseline just shooting and surviving is pretty cool, I love total overhauls like this, and it’s nice to play something a little different from project brutality. Good stuff
Have been searching the comments for someone else who knew of this game! NAM was one of my many childhood games, along with WWII, Duke Nukem 3D, Heretic, BLOOD, DooM 1+2, RotT, Blake Stone, but anyways I played all these games to death and the hardest of them were NAM and WWII! But this mod looks like it was heavily inspired by NAM and might even borrow some things. I have both NAM and WWII on CDrom still to this day but also own both on Steam, but cant bring myself to play them these days due to I just get my ass handed to me lol! Maybe someday I'll fully devote myself to push through the frustration of failing over and over but I think til then, Ill give this mod a try to see if its a bit more forgiving than NAM. Still glad to see someone else out there knows of NAM and its very hard difficulty spike :)
If this is the level of how much else you can do beyond what's originally intended with the Doom engine, imagine what is going to be done in the future with the Doom 3 engine if not through the Doom 2016 engine. If there is one thing that should be included, the Vietnam war song as the menu theme music would be a nice touch.

@13:30 ... that's not a tank. That's a tank destroyer. In fact, it's an M50 Ontos. Pretty cool that they put that in this wad. As a sidenote, those recoilless guns they have on the side require the crew to get out to reload them.
Being a history buff I like the added camouflage element inside this mod, for example some VC hide in the trees to snipe and others are in the grass. I also love that they retextured the weapons and hud so at least it’s historically accurate with the M16’s and M14’s. I hope they’ll add the ARVN (Army of the Republic of Vietnam) either as a playable class or support wise.
First tank (tank destroyer) is an M50 Ontos. Second looks like it's supposed to be an M48? Maybe an M47. Hard to tell from the the angle. Would be cool to see the Sheridan and the ZSU make it in. And the T-34 and T-54/55 too of course.

Frankly, it amazes me that they included the ability to switch between full and semi-auto, yet there are no iron sights or optics to take advantage of the benefits of semi-auto capability. To take advantage of that, you need iron sights as a bare-minimum.

well it's not really the old engine anymore technically. Gzdoom is a modern sourceport which has alot of fancy features which the old doom engine lacked.

Nope, it's full-auto. And the 18-round capacity is intentional - the magazines were historically underloaded for reliability

I like the setting, there are few vietnam games, but those vehicle sections really make me want a Doom Mech game.

I always loved this kind of gameplay in CoD, so seeing something like this as a Doom mod is fantastic.
I think the tank in the vehicle mission is supposed to be an M41 Walker Bulldog or M48 Patton judging from the lumpy design and muzzle brake.

Mark tries to keep a balance between historical accuracy in events and weapons, with some staple doom elements
veitdoom is quite impressive in technical ability and gameplay. sgt mkiv really put a lot of effort and love into this you can tell.
