This Started as a HOBBY | Shop Tour

- My woodworking journey started in a used 10x20 portable building and has grown from there. I built this shop 2 years ago while our house was being built. The main area is 24'x30' with a 12' lean-to . I spent every afternoon after work for a few months building the shop to what you see now. Since building this shop, I've changed the layout quite a few times and also added onto it by closing in 20' of the lean-to since then. In doing so I learned what I liked and didn't like with each version. With that said, I recently decided to change it to what think will be the perfect layout to optimize my work flow when working on projects. This seemed like the perfect time to finally do a shop tour. So stick around and see the layout with the new addition and let me know what you think in the comments down below.

New sub here. You have invested well and have quite the shop to show for it. I'll be checking out your other videos and looking forward to seeing what else you come up with.
Thanks!
The pull up thing is cool. I need to find something like that. tHanks for the video
Great video, and nice shop and equipment. You have put a lot of thought into your shop layout and it shows. Congratulations on a well planned shop.
Thanks I really appreciate it!

Great video! Keep it up Dustin.

Love the vaccuum cart man. The super tall arm to keep the hose off the floor is genius!
Thanks, it's the little things that make sanding not so terrible!
Best application of french cleat wall by far!
Appreciate it!
Nice. Clean and organized looks good

Wow ! You certainly have a nice shop, Hope your recouping your investment. Ray H. UK
Thank you for the tour. Subscribed. I know what you mean about tying up. My workshop isn't messy but it is very cluttered.
Thanks for watching
Nice shop, loved the video.
Primary reason your CNC dust collection works better is because of the inlet and outlet configuration. You said the 6" helps "a little" in your video; it helps ALOT. From a conductance standpoint 6" will have well more than double the conductance (think of it as flow) of a 4" pipe, all else the same. Also the downstream configuration on your CNC dust collector is essentially optimized whereas your shop collector's downstream configuration is horrid for conductance (it looks really nice, so I understand why you did it). You want large diameters, minimal length, and minimal bends on both sides of the blower. You're choking the flow to the filter badly which causes causes a large pressure drop, thus decreasing flow rate at the tool-end.
Hope this helps!
Thanks! I've considered upgrading to 6" inlet and outlet piping just haven't wanted to spend the money or the time to do so haha. I definitely will eventually just need to find some spare time.
HAHA ... 1 year ago i said to myself "hey, i can do such a table by myself" and bought a miter saw and a router ... 1 year later i have a full blown woodworking shop ... things escalate quickly
Oh I know the feeling
i would like to see how you built the french cleat wall! nice job!
Very Kewl Place!
Thanks!
Kind of funny that I have almost all the exact same tools except a smaller CNC (Shop Sabre 30 by 40) but I have all my chit crammed into a 2 car garage. I'm jealous of the space you have but you don't get this kind of space on accident...you do something right in your life to deserve it so good for you my man. Good for you.
That's awesome! It all started for me in a 10x20 shed. Then while our house was being built, I built this shop myself. Thanks for the kind words!
Awesome shop man
Appreciate it. Thanks for watching!
Nice shop i alwais whanted to have a shop like that
Nice shop mate...I'm a professional cabinet maker with all the gear, flat bed cnc, altendorf panel saw, holzher edgebander, drumsander, bandsaw, and some old combination machine which is a planer, thicknesser and spindel moulder all in one and a small spray booth. And I'm still jealous of your set up lol
OMG at 3:00 u need to make your blast gate look like a railroad semaphore signal (lower quadrant type, look 'em up!) because that would be AWESOME! lol
I definitely had to look up what a semaphore signal was lol it does look like one though
..........and things like that LOL. Great looking shop. I love your Husky table your upgrades are a great idea! One suggestion, get a 5lb extinguisher if you ever need one you will thank me I promise. Thanks for sharing your time and talent
Haha I was wondering when someone would point this out. Thanks for watching!
Damn nice. Subbed 👍
Thanks! Appreciate the sub!
Very nice shop
Especially like the miter saw station
Just subbed
New to UA-cam woodworking content creation
Goodluck with your business
Thanks I appreciate it!
Cool shop!!! We just don't get that kinda space in the UK unless you're a millionaire. Good stuff
Thanks for watching!
Nice shop an you seam very humble and down to earth, I'm in, I'm glad I didn't pass this one up
I appreciate that! Thanks for watching!
Ótima oficina, só falta trabalhar
Thanks!
Awesome shop set up. Love all the space you have. Thanks for the tour. Sub'd Tony
Thanks! I wish I had more space haha
Awesome shop! I love the workbench top with your logo. Do you have a video on it?
Thanks and not yet! I may do something on it in the future as it has been a popular subject from the video.
still watching the ad lol. Subscribed.
😕 those are new... Thanks for joining in!
Quick comment here. I have also modified my 2hp harbor freight DC with the Rikon impeller, bigger 6” inlet, and a pleated filter. The reason you’re not getting the suction you want is very likely due to your huge run of 4” pipe down to your filter. Even if it’s 5” ducting, you still have 90 degree angles, and a long travel down to your filter, which is choking the air movement. If you simply lift the filter up to be right next to the DC housing, and do a straight short run with a 5”-6” duct, your cfm will drastically increase.
Thanks for the advice! I have considered changing it to a straight run to the filter, but I like having it close to the ground for convenience when it needs to be cleaned. I still may do it eventually.
Good shop tour! But great workout video!! 😉
😂😂
Just subscribed, looking forward to seeing your work, hope you crank out some more videos.
Awesome thank you!
Very nice layout! We just shot our first shop tour video of our 4k sqft one man shop!
Any video on adding your addition? Thanks for the walk.
I wish I had videoed it, but I got in a hurry to get it complete before the CNC showed up and did think about it. By the time I did it was already too far along to try and video. Thanks for watching!
Nice shop and good video!
Like what you did with your shop vac and cyclone cart. Any chance you have a video on how you made it or how it’s working for you? Thanks!
Thanks i appreciate it and no I don't have a video on making it, but I can tell you that it works well. Only the fine dust makes it to the vacuum.
Great video and shop! Planning my new shop build this spring. Curious on the shop size as well as how you like the avid cnc? Thanks!
The main area is 24x30 and the cnc room is 12x20. As for the Acid cnc, I love it!
I bought 1 driller for a hobby. Now I have everything.
Once you start, it's hard to stop.
Awesome space and equipment. Lots of headroom. How do you like your lighting? Did you need to modify any of it?
Thanks! I haven't haf a need to change the lighting, it has been working good for me!
Such a grandfather thing to do, take a lesser tool in a trade for his grandson. Sounds like an awesome grandpa! What did you do prior to wood working full time? Btw, incredible shop, I’m definitely jealous!
He is! Woodworking still isn't my full time job but it's definitely not just a hobby anymore. Thanks!
@@DustinOliver-OCD didn't answer the question.
tracks for the track saw on the garage door -- that's awesome. I've really wanted to utilize the garage door as storage space. Are those shop made holders? How did you make them? Will they hold the tracks if you open/close the garage door?
Yes they are shop made and do hold the track when door is opened/closed. I just sketched up the design and used the CNC to cut the parts.
Awesome shop! Do you find the muffler on the shop vac makes much of a difference.?
Thank! It's not major but it definitely makes a difference
I would suggest a much larger fire extinguisher with electrical devices and so much wood around. I mean you never know, there's a lot of blades that could cut a wire and cause a short.
Yea that's not a bad idea.
Great shop, looks really nice! Question on the router lift. I recently got that same saw and want to put my router lift in the extension table just like you did…. Did you have to put some additional backing underneath before cutting out for the lift?
Thanks and no I didn't have to add any bracing. The top is an MDF like material but seemed a lot more dense, which made it more difficult then I expected with the palm router. I guess thats why its strong enough to not need bracing. Hope this helps good luck!
Can you show how you made the track saw track storage? Would definitely like to do that in my shop
I just sketched up the design and used the cnc to cut the parts. It could easily be done with a jig saw
nice tour, thats a really good setup you have. My question is this... the husky adjustable height table, how sturdy is it when all wheels are locked?
Thanks! It's really sturdy, especially with the cabinet underneath. It adds weight which is needed when doing any hand tool work.
OCD. You said you had OCD. I get it. Oliver Custom Design 😁
Beautiful shop and great setup. What is the box with the filters next to the Jet jointer?
It's a air cleaner cart
That fridge is awesome. Did it come that way?
Yes I got it for Christmas one year I think
Which Home Depot was that...I could use a free sander! 😂
Great shop layout!
Thanks! A buddy of mine tried a few days after I got mine but didn't have any luck haha.
DUSTIN, YOU HAVE A GREAT LOOKING SHOP THERE MY FRIEND.THATS A LOOKING WORK BENCH YOU HAVE THERE.I WANTED TO STOP IN SAY HODDY AND GIVE YOU A SUB.THANK YOU BUDDY FROM DOUG AKA #4.03
Thanks 👍
I've been planning to get the Husky height adjustable work bench and modify it like yours for some time now. Anything you'd do differently?
The only thing I would do differently would be to center the top. Since I put a bigger one on I set it back a bit to still have access to the lift crank. Now it just leans to the back a little, not really a big deal though.
Dustin, so many questions!
OCD is a good thing for woodworkers.
What are the dimensions of your main shop without the part you closed in? I'm trying to stuff everything into a 2 car garage and cant seem to accept the limitations I have on space but I want the Laguna bandsaw you have! Can you talk about the Husky adjustable table? Been looking at one. I like the addons you made. Does it take the weight of the laminated top and the drawers? How stable is it? I thought about using two of them for a miter saw station wings but then I saw the dog holes you made and wondered if it resist racking etc etc
I like your shop. Would love to send some questions to you on if you're on Instagram. Thanks for the tour! Liked and subscribed
The main shop is 24x30 as for the husky table it handles the weight of the top and drawers well. The additional weight makes it really stable, its never moved on me with the wheels locked. The top will tilt some but not to bad, no different than it did with the smaller top it came with. I love having the ability to adjust the height, it makes a great infeed or outfeed for every tool too.
Please provide some info on your workbench. I can’t find it on Home Depot’s website. Awesome shop tour.
It's a Husky 52in adjustable height work bench table.
What size is the replacement top?
Jealous of your space and setup. Love my little garage but the project potential in here is insane. One thing I would add is some kind of sound dampening. Not only nice for video but would take the edge off of tool sounds. I always wear ear protection but still stuff sounds raw bouncing off all the concrete.
Great point! I've considered making some just haven't set aside time to do so. Thanks for watching
Do you have any plans or videos for your your work bench? I have been trying to convince myself to buy the adjustable height table and I really like how you modified yours.
+1
Thanks and not yet! I may do something on it in the future as it has been a popular subject from the video.
Nice shop! Clean and functional and looks like a great place to work!
Thanks!
Inspiring shop. How well does the foam on the garage door work? I live just north of Houston TX and my shop door faces East, and isn’t insulated yet. I am debating whether or not to use foam or get a garage door insulation kit.
Thanks! Yes insulate it! I can relate, I'm East of Baton Rouge LA. It made a noticeable difference. I actually just got 4x8 sheets of 3/4" foam insulation from lowes and cut it on the table saw. It had a higher R value than any kits I could find.
Awesome stuff man.. if you dont mind me asking what was or is your day job that allowed u to buy all these awesome tools?
Thanks! I work in industry for my day job and do this in the afternoon and weekends.
How do you like that Husky workbench? Is it stable enough to work with for larger projects?
It's been able to handle pretty much everything I needed to do on it.
Free?? Wow. If it's not showing up in our system, it means it's not for sale. That's the response I would have got.
That's what I thought too but it never hurts to ask.
Nice shop! Was gonna ask you questions about your dust collection system but I think I’m more interested in how your losing too much weight now! My wife says I’m getting too fat!! 😂
I like your husky work bench. What size did you get?
awesome shop! But I have to say, if you finished dialing the combo in within a 0,001 in only two hours?! That's not long!! It took me the better part of a day and I gave up after 5 thou...
It may have taken me longer than 2 hours, it's been awhile since I did it. I do remember not wanting to touch it ever again after that though!
