Very cool. I could see how this would be ideal for young anglers just starting out. I remember that my older kids struggled with timing when it comes to proper hook sets while bobber fishing for panfish, and I have one more at the age where, if they set too hard, the hook comes out. If its too light, we risk losing fish that swallow the hook. Not even to mention the tons of slack in the line due to wind, waves, etc. I'll be getting some circle hooks and rigging up my kid's panfish poles like this. Hoping it takes alot of the frustration out of it for them. Looking forward to trying in on the ice this winter too. Thanks for the video!
I've been using #1 thin wire circles for 3 years now. Best move I ever made. Crappie, Bass, Bluegill, or Catfish. I'm mostly Bluegill Fishing but the rest will get caught too.
i love catfishing with circle hooks. i watch the bobbber go under and then i just start reeling. i tend to have oversized reels on my poles. for example i have a ZEBCO DOCK DEMON 2.5' pole with a PENN PURSUIT4 4000 reel and 20lb mono. the looks i get when i land big cats with it is hilarious.
That's pretty much an identical setup to what I have been using with the slip bobber, but I have been using the walleye wide gap hooks. I will have to try to circle hooks. Looking at them it never made sense how pulling on the eye of the hook during a hook set would cause the point to pull into the fish because it's pretty much at 90 degrees. Thanks for explaining how that works.
You bet! The fish really should be swimming away from you for circle hooks to work properly. The cam action doesn’t work so well if they are facing you.
@@calebwistad I will give them a whirl, I have to now because I'm curious and I have to! lol. I have always had frustrations with losing crappies because of hooking them in the lips. That sucks! They don't call them papermouths for nuthin.
do you still use circle hooks alot now two years later? would love an update vid on this!!! I remember seeing first your vid of bluegill+circle then this one as they were released now a few years ago!!! also, do you ever use circles woth plastics or other techniques? I've seen jon bondy uses circles for dropshotting both smallmouth and walleye with plastics, anything you've experimented with or would be interested in trying out/make vid about? love your vids, keep em up! all the best from sweden! /peter
It definitely works! I meant to try it more last winter but it never panned out. I’ve been using exclusively circle hooks on my slip bobber rigs for walleyes and pike in the summer though and they work fantastic! Get bit off a lot less by pike with them for sure.
As a long time bass fisherman, I have a bad habit of making a wicked hook set! Soooooo hard to break, as soon as I see or feel the bite instinct is to rip their lips off! I have literally done just that, pulled in a set of papermouth lips. Going to try this method, not sure how long it will take me to shake the instinct to try to bury the hook!

Yes. It’s perfect for kids! Good for you for getting them out there.
Not just kids me too at 30yrs old lol I just got back into fishing and I I keep getting bites but need more practice on time and hook setting 😅 🙃
Great video, love the music overlay during the hookset example. Comedic 😂
Haha. Thanks.
Learn something everyday! Thanks!
Glad you found it helpful!

They are amazing little pieces of wire!

I do still use them quite a bit for live bait. I haven’t used them much in other applications though.
What size hook do you use for bluegill
6 or 4
@@calebwistad appreciate it I'm going to try some out this weekend. I have both four and six now
What are your thoughts on using circle hooks on tip-ups for walleye or trout?
It definitely works! I meant to try it more last winter but it never panned out. I’ve been using exclusively circle hooks on my slip bobber rigs for walleyes and pike in the summer though and they work fantastic! Get bit off a lot less by pike with them for sure.
Will this work for bass fishing with a senko or drop shot???
Yes. I think it would work great with a Senko because bass usually don’t let go of them. I know guys who use them on drop shot rigs and sweat by them.
Does the minnow always have to be hooked in the mouth or can it be hooked in the back
Back is best!
Please inform me where we can buy these hooks that suitable for bluegills. I've looked. All I see is saltwater hooks. 2/0- etc. etc.
I have an Amazon link right in the description of the video. I just checked it and the Gamakatsus are in stock in size 6 and 8.
@@calebwistad thanks. Let's go get a stringer of 12 9 inchers.
Where can you crappie fish in FL without a boat?
Man, I wish I could help you! I don’t live in Florida and I haven’t done much freshwater fishing there at all. Sorry!
what size circle hook are you using for crappies?
Mainly #6. I left links in the description for a couple different ones that I use.
Thanks, you may make a decent fisherman out of me yet!

It’s a hard habit to shake!
No hook set? You just took all the fun out of fishing! I'll probably sell my boat now...........................................lol
lol. It takes some getting used to. Great for kids!
Lol “watch this hook set”
Wait, there was no hook set…. 😂
