I've used both a wheelchair and crutches - house definitely deserves the parking lot. Cuddy has no idea how easy it is to fall with only one functioning leg.
To be fair as well, House's leg is in constant pain isnt it? So for him, walking that extra bit is more painful and stressful than the lady in the wheel chair. You could argue he is partially handicapped? and has rights to the space as well. I thought the whole point of a handicapped space was for convenience, so isnt someone who gets more relief from it more entitled? (house) Also its more dangerous and easier to slip with a cane than a wheel chair... plus its also a hospital zone so i don't think anyone is going to get hit by a car and there is plenty of people around to help a person on a wheel chair.
That's why somewhere (especially a hospital) should have multiple disability parking spaces!!! They both deserve it!! For fucks sake, shift another employee who is closer to the door, but it's handicapped, and instead is just lucky or won the auction. I don't have the best mental image of the parking lot from this clip, but it looks like there are people parked right next to the handicapped spot. And House doesn't even need a wider spot, unlike the wheelchair lady.
@@AbsolXGuardian House doesn't need a wider spot, he needs a closer spot. Walking on ice with a bum leg and a cane is a huge walking hazard and her argument that she deserves the spot because she can't walk is kinda ridiculous. She is in an electric wheelchair, the tank of all wheelchairs. She doesn't have to move her arms or have someone assist her (I mean she can but she doesn't have too) and they are much safer in ice and snow than a cane. House also experiences much more pain than she does, which could cause him more problems walking and he could slip and hurt himself. Cuddy should realize that and she should have CONSULTED the two doctors before moving house. They both should get spots closer to the hospital entrance, Cuddy was just being irrational and trying to do something without arguing with House.
This isn’t a disability olympics. Both have right to the space and it comes down to a first come first serve. If this becomes an issue again and again then the hospital need to adjust their parking arrangement for more disabled spaces. House only needs a closer space.

The ONE time he got out of the chair and it was to save a kid? Yeah I'm with House he fucking earned that, he was in the chair for the whole week minus one important incident that required him to stop the bet for that moment.
All though to be fair and yet quite cold, not being to help someone in those kinds of situations on your own may be considered as one of the more horrible cons of staying in a chair. A lot can happen in a hospital and at times, not being to help out in those emergency situations can be frustrating and for someone like House all the more since he is all about helping people whether he likes to admit it or not. Helplessness not for yourself, but for the people you could have been helping if you were just not in a chair.
ya but the point of the bet was to prove that being in a wheelchair was harder than walking with a cane. House could've easily lasted the week without getting out of the wheelchair, his patient, not so much. So unless they were counting emotional pain in this bet, it wouldn't really make sense. Also situations where you'd need to run to a patient to save their life isn't that common, unless of course, you're House.
I believe Hugh Laurie actually hurt his leg in the show so they added that in to make it look like he was physically handicapped and that he was not able to walk properly so they added in that bit in the show.
@@GenGamesUniverse *Did you ever see the House M.D. Swan Song that was a "making of" bonus of Season 8? It talked about how they made the character of House. Originally the idea of the character was he was in a wheelchair. It wasn't convenient for all the things they needed House to do so they switched the story to him using a cane. Then they added the muscle death story to justify him using that cane. There was no accident or him "hurting himself"*
Speaking as someone in a wheelchair (mine is electric like the woman's), House is right. That excuse she gave about it being dangerous was kinda lame. Yes, cars do have trouble seeing you *sometimes*, but having reflectors helps that (similar to reflectors on a bicycle), and there's always the phrase, "Look both ways before you cross the street." Doesn't always guarantee safety and accidents of course can still happen, BUT ultimately it IS easier for her to cross the parking lot than it is for him, especially since her wheelchair is electric and not manual. If it was a manual chair, it might be more of a debate, but even then, House is dealing with chronic pain that would be aggravated by the extra walking and is also at a higher risk of falling (especially in winter), so point goes to House. House should get the parking space.
Yeah, I'm with House. The space only specifies handicapped, it doesn't mean you have to have a wheelchair, or even a leg disability. If there was a doctor or nurse with a visual handicap of some sort, he or she would be equally qualified for it, and it's not like that's the only handicapped space at the hospital. House has been there longer than Dr. Wheellegs and is more likely to slip on ice with his cane then she is in her automated wheelchair. It's like they say, if the cane might slip, you must give it (I think they say that)
@@masterofrecipe8092 actually, depending on their injury extent, they may have a handicapped-friendly car or may have just enough mobility to get the wheelchair out. It's like blindness; people tend to think it's just one thing - you can see or you can't -- but there's actually levels of blindness, from shape only to single eye to light/dark to, yes, complete blindness. All this isn't to say the lady isn't faking, just that they may have more ability to move than we think while still needing the wheelchair the majority of the time
a yellow paper crown That’s actually pretty cool. My best friend was declared legally blind a few months ago and he was devastated because he wanted to be a doctor. I’ll make sure to tell him.
House is actually right. If you're in a wheelchair, an extra 10-50 yards isn't going to be anymore inconvenient outside of time. The person using the cane on the other hand experiences physical pain when walking that distance.
@@Aemilius46 No, if somebody makes a good argument then I listen, if somebody doesn't then I don't listen. That's called rational thinking. Immediately suggesting that somebody else would eat poop, well that's not a rational thing to suggest. In fact, it makes me think you're a child..
@@arandombard1197But this is reality. Rationality doesn't mean a thing. Most things people do aren't rationally sound. And the more people involved, the less rational they'll get. If we did rational things, the US would have excellent public transport and thus less cars, thus less costs to maintain roads.
As a wheelchair user (not electric though) I would argue crossing the road, particularly in adverse weather. For example, a wheelchair requires a low curb to get off the road whereas someone on a cane, in theory, could climb up at any point. Due to being lower down, a wheelchair user is also more likely to be missed by a driver. Making crossing the road harder/more dangerous. I'm not claiming one is worse than the other but more just playing devil's advocate because despite one seeming to look better from a distance, there are factors not considered.
@@pun-inator6075 But if the design of the parking space is made in such way that a handicapped person (No matter what kind of handicape) would need to cross the road, then I would say it is a bad layout or design. Most handicap spaces I had seen here in Denmark is as close to the main entrance as possible, and almost always on the same side as the main entrance, so no need to cross where the cars are driving I would say both House and the other doctor in the wheelchair both have good arguements for the handicap space. But is it a failure in the layout of the parking lot for something like that to happen

Shouldn't he get the spot anyway? They were talking about that legal thing, she's in a chair so long distance shouldn't be a problem and he's using a cane so long distance would be.
i think people don't consider things like these as disability... i have a handycap parking card and was yellet at for faking it and not being disabled... i have 25% of eye sight in my both eyes together
@@tamarakolar1051 Because eyes encode movement in addition to vision. If your peripheral eyesight is mostly ok (where rods abound, but cone cells are scarce) you can still perceive movement ok. From the point of view of your eyes and the respective information processing areas in your occipital cortex, movement is basically shifting contrasts around you. Rods are much more capable of detecting it as opposed to cons. So, you can have full vision loss in your central retina (most cone cell are concentrated there), but can still see things moving by using your peripheral / averted vision. Also, there are some other cells (besides rods and cones) that detect light intensities and also play an important role in the regulation of circadian rhythms. The visual system is quite complex and fascinating :)
Her smile dropping off her face as it hit her as he got up from the wheelchair. The limp is so iconic and he is so mobile despite it, we sometimes forget he does have a painful handicap. See him walking without a cane on icy pavement, you realize he may for once not just be acting out, that he DOES need that space., that he's not just standing up for some sort of misguided principle.
“Wheelchair” “Cane!” This argument is hilarious, and these little bits of storytelling make the series what it is. “You couldn’t last one week in a wheelchair.” “Wanna bet?” He knows Cuddy loves a bet. The way he closes the door is hilarious.
3:57 I know that smile is real, because when I was in a wheelchair for a year, I did stuff like that. It's was brilliant. I especially love grabbing the end of rails and spinning on them down ramp stairs.
Cuddy could have just given her the spot she switched House to (she said it wasn't that far) and told her there wasn't anything closer. She has wheels and is used to having to maneuver around dangers. House can't outmaneuver pain.
@@xander1052 They mention the disabilities act because House CAN walk 50 yards, and following the same logic, Whitner cannot move 50, legally, they had to give her a space closer to the hospital.

I think you missed MY point. The legal standing is dumb. If she can make the journey from the front door to her lab, which is pretty much certainly more than 50 yards, why can't she cross a parking lot?
So someone who has 2 full legs with no pain, that can't walk, but has a powered wheelchair, has a stronger "cripple card" than a person that has 1.5 legs, with lots of pain? Both clearly qualify to have a disabled parking spot but Dr. House should have the closer one because of the physical pain he must endure by having having to walk at all. The other doctor has no pain associated with sitting in a comfortable chair, at least none is implied in the show. The ONLY inconvenience associated with having to park one row further away is simply having to push the joystick forward a few seconds longer than she would otherwise have to. Saying you can't "see"" someone in a wheelchair is just plain ludicrous because the same argument can be said for walkers, and the issue of "ice" is far more of an issue for someone on their feet than in a chair with FOUR points of contact on the ground. According to statistics, nearly 6,000 pedestrians (walkers) were KILLED just in 2017, which doesn't include thousands more walkers who were also hit but survived their injuries. Those who think someone in a motorized chair deserves to park closer over someone using a cane who suffers physical pain only feel the way they do because they feel sorry for the person in the chair because of what they SEE. They're letting what they see influence their argument. If they used the proper argument of who physically suffers more then Dr. House should be the one with a closer parking spot, not someone in a motorized chair who only has to sit and push a stick to move. This isn't about who has the greater disability, which she clearly does. It's about who suffers more with physical pain, which is Dr. House.
Cause she likes him!! House can get what he wants whenever but he doesn’t because at this core that’s not who he is. He doesn’t have to pursue the affection of every beautiful women that surrounds him. To me there’s great strength in that. He knows what he wants (When it comes to love, which is Stacy)
A lot of people say house is a jerk I get that and yeah he can be a jerk. However I've also noticed that overall when it comes to his patients he does put them before himself showing that he actually does care about them and has good intentions by doing whatever he feels is necessary to save them. Like here when he risked losing this bet to save that kid or when he left that courtroom to save that other person knowing he might be thrown in jail for that. Also these are just a few examples they're many more and yet he's hardly ever thanked and sometimes even punished because that judge had him spend a night in jail despite the fact if he didn't leave someone would of died.
The whole story of the series is that he's a person who hates himself, but loves his job and there are multiple episode (can't remember but I watched it more than twice to remember his characteristics) that proves he is not the type of person most people would think him to be.
This episode kind of paints a picture of why he can be so, House sometimes. Living with a chronic pain condition is miserable. It impacts your moods, your mental state, even how the rest of your body feels. (More than in just painful ways.) You can be the most chipper, positive person in the world, get impacted with a chronic pain condition and it can change you as a person. House was never the nicest guy, but being in constant and intense pain for your whole life pretty much makes a good reason for being a prick. (I have chronic pain, and knowing you can never get away from it can really change your mindset, and not for the better. Why be nice when I hurt? Why bother with people, it takes too much energy, energy I need to get through the rest of this day, etc.)
House doesn't care about his patients he cares about what he can do he solves puzzles that in the process saves lives his patients are meaningless it's their symptoms that he cares about not them themselves .
I know people who have mobility issues. Yes, they're capable of walking with assistance. But it's very difficult for them. It's made even more difficult when we can't find a parking space close to whatever building we need to enter. I'm on House's side. Winter lasts only three months out of the year. So, there goes Whitner's argument. Not only that, but House is at a greater risk when it comes to losing traction. Also, has Whitner ever heard of wheelchair flags?! I think that would solve the visibility issue. Whitner doesn't have much of a case, far as I'm concerned. She doesn't need the space that's closest to the door. House does.
The Ada says that both must be accommodated, not that one should be over the other. Both handicap spaces are fine for both disabilities. And since his disability impacts him more when walking than the wheelchair, then he would win if the ADA did say that.
House would be in the right here, because he has to walk with a cane. The other doctor doesn't, she gets to use a powered wheelchair, which is much easier to manoeuvre through ice and snow (I should know because I used a mobility scooter in snow when it snowed heavily the last year) whereas if House slipped over, he would have injured himself.
House is in the right. they claim she had a visibiltiy issue, but htis is a hospital park and flags are a thing, no one si gonna speed in a hospital parking lot if winyer is the issue house sitll had a case because a cane is in far more danger of losing traction and lead ot injury.
It's great to see the consistency of House's team play out in every episode. Cameron is hyper aware of her surroundings, concerned with people and their feelings/experience, and genuinely curious about everything she sees. Foreman is 100% about the job. Always "on". Not remotely interested in the peripheral "Games" house plays. Chase is clueless and somewhat aloof. Only interested in the superficial, not really paying attention most of the time, kind of "Above" everything.
A sarcastic house? Aside from that one monster house I saw in a movie (I can’t remember the name), I can’t think of any other buildings capable of such complex methods of expression. Ya know, my house has been awfully quiet. I wonder if it’s depressed. Maybe it’s just giving me the silent treatment. Do houses feel depression?
As I wheelchair user I see point especially as handicapped tend to be larger and electric wheelchairs need larger modes of transport to use and the larger space means not getting our a car or van into the road.
“Veni vedi vici” I came, I saw, I conquered Famous line from Julius Caesar House quoted in that last bit for those who never had to decipher Latin before
I love it when House smiles after doing silly things, like slamming against his car in a wheelchair and smiling after struggling to get his wheelchair in said car.
I'm 19 years old and I've used a walking cane for 3 years due to chronic pain. House's points are completely valid. He should be closer because walking causes him pain. Pain causes fatigue. Fatigue causes doctors to make mistakes and puts the patients at risk. Whereas having to wheel a few more meters in an automated wheelchair isn't going to fatigue anyone.
Well in all fairness as pitiful and pathetic he is.....he does have a legit condition, and it was inappropriate for her yo change his parking slot without informing him and not knowing what kind of pain does he go through on the daily.
I kinda agree with him on this one. Like yes she can’t walk and that’s very unfortunate and it can be dangerous crossing parking lots but house has incredibly intense pain in his leg and is forced to put weight on it constantly
Someone whose been in a wheelchair and crutches for many years I actually gotta agree with House....I felt more uneasy and thought I was gonna hurt myself when on crutches rather than a wheelchair it wasn't nearly as big of a deal since I wasn't in as much pain in a chair or in danger

SunneeRaijin love your prof photo
He is handicapped if he didn't have a job he would undoubtedly be on disability, he even has the handicapped parking pass
This isn’t a disability olympics. Both have right to the space and it comes down to a first come first serve. If this becomes an issue again and again then the hospital need to adjust their parking arrangement for more disabled spaces.
House only needs a closer space.

Read this at the exact moment it happened and how much free time did you have lol
The ONE time he got out of the chair and it was to save a kid? Yeah I'm with House he fucking earned that, he was in the chair for the whole week minus one important incident that required him to stop the bet for that moment.
I mean, this is why bets don't work in hospitals.
Helplessness not for yourself, but for the people you could have been helping if you were just not in a chair.
so cuddy argued that he should have stayed in the chair instead of saving a Childs life.
the point is.. a trie dosabled cant get out of the chair when it suits or to save anyone ..
ya but the point of the bet was to prove that being in a wheelchair was harder than walking with a cane. House could've easily lasted the week without getting out of the wheelchair, his patient, not so much. So unless they were counting emotional pain in this bet, it wouldn't really make sense.
Also situations where you'd need to run to a patient to save their life isn't that common, unless of course, you're House.
3:57 I REFUSE to believe that was scripted, look at his face he found that genuinely hilarious

Then they added the muscle death story to justify him using that cane. There was no accident or him "hurting himself"*

Adorable
Brilliantly explained.
I was thinking the same thing.
It's like they say, if the cane might slip, you must give it (I think they say that)
Yeah you're right except someone visually handicapped to an extent that they need the handicapped parking is unlikely to be driving.
All this isn't to say the lady isn't faking, just that they may have more ability to move than we think while still needing the wheelchair the majority of the time
@@masterofrecipe8092 Let just slide that a blind doctor wouldn't be THAT trustworthy...

a yellow paper crown That’s actually pretty cool.
Electric wheelchair especially. But handicap spots aren't meant to be logical
Most handicap spaces I had seen here in Denmark is as close to the main entrance as possible, and almost always on the same side as the main entrance, so no need to cross where the cars are driving
I would say both House and the other doctor in the wheelchair both have good arguements for the handicap space. But is it a failure in the layout of the parking lot for something like that to happen

@@dubious6718 because i love to drive and can somehow see really good when i drive... no one really knows how that is possible
I would've loved it if in a later episode they are outside and you could see the wheelchair in the background. That would have been hilarious.
Some say I took the wheelchair for a "spin"....
House.
I totally agree
“This isn’t about who has a greater disability, it’s about who has more physical moving more distance”.
I agree 100%
I like how house is normally ordered around by cuddy like it's a game but when he really wants something, he knows exactly what button to push
Cause she likes him!! House can get what he wants whenever but he doesn’t because at this core that’s not who he is.

House does.
LivanaFaolan I was with you until you said winter only lasts three months. It can snow from November - April.
The Ada says that both must be accommodated, not that one should be over the other. Both handicap spaces are fine for both disabilities. And since his disability impacts him more when walking than the wheelchair, then he would win if the ADA did say that.

I might be slightly biased, but walking is extremely painful for him. Again, safety precautions have to be shown and demonstrated... Hm, tricky one.
House is in the right.
they claim she had a visibiltiy issue, but htis is a hospital park and flags are a thing, no one si gonna speed in a hospital parking lot
if winyer is the issue house sitll had a case because a cane is in far more danger of losing traction and lead ot injury.
It's great to see the consistency of House's team play out in every episode.
