I have not been much of a panfish or crappie fisherman until this season. Just want to say thank you for showing me several ways to fish for them. Also, really like your videos your explanation is on spot...Sub'd
Stinger works decent with a sowing needle to thread the line through the back as well with the nostril jig, just takes longer to set up, nice too because pikes don't usually short strike me so you can still use a wire leader still but floro line on the stringer, seems to keep the action decent and keeps em alive
I go through the mouth out the gill twist and hook lightly again through the back by the dorsal fin… I don’t hurt the minnow very much doing that and it stays on in pretty good. I also use a stinger hook and let it just hang.
I fish for bucket mouths most of the time and my proffered live bait are 3 to 4" bluegills. I rig them just behind the head through the skin, I never pierce the spine, I use 2/0 bass hooks. I attach a 2 to 3" float, add no weight, set near weedline. I let the gill swim 8" to 1 foot below, catches them everytime.
Great video bud. I’ll absolutely be using these tips. I especially liked bonus tip number 1. I’ve been doing the back dorsal fin setup wrong , ummm, forever. 😬🤦🏻♂️
Yeah. I understand that. I wouldn’t recommend it if it wasn’t going to last. I’ve had mine for going on 8 years now and it’s bounced across miles of ice all winter as well as been in my boat all summer and has held up through all of that abuse. I’m not sponsored by them or anything. I just have been very impressed with the durability of it. It’s definitely an investment though!
Great video!! Which method do you suggest for jigging walleyes during the spring river run? I fish the Wolf, Wisconsin and Rock Rivers here in Wisconsin.
Thanks! In the spring there is usually a bit more current and dirtier water. You can get away with a little less action on the minnow in those conditions. I’d use the behind the head method to keep my minnow on a bit longer but still have some good tail kick. If it’s super snaggy I might go all the way through the back.
@@calebwistad I hear ya but several areas do not allow live minnows and by 2027 they will not be allowed in some Canadaian provinces due to hitchhiking evasive species larvae in the water.
hook type #3, in the mouth, out the gill opening, and through the back, will keep a dead minnow on the hook really well. Add a stinger for extra assurance!@@larrythompson5617
super informative , were all the minnows returned to the wild when finished ? 2 years and PETA has not found you ! that is an accomplishment right there ! UA-cam demonitize you yet ?
I have been hooking minnows in the back the way he says is wrong. When the fish ate feeding aggressively I have balled them up on the hook and gotten bites. When they are finicky, you need to paint black dots on the minnows forehead.
You are not the first person to notice the resemblance! I didn’t even know who he was until someone said I looked like him. But the “old” part? Why you gotta go there? 😂
It’s illegal to move any lake or river water away from the water body you got it from here in Wisconsin. You can’t even legally trailer a full live well if you filled it in the lake.
I debated that when I filmed it. I try to keep it real though and it just made more sense to use real minnows when talking about using real minnows. I don’t think it’s any different than putting them on a hook and letting a fish eat them……
Have you ever used a minnow rig? Wire runs from inside minnows mouth, loop end comes out the anus, horseshoe type hook goes through the loop. Used these for trout fishing years ago
Yes it kills them. I usually ran them in the current with a small split shot. They literally will not come off without being ripped off. Google minnow rig, it may come up.
That would be a concern if this was a live bait rig, but with a jig you are imparting most of the action with your rod so the bait’s liveliness is less important. Fresh dead is always better than frozen when it comes to bait as well.
Your #1 lip mouth is most definitely not the way to hook a minnow it will die very fast with your method ! You only hook the minnow thru the top lip so the moth can stay open and get water / oxygen flow thru mouth and over gills , minnows will live much longer on the hook.
That is true if you plan on using the minnow for a long time, say under a slip bobber, but when I’m jigging, the minnow rarely stays on the hook long enough to kill it, and even if it does I’m still giving the minnow most of the action with my rod anyway. At least that’s how I see it!
Best video on minnow hooking I’ve ever seen. Love your patient explanations. Thanks for sharing this!!
Thanks! That’s great feedback.
Good video i recommend the engle rechargeable bubbler over the clam one battery lasts longer in the cold and there's more settings on the Engle one
Thanks for the tip! I actually recently purchased the Rapala R12 electric fillet knife/aerator combo. That aerator is awesome!
thanks young one, i've never tail hooked before; that was worth the video, but the bonus items were excellent too. i'd give you two thumbs up.
Thanks very much!
Thanks! I've been minnow fishing all my life and never saw 4 of these!
Thanks. Good! Glad you found the video!
Me too I would use crayfish if I could get enough
Once again, great video! So glad I found your channel
Thanks and I appreciate it!
Very informative on both rigging minnows and type of jig to use with various methods. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching and I’m glad you enjoyed it!
No minnows were harmed in the filming of this video… 😂
This is now officially the least true statement in this comment section. 😂
😂😂😂
Great info Sir. Detailed and to the point.
I'm a newbie to live bait fishing, great tips! Thanks for posting! Tight lines.
You bet! Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it.
I would give this at least 2 thumbs up!
Thanks!

Not a bad idea!

Sounds like that would work well!
ty for being short and having great info
You bet! 👍
I needed this! Thanks!
You bet! Glad I could help.
I’m glad I stayed for the bonus. I was hooking the tail sideways with little success. WhIch method do you use more often?
Nice! I would say I use the head-hook the most when jigging and the back-hook when slip bobber fishing.
Well done . Thank you .
You bet!! Glad you found it helpful.
Good Job!
Thanks!

Oh yeah, that’s a big bass killer.
Fantastic vid.....thank you

Awesome video! Hey, how many dozens of minnows can you fit in your cooler bro??
Depending on the size of the minnows, 3 to 5 dozen.
Solid vid....lets go fishing
Thanks!
Great video bud. I’ll absolutely be using these tips. I especially liked bonus tip number 1. I’ve been doing the back dorsal fin setup wrong , ummm, forever. 😬🤦🏻♂️
Thanks. It makes a big difference!
Thanks for the video.
$100 bucks is a tough swallow for the Engel.

Like the presentation
Thanks!
I'm trying to go for Walleye and pike
Good luck!
Please send me the info on the aerator, thank you
Here is the link: amzn.to/3JfZhqH
You can also use shrimp they are just like crayfish
Shrimp are great bait!
thank you!!
Glad to share!
I like tip #5, going through the back, never did that before for crappie. Will the minnow stay alive about the same as going through the lips?
Actually it will stay alive longer.
If only I seen this video a week ago. I pretty much just fed the fish and went through probably 2 dozen minnows
Well, not next time! 😆
@@calebwistad lol hopefully they’ll still be biting good when I’m able to get back out
I cut a wide rubber band into squares after nose hooking minnows I slide a square over hook point past barb, never loose a lively minnow !
That’s a great tip!
I always used tip #3
👍
Will it catch crappie with the tail hook?
Oh yeah. Absolutely.
Nice
Thanks!

… 😂
You taught a old dog a new trick or two thanks
That’s quite a compliment! Thanks man. Tight lines!
I absolutely kill it with nightcrawlers but cant seem to catch anything with minnows, it must be the way im working it in the water or something..
Could be! The best way to fish with minnows is to fish them under a slip float and let them swim around.
What about using frozen minnows?
Frozen minnows will work if you hook them good. They are definitely mushier than fresh. Definitely not the best choice but they do the job.
@@calebwistad I hear ya but several areas do not allow live minnows and by 2027 they will not be allowed in some Canadaian provinces due to hitchhiking evasive species larvae in the water.

I'm gonna try 3 next time I'm out. So sick of losing minnows
I feel you. Minnows aren’t cheap these days!
I lip hook and tail hook and back hook. I save my dead minnows and then hook them behind the head and jig them like a soft plastic
Nice! I’ve done that too
super informative , were all the minnows returned to the wild when finished ? 2 years and PETA has not found you ! that is an accomplishment right there ! UA-cam demonitize you yet ?
No real minnows were harmed in the making of this video…. Much. 😂
I have been hooking minnows in the back the way he says is wrong. When the fish ate feeding aggressively I have balled them up on the hook and gotten bites. When they are finicky, you need to paint black dots on the minnows forehead.
What is this black dot theory? ⚫️
@calebwistad I was being facetious. I fish for crappie, and when they are not biting, nothing works.
@@HughButler-lb6zs I gotcha! Lol. I missed your sarcasm there. Might try the black dots though…. 😂
You look like an old Leo Messi who got connected with fishing through his early fifties.
You are not the first person to notice the resemblance! I didn’t even know who he was until someone said I looked like him. But the “old” part? Why you gotta go there? 😂
Oh yes
You can buy minnows with a gig that that looks just like a real thing
You can use plastic minnows but they don’t work quite the same.
#3 not through the belly, go through the back
👍
[ 😮 My grandfather said to me if having been getting fish go in the water and fart and see what comes up 😮 ]
😆
Why not just use lake or river water?
It’s illegal to move any lake or river water away from the water body you got it from here in Wisconsin. You can’t even legally trailer a full live well if you filled it in the lake.
Good video but you should use a plastic mino instead of hooking and shaking them all around my man..
I debated that when I filmed it. I try to keep it real though and it just made more sense to use real minnows when talking about using real minnows. I don’t think it’s any different than putting them on a hook and letting a fish eat them……

There is audio. Might want to check your mute button!

Can’t say I have. Does it kill the minnow?
Yes it kills them. I usually ran them in the current with a small split shot. They literally will not come off without being ripped off. Google minnow rig, it may come up.
Imagine taking a long needle and threading you minnow from inside the mouth and out the anus and putting a hook on the end. Same principle.
I get using live bait, but these ways kill them so fast, with the exception of going through the tail. So it is better to simply buy dead bait

Calm video for fisherman literally a holocost for those minnows.
